‘Very important relationship’ – Lewis Hamilton reveals most vital ally in F1 title battle with Max Verstappen

LEWIS HAMILTON has revealed his most important ally in his battle with Max Verstappen for the F1 title. The seven-time world champion is locked in a straight fight with the Dutchman, who currently leads the championship by six points with six races to go.

At 36, Hamilton is 12 years older than the Red Bull ace and says that he would not be in the title fight without the help of his physiotherapist and trainer, Angela Cullen.
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s US GP, Hamilton said: “Angela is with me until 10pm or 11pm every day –  and with me from 6am or 7am every morning.
“It’s a very, very important role. A very important relationship. I don’t think this year has brought us any closer together than any other year because we are incredibly close as it is, but we love our job.
“We love doing what we do, we love doing it together, and I’m incredibly grateful to have her on the road, I don’t think I could do it without her.”
Cullen, 47, was born in New Zealand and played hockey for her country before becoming a performance coach.
She started working with Hamilton in 2016 having worked with F1 fitness guru Aki Hintsa, who was close to Hamilton when he drove for McLaren.

But she is more than just his physio and trainer, often taking the role of dietician, driver, friend and confidant.
The married mum-of-two lives with her husband and kids in the Alps. She also had a matching tattoo, with the F1 champ as they both have “loyalty” tattooed on their wrists.
Hamilton added: “Angela and I are naturally incredibly close, we pretty much live together.
“We’re close friends also so I’m very, very lucky to have found Angela because she’s a very special human being.
“When I got to F1 I didn’t have a trainer and when I got there I was given a trainer at the time, they’re all called physios.
“And, a couple of the trainers I had were not physios, but they were called physios for the race weekend.
“And it was usually a guy that I was working with, would be on the road with me and train with me.
“And then I started to notice I was having issues every now and then again with small injuries popping up, or you realise you’ve got a neck problem or whatever it might be.

“And I never had anyone to be able to fix that, and it’s not until after I look back and I’d see Angela.
“So I said why don’t you come on the road with me, because I’m not training on race weekends, I need physio that knows my body and knows what it needs to be as prepared as possible for a race weekend, and then when I’m away I can train with her.
“We’ve grown together in terms of how we manage our weekends, how we prepare, taking the least stressed route, and just making sure I’m as fresh as I can be when I get in the car.”

PRACTICE 2 IS DONE – PEREZ LEADS THE WAY BUT VERSTAPPEN DID NOT DO A QUALIFYING RUN
The Dutchman is keeping his powder dry, and it is the Mexican who is quickest as Red Bull look like they have improved.
Norris in P2, Hamilton P3 and Bottas in P4. Verstappen down in eighth.

    CRASH FOR ALONSO
The Spaniard loses control and spins into the barriers, but he is moving again. His car looks undamaged and he’s back in the garage.

    10 MINUTES TO GO
And it is still Perez at the top of the timesheets as the team complete their long runs.

    PEREZ LEADS THE WAY
Norris, Hamilton, Bottas, Ricciardo, Stroll, Leclerc, Verstappen, Sainz, Giovinazzi is the top 10 at just after the halfway stage of FP2.

    VERSTAPPEN BLASTS HAMILTON
The two come close during practice as Hamilton comes close to the Red Bull.
Verstappen snaps over the radio: “Ha! Stupid idiot!”
He is told to “ignore it” by his race engineer.

NORRIS IS BACK IN THE PITS
“Something’s come loose on my elbow, I can’t turn properly,” Norris says over the team’s radio.
He’s back in the garage as the team investigate the problem.
FP2 IS GO – MERCEDES WERE AWESOME IN PRACTICE ONE
Can Red Bull fight back? Or are they saving engines? Either way, it looks a straight fight between the two teams.

TOTO WOLFF HAS BEEN SPEAKING ABOUT MERC’S ENGINE PROBLEMS
Remember, Bottas has a new engine this week, triggering a penalty.
Merc customers, Williams and Aston Martin have also taken new engines for Russell and Vettel, respectively.
And it could mean bad news for Lewis Hamilton, who could face more grid penalties for taking a new engine.Wolff admits the team have struggled with reliability this season as their complicated power units are pushed to the limit in their fight with Red Bull.Hamilton was given a 10-place grid drop last out in Turkey for taking a new internal combustion engine and he had to settle for finishing the race in fifth.Wolff snapped on Sky F1 when quizzed that the team’s engine woe was being caused by “air valves”.He blasted: “You are being fed with a lot of bull***t. We don’t need to talk about air valves or anything like this because you and I wouldn’t understand what it is.”He was later pressed to reveal the cause of their unreliability and added: “I would not want to disclose what it is for obvious reasons but it is always a concern.”When you look at Monza where Valtteri had to start at the back, we are losing points.”We are trying to push the performance every year and this year it has cost us points but for the last seven years, that mindset has won us races and championships.”I would have hoped for less penalties and used less engines, but this year it has hit us hard and we have to take it on the chin and do the best possible job.”Wolff says Merc are now weighing up whether to up Hamilton’s engine count too through fear of it failing mid-race.He said: “I cannot say whether we will be taking or what the percentage is, but obviously the risk is there.”What is difficult to evaluate is do you want to pre-empt the situation and take a penalty, take the hit.”Or do you want to run it and take the risk, which could be a DNF? That is a discussion we are having at the moment.”
LECLERC AND SAINZ IN P4 AND P5
Different tyres used for Perez and Sainz.

