F1 forced to AXE Turkish Grand Prix over coronavirus restrictions with second Austria race added to packed schedule

NEXT month’s Turkish Grand Prix has been AXED due to coronavirus restrictions – with a second race in Austria replacing it in a minor schedule reshuffle. The race in Turkey was only added to the calendar as a replacement for the Canadian Grand Prix last month.

The race in Montreal was cancelled due to travel restrictions.
And now, after Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium lost the Champions League final to Portugal, the Turkish GP has been replaced by a second race in Austria.
The race at the Istanbul Park Circuit was due to take place between June 11 and June 13.
The two races in Austria will go ahead between June 25-27 and July 2-4.
As part of the reshuffle, the French Grand Prix will now move one week FORWARD to the weekend of June 18-20.
An F1 statement read: “Following discussions with the promoter in Turkey and relevant stakeholders, it will not be possible to have the race between 11th-13th June.
“The promoter has requested that we look at the potential opportunity for the race to be rescheduled later in the season if possible, alongside China who made the same request earlier this year.
“We can confirm that there will now be two races in Austria, back to back.

The ten greatest F1 drivers of all-time – according to SunSportโ€™s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt

“The first race, the Styrian Grand Prix, will take place on 25th-27th June.
“The Austrian Grand Prix will take place on its original date on 2nd-4th July.
“As a result of this change the French Grand Prix will move one week earlier to 18th-20th June, with all tickets for the event valid for the earlier date.
“This means that there continues to be 23 planned races for the 2021 season.”
F1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali added: โ€œWe were all looking forward to racing in Turkey but the travel restrictions in place have meant we are not able to be there in June.
“Formula 1 has shown again that it is able to react quickly to developments and find solutions and we are delighted that we will have a double header in Austria meaning our season remains at 23 races.
โ€œI want to thank the promoter and authorities in Turkey for all of their efforts in recent weeks.
“And I want to thank the promoters in France and Austria for their speed, flexibility and enthusiasm in accommodating this solution.
“We have had very good conversations will all the other promoters since the start of the year and continue to work closely with them during this period.โ€

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff to hold showdown talks with Valtteri Bottas for ignoring orders and holding up Lewis Hamilton

TOTO WOLFF will hold discussions with Valtteri Bottas over his comments after the Spanish GP.During Sunday’s race, Bottas was instructed not to hold Lewis Hamilton up as the Brit hunted down Max Verstappen, who was leading the race at the time.
Toto Wolff will speak to Valtteri Bottas for not letting Lewis Hamilton pass himCredit: Splash
However, Bottas continued to take the racing line, forcing Hamilton to risk an overtaking manoeuvre, which he executed with aplomb.
However, when asked afterwards why he made life difficult for Hamilton, whoย went on to win the race, Bottas admitted he “could have let him by earlier” and added “I’m not here to let people by”.
Those remarks will now be addressed by Wolff ahead of the Monaco GP where he will remind his drivers about their responsibility to the team.
Wolff said: “Racing drivers, their instincts are what they are.
“We would have wished that maybe because Lewis was on a totally different strategy, he would have come through faster, but in the end, we scored the result.
“I can relate to Valtteri that he had a tough day again and you’re annoyed.
“If it would have lost us the race I would be more critical, but in the end, this is something we can learn off.
“It goes both directions, and this is what we will be discussing but in a very camaraderie sort of way.”

Meanwhile, Hamilton, who was unaware that Bottas was told to let him through, says he is happy for a gloves-off fight with his team-mate for track position.
He added: “I think we’re the best team-mates. I didn’t know that he had a message so in my mind I was like ‘we’re racing’ and that’s totally fine for me, particularly early on in this part of the season.
“In my mind, I was ‘so I’ve got to get close and hope for an overtake’ but then when we went into turn ten – we were on massively different strategies so I was going to get him at some stage because I had much better tyres.
“Sometimes we’re in that position where you just have got to put the team first.”

Lewis Hamilton, 36, can race into his 40s and could put off retirement, claims Mercedes chief Toto Wolff

LEWIS HAMILTON can race well into his 40s according to his Mercedes boss Toto Wolff.Hamilton, who told SunSport on Sunday that he was open to signing a new deal with the team before F1’s summer break, will turn 37 in January.

