F1 star Max Verstappen tells Lewis Hamilton he ‘can’t be bothered’ to play mind games ahead of Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Hamilton meanwhile has accused Verstappen of “feeling that he has a lot of prove” as the championship battle hots up.
The duo have raced wheel to wheel this season without making contact and while that could change this weekend on Baku’s twisty street circuit, Verstappen says he will not get into a war of words.
He said: “I can’t be bothered by it, to be honest, mind games.
“Lewis said he doesn’t want to play those things either, so we just have to focus on what we have to do on the track anyway, which I think we do, and that’s also the best.
“I mean, whatever is said in here sometimes, at the end of the day, it can be a bit emotional sometimes.
“After a race or before a race, it also sometimes depends on how you get the question asked, so it’s all right.
“I think Lewis and I; we really respect each other and I think that’s very important.”
Verstappen now leads the drivers’ championship ahead of this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

But he has declared will not be going the extra mile with his preparations by walking the track in advance – and will spend the time in bed.
He added: “I can’t be a**** to walk. I’ll have a few more minutes in bed, and if I want to know the track I will drive my out-lap a bit slower, look around, you know.
“Everyone has a different approach. At one point I was, like, ‘I can’t be a**** to walk anymore to see it. I know the track is going left and right at one point’.

Lewis Hamilton blasts French Open chiefs for Naomi Osaka fine and admits he too struggled to deal with pressure

LEWIS HAMILTON admits he struggled to cope with the pressure of being thrusted into the spotlight when he made his F1 debut in 2007.The F1 world champion was quizzed about tennis star Naomi Osaka, who withdrew from the French Open after declining the tournament’s requirement to conduct a press conference.

Hamilton, who made his debut with McLaren at 22, a year younger than Osaka, says he too initially found it tough going.
He said: “When you’re young you’re thrown into the limelight and the spotlight, it weighs heavily on you and probably most of us are not prepared.
“I remember when I got into F1 the team had PR [public relations] and I was never prepared for being in front of a camera.
“I was never guided as to what to look out for and helped to navigate through that.

“So you just learn through the mistakes and it’s incredibly nerve-wracking especially when you have all good intentions but people take advantage of it.
“I’ve learned the hard way and made many mistakes and I still do today. It can be daunting, still, standing behind a camera.
“It’s not the easiest. Particularly if you’re an introvert and you do struggle to be under those sorts of pressures.
“Some people are less comfortable than others. I’ve learned over my time here, and I’m trying to continue to learn how [to] engage.

Mental health is not a joke, this is real and serious. This takes a lot of courage to do. Let’s all make sure Naomi knows she’s not alone. “There are scenarios where, for example Naomi’s scenario, she didn’t feel comfortable for her own personal health not to do something and the backlash is ridiculous.
“People are not taking into account that she’s a human being and she’s saying that [she’s] not well enough to do this right now.
“I think that needs to be really looked into and how people react to that and rather be supportive and uplifting to her.”
Hamilton, who is preparing for this weekend’s Azerbaijan GP, does not think that fining Osaka was the right move from tennis chiefs.

He added: “I applaud her for her bravery because it’s now asking those in power, putting them in question and making them have to think about how they react.
“The way they reacted was not good, with the fine. Someone talking about their personal mental health and then being fined for it, that wasn’t cool.
“They could have definitely handled it better. I hope they take a deep dive into it and find a better way to navigate in future.
“As athletes we are pushing ourselves to the limit, we are on the edge, and we’re only human beings.”

Monaco GP under threat as F1 chiefs chase track changes after contract expired following Verstappen win

MONACO’S unique position on the Formula One calendar is reportedly under consideration after a tame 2021 Grand Prix.Max Verstappen cruised home to an unspectacular victory, aided by Charles Leclerc’s pre-race retirement and the surprise lack of a safety car.

The historic circuit’s tight, narrow ride through the streets of Monte Carlo has and will remain an iconic scene for all of sport yet questions are being raised of its suitability to modern F1 cars.
According to the Mail, now is seen as the perfect time by the sport’s operator, Liberty Media, to discuss changes.
It is said that Monaco’s contract to host races, for which it pays £10million per year, expired last month.
Therefore Liberty are pressing the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) who host the race for changes in agreeing a new deal.
That includes alterations to the circuit layout, which are currently being tested on simulators.
Changes are not expected to be rubberstamped anytime soon but a more open-minded approach is thought to be necessary to keep the track relevant.

F1 hope to increase the £10m fee paid by the ACM as part of the sport’s bid to bolster its revenue flows.
The addition of new street races Saudi Arabia and, from 2022, Miami – both of which will pay far more for the privilege – also reduces the unique position Monaco holds on the calendar.
Other discussions will focus on the May date for the race and the local control over directing the global TV broadcast.
Ahead of the race, in which he struggled to seventh place, Lewis Hamilton led the calls for changes to be made at Monaco.

