Michael Schumacher ‘fighting’ as F1 legend is cared for by wife, kids and nurses following horror ski accident

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER’S former F1 boss Jean Todt says he has been to visit the stricken F1 star.
The seven-time world champion hit his head in a skiing accident in the French Alps in December 2013.

    3

Former Ferrari team principal Jean Todt has revealed he visited Schumacher last week

And his condition remains a secret among those closest to the Schumacher family at their home in Lake Geneva.
But Todt, who oversaw five of Schumacher’s seven titles as boss of Ferrari, is one of only a handful of visitors to see the 51-year-old.
He said: “I saw Michael last week. He is fighting.
“My God, we know he had a terrible and unfortunate skiing accident which has caused him a lot of problems.

“But he has an amazing wife next to him, he has his kids, his nurses, and we can only wish him the best and to wish the family the best, too.
“All I can do is to be close to them until I am able to do something, and then I will do it.”
    IN SAFE HANDS
As Ferrari celebrate their 1,000th race, Schuamcher’s son, Mick, will drive his dad’s F1 car on Sunday around the Mugello circuit.
Schumacher won 72 of his record 91 victories for Ferrari but Todt knows that record will be eclipsed by Lewis Hamilton, who currently stands on 89 wins.

The Brit is also likely to equal Schumacher’s seven world titles this season and Todt admits he never expected anyone to beat that benchmark.
He added: “Lewis will beat all of Michael’s records simply because he is a very talented driver.
“He is motivated and driving for the best team. He has the best car, the best engine so all the ingredients are there.
“It is positive logic that when you do so well in life you get the benefit of it, and that is what is happening with Lewis and Mercedes.

Sebastian Vettel joins Aston Martin for F1 2021 season after disastrous campaign at Ferrari so far

SEBASTIAN VETTEL has signed a multi-year deal to drive for Aston Martin F1.
The four-time world champion has agreed terms with the Silverstone-based team, formerly known as Force India and now called Racing Point.

The team is now owned by billionaire, Lawrence Stroll and will be renamed as Aston Martin from next season.
Vettel, 33, will partner Stroll’s son, Lance Stroll, in the team after being shown the door by Ferrari.
The German has made no secret of his desire to remain in the sport while Aston Martin are hoping his experience will help them challenge for wins.
Vettel said: “I am pleased to finally share this exciting news about my future. I’m extremely proud to say that I will become an Aston Martin driver in 2021.

“It’s a new adventure for me with a truly legendary car company. I have been impressed with the results the team has achieved this year and I believe the future looks even brighter.
“The energy and commitment of Lawrence to the sport is inspiring and I believe we can build something very special together.

“I still have so much love for Formula One and my only motivation is to race at the front of the grid.
“To do so with Aston Martin will be a huge privilege.”

Vettel, who won all his titles with Milton Keynes-based Red Bull Racing, is a huge lover of English culture, plus a big James Bond fan.
His switch to the team had been expected after being seen leaving the British GP in the same car as Racing Point’s team principal, Otmar Szafnauer.

Szafnauer added: “Everybody at Silverstone is hugely excited by this news. Sebastian is a proven champion and brings a winning mentality that matches our own ambitions for the future as Aston Martin F1 Team.
“On a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, Sebastian is one of the best in the world, and I can’t think of a better driver to help take us into this new era. He will play a significant role in taking this team to the next level.”

Sergio Perez QUITS Racing Point… paving way for Ferrari star Sebastian Vettel to join Silverstone-based team

SERGIO PEREZ will quit Racing Point – paving way for Sebastian Vettel to join the Silverstone-based team.
The Mexican will leave when his contract ends in December and Vettel is expected to be confirmed today for the team that will be renamed as Aston Martin for 2021.

Vettel has been a long-term target for the team owner, billionaire Lawrence Stroll, who wants the four-time world champion to partner his son, Lance in the team.
Perez, 30, had expected to stay on, with a deal until 2022, and said he was “hurt” to be leaving the team.
Perez, who missed two races this season after testing positive for Covid-19, posted a message on Twitter.
He said: “Everything in life always has a beginning and an end, and after seven years together, my time with the team will come to an end after this season.

“It hurts a bit as I bet on the team during very rough times; we managed to overcome obstacles and I am very proud of saving the jobs of several of my teammates.
“I’ll keep the memories of the great moments lived together, the friendships and the satisfaction of always giving my all.

I don’t have a plan B. My intention is to continue racing here, but that would depend on finding a project that motivates me.
    Sergio Perez

“I will always be grateful for the opportunity given to me by Vijay Mallya, who believed in me in 2014 and allowed me to continue my F1 career with Force India.
“To the current administration, led by Lawrence Stroll, I wish nothing but the best in the future, specially with the upcoming Aston Martin project.

“I don’t have a plan B. My intention is to continue racing here, but that would depend on finding a project that motivates me to continue giving my 100 percent in each lap.
“I want to thank each one of you who have been with me throughout these 10 years. To my family, who has always been there to support me despite anything.”
Vettel, 33, has been told he is no longer required by Ferrari, who have signed McLaren’s Carlos Sainz as his replacement.

He has since been heavily linked with a switch to Racing Point and was seen leaving Silverstone after the British GP in the same car as Racing Point team principal, Otmar Szafnauer.

Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes team say he was NOT to blame for Italian GP error

LEWIS HAMILTON’s Mercedes team have told him he was NOT to blame for the error that cost him victory in the Italian GP.
Merc bosses say it was their fault after failing to spot a message on page 3 on their information screens, telling them the pitlane was closed.