Wolff hopes Hamilton will sign a new long-term Mercedes dealCredit: PA
However, following his win in Barcelona, he declared there was “more life in the old dog, yet”.
And Wolff says the Brit, who is enjoying his best ever-start to an F1 season, despite the threat of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, should be looking at signing a new long-term deal.
He said: “Yes, it should be [more than a year]. We don’t want to be in a stressful situation every single year where we are absolutely flat-out trying to win races and needing to negotiate.
“I would rather that doesn’t happen every year. We just need to spend a day or two together, put it out there, and decide which are the difficult components.
“We will then lock the door and won’t walk out until it is sorted. That works best for us and it has worked best for us in the past. ”
Hamilton has a 14-point lead in the championship as he goes in search of an eighth world title that would move him clear of the joint-record he currently holds with Michael Schumacher.
And Wolff has drawn a comparison with Tom Brady, the NFL star who won his seventh Super Bowl at the age of 43 earlier this year.
Asked if Hamilton can compete into his 40s, Wolff said: “Yes, absolutely. I have no doubt about that. He is so disciplined that in a way it is inspiring.
CASINO SIGN UP OFFER: CLAIM UP TO ยฃ800 IN CASINO BONUS CASH

“As long as Lewis continues to look after himself mentally and physically, continues to develop cognitively, then he can go on for much longer.
“Look at Tom Brady and we are talking about an athlete that is on the field. Here is a racing driver that has utilised all his senses.”
Meanwhile, Hamilton is now just two race wins away from achieving 100 victories in F1.
And after spending 59 laps behind Verstappen in theย Spanish GP he says he picked up some secret tips on the Dutchman’s driving style and his Red Bull car.
He said: “I learned a lot about Max, perhaps more than all the other races put together.
“When you are with people on track you get to see different things and watch closely. I was following relatively closely and I learned a lot about his car and how he uses it, so it was a good race in that respect.”

LEWIS HAMILTON wants to start negotiations with Mercedes about a new contract. The world champion only signed a ten-month deal in February, just weeks ahead of the new season.

The short nature of the deal raised fears that Hamilton could quit Formula One at the end of the year.
However, the 36-year-old, who is expected to earn around ยฃ40million this year, says he is feeling fighting fit and ready to open talks with Mercedes chief Toto Wolff.
When quizzed by SunSport about his thoughts towards the 2022 season, Hamilton gave a huge hint that he intends to stay in F1, irrespective of whether he wins an eighth world title.
Hamilton – who won the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday having clinched his 100th pole a day earlier – said: “There is still some life in this old dog.
“I would say that I am more conscious about my body and I have been training myself for a long time.
“I am constantly learning about getting the best out of myself and I am feeling great.
“Contract-wise, we never want to be in the position we were in January and February.
“It ruined my whole winter and I am sure it was not helpful for Toto in terms of being off and time to relax, so it did not feel like we had much of a break.

“So I think we have to be sensible.
“We don’t have to rush anything but we have to be sensible and start these conversations.
“They are very complex and it is never a simple procedure and so hopefully soon we can start, so long as it does not interfere with the actual job.
“We still have 19 races to do but it would be great to get something in place before the break so we can be in that time and have a clear picture of the future.”
Hamilton joined Mercedes in 2013 and has now won 77 times with the Silver Arrows and a further 21 times at McLaren.

    RACE RESULTS
    Here’s the Spanish GP result.
Lewis Hamilton’s late charge has given him his third victory of the season.
He needs just two more to reach 100 wins.
Max Verstappen was second and Valtteri Bottas finished in third.

KING OF SPAIN – LEWIS HAMILTON WINS THE SPANISH GP
A perfectly executed strategy to win this race as Verstappen had lead from the first corner of the first lap right up until lap 60.
But with seven laps to go, Hamilton passed the Red Bull man for glory. The Dutchman gets a bonus point for setting the fastest lap.
Bottas in third place ahead of Leclerc. Perez in fifth. Ricciardo in sixth.
LAP 63 VERSTAPPEN SETS FASTEST LAP
He is on for a bonus point, which is scant consolation given he was leading until the last seven laps.
    LAP 61
Verstappen pits for tyres as he gets new tyres and has a shot at setting the fastest lap and earning the bonus point.
    LAP 60
Hamilton gets Verstappen. He passes him in to Turn One and in to the lead.
Good job that all round from Mercedes.
    LAP 57
Bottas gets past Leclerc and in to third place. It is Verstappen, Hamilton, Bottas, Leclerc, Perez, Ricciardo, Sainz, Ocon, Norris, Alonso.
    HAMILTON GETS PAST BOTTAS
Back to Hamilton verses Verstappen. The Red Bull man leads for the time being but his tyres are shot.
    LAP 52
Bottas told not to hold Hamilton up. But the Finn ignored the order. Hamilton had to pull off an overtake to get past his team mate.
    RUSSELL HUNTING FOR POINTS

