Verstappen slams ‘dangerous and disrespectful’ Lewis Hamilton for 180mph Silverstone smash as Brit refuses to apologise

MAX VERSTAPPEN slammed Lewis Hamilton for ‘disrespectful’ British Grand Prix celebrations after blaming his rival for their first-lap crash. The Brit attempted to take the lead in a thrilling battle from lights out at Silverstone, which ended with Verstappen being clipped from behind and hurtling into the barrier at 180mph.

The Brit’s title rival had left the race for hospital checks
Medics sent the Dutchman, 23, to hospital as a precaution after he had gingerly exited the mangled car.
Formula One stewards handed out a ten-second time penalty to Hamilton, 36, despite his claims that he was alongside Verstappen and therefore allowed to attempt the risky overtake.
Red Bull boss Christian Horner angrily castigated the Mercedes driver, who recovered from the setback to win the race after a late overtake of Charles Leclerc.
And Verstappen was left seething after watching Hamilton’s celebrations in front of the 140,000 fans from hospital.
He tweeted after the race: “Glad I’m ok.
“Very disappointed with being taken out like this.
“The penalty given does not help us and doesn’t do justice to the dangerous move Lewis made on track.
“Watching the celebrations while still in hospital is disrespectful and unsportsmanlike behaviour but we move on.”
The Dutchman was released later on Sunday evening, writing on Instagram: “Cleared from the hospital after all the checks were ok. Thank you to everyone for all the nice messages and best wishes.”
Hamilton had asked his team radio if Verstappen was okay while nursing his slightly damaged Merc back to the pits, once the race had been temporarily red-flagged to clear the wreckage.
Horner, 47, had claimed the victory must feel ‘hollow’ for the reigning world champion.

It’s important for all of us to take a step back, I’m sure emotions are running high.Lewis Hamilton
He said: “Thank goodness the biggest result for us today is [Max] was uninjured.
“He’s having to go to hospital for precautionary checks after a 51G accident so I hope Lewis is very happy with himself.”
But Hamilton shot back that he has every fight to enjoy the moment.
He told reporters: “It doesn’t feel hollow.
“There are 2,000 people that work incredibly hard in my team, it’s not just about me. I said this is not what I want to happen in a race.
“It’s important for all of us to take a step back, I’m sure emotions are running high [at Red Bull] and I know what it’s like to be in that position.”
    NO APOLOGY
Having only seen the footage back once when he addressed the matter, Hamilton insisted he had no reason to apologise to Verstappen – having served a penalty that he did not agree with.
The Brit added: “I’ve not seen the footage, I will go and have time to reflect on it.
“I don’t think I’m in a position to have to apologise for anything, we’re out there racing. I’ve heard that Max is in hospital and that definitely concerns me. None of us ever want anyone to get injured.
“That’s never my intention so I really hope that he’s ok and I’ll check that he’s ok.
“I don’t agree with the stewards but I take it on the chin and get on with my job. I’m not going to whine about it, everyone is going to have their opinion but I don’t particularly care what people think.”
Hamilton later looked to calm things down by sending his best wishes to ‘incredible counterpart’ Verstappen.
Today is a reminder of the dangers in this sport. I send my best wishes to Max who is an incredible competitor. I’m glad to hear he is ok. I will always race hard but always fairly. My team showed grit and perseverance out there. It’s a dream to win in front of my home crowd💜🇬🇧 pic.twitter.com/3S16uFYmDZ— Lewis Hamilton (@LewisHamilton) July 18, 2021

But the Mercedes ace again refused to apologise for his racing style and celebrations in front of home supporters.
Hamilton tweeted: “Today is a reminder of the dangers in this sport.
“I send my best wishes to Max who is an incredible competitor. I’m glad to hear he is ok.
“I will always race hard but always fairly. My team showed grit and perseverance out there.
“It’s a dream to win in front of my home crowd.”
Hamilton took the win to cut Verstappen’s advantage to eight points in the championship standings.
It came thanks to a late overtake on Charles Leclerc at the same corner he clashed with Verstappen – and he praised the Ferrari star for his ‘respectful’ approach.
Hamilton noted: “Charles was very respectful in leaving a gap.
“I got somewhere alongside him so he knew I was there, but he stayed committed and took a wider line and nearly kept it.
“That was great racing, for me in that moment I backed out at one point to make sure we didn’t hit each other but it was a really nice balance and how racing should go.