He said: “It is the best venue. It is the most beautiful place that we get to to race at.
“But you already know that it’s never exciting for the fans.
“It’s a one-stop race with these hard, long stints that we get to do. On the list of difficult places to overtake it is off the scale, highly unlikely you’re ever going to get an opportunity to do so.
“I don’t think fans enjoy that. I don’t know what the solution is, but I’m hoping when we are looking forward to future generations, it can be a more exciting race for people.”

But his former team principal Jean Todt has revealed he sees the seven-time champ “at least twice a month”.
Todt told Italian outlet Corriere della Serra: “I don’t leave him alone.
“Him, (wife) Corinna, the family — we’ve had so many experiences together.
“The beauty of what we have experienced is part of us and it goes on.”
Schumacher’s family have succeeded in their desire to keep his health situation private.
But last September neurosurgeon Erich Riederer suggested the 52-year-old was in a “vegetative state”.

“He is breathing, his heart is beating, he can probably sit up and take baby steps with help, but no more.
“I think that’s the maximum for him. Is there any chance of seeing him like he was before his accident? I really don’t think so.”

Red Bull ‘confident of luring 50 staff from F1 rivals Mercedes’ for new power-unit division in huge hiring spree

And respected journalist Michael Schmidt from Auto Motor und Sport says they want to take some of Mercedes staff.
Red Bull have taken over a Honda engine project and will move it in house and will start building their own engines.
Mercedes’ engine division in Brixworth employs around 500 people.
But Red Bull will need less staff as they are producing 1/3 of the capacity Merc currently do.
Schmidt said: “They have already ordered seven test stands.
“The poaching from Mercedes is more delicate. Six names have already been revealed, and six more are a done deal.
“But Christian Horner believes that around 50 Mercedes employees will switch sides by the end of the hiring process, and Andy Cowell should be among them.”
Red Bull boss Horner previously said that some Mercedes staff were interested in the move.

He told Autocar: “”I think people have seen how and what Red Bull has done in motorsport and the commitment it has.
“It’s based in the UK, it’s 30 miles from Brixworth, they don’t need to move house or move their children from school and it’s a chance to be involved in something from scratch.”
“We need a competitive engine, and this is the best route.
“Mercedes wouldn’t supply one and Renault didn’t want to supply one, so it didn’t leave us with a lot of choice. We’ve got to get on with it and make Toto rue that decision.
“Maybe one day he will need an engine from us!”

Speaking to DAZN, he said: “I want to be the best. In everything I do I want to be.
“I would love to act one day. But I am very conscientious. I like to learn step by step.
“I had opportunities and I know that I need time to prepare myself. Because I want to be the best. In everything I do I want to be. To do the best I can.
“If I’m going to make a movie, I’ll go to class, study, and make sure I express my emotions as I should.”
Hamilton, who currently trails Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in the 2021 world championship, also spoke about how he has recently taken up a more vested interest in reading.
“Right now I don’t have time [to act], so I suppose it will be something I do when I retire. I’m trying to read more,” he added.
“I like TV a lot, but it needs its time and I’m turning to reading. The last thing I’ve read is ‘Greenlights’ by Matthew McConaughey.

“I read ‘The Fourth Agreement’ about two years ago and I saw that it was ‘The fifth deal,’ so I started it.”
Hamilton has won three of the first five races of the F1 season with victories in Bahrain, Portugal and Spain.

Lewis Hamilton contract extension talks ‘stall’ amid claims of ‘cracks starting to appear’ with Mercedes bosses

MERCEDES bosses have calmed talk of Lewis Hamilton earning a new contract this summer, according to reports.Motorsport.com’s Italian edition has claimed there is increased tension among the German marque’s senior decision makers following the F1 Monaco Grand Prix.

Hamilton, 36, voiced his discontent having qualified seventh on the Principality grid.
And he failed to climb any places during the race – despite Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas retiring from in front of him.
The result allowed Max Verstappen to snatch first place in the drivers’ championship with Red Bull also jumping to top spot in the constructors’.
Before the race, Hamilton had been set to sign on the dotted line for another year with Mercedes by the summer.
It had taken the team and driver until the eve of the 2021 season to finally tie him down for the defence of his world title.
But this latest report suggests there is uncertainty within the Merc camp, although the final decision rests with team principal Toto Wolff.
The salary package is said to have already been agreed, leaving only Hamilton’s potential post-F1 role with the car manufacturer up for discussion.
Earlier this month, the driver had insisted that he wants to settle the matter before August’s summer break.
