Sebastian Vettel in shocking Italian GP start after being beaten by little-known Israeli driver who PAID to race

SEBASTIAN VETTEL’S final Italian GP for Ferrari got off to a shocking start.
As he climbed from his cockpit after the morning practice, he was second-last on the time-sheets and had been beaten by 25-year-old Isreli driver, Roy Nissany, who had paid for the privilege to drive the Williams.

This weekend will be Vettel’s last driving for the team at Monza – and it is poignant for this was the scene where his career with F1’s most famous team started to unravel 12 months ago.
Rewind to 2019 and Vettel, who had qualified in fourth, finished the race down in 13th and out of the points.
It will be remembered for his careless spin at Turn Nine and then when he tried to rejoin the track, he drove straight into Lance Stroll.
It was a down-right rookie error – hardly the behaviour of a four-time world champion. He was hit with a 10-second time penalty and never recovered in the race.

To make matters worse, his Ferrari team-mate, Charles Leclerc, won the GP and was the toast of the Tifosi – the team’s passionate fans.
It made Leclerc the de facto No.1 and Vettel was usurped and a few months later he was being shown the door.

    2

Roy Nissany, who had paid for the privilege to drive the Williams, finished ahead of VettelCredit: Getty
Despite being assured he was being retained, in the Spring Vettel received a telephone call from Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto telling him the team would not be renewing the German’s contract.
Vettel was frustrated, disappointed and equally stunned. But perhaps he’s even dodged a bullet, for the team’s performance on track has been shocking.

Despite benefitting from hundreds of millions of pounds in prize money and historic payments, Ferrari have gone backwards.
The Belgian GP last week where they finished 13th and 14th was their worst result in a decade.
The cause? Many factors according to Binotto, but there is a glaringly obvious one hidden in a secret FIA investigation into their engine.
In a nutshell, rival teams suspected foul play. There was an investigation by the governing body. The rules were changed.

The ten greatest F1 drivers of all-time – according to SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt
Crucially, the results of that investigation were kept private thanks to a controversial ‘settlement’ between the two parties.
The upshot is, Ferrari are now a mid-table team at best.
They are set to be leapfrogged by Renault in the constructors’ championship and that would put them in sixth place.
The pressure is mounting on Binotto to turn it around, but he has already warned that it could take “years” for the team to be regular winners again.
Just as well then, those passionate Tifosi will not be here in Monza this week, owing to limited numbers due to the coronavirus pandemic.
What is next for Vettel? He is 33-years-old and a wealth of experience but he has limited options.
A place at Racing Point, which will be rebranded as Aston Martin Racing next year, is the only viable option.
But listening to him speak here in Monza there was a distinct air of resignation as he spoke about F1’s future.

He said: “You could ask where Formula One is and what place Formula One is filling?
“The sport has some big challenges ahead, obviously the whole situation with the pandemic around the world doesn’t help, but nevertheless I think there’s some big questions to be answered.
“With the way the world is going I think there are big things that we need to tackle, we need to address, and Formula One is maybe not at the forefront of this.
“Looking after the world, the environment, Formula One has to do more and be a bit more and tolerant, otherwise I think it could get difficult in the future.”
Rather like his own, the sport faces an uncertain time ahead.

Lewis Hamilton reveals he dreamed of driving a Williams in tribute to Sir Frank and daughter Claire ahead of F1 exit

THE CHEQUERED flag will fall on one of the greatest family-run businesses in sport this Sunday in Monza.
And sad goodbyes  said to “the most respected and honest” man in Formula One.

The Italian Grand Prix marks the final time  the Williams family will oversee their F1 team since its  formation in 1977.
Both Sir Frank Williams — who has been in motorsport for an incredible 54 years — and daughter Claire, who has run the team since 2013, are stepping aside after selling up to US investment firm Dorilton Capital.
The pair leave behind an incredible legacy, one not lost on Britain’s six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
The Mercedes superstar declared: “I’m a big fan of Sir Frank and his incredible contribution to the sport.

“He was always so positive to me as one of the people I respected most, and was one of the most, if not the most, honest people in Formula One. So, definitely, it is sad to see the end of a chapter.
“But the legacy will continue as the team will keep the Williams name.

The ten greatest F1 drivers of all-time – according to SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt
“I was hopeful at some stage they were going to return to the front of the grid.
“I remember dreaming of driving the car Nigel Mansell had but it never turned into an option  and that’s when I moved to Mercedes.”

Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas started his F1 career with Williams.
He said: “I’m really sad. Without Williams,  especially Frank, I wouldn’t be here.”
Williams was THE name in F1 in the 1980s and 90s, with their drivers  winning seven world championships and the team nine constructors’ titles.
Sir Frank, 78, started Frank Williams Racing Cars in 1969, running a custom Brabham chassis.
But the team’s F1 roots started in 1977 with the formation of Williams Grand Prix Engineering with Sir Patrick Head, operating out of an old warehouse in Oxfordshire that had previously been used for making carpets.

The team won their first race in 1979 and fittingly it was the British GP won by Clay Regazzoni, while Alan Jones took the drivers’ title the following year.
Despite being left as a  tetraplegic as a result of a car crash in 1985,  Williams continued to run the team, amassing a total of 114 wins, 128 pole positions, nine constructors’ titles and seven  drivers’ championships.
Jacques Villeneuve’s crown in 1997 was their last, while Pastor Maldonado’s shock-win in the 2012 Spanish GP was their last GP victory — a subsequent fire in the garage put pay to Sir Frank’s speech to the team.
Stars such as Ayrton Senna, Damon Hill, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost and Nelson Piquet have all driven for the famous team.
And in a technical capacity, legendary designers, Head, Adrian Newey and Paddy Lowe have also held posts at Williams.
But there have also been considerable lows and one that overshadowed the team’s on-track success.

Frank never spoke to anyone about it. But you can see the pain in his eyes every time he thinks about the accident.
Claire Williams on Frank’s feelings after Ayrton Senna’s death

That was the death of Senna at Imola in 1994, which saw Williams charged with manslaughter in Italy.
Sir Frank was later acquitted but the pain of losing the Brazilian at the  relatively young age of 34  had a huge and lasting impact.
In an interview last year to mark the 25th anniversary of Senna’s death, Claire Williams revealed: “Frank never spoke to anyone about it.
“That isn’t his personality. He isn’t one for therapy or having long conversations. He  keeps it all in.
“That is how he has been brought up but you can see the pain in his  eyes every time he thinks about the accident.”

Lewis Hamilton shows off new £80k EQS fully electric Mercedes which goes 0-60mph in 4.5 secs and has holographic lights

LEWIS HAMILTON has shown off his latest electric motor – the Mercedes EQS.
As the Formula 1 championship heads to the petrolhead heaven of Monza, Hamilton talked up his decision to go green in a bid to protect the environment.

    2

Lewis Hamilton posed next to his Mercedes EQS, which is due for release next year

    2

The F1 champ says he is ‘working closely’ with Mercedes to move towards a more electric fleet
The EQS is not due for release until next year but is part of the two-car garage the Merc racer is sticking to off the track.
Pairing the £80,000 saloon with a Smart car, Hamilton, 35, says he has offset the carbon footprint of his ENTIRE F1 career.
Yet the EQS still packs a punch, going from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds with 470bhp generated by a 350 kW electric motor.
Mercedes reckon a fully-charged EQS can even manage a range of 435 miles.

Naturally, it is also packed full of toys including holographic headlights, a rear ‘lightbelt’ of over 200 LEDs, and ambient dashboard lighting.
Posting a picture of himself beside the car, Hamilton wrote on Instagram: “Recently I’ve been making many changes in my life to reduce my impact on the environment.
“The first step in this journey was to understand my personal impact on the planet so I could make changes to improve it.
“Since then, I have offset my carbon footprint from my Formula 1 career dating back to 2007, I have reduced travel where possible, I have gone plant-based and outside of the track, I try to use electric cars wherever possible.

“I also want to use my position as a racing driver to enforce positive and permanent change, which is why I’m working closely with Mercedes to slowly move their fleet of cars towards electric.

“This is my new dream car, the new EQS fully electric Mercedes. I can’t wait until it’s released! It’s difficult to always be perfect when we go about our daily lives, but I’m continuing to learn how to be better and I’m committed to staying educated and informed so I can play my part.
“Small steps lead to big change, so it’s important we all take a moment to understand our footprint and the small changes we can make in our everyday lives to put our planet first.
“The last step for me will be when I step away from this sport and can focus fully on helping heal the world to provide a better future for our kids and our kids’ kids.”

Sir Frank Williams and daughter Claire step down from F1 team following £136m sale in end to 43-year family dynasty

SIR FRANK WILLIAMS and his daughter, Claire, have stepped down from running their F1 team following its sale for £136million last month.
It brings an end to F1’s family dynasty after 43 years with highlights including 114 wins, 128 pole positions, nine constructors’ titles and seven drivers’ championships.