“In a perfect world that’s what would have happened [vs Max] but… different time, different place, different driver.
He added: “Max is probably one of the most aggressive drivers here, in my opinion, he does a great job of course.
“But I think we have to really try and find the best balance on track, with space and respect between one another so that we can continue racing and have good races without colliding.”

Charles Leclerc wears ice vest to combat 30C Silverstone temperature before losing British GP to Lewis Hamilton

CHARLES LECLERC wore an ice vest to combat the 30C Silverstone temperatures. But the heat on track proved too much for Ferrari’s French driver as he blew his race-long lead at the death to Lewis Hamilton.
Charles Leclerc wore an ice vest before the British GP… but he blew his lead two laps from the endCredit: Getty
Leclerc took top spot at the British GP on the first lap after a dramatic collision between Hamilton and Max Verstappen, saw the Red Bull ace smash into the barriers at 180mph before dropping out of the race.
After a red-flag delay, Leclerc was ice-cool at the restart in front of a bumper crowd at Silverstone while also being watched by celebs including Tom Cruise in the pit lanes.
And his secret may have been an ice vest he wore before the race started.
The temperature hit over 30C in Britain today, with the race track hitting a crazy 52C.
And it looked like Leclerc’s method was proving to be a winner as he led the race up until the 50th lap.
However, Hamilton ramped up the pressure, closing down Leclerc’s ten-second lead before overtaking him with less than two laps to go.
Hamilton pulled away from his French rival before racing over the finish line as the British GP winner.
But his tangle with Verstappen in the first lap has left a sour taste in Red Bull’s mouth.
Christian Horner fumed: “Thank God he [Verstappen] walked away, that’s the biggest result we will have today.

Lewis Hamilton pulls off huge F1 British Grand Prix win in front of Silverstone fans after penalty for Verstappen crash

IT might be a week late, but finally it did come home. As England beat Italy, even with penalties.Lewis Hamilton overcame a 10-second punishment for clashing with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen before passing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with two laps to go.

An astonishing eighth win for Hamilton in the British Grand Prix came thanks to his victory over the Italian team – making up for last week’s defeat in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.
But this victory aside, which slices Verstappen’s lead in the championship to eight points, it will be his first-lap slash with his title rival which dominates the post-race talk.
This clash had been brewing all season as the opening nine races all passed without incident between the two.
There was even some strange bond developing; all rather unusual for F1 drivers and their egos.
However, we all knew it was only a matter of time before they did clash and in the searing heat of Silverstone, tempers boiled over as Hamilton and Verstappen both became over-run by the occasion.
Hamilton, desperate for a win in front of his home crowd to remain in the title hunt – Verstappen, out to crush his opponent in front of a 140,000 crowd and send out a strong marker.
It led to a thrilling start. Hamilton corrected his error from the previous day and made an excellent getaway from the startline.
The two traded places over nine corners, sending the fans into raptures before the inevitable happened.
Hamilton tagged the rear right of Verstappen’s Red Bull, sending him hurtling into the barriers at 180mph.
The hefty impact was measured with a g-force of 51G and understandable led to a red flag as he was picked out of the wreckage.

