The Alpine driver said: “It was necessary to stop.
“I had been racing in Formula 1 for 18 seasons in a row without stopping, and staying fully dedicated had become too difficult.
“Besides, I had other challenges to do – I needed to do them.
“I was even feeling like I was wasting my time in Formula 1, but now I have come back happier. Now I am free to have fun every weekend.”
Ahead of this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Alonso claimed that that he is enjoying his comeback more than he expected.
He added: “In terms of happiness or how I feel coming back, it’s better than I expected, honestly.

“I’m enjoying every weekend so much, enjoying driving so much.
“Even the weekends where we don’t have racing, I miss the grand prix.
“So now that we have three races, France and two [in] Austria, I will enjoy because I like the back-to-back.”

Valtteri Bottas ‘open minded’ about F1 future and reveals Mercedes contract talks haven’t yet started

Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton are into their fifth year as teammates at Mercedes
Bottas says he is “open minded” about his future but enjoying life at Mercedes
Hamilton has hinted at staying with the German team for at least another year but Bottas is less willing to commit.
The Finn was asked if discussions over a contract had taken place but he looked to downplay the issue.
Bottas said: “We haven’t yet talked about anything, because this is a pretty demanding championship and we know how much it matters to be able to work in peace.
“When you can focus on the main thing, that is performance, but that time will come, for sure. It (contract talks) hasn’t come yet, but for sure time flies, especially as we’re soon going to go to triple headers.
“So I would imagine that, naturally, over the next month or so you need to start to speak and I know from previous experiences that the sooner you can sort things out, the better for everyone. It will come soon, but not yet.
“About my future, what are my thoughts? I’m quite open minded.
“Like in life in general, you need to always take opportunities and you just never know what is around the corner. And that’s also, having clear goals, what you’re pushing for and that has taken me this far.
“I always want to kind of follow my heart and follow my passion and I am still enjoying Formula One very much and racing at the front.
“I really, really love it and I still enjoy it as much as I did in example first year with Mercedes, no doubt.”

F1 star Max Verstappen tells Lewis Hamilton he ‘can’t be bothered’ to play mind games ahead of Azerbaijan Grand Prix

MAX VERSTAPPEN says he cannot be bothered to play “mind games” with title rival Lewis Hamilton.Until now Hamilton and Verstappen have delivered barbs at each other with the Dutchman last proclaiming that he likes to “do his talking on the track” after his win in Monaco.

Hamilton meanwhile has accused Verstappen of “feeling that he has a lot of prove” as the championship battle hots up.
The duo have raced wheel to wheel this season without making contact and while that could change this weekend on Baku’s twisty street circuit, Verstappen says he will not get into a war of words.
He said: “I can’t be bothered by it, to be honest, mind games.
“Lewis said he doesn’t want to play those things either, so we just have to focus on what we have to do on the track anyway, which I think we do, and that’s also the best.
“I mean, whatever is said in here sometimes, at the end of the day, it can be a bit emotional sometimes.
“After a race or before a race, it also sometimes depends on how you get the question asked, so it’s all right.
“I think Lewis and I; we really respect each other and I think that’s very important.”
Verstappen now leads the drivers’ championship ahead of this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Hamilton, who made his debut with McLaren at 22, a year younger than Osaka, says he too initially found it tough going.
He said: “When you’re young you’re thrown into the limelight and the spotlight, it weighs heavily on you and probably most of us are not prepared.
“I remember when I got into F1 the team had PR [public relations] and I was never prepared for being in front of a camera.

“I’ve learned the hard way and made many mistakes and I still do today. It can be daunting, still, standing behind a camera.
“It’s not the easiest. Particularly if you’re an introvert and you do struggle to be under those sorts of pressures.

“There are scenarios where, for example Naomi’s scenario, she didn’t feel comfortable for her own personal health not to do something and the backlash is ridiculous.
“People are not taking into account that she’s a human being and she’s saying that [she’s] not well enough to do this right now.
“I think that needs to be really looked into and how people react to that and rather be supportive and uplifting to her.”
Hamilton, who is preparing for this weekend’s Azerbaijan GP, does not think that fining Osaka was the right move from tennis chiefs.

He added: “I applaud her for her bravery because it’s now asking those in power, putting them in question and making them have to think about how they react.
“The way they reacted was not good, with the fine. Someone talking about their personal mental health and then being fined for it, that wasn’t cool.
“They could have definitely handled it better. I hope they take a deep dive into it and find a better way to navigate in future.
“As athletes we are pushing ourselves to the limit, we are on the edge, and we’re only human beings.”

Monaco GP under threat as F1 chiefs chase track changes after contract expired following Verstappen win

MONACO’S unique position on the Formula One calendar is reportedly under consideration after a tame 2021 Grand Prix.Max Verstappen cruised home to an unspectacular victory, aided by Charles Leclerc’s pre-race retirement and the surprise lack of a safety car.

The historic circuit’s tight, narrow ride through the streets of Monte Carlo has and will remain an iconic scene for all of sport yet questions are being raised of its suitability to modern F1 cars.
According to the Mail, now is seen as the perfect time by the sport’s operator, Liberty Media, to discuss changes.
It is said that Monaco’s contract to host races, for which it pays £10million per year, expired last month.
Therefore Liberty are pressing the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) who host the race for changes in agreeing a new deal.
That includes alterations to the circuit layout, which are currently being tested on simulators.
Changes are not expected to be rubberstamped anytime soon but a more open-minded approach is thought to be necessary to keep the track relevant.

F1 hope to increase the £10m fee paid by the ACM as part of the sport’s bid to bolster its revenue flows.
The addition of new street races Saudi Arabia and, from 2022, Miami – both of which will pay far more for the privilege – also reduces the unique position Monaco holds on the calendar.
Other discussions will focus on the May date for the race and the local control over directing the global TV broadcast.
Ahead of the race, in which he struggled to seventh place, Lewis Hamilton led the calls for changes to be made at Monaco.

He said: “It is the best venue. It is the most beautiful place that we get to to race at.
“But you already know that it’s never exciting for the fans.
“It’s a one-stop race with these hard, long stints that we get to do. On the list of difficult places to overtake it is off the scale, highly unlikely you’re ever going to get an opportunity to do so.
“I don’t think fans enjoy that. I don’t know what the solution is, but I’m hoping when we are looking forward to future generations, it can be a more exciting race for people.”