    LAP 49
Verstappen is 16 seconds ahead of Hamilton. Still 16 laps to go.
    LAP 48
Verstappen says: “I don’t see how we are going to make it to the end.”
    HAMILTON GETTING CLOSER TO VERSTAPPEN

    HAMILTON STOPS FOR TYRES
The Brit darted in to the pits at the last minute on lap 44 to stop for tyres.
He will lose time but of course now had fresh tyres. Verstappen now has to get to the end on these tyres.
This is shaping up for a great final.
    VERSTAPPEN VERSUS HAMILTON
This is turning into an epic fight. Maybe not the most exciting on track battle but intriguing nonetheless. Final laps will be exciting.
    QUESTIONS OVER MERCEDES STRATEGY
After Red Bull’s slow stop of 4 seconds, Mercedes could have called in Hamilton for tyres on the following lap.
Had they done that, he would be in the lead. At the moment, however, he is behind Verstappen but is quicker and on fresher tyres.
    LAP 28
Hamilton called in for tyres. It is a solid stop that takes 2.7 seconds.
That has put Verstappen back in front.
    HAMILTON HELD UP BY MAZEPIN
Toto Wolff complaining to Race Control that the Russian was holding his driver up.
Hamilton now prolonging his stint on his first set of tyres. It means he will have fresher tyres late in the race.
    HAMILTON TURNS UP THE WICK
He has put pressure on Verstappen, who stops for tyres. Red Bull, usually so reliable with their pitstops, make a slow one. Almost four seconds.
That has given Hamilton a huge advantage. He has stayed out on track and is now blasting out the laps on his remaining tyres.
    LAP 21
The top two are pulling away from the rest of the field. This is a great battle between them.
Fourth race of the season and the fourth time they have slugged it out. Great stuff.
Ignore the top two and the fight for third – Leclerc versus Bottas – is also close.
Ricciardo, Perez, Ocon, Sainz, Norris, Stroll is the top 10.
    LAP 17
Verstappen v Hamilton. Just 1.2 seconds in it. But this is a two-horse race. These two are relentless. Thumping out the laps, despite having a heavy fuel load.

    LAP 11 RACE RESTART
Safety Car is in and the racing resumes. Verstappen keeps the lead. Leclerc stays in front of Bottas.
Stroll passes Alonso to move in to 10th place.
    UNLUCKY FOR TSUNODA

TSUNODA HAS STOPPED ON TRACK – SAFETY CAR DEPLOYED
He is getting out of his AlphaTauri after it conked out. The Safety Car has been deployed while a crane will be used to recover his stricken motor.
This will reel in Verstappen’s advantage. And give Bottas a good chance of getting past Leclerc.
    LAP 6
Verstappen still holds that 1.4 second gap, which keeps him out of the DRS zone. Hamilton on P2.
Leclerc is in P3 and holding off Bottas in fourth. The Finn is like a sinking ship.
    LAP 1
Verstappen has pulled a 1.2 second gap on Hamilton. He is absolutely motoring.

But Hamilton took advantage of two pit stops and much better tyres to close down Verstappen’s 22-second lead.
And Hamilton eventually overtook his chief title rival with six laps left to secure a third win in the season’s opening four races.
The victory sees Hamilton extend his lead over the Red Bull star to 14 points – with the Dutchman claiming the fastest lap bonus.
Hailing his team’s strategy, Hamilton told his team over the radio: “Great job with that strategy. Definitely had to work for it”.
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff told him: “Lewis perfect combination. Great strategy, bold and great driving.”
Valterri Bottas finished third with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in fourth.
Sergio Perez was fifth ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in sixth, Carlos Sainz in seventh and Lando Norris eighth.
Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly picked up the final points.

Hamilton said after the race: “First I want to acknowledge the fans that are here. It is great to see. I saw a British flag out there which I haven’t seen for a long, long time. I feel great after this. I feel like I could go again.
“I was so close [behind Verstappen] for so long but just managed to keep the tyres in somehow. 22 seconds was a long way to come back but it was a good gamble – a really great strategy from the team.
“I was about to get a shot to get past him as I pitted. I was really conflicted – ‘do I come in or ignore the call’. I did what the team asked because there is a great trust between us. Remarkable job by everyone in this team. What a day.”