BOTTAS NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH AN ENGINE PENALTY
George Russell also takes a new unit in his Williams, as does Sebastian Vettel at Aston Martin.
The team can confirm that George has taken new power unit elements this weekend and therefore will incur a grid penalty.Still plenty to play for this weekend, GR 👊 pic.twitter.com/9IaV21rpRO— Williams Racing (@WilliamsRacing) October 22, 2021

HORNER KEEPING CALM ABOUT MERC’S ENGINE WOES
The Red Bull boss said: “Mercedes obviously have their reason for taking it and they must be having a few issues.”Under normal circumstances, [our engines] should be ok, but you can never say never.”
    BOTTAS LEADS THE WAY
The Finn is in P1, Hamilton is second and Verstappen third-fastest in Austin.

BOTTAS’S ENGINE PENALTY IS A CONCERN FOR HAMILTON
That is a SIXTH unit for the Finn, as Mercedes are clearly worried about their ICE. That could mean that Hamilton is due a new one too, he took a new ICE in Turkey.

AND A SPECIAL LID FOR LANDO
The McLaren man also has a cool helmet for this race.

ALONSO IS BACK IN THE GARAGE
    Bad start for the Spaniard.

    BOTTAS HAS AN ENGINE PENALTY…
Valtteri Bottas has taken a sixth ICE of the season which means he is set for a grid penalty on Sunday.
SPECIAL HELMET FOR BOTTAS THIS WEEKEND
The Finn has a one-off helmet for Austin. And it’s pretty cool.

    MISTAKE FOR LECLERC
The Ferrari man has a spin but stays out of the barriers. He is now on his way back to the pits for some new tyres.
HAMILTON QUICK TO SET THE BENCHMARK
The Mercedes man goes quickest. Early days yet, but he is faster than Verstappen.
GREEN LIGHT – FP1 IN AUSTIN IS GO – BUSY TRACK AS THERE IS PLENTY OF EARLY RUNNING

‘Show how beautiful the motherland is’ – Lewis Hamilton pleads for return of South African GP after 28-year absence

LEWIS HAMILTON has backed plans for F1 to return to South Africa, with a deal looming for 2023.Track bosses at the Kyalami circuit are hopeful that the circuit can join the already-bursting schedule of races.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has already unveiled plans for a record-breaking campaign in 2022, set at 23 races.
And Hamilton says that Africa needs to have a race, along with multiple races in America.
He said: “The place that I really feel, to my heart, is most important to me is to get a race back in South Africa.
“I think there is a great following out there and I think it would be great to highlight how beautiful the motherland is.
“The US Grand Prix is fantastic. It is such a huge country, having just one race here for sure is not enough to really tap into the sporting culture here.
“Definitely we need to have two, but there are so many great cities to have a grand prix.

“They are going to have one in Miami, it is going to be incredible, as is Austin.
“I don’t know where they’ll have the next one.
“I think that is quite cool, having these kind of little mini championships in each continent, it is not a bad thing for the sport.”
The South African Grand Prix has not taken place since 1993, when Alain Prost beat out rivals Ayrton Senna and Mark Blundell to claim first place.
The race became a hugely popular event on the F1 circuit in the 1960’s, but was suspended in 1985 due to the country’s policy of Apartheid.
Following the end of Apartheid in 1991, the race was held two more times in 1992 and 1993, but has not returned to the world championship circuit since.
A return was rumoured in 2018 when Adrian Scholtz, CEO of Motorsport South Africa, discussed the possibility of the country hosting another Grand Prix in the near future.
But he revealed that no South African racetrack currently fulfils the FIA requirements to host a Formula One race, with Kyalami the best possible option.

Inside Christian Horner’s lavish country mansion Red Bull boss shares with Spice Girl Geri & three miniature donkeys

RED BULL boss Christian Horner is used to living life in the fast lane working in F1.But when it comes to his personal life, the team principal of the motorsport giants prefers a more quiet and slower existence away from the race track.

He shares TWO stunning country homes with wife, Spice Girl Geri in Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire and their brood.
The former property is, perhaps, the most lavish and most shared online – boasting its very own duck pond, which they use for boating.
Their farm also houses three miniature donkeys, horses and goats in the estate’s stables.
    ‘PERFECT’
For Horner, living on a farm offers the ideal existence away from the stresses of the F1 circuit.
Back in 2019, he told Luxury London that the sprawling country abode was the “perfect home to relax in.”
“Restoring the farm has been my hobby – the way I put racing out of my mind,” he added.
“The main house is finished but now the barns are being converted. We’re currently putting the finishing touches to an indoor swimming pool.”

