There was no German Grand Prix initially on this year’s calendar, following Hockenheim’s omission for 2020 – but this race has been included in the new-look schedule after the Covid-19 pandemic caused havoc.
When is Eifel Grand Prix practice?
The race weekend begins in Germany on Friday, October 9.
It’s set to be an exciting weekend of racing, with two practice sessions scheduled for Friday.
The first will begin 10am BST.
And the second will start at 2pm here in the UK.
Following on from that, qualifying is on Saturday and the race itself at 1.10pm BST on Sunday.
Which TV channel and live stream can I watch it on?
You can watch every moment of this weekend’s action live on Sky Sports F1.
Coverage of Practice 1 begins at 10am.
If you’re not a Sky subscriber, grab a NOW TV pass from £9.99 to stream all the action on your mobile, tablet or PC.

Highlights from qualifying will be shown on Channel 4 at 5.30pm on Saturday, with the best bits from the race itself on Sunday at 6.30pm on the same channel.

Mercedes confirm member of Formula One team has tested positive for coronavirus ahead of Eifel Grand Prix

MERCEDES say a member of its Formula One team has tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of this weekend’s Eifel Grand Prix.
But the Brackley-base team are trying not to let it disrupt Lewis Hamilton’s bid to equal Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 victories.

    2

Mercedes have confirmed a case of coronavirus within the team ahead of this weekend’s race

SunSport understands that the team member is not well known to the public – and that would rule out key personnel such as Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, and team boss Toto Wolff.
A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a team member has tested positive.
“This has been handled and is being handled in line with FIA protocols, working closely with the FIA.
“We ask for your understanding that we won’t be offering additional details.”

F1’s rules include strict testing protocols during the pandemic with staff being tested every five days.
Anyone who does test positive is immediately placed into self isolation with those who have come into contact with them also isolated until tested.

Last week, F1 announced the highest number of positive tests in a week since the season resumed, with 10 personnel contracting the virus in the wake of the Russian Grand Prix.

However, F1 chiefs reckon that number will drop for the Eifel GP at the Nurburgring, given the tougher restrictions concerning social distancing and wearing masks.

Sir Jackie Stewart claims ‘it’s hard to justify’ calling Lewis Hamilton F1’s greatest ever and blasts Mercedes dominance

FORMULA 1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart believes it is ‘difficult to justify’ saying Lewis Hamilton is the greatest ever driver.
The Brit is well on track to equal Michael Schumacher’s seven world championship titles this year.

He will also equal, and then highly-likely overtake, the German’s record of 91 race wins.
But Stewart, who won the driver’s championship three times, believes it is near-impossible to compare Hamilton’s achievements to speedsters of yesteryear.
The 81-year-old says that the modern-day racing calendar being busier, as well as Hamilton having a ‘so superior’ car and engine to other competitors makes comparison tricky.
Speaking on the In The Fast Lane podcast, Stewart said: “I don’t think that you can account [for] that sort of level of success.

“Just because today there are 20, 22 races, whereas in the old days when for example Juan Manuel Fangio, raced maybe sometimes six, eight or nine races a year in Formula 1.
‘To say that Lewis is the greatest driver of all time, would be difficult for me to justify, in the sheer power of what the other drivers were doing.
“Lewis drives extremely well, make no mistake, I’m not in any way diminishing his skills, but it isn’t the same.
“Lewis made a very good decision when he left McLaren at that time and went to Mercedes-Benz. And I take my hat off to him for making that decision.

“But frankly, the car and the engine are now so superior that it’s almost unfair on the rest of the field.”

Due to difficulties comparing the modern-day car and calendar with that of the past, Stewart doesn’t even have Hamilton in his top three racing drivers of all time.
He added: “Juan Manuel Fangio in my mind is the greatest driver that’s ever lived.
“With Jim Clark as the second-greatest, even ahead of [Ayrton] Senna.”
Fangio won five world titles in the 1950s. Scottish racer Clark won two world titles in 1963 and 1965.

At the time of his death, at the age of 32, Clark had won more F1 races and achieved more podiums than any other driver.
Senna won three world titles in 1988, 1990 and 1991 before tragically losing his life when crashing at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt disagrees with Sir Jackie however, putting Hamilton at No1.
Senna bags second spot with Schumacher, winner of seven world titles, in third.
Clark is fourth with Fangio in fifth.

Honda QUITS Formula 1 to focus on carbon neutrality leaving Red Bull and AlphaTauri without engines in 2022

HONDA are quitting Formula One in a serious blow to the sport.
The Japanese car giant dropped the bombshell in a press conference from their Tokyo HQ yesterday (FRI) that will have F1 chiefs reeling.

    1

Honda, who returned to F1 in 2015 first with McLaren, will leave at the end of the 2021 season meaning Red Bull and sister team, AlphaTauri, will need to source an engine to go racing from 2022 onwards.
However, it is Honda’s reasons for turning their backs on F1 which is the biggest concern.
As F1 does not fit in with their environmental and sustainability targets and they will focus their investment on electric vehicles.
A statement from Honda said: “As the automobile industry undergoes a once-in-one-hundred-years period of great transformation, Honda has decided to strive for the realization of carbon neutrality by 2050.

“This goal will be pursued as part of Honda’s environmental initiatives which is one of the top priorities of Honda as a mobility manufacturer.
“Toward this end, Honda needs to funnel its corporate resources in research and development into the areas of future power unit and energy technologies, including fuel cell vehicle and battery technologies, which will be the core of carbon-free technologies.
“Toward this end, Honda made the decision to conclude its participation in F1.”
Honda say they are committed to seeing out their deal with Red Bull and AlphaTauri and will continue to financially support the current F1 engine development.

