Lewis Hamilton in centre of F1 cheat storm as Red Bull threaten to protest legality of Mercedes car and its rear wing

LEWIS HAMILTON is at the centre of an F1 cheat storm.Bitter title rivals Red Bull are threatening to protest the legality of his Mercedes car.

Red Bull chief Christian Horner claims its rear wing breaks FIA rules by flexing too much at speed – giving Hamilton a huge amount of extra pace.
And ahead of this weekend’s crucial Qatar Grand Prix, Horner declared: “The straight line performance in the last two Grands Prix has gone exponential and that concerns us.
“Make no bones about it, if we see it on the car here it will be protested. If we believe the Mercedes car is not in compliance, we will protest.”
Hamilton fought back from grid penalties totalling 25 places to win the last GP in Brazil – cutting the gap to Red Bull’s championship leader Max Verstappen to 14 points.
Mercedes insist their car is legal and team boss Toto Wolff declared: “Nobody would show up with an illegal engine or rear wing.
“The world is too transparent for that.”

But Horner added: “When you see marks on the rear wing endplates that have been marking up from wings flexing, it is very clear what has been going on.
“It’s hidden in the way it operates, so  it’s harder to spot from a camera.”
The 48-year-old also remarked how he has no relationship with Mercedes counterpart Wolff.
When quizzed about their relationship, Horner said: “There is no relationship.
“This is the first time they have been challenged and it is interesting to see how people react when they are challenged.
“Relationships and respect are different things, there is respect for everything Mercedes have done, everything Lewis Hamilton has done.
“I don’t need to go to dinner with Toto, I don’t need to kiss his a***. It is a competition, it is great that we are in this position and fighting.

‘No relationship’ – Horner ignites row with Wolff at tense F1 Qatar press conference & questions ‘rear wing’ score marks

PANTO season came early in Doha after Red Bull boss Christian Horner and Merc boss Toto Wolff bickered like a pair of ugly sisters. It came after a FIVE DAY rendition of ‘oh yes he did..’ ended with the FIA deciding that ‘oh, not he didn’t’ with regards to Max Verstappen illegally forcing Lewis Hamilton off track in Brazil.

Mercedes’ request for a right to review was turned down by the stewards as the Qatar GP turned into a right old carry on.
And it sparked a bitter fall out between Horner and Wolff on stage, with the Red Bull chief taunting his rival.
When quizzed about their relationship, Horner said: “There is no relationship.
“This is the first time they have been challenged and it is interesting to see how people react when they are challenged.
“Relationships and respect are different things, there is respect for everything Mercedes have done, everything Lewis Hamilton has done.

“It would be dishonest in many respects to fake a facade when you’re competing against your rivals.”
Horner’s barb was epic knock-about fun but there are serious tensions below this classic Punch and Judy show.
And with it comes the threat of more protests and appeals lobbied at F1’s sluggish stewards that threaten the outcome of this title race.
Wolff added: “We don’t want to end up after Saudi Arabia or Abu Dhabi, wherever it may end and then going to the stewards’ rooms or because one the teams felt it wasn’t treated rightly.
“Now is the time in this very championship to discuss the rules.

“Olympic boxing went to pro boxing and is now MMA, but that is okay, we are in the ring now trying to do the best job possible.
“Elbows are allowed now because the rules say so and the gloves are off.”
And in yet more fighting talk, Horner has revealed his team would launch a protest about the legality of their opponent’s car, centering on their flexible rear wing, which failed an FIA test in Sao Paulo.
Horner added: “Would I protest? Yeah, absolutely. If we believe the car is not in compliance, we will protest.
“The straight line speeds that we’ve seen in Mexico and in Brazil, I mean, I think everybody could see Brazil was not a normal situation.
“And yes, a new engine we know with Mercedes comes with increased performance.
Here is the full line-up for the 2022 Formula 1 season
“But when you have a 27 kilometre [per hour] difference, and you see marks on rear end plates that have been marked up from wings that have been flexing.
“It’s very clear to us what has been going on. So, of course, that’s why it’s down the FIA to make sure that the cars are in compliance.
“If they’re not, you protest if you believe that a competitor isn’t complying with the rules.”