    2

Hamilton made the illegal pitstop during the race that earned him a ten second time penalty that resulted in him finishing seventh.
While the world champion took responsibility for the mistake immediately after the race, his team have now shielded him from blame.
Mercedes chief strategist, James Vowles, said: “There were two pieces of information to tell us that the pitlane entry had been closed.

Lewis came on the radio asking for a different set of tyres, we were reviewing whether or not we had time, whether it was the correct decision or not
    James Vowles Mercedes Chief Strategist

“The first was there were boards around the track that have a cross on it, a red cross indicating that’s the state, and when the driver sees that, he knows he must stay out.

“The second piece of information is we have TV screens in front of us.
“One of those is called page three and it contains a number of messages that the FIA wants to send us.
“This was a key point in the race where the entire field would have come into the pitlane.
“Lewis came on the radio asking for a different set of tyres, we were reviewing whether or not we had time, whether it was the correct decision or not.

“These were all conversations that take just a few seconds, but they all add up.

“What you are not doing particularly is looking for a single line on the screen to indicate the pitlane entry was closed and we missed it.
Meanwhile, Ferrari have ruled out a swoop for Mercedes engine whizz, Andy Cowell.
The Brit is leaving the world champions having played a huge part in their success in the hybrid-turbo era.
And while Ferrari have substantial engine problems, boss Mattia Binotto has ruled out signing up the 51-year-old.

Michael Schumacher’s son Mick, 21, ‘to make Formula 1 debut’ this weekend ahead of Tuscan GP

MICK SCHUMACHER is in line to make his Formula One debut at the Tuscan Grand Prix, according to reports.
As the son of Ferrari legend Michael, big things are expected of Mick, 21, while he fights for the Formula 2 title.

    2

The German is the son of seven-time world champ MichaelCredit: Getty – Contributor
According to German outlet RTL, the youngster is being lined up for a free practice runout at Mugello.
This weekend’s Grand Prix represents Ferrari’s 1000th race in F1 and the appearance of a Schumacher would no doubt attract huge added interest.
That is particularly the case with the unusual pandemic-affected calendar taking F1 to the Prancing Horse’s very own track.
It is not yet known which car Schumacher would climb into for an FP1 workout, but Ferrari-affiliated teams Haas and Alfa Romeo are the obvious bets.

A spot in a Ferrari itself would be a huge statement from the Italian team, particularly amid their own struggles.
In fact, team principal Mattia Binotto has already talked up Mick’s abilities from inside the Ferrari Driver Academy.

Last month, Binotto told Bild am Sonntag: “He’s doing very well this season in Formula 2. His job was to improve and make progress and he is doing that.
“We’ll soon discuss what we’re going to do with him next year.”

Schumacher won his first F2 race of 2020 with victory in the feature race at Monza on Saturday.
A string of podium finishes has the German racer in second place of the junior division’s championship, six points behind Brit and fellow Ferrari Academy ace Callum Ilott.
Many in F1 hope Mick can live up to the legacy of father Michael, 51, who holds the record for the most Drivers’ Championship titles in the sport.
The seven-time champ was skiing with his son, one of two children with wife Corinna, when he suffered a serious head injury in December 2013.

Pierre Gasly reveals stars including Mbappe, Neymar and Giroud sent him congratulation texts after F1 Italian GP win

PIERRE GASLY has revealed he was called up by a host of football stars to congratulate him on winning last week’s Italian GP.
The Frenchman was the shock winner in Monza to earn his first ever victory in F1 and received plenty of well-known well-wishers, including French President, Emmanuel Macron.

    3

Pierre Gasly recorded his first ever F1 win in Italy

    3

And the Frenchman revealed he had many famous well wishers after the win
Paris Saint-Germain fan Gasly said: “I was impressed and very happy how much support messages I got from all other athletes in the world of sports.
“Guys like Neymar, Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe, Fabio, Giroud, so many players actually follow F1 and congratulated me.
“Also in different sports, in tennis, some cyclists, from everywhere. I was shocked and I still haven’t had the chance to go through all the messages.
“It means a lot because this makes me realise sometimes we are focusing and not realising so many people are following back in their life, and really happy for the success of other guys.”

Lewis Hamilton was also full of praise for the 24-year-old, who has endured a torrid 12 months after being demoted from Red Bull, losing his best mate in a racing accident AND getting burgled.
Gasly and Hamilton have struck up a friendship playing Call of Duty together on their Playstations.
He added: “It’s pretty funny to play together and team up together as it’s very different to normal, we’ve got to help each other if we want to get the win.
“Obviously in coronavirus times, during the lockdown, we did spend some more time on the Playstation.

Neymar, Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud all congratulated Gasly after the win

“It was actually nice because we started to discuss F1 and got to know each other a bit more.
“I got a lot from that time and I feel like when I need some advice I am free to reach him and he’s always really open and willing to help me back. He’s a very nice guy.
“For me Lewis is a very special guy, someone I really looked at when I was a kid and in my eyes is probably the best driver we ever had in F1.
“So when I heard the words he said it’s obviously very touching and unbelievable, because for me it feels strange because these guys I looked at since I’m 10 years old and was always a great example to follow and now I’m racing with him and he’s talking this way about me.

“When you get such strong words from a six-time world champion, who will become a seven-time world champion in a couple of months, it’s pretty special.”
Meanwhile, Williams F1 team have confirmed that Simon Roberts will take the role of acting Team Principal after the Williams family stepped down from their roles.
Roberts joined the team earlier this year as managing director and will now be in charge for the Tuscan GP this weekend in Mugello.