Certainly, it’s the property in Oxfordshire that gets the most love from Geri on Instagram, who regularly shares candid snaps of her family life.
Horner is stepdad to Geri’s daughter Bluebell Madonna, 15, and the couple share a son, Montague, who is 4. He also has another daughter, Olivia, 8, from a previous relationship with ex-partner Beverley Allen.

Christian has been spied alongside his boy riding a mini tractor alongside dad’s John Deere.
He’s also been seen standing with his vintage Aston Martin DB5, which was Sean Connery’s car of choice as James Bond in Goldfinger.
    READY STEADY COOK
Geri appears happy to play the role of housewife, often sharing photos in the kitchen rustling up treats.
A budding chef, she has shown off her baking skills by crafting cakes using a customised Ginger Spice KitchenAid mixer, which Christian had specially designed for her.
And with four separate ovens to choose from with the AGA range the kitchen boasts, she has plenty of space for her other favourite pastime – making bread.
You can bet, Christian, who also loves using the outdoor barbecue, and the kids are well fed in the Horner household with Geri’s production line of cakes and bread.

    ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK
Christian and Geri have a number of reception room to entertain from.
However, the most popular one appears to be where a £16,000 original Wurlitzer can be found.
When she celebrated her 45th birthday, Geri posted a video online singing along to Michael Jackson hit Billie Jean while thanking Christian for the music, which suggested it was a gift for her.
Another living room shows off a stunning chandelier, as well as a marble fireplace.

    OUTDOOR SPACE
The family love taking advantage of the huge grounds on offer at their farmhouse.
And why not when you’ve got an incredible duck pond so big you can go boating on it.
Horner and Geri can even take their dogs for a walk around the expansive gardens.
The pair have even been seen zooming around on a quad bike, as well as picking raspberries in the garden with Montague.

Of course, no farm would be complete without animals either.
And Christian and Geri boast three miniature donkeys that are housed in the stables, as well as some goats.
The singer often shares videos online when it’s feeding time.
Clearly, you can forget the fancy racing circuit of heading to places like Dubai or Monte Carlo. A farmhouse is where it’s at.

Lewis Hamilton’s arch rival Max Verstappen slams Netflix’s ‘fake’ Drive to Survive series as he refuses to star in show

RED BULL star Max Verstappen has declared he will not be taking part in season four of Netflix’s Drive to Survive docuseries. The 24-year-old has hit out at the hit TV show as he branded it as ‘fake’, claiming it is edited to portray rivalries that do not exist.
Max Verstappen has announced he will not be taking part in the upcoming season of Drive to SurviveCredit: Reuters
Dutch driver Verstappen previously criticised the fly-on-the-wall documentary in March 2020 where he where he stated he wasn’t happy with how he was viewed.
And the championship leader has now announced he is refusing to be involved in the upcoming season, which will be released after the 2021 World Championship.
The Netflix show gives fans a behind-the-scenes look from the F1 season, showing exclusive interviews from drivers as well as action from each Grand Prix.
But don’t expect to see Verstappen, who could win his first World title this year, in season four.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s United States Grand Prix, he told the Associated Press: “I understand that it needs to be done to boost the popularity in America.
“But from my side as a driver, I don’t like being part of it.”

He continued: “They faked a few rivalries which they don’t really exist.
“So I decided to not be a part of it and did not give any more interviews after that because then there is nothing you can show.
“I am not really a dramatic show kind of person, I just want facts and real things to happen.”
Verstappen – who leads Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton by six points in the standings – then went on to state how Netflix will oversell his rivalry with the 26-year-old.
He remarked: “Probably in the Netflix show we will be.

“We one time bumped into each other walking, so probably that will be in there.”
Fans will be disappointed not to see Verstappen in the show with supporters voting him as their current favourite F1 driver.
A whopping 167,302 fans from 187 countries took part in F1’s biggest-ever survey, which saw Verstappen come out in first place, followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris and Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton rescued from his motorhome after getting LOCKED IN before US Grand Prix press conference

The Brit was stuck and had to be saved by a member of his team who found out the key-code to open the door.
Hamilton was late for his own press conference and apologised after revealing his struggle.
He said: “I am sorry I am late. I got locked in my room and I couldn’t get out!
“But it feels good to be back here [in Austin]. We’ve had a very warm welcome from my fans and it is a place with some great memories.
“We always have a great crowd here and great races, so I am excited to be back for the first time in two years.”
Hamilton’s false start to the weekend comes as he eyes up victory in Texas, a track where he has won five times in eight years.

He currently trails Max Verstappen by six points with six races remaining and admits he must get the maximum points from this weekend.
He added: “It’s important to win all the races. We need to maximise our points over the next six races.
“There will be times when we can beat them, but in Mexico they can be strong again. A lot can happen in six races, we will take it race by race.”
Hamilton, who has been knocked off his perch as F1’s No.1 driver according to a fan survey, was voted in third place in the popularity contest, behind Verstappen and countryman Lando Norris.