The crash mangled the rear end of the Dutchman’s Red Bull
Verstappen was taken to hospital for checks after the 51G hit
Shaken, winded, he was hurt but managed to walk away from his totaled race car, such is the safety of these machines, but was taken to hospital for extra checks.
Red Bull boss, Christian Horner, was furious that Hamilton had tried the overtaking manoeuvre at Copse and blasted the Brit.
He said: “Thank God he walked away, that’s the biggest result we will have today.
“It is very clear Lewis stuck a wheel on the inside on one of the fastest corners on the calendar.
“Lewis has driven here for years and knows you just don’t do that. Thank God we have not had a driver seriously injured.
“It was a desperate move. He failed to make the move in the first part of the lap and then it was just a desperate move.”
Sensing the incoming wrath of the stewards, Toto Wolff was next to try his luck with the stewards as the Mercedes boss emailed Michael Masi, the Race Director.
Only the Aussie gave Wolff short-shrift, telling him to come and see him if he wanted to discuss the matter.
Hamilton too was in no doubt who was in the wrong, telling his team over the radio: “I was ahead going in there, man. Fully alongside, it was my line. He turned in on me, man.”
The upshot from the 40-minute delay to recover Verstappen’s Red Bull racecar and the necessary repairs to the barriers was that Hamilton was issued with a 10-second time penalty.
Rightly or wrongly. He was hit by the sanction, as has become the preference of the stewards in recent races.
    TAKE TWO
At the second restart, Hamilton adopted a different approach as he held second place without putting the squeeze on race leader Charles Leclerc, who had pounced on the tangle to jump him.
Just behind, Lando Norris breezed past Valtteri Bottas while Sebastian Vettel’s spin sunk him to the back of the pack before eventually retiring.
Out in front Leclerc managed some engine issues while Hamilton served his 10-second penalty on lap 28 and when he did return to the race was in fifth place.
But Carlos Sainz’s slow pit stop, plus a neat pass at Copse on Norris – the same place he hit Verstappen – saw Hamilton back up to third.
And then came the order from the Mercedes pitwall for Bottas to allow his teammate through with 12 laps to go.
What would have felt like the final nail in his coffin, extinguishing his hopes of staying with the team next year as Bottas was told: “Team order, do not fight Lewis. We invert the cars into turn 15, this lap.”

Mercedes will hope to kickstart a title fightback after the winCredit: Reuters

With Hamilton up to second. It became a grandstand finish as he hunted down Leclerc for the win, slicing into the Ferrari man’s advantage.
It was classic Hamilton as he pounded out the laps going quicker and quicker as he grew ever-larger in Leclerc’s mirrors.
Finally, he got the move done – again at Copse – and with two laps to go to take the chequered flag in front of a rapturous audience.

Verstappen, 23, was able to gingerly leave his badly damaged car, fortunately appearing largely unhurt by the incident.

    BATTLE OF THE BRITS
Lando Norris has Lewis Hamilton breathing down his neck and going about a second a lap quicker.
And he puts up little fight as the veteran takes third place at Abbey.
    LECLERC PITS
Ferrari do a better job of this one and the race leader spends only 2.6 seconds in the bay.
Charles Leclerc comes out with seven seconds on Valtteri Bottas and 13 clear of Lewis Hamilton, can the Mercs work their magic?
    LAP 30/52
Do not rule out Valtteri Bottas for the win today.
With the fastest lap, the Finn is flying and 26.5 seconds behind Charles Leclerc.
Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz’s stop is very very slow – a 12.3-second tyre change wrecking the good work he did in going long in his first stint.
    HAMILTON PITS
Here comes Lewis Hamilton, who serves ten seconds before his crew can change his tyres.
On go the Hards, eventually, and he comes out behind Lando Norris in fifth.
That leaves a Ferrari one-two, neither of which have stopped.
    LAP 26/52
We are halfway and waiting on who will pit first out of the two leaders.
Charles Leclerc has put over two seconds between himself and Lewis Hamilton, but is still receiving instructions to avoid his engine cut-outs.

