Sky Sports forced to apologise as Toto Wolff describes Mercedes’ Sakhir GP collapse as ‘colossal f*** up’ on live TV

SKY SPORTS were forced to apologise after Mercedes chief Toto Wolff described Sunday’s Grand Prix as a ‘colossal f*** up.’
Mercedes endured a disaster in Bahrain after 22-year-old George Russell was denied his first ever win through no fault of his own.

Toto Wolff swore live on air to describe Mercedes’ performance

With a famous victory in his grasp, a pit stop howler on lap 63 saw one of Valtteri Bottas’ tyres end up on Russell’s car.
The Brit was forced to pit again on the next lap before making yet another charge to the front.
Just as it appeared he could rescue a win, an unfortunate puncture ended his chances to leave Russell devastated.
Russell, who finished ninth, was stepping in for Lewis Hamilton who continues to self-isolate after contracting coronavirus.

Speaking after the race, Wolff said live on air: “Overall for us, it was just a colossal f*** up.
“I know im not allowed to say that… but it was.”
Sky Sports presenters Simon Lazenby and Anthony Davidson quickly interrupted his comment and responded: “I have to apologise for that!”
Wolff then continued, explaining how the team made such a grand error.

He added: “Simply put, one of the tyre crews didn’t get a call.
“We had a radio failure in the garage and when the car came in they didn’t know to change the tyres and had the wrong tyres.
“This is accidentally why we had the wrong set of tyres out.
“Then we obviously had to pit again. But then the race wasn’t lost, but then one bad thing comes…
“We did need to double stack because it was a Safety Car stop. We were find on the hards and could have stayed out, but we had the gap and this is when you do these things.
“You can question that but I think it is absolutely the right call. Still, I cannot even watch these pictures.
“Overall we were doing a good job. Technical failures happen. It wasn’t any human error. These things happen and we have to learn from it.”
While it was heartbreak for Russell, it was tears of joy for Mexican Sergio Perez who earned his first career win.
Esteban Ocon was second while Lance Stroll took third.

Speaking after the race, Russell said: “I am gutted, I am absolutely gutted.
“I can’t put it into words, it was not a nice feeling jumping out of the car.
“I gave it everything I had, I felt confident, comfortable, then we had the muddle up in the pit stop, but I could still have caught Sergio, then there was the puncture. I am gutted.”

Watch Michael Schumacher and Jos Verstappen talk about kids’ future in F1 18 YEARS ago as Mick and Max prepare for 2021

AMAZING footage has emerged of Michael Schumacher and Jos Verstappen talking about their sons competing in Formula 1… from 18 years ago.
Schumacher was on the way to winning his fifth of seven Championships at the time, while Verstappen had most recently been racing for Arrow.

Michael and Jos discussed their kids’ F1 prospects back in 2002

And during one interview, the duo were asked about the prospect of their sons, then aged three and five respectively, competing in F1 against each other in future.
When the subject was raised, Schumacher, with a grin, began: “We have never had any sort of argument in our friendship.
“I think this could be the first we’re going to have some argument if our two would be racing each other.”
And Verstappen echoed: “Very similar, very similar age so for sure they will compete to each other if they grow up and decide to go into go-karts.”

Schumacher then interjected, with a laugh: “But I think horse riding or golf is a much better sport for our kids!”
Verstappen, now 48, then continued: “For me if he really wants to… I mean, Formula 1 is very far away. And you never know what happens after 15 years.
“But I really will help them, whatever he wants to play. If he wants to play football, I do everything I can to get the best team or whatever, and it’s the same in go-kart or tennis.”
As it turned out Max wanted to pursue F1, and as it happens, is very good at it.

Now 23, the Dutchman is set to compete for Red Bull once again next year – but this time, up against Mick Schumacher.
Michael’s son, now 21, has proven himself in F2 this season – today scooping the Championship in a dramatic season finale.
And he will make the step up next year, having signed for Haas.
Upon the news, joyful Mick said: “The prospect of being on the Formula 1 grid next year makes me incredibly happy and I’m simply speechless.

I also want to acknowledge and extend my love to my parents – I know that I owe them everything
    Mick Schumacher

“I would like to thank Haas F1 Team, Scuderia Ferrari and the Ferrari Driver Academy for placing their trust in me.
“I also want to acknowledge and extend my love to my parents – I know that I owe them everything.
“I have always believed that I would realise my dream of Formula 1.
“A huge thank you must also go to all the great motorsport fans out there who have supported me throughout my career.
“I will give it my all, as I always do, and I look forward to going on this journey together with Haas F1 and them.”

Romain Grosjean to miss Abu Dhabi GP after horror fireball crash in Bahrain with his F1 career seemingly over

ROMAIN GROSJEAN will miss the final race of the season and his last as an F1 driver.
The Frenchman cheated death in a fiery smash in Bahrain last Sunday and sustained burns to his hands.

The 34-year-old, who is leaving the Haas team at the end of the year, had initially wanted to bring the curtain down on his F1 career by racing in the Abu Dhabi GP.
However, he has decided to fly home to Switzerland to be with his wife and three children and to receive further treatment to his burned hands.
He said: “It is with great sadness that I will not be able to do my final race in Abu Dhabi and be with the team there.
“We’ve tried as much as we could with the doctor to recover and to repair my hand, but the risk of racing is too big for my recovery and my health.

“So, the decision was made that I’m not going to race. It’s one of the hardest decisions of my life, but it’s obviously one of the wisest. I will miss the team, but I will be supporting them as ever.”
Grosjean lost control and drove directly into crash barriers at 140mph after clipping Daniil Kvyat’s car.
His car split in two and was then instantly engulfed by flames as marshals rushed to help the French driver out of the wreckage.
He was trapped in his car for more than 20 seconds after the smash as his visor started melting but incredibly walked away with only burns on his hands and ankles.

The French driver admitted accepting he was going to die after the crash.
But he was saved thanks to the halo cockpit canopy on his F1 car.
The driver was released from hospital on Wednesday and returned to the site of the crash on Thursday, when he was reunited with those who helped him escape.
And Grosjean, with both hands in bandages, stepped up his recovery as he hit the gym on Friday by lifting weights.
But although his F1 career appears to be over, Grosjean suggested he would like to continue racing – and winning races – with the likes of IndyCar and rally possible options.
F1’s strict Covid protocols means that once he leaves Bahrain he will be unable to attend the race in Abu Dhabi.
It means Pietro Fittipaldi will continue to fill in for him alongside team-mate Kevin Magnussen.
Grosjean is now hoping he can secure the loan of an F1 car once his hands have healed to have a final blast around Abu Dhabi in a private track session.
Mercedes have already offered him the use of Lewis Hamilton title-winning car from 2019.

Haas boss Gunther Steiner added: “Romain believed in our Formula One project at the very start, he committed to drive for us before we’d even built a car.
“There is no doubting the determination and sheer effort he has put into helping us to achieve what we have as a young team in Formula One.
“We will forever be grateful for that belief and commitment. It is those qualities, his drive and ambition, that I’m sure will aid him on his recovery.
“On behalf of Gene Haas and myself, together with the whole Haas F1 Team operation, we wish Romain well and a return to full health.”