Honda has decided to strive for the realization of carbon neutrality by 2050. Toward this end, Honda made the decision to conclude its participation in F1

And sources at Red Bull say there is no panic within their Milton Keynes HQ as they now switch their attention to finding another engine supplier.
F1’s rules mean that one of the current engine markers – Mercedes, Ferrari or Renault must supply them with engines, but they will come at a cost.
Team Principal Christian Horner, admitted it now offers his team a new challenge but Red Bull are well suited to change as the only team in the modern era to win races with two manufacturers.
He said: “As a team we understand how difficult it has been for Honda Motor Company to reach the decision to step back from Formula One at the end of the 2021 season.
“The shifting focus within the automotive industry has led to Honda’s decision to re-deploy their resources and we understand and respect the reasoning behind this.

    MY VIEW

    By Ben Hunt

F1 bosses should be worried. Losing a big name company in Honda is a real concern as the sport is suffering an identity crisis.
In fairness, F1 have been smart to bring in cost-caps £119million as part of the new rules but now there is a wider issue.
Given the economic downturn, F1 will be hoping more companies don’t follow Honda’s lead.
The way I see it, is that F1 now has a decision to make when it comes to engines.
Is it a mix of sport and entertainment? Or does it still hanker after the idea of being a combination of sport and road-relevant technology – as it used to be?
For me, it is a simple one. Go for the sport/entertainment mix. Drive down costs by bringing back cheaper, simpler engines.
Ditch the complicated hybrids. Make them loud and exciting.
F1 has missed the boat when it comes to road-relevance battery power. Formula E has that sewn up.
The sad thing is, the engine regulations are now in place until 2026, meaning incoming F1 chairman Stefano Domenicali has a job on his hands in encouraging other brands to stay in F1 until then.

LEWIS HAMILTON has missed out on Michael Schumacher’s win record after finishing 3rd in the Russian Grand Prix.
The Brit started on pole and fended off Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen, but was handed two five-second penalties for performing practice starts outside the designated zone before the race.

And that allowed Bottas to take the chequered flag, before making a strong statement on the team radio.
He said: “To my critics, to whom it may concern. F*** you!”

Valtteri Bottas wins Russian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton blows chance to match Michael Schumacher record

LEWIS HAMILTON blasted a “ridiculous” and “bulls**t” time penalty that cost him a chance to match Michael Schumacher’s win record in Russia.
The Brit was hit with a 10-second penalty for practising his grid starts in the wrong place on his way to the track in Sochi.

Hamilton started on pole looking for a record equalling 91st victory in F1 but was made to settle for third.
His team-mate Valtteri Bottas took full advantage to win his second race of the season from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Hamilton told Sky Sports: “I need to go back and see what the rules are or what exactly I did wrong.
“I am pretty sure that no-one has got two five-second penalties for something so ridiculous before.

“I’ve done this at a million tracks over the years and never been questioned on it but it is what it is.

“Of course it is (excessive). It’s to be expected, they’re trying to stop me. But it’s ok. I need to keep my head down and stay focussed and see what happens.”
Six-time world champion Hamilton was heard over team radio saying “this is ridiculous, man” and asking “where is that in the rules?” after the penalty that ruined his day.
He pitted on lap 17 to change tyres and serve his 10-second penalty, which meant he returned to the track down in 11th place.

Hamilton complained that Mercedes pitted him too early and told his race engineer: “I don’t want any more info, Bono. It doesn’t make any difference.”
The 35-year-old fought his way back to third but saw his lead in the drivers’ standings cut.

Bottas started from third but leapfrogged Verstappen from the start and led a drama free race to win in Russia.
Sergio Perez finished fourth for Racing Point with Daniel Ricciardo fifth in his Renault and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in sixth.
The safety car was out on the first lap after Lance Stroll smashed his Racing Point and Carlos Sainz crunched his McLaren into the barrier.
But the rest of the race in Russia was far less eventful after back to back thrillers in Italy at the start of the month which both saw red flags.

Lewis Hamilton risks one-race BAN after picking up another penalty at F1 Russian Grand Prix in Sochi

LEWIS HAMILTON’s record-equalling title challenge could be put on hold as he risks a one-race ban.
The six-time world champion is likely to match Michael Schumacher’s haul of seven titles by the end of this season.

However, the Brit has been left walking a disciplinary tightrope after picking up another two penalty points on his racing licence.
Hamilton saw himself handed a two five-second penalties in Russia after performing practice starts out of banned.
Luckily for him, the FIA ruled the two penalties to form one incident, meaning he received two points, rather than the four which would have seen him banned.
However, if he picks up any more penalty points he will receive a one-race ban.

After the incident in Italy, Hamilton sought out race stewards for an explanation of the call to hand him a penalty.
However, he was later satisfied with their decision and accepted responsibility for the error that resulted in him finishing in seventh place.
FIA Race Director, Michael Masi, says Hamilton was well within his rights to ask for a clarification.
He said: “As far as I understand, when Lewis saw the video, he agreed that the penalty was fair.

“There are no such restrictions [stopping a driver from seeing the stewards but fortunately, it’s not often that races have to be stopped with a red flag.
“But the stewards always adhere to an open door policy — if someone has questions, they can always ask them.”
Meanwhile, Hamilton’s boss at Mercedes, Toto Wolff says he will be staying with the team next year – although his role has yet to be decided.
Wolff, who also owns 30 percent of the team, is weighing up his plans as his contract with the team expires at the end of year.
He said: “I love this team and I think this is my place, it is just [that] eight years as a team principal is taking its toll and it is something I am reflecting on.
“It is important to make the right decision for my family or myself but you you can sure I will be involved in this team in one way or another.”