    BOTTAS JUMPS NORRIS
That right-rear would just not go on for Lando Norris.
In comes Valtteri Bottas and the Finn is into de-facto third as he leaves the pits only a few car lengths clear of the McLaren.
    MCLARENS PIT
Lando Norris with a slow stop!
That took about four seconds longer than it needed and it may cost the Brit a podium.
    LAP 20/52
Lewis Hamilton not yet able to launch an attack, as Charles Leclerc puts in a new fastest lap.
Behind, Lando Norris is more than holding his own over Valtteri Bottas and the pair are over ten seconds clear of Daniel Ricciardo in fifth.
And a number of the backmarkers are in the pits for Hard tyres, having started on the Mediums.
    HAMILTON ON THE CHARGE
The reigning champ may be sensing blood after that, as Charles Leclerc reports of ANOTHER momentary engine cut-out.
Lewis Hamilton is in DRS range, with the advantage down to under a second…
    LECLERC PROBLEM
Charles Leclerc loses a chunk of time and tells team radio that his engine cut out.
Mercifully for the Ferrari star, it kicks back in and he’s only lost a few tenths.
The team provide a bunch of instructions over radio and tell him: “Everything should be fine now.”
    WHAT WILL LEWIS DO?
Lewis Hamilton has a few options at his disposal.
Does he use up his tyres to try and catch Charles Leclerc, with the aim of overtaking him and driving off into the distance?
Or preserve his tyres, hang back a bit and wait until the Ferrari pits – at which point he gives it the beans.
It appears he’s favouring the latter right now.
We’re onto Lap 13/52. An hour after the start, we’re only a quarter of the way through the race.
    TOP SIX ARE PULLING AWAY
The Mercedes, Ferraris and McLarens are putting a bit of a gap back to the midfield now.
Carlos Sainz in sixth is 4.8 seconds clear of Fernando Alonso in seventh, a gap that is growing while the Spaniard battles Daniel Ricciardo.
How the restart looked as Charles Leclerc held the leadCredit: PA
    LAP 8/52
Valtteri Bottas is fighting back at Lando Norris for a place in third – although it is de facto second with Lewis Hamilton’s penalty.
The Brit puts in the fastest lap in his Mercedes as he looks to make up the time.
    BIG JOB ON FOR HAMILTON
Lewis Hamilton will have to fight his way through the pack after pitting due to that penalty.
Sergio Perez is also a guy to keep an eye on, starting from the back he is now 14th and on the charge.
Sebastian Vettel takes his place in 19th, replays show how he just lost control while battling for position and performed a 360.
    LEWIS PENALTY
It’s a ten-second time penalty for Lewis Hamilton.
He will serve it when he pits.
    LECLERC LEADS
As we begin Lap 5, over 45 minutes after the race began, Charles Leclerc has opened up a second lead over Lewi Hamilton.
    VETTEL SPINS
Sebastian Vettel is off but keeps it out of the barrier.
    GO GO GO… AGAIN!
This time Lewis Hamilton does not get the jump, but Lando Norris did and is third.
    FORMATION LAP
We will have a formation lap and then another standing start off the grid.
Let’s keep it clean this time, eh lads?

    WE RACE AGAIN
The red flag period is over and the safety car leads the pack out of the pits.
    ‘RELIEF’
Christian Horner has confirmed that Max Verstappen was able to walk to the medical centre for checks.
It was an absolutely mega 51G crash.

But, heading into Silverstone’s notorious high-speed Copse Corner, Hamilton darted down the inside and pulled up alongside Verstappen.
The Dutchman squeezed Hamilton, making contact and hurtling across the gravel into the tyre barrier.
Medics checked on Verstappen who gingerly exited the car but thankfully appeared to be unhurt.
Hamilton reported damage having lost the lead to Charles Leclerc, and returned to the pits once the race was red flagged.
He said on the team radio: “He turned in on me man. I gave that guy space.”
The collision is believed to have occurred with the pair both at 180mph.
Fuming Red Bull boss Christian Horner told Channel 4 that Hamilton was ‘completely out of order to stick a wheel up the inside’.
He added: “Everyone who’s driven that corner knows you don’t stick a wheel up the inside at Copse.
“He’s put him in the fence. Thank god he’s not been hurt. It was a desperate move.

He said after the historic event: “Every point counts, but I’m grateful to have finished and tomorrow we fight again.
“They’re just so strong, there was nothing I could do to hold onto him.