    1

Sir Frank Williams and his daughter Claire have stepped down from the Williams F1 team
SunSport reported last week how Claire Williams was coy on her future following the sale and this weekend’s Italian GP at Monza will mark her last as Deputy Team Principal.
Sir Frank, who formed the team in May 1977, has also agreed to make way for new owners, US-based investment firm, Dorilton Capital.
Claire Williams said: “With the future of the team now secured, this feels like the appropriate time for us to step away from the sport.
“As a family, we have always prioritised Williams.

“We have demonstrated that by our recent actions with the strategic review process and we believe now is the right time to hand over the reins and give the new owners the opportunity to take the team into the future.
“We have been in this sport for more than four decades. We are incredibly proud of our track record and the legacy we leave behind.
“We have always been in it for the love of it, for the pure pleasure of going motor racing, so this is not a decision that we have taken lightly but after much reflection and as a family.
“We are greatly appreciative of Dorilton’s encouragement to continue, but in them we know the team will be in good hands and the Williams name will live on.

Fred offered Man Utd exit by Roma as Italians eye double swoop with Smalling

“This may be the end of an era for Williams as a family-run team, but it is the beginning of a new era for Williams Racing and we wish them much success in the future.”
Little is known about Dorilton Capital and when the sale was confirmed on the Stock Exchange the real buyer was listed as BCE.
Last week, Williams confirmed that the new buyer was NOT Bernie Ecclestone but would not divulge further details.
And Williams driver, George Russell, who is in the middle of a three-year loan deal from Mercedes, said it was not essential the new boss of the team has F1 experience.
The Brit added: “It is a sad day for us. For me personally, Frank and Claire gave me my opportunity in F1 and that is something I am thankful and grateful for.
“It is sad to see the Williams family step aside but the team will remain as Williams Racing and we will continue to fight and represent the family name.
“I know they have the best interest of the team at heart and I am at ease with the situation.

“As for the next boss, I don’t think F1 experience matters too much. Look at Toto Wolff at Mercedes.
“He had some motorsport experience but not a huge amount in F1 and has not done too bad. So I don’t think that is hugely important.”
Meanwhile, Matthew Savage, Chairman of Dorilton Capital and Williams Grand Prix Engineering, said: “We fully respect the very tough decision of Claire and the Williams family to step away from the team and the business after securing new resources for its future.
“We are proud to carry the Williams name into the next exciting phase for the sport and we thank Sir Frank, Claire and the Williams family for the opportunity to be part of this great British brand.”
Williams have confirmed that the new board will include James Matthews, who is Prince William’s brother-in-law.
Matthews, a business tycoon and a former racing driver, married Pippa Middleton in 2017.
He is also heir to a 10,000 acre Scottish estate, Glen Affric, and his brother, Spencer, was in the TV show Made in Chelsea.
Matthews is is the CEO of Eden Rock Group, an investment firm based in London and joins Savage, who is the Chairman of Dorilton Capital and the company’s co-founder Darren Fultz, on the new board.

Ferrari fears it will be years until they start winning on F1 circuit again as chief Mattia Binotto calls for ‘patience’

FERRARI boss Mattia Binotto has pleaded for “patience” as he tries to stop the team’s slide – but warned it could take YEARS for them to be winners again.
The Italian team endured their worst weekend in a decade in last Sunday’s Belgian GP where their cars finished in 13th and 14th place.

And they are set for more pain this weekend in their home race – the Italian GP at Monza.
SunSport quizzed Binotto after the race in Spa as to what exactly had gone wrong, whether he was the right man to resolve the situation and how long it would take to turn it around.
He said: “How long it will take? I think that if you look back at all the winning cycles it is always many years.
“There are no silver bullets in F1. Patience and stability is required.

“The engine is frozen this season, so there is nothing we can do on that. We are developing it for next season, and it is progressing well on the dyno at the moment.
“On the car there are some restrictions, so what’s the plan for us? The main plan is focusing on the next seasons – not only 2021 but also certainly as well 2022.
“In order to do well in the next season we also need to try to understand the weaknesses of today and make sure that we are addressing them.”
There is a growing feeling within the F1 paddock that Ferrari’s loss of engine power came about following an investigation by the FIA into their power unit.

Controversially, the findings of that investigation have been kept private after the two reached a “settlement”.
But Binotto claims that all engine-manufacturers have suffered as a result of the rule changes introduced for this season.
But while the likes of Mercedes still continue to eek out more lap time for their motor, Ferrari – who were blasted by Seb Vettel during the British GP – have not been able to do so.
He added: “What is happening, in fact, is that we have a car that has lost power. Just as all the engine manufacturers have lost it: but we more than the others.
“Last year the engine partly covered the limits of the machine, but this year it is no longer the case.
“The limits of the machine are emerging. On that point it is clear that we must improve.”