    MORE ON RUSSELL
F1 bosses have explained their reason for punishing George Russell ahead of tomorrow’s British Grand Prix.
The Williams driver has been penalised for making contact with Ferrari star Carlos Sainz at turn six of the first lap.
Russell is alleged to have locked up and gone into Sainz, causing the latter to go into the grass and qualify in P11 – seven places behind team-mate Charles Leclerc.
The stewards ruling said: “Cars 63 [Russell] and 55 [Sainz] approached turn 6 with Car 63 on the inside, in the middle of the track, and Car 55 on the outside.
“Car 63 locked the front brakes briefly and then understeered towards the edge of the track at the exit of the turn and contacted Car 55, which was forced off the circuit and on to the grass.
“Car 63 is judged at fault for the incident.”
BREAKING NEWS – RUSSELL DROPS TO 12TH
George Russell has been given a three-place grid penalty ahead of the British Grand Prix.
The Williams driver had qualified in P9 – an impressive return considering team-mate Nicholas Latifi could manage only P17.
But he will now start the race in P12 for his role in the incident with Ferrari star Carlos Sainz during the F1 Sprint.

Max Verstappen will start tomorrow’s British Grand Prix on pole.
He told the press: “Around here it is difficult to pass but we had a good start.
“I had a good fight with Lewis on the first lap, then we just tried to do our own pace. We were trying to push each other hard but you could see by the end of the race, the tyres were blistering hard.
“Nevertheless, Happy to have scored us three points. It’s a little bit funny to be stood here but you’ve scored a pole position, so we’ll take it. Again, it will be an exciting battle tomorrow.
“We start the race on lower fuel and then we can really push these cars through the faster corners, lap after lap, so it’s very hard on the tyres. But it’s the same for everyone, so we have to deal with it.
“We can’t touch the car. We are quick in corners, so hopefully we can do the same tomorrow. But the straight-line speed, after FP1, you can not make any changes, so it’s a bit tricky for us now, we’ll have to deal with it. I still think we can have a strong race.
“Big thank you to the fans. I know they are here for the British drivers, but it’s still great to see them cheering and giving support.”
    BOTTAS REACTION
Valtteri Bottas has qualified P3 for the British Grand Prix.
He told the press: “We tried to do something different and the target was to try and get [Verstappen] in the first lap.
“It didn’t happen, I think he had a good start as well. In Turn One I was slightly blocked, I couldn’t really use the momentum but we tried.
“In the end, it’s nice to keep the place with the soft tyres, even though there was some blistering.
“Today shows that tomorrow is not going to be easy.
“If it’s going to be a bit warmer, then we might see more issues, but at least now we are definitely aware and anything can happen.”

GOOD DAY FOR THE OTHER BRITS
Lando Norris starts fifth in tomorrow’s race with team-mate Daniel Ricciardo for company on the third row.
And while George Russell lost a place to finish ninth, he held his own and is well set for a shot at a point in the Grand Prix.
First, he’ll await the result of an investigation into his collision with Carlos Sainz on Lap 1.

    FINAL STANDINGS
Here is how sprint qualifying ended, which will be tomorrow’s grid – barring any penalties.

    TOO SOFT
Valtteri Bottas started on the softer tyre than the front two, but it provided little help in chasing them down.
He notes: “The target was to get [Max] at the start, it didn’t happen. But we tried and I still managed to keep the place.”
    LEWIS REACTS
Lewis Hamilton is very audibly gutted after that, the sprint race certainly mattered to him.
He adds that qualifying on a Friday was great fun but that race may not have been great entertainment, with the Brit suggesting he’d keep a somewhat rejigged sprint format.
He says: “Every point counts, but I’m grateful to have finished and tomorrow we fight again.
“They’re just so strong, there was nothing I could do to hold onto him.
“They’ve done a great job with their engine, their starts are really good and we’ve lost a bit of performance in the starts.”
    MAX THANKS THE FANS
There are no doubt a few Max Verstappen fans out at Silverstone.
The Dutchman says: “I know the British drivers have a bit more support but it’s been great to see and I want a great battle at the front.”
    LORRY LOAD
The top-three drivers jump on a truck for a ‘victory lap’ around Silverstone, during which Jenson Button grabs their reaction.
Max Verstappen, donning his retro wreath, says: “We had a really good start and a good fight with Lewis.
“We tried to run our own race but they pushed us hard and our tyres were blistering quite bad towards the end.”