F1 Qatar Grand Prix LIVE: FP2 in progress, Verstappen faster than Hamilton in FP1 – results, stream, latest updates

MAX VERSTAPPEN and Lewis Hamilton are continuing their epic title tussle in Qatar this weekend. After the Mercedes star stormed back to win in style last week in Brazil, the season now heads to the desert and the Losail Circuit.
Get set for three days of high-octane racing, starting with practice today where Verstappen has already shown his speed by going fastest in FP1.

UK start time: FP2 from 2pm
TV/Live stream: Sky Sports F1/NOW TV

Follow all the latest with our live blog from Qatar below…
    ALL OVER
That’s it for today, Bottas finishes top while Gasly comes in at second.
While Verstappen and Hamilton end the second practice in third and fourth respectively.
    STANDINGS
Here’s how things stand with only 10 minutes to go.

    Bottas 1:23.148
    Gasly +0.209
    Verstappen +0.350
    Hamilton +0.422
    Norris
    Stroll
    Tsunoda
    Perez
    Vettel
    Sainz

    MAX OVERLAP
Max Verstappen has flown past Hamilton.
But he’s still only third, behind Pierre Gasly and more than three tenths behind Bottas out in front.
    GASLY SPEEDS
Pierre Gasly has overtaken Lewis Hamilton to clinch second on the timesheet for AlphaTauri with a speed of 0.209s.
    SLOW MAX
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finishes lap 0.4 seconds down on Valtteri Bottas.
That 1:23.579, which leaves him fourth, isn’t much quicker than what he managed on the medium tyres.
    PEREZ TROUBLE
Sergio Perez was going for a hot lap, but encountered traffic around the Turns 4-5 double right complex.
Slow-mo shots of Perez on the pit straight show the top edge of his rear wing flapping to an alarming degree.
    MAX SPEED
Valtteri Bottas only went a half-second faster than Max Verstappen on the soft tyre.
    BOT SPOT
Valtteri Bottas is the first on-track and lowers his existing benchmark at the top of the timesheet.
Lewis Hamilton only makes a small improvement himself and stays second.
    TOP OFF
Ferrari had the engine cover off Charles Leclerc’s car. They seem to have fixed the problem and he looks set to resume.
    PROBLEM FOR HAMILTON?
Strange. He is out of his Merc. There could yet be another big development here in Doha.
FP2 IS GO – GREEN LIGHT IN QATAR
Second session is underway here. Verstappen topped FP1 and remember, has been told he will not face any further retrospective action from his defence to Hamilton in Brazil.
    NO MOVEMENT
Lewis Hamilton has slammed the press for suggesting his steering wheel moved in the Brazil GP.
When asked about his steering column’s alleged movement, Hamilton said: “My steering column doesn’t move forwards and backwards.
“We had that last year, we don’t have it now. On Saturday there was a little bit of play in it, less than a millimetre probably, that I don’t like so they had to change the column and (then) there was no play.
“So I’m not really sure what you’re watching.”
    MAX LET OFF
Mercedes have had their request to review Max Verstappen’s move on Lewis Hamilton DENIED by Formula One stewards.
The incident occurred on lap 48 of the Brazil GP as Verstappen cut in front of Hamilton, forcing both men off the track.
The Brit ultimately went on to win the race and cut Verstappen’s lead in the driver standings to just 14 points.
But Mercedes still pressed for F1 stewards to review the footage with Verstappen possibly facing a penalty.
After FOUR days of deliberation the request has been denied and Verstappen has escaped without punishment.
New footage had emerged from Verstappen’s on-board camera, but that has been deemed ‘relevant’ but not ‘significant’ by the FIA.
    NOT FAIR
Ralf Schumacher has questioned Mercedes engine change and thinks they shouldn’t have been allowed to do so mid-season.
According to Ralf, engines should only be changed when needed, not because of wear and tear which was the case for Mercedes.
He told Sky: “Mercedes only changed it because it was showing too much wear from the previous races. It wasn’t broken,” the German insists.
“But that’s not the point of Formula 1. I find it a bit questionable.
“In my opinion, an engine should only be changed when it has to be. And if Mercedes has more wear and tear and less performance than the others, that’s their problem.
“You shouldn’t be able to take advantage like this.”
    LEW ARE BRILLIANT
Lewis Hamilton has been praised by fans for wearing a rainbow helmet at the Qatar Grand Prix in support of the LGBTQ+ community.
Homosexuality is criminalised in Qatar, where this weekend’s crucial race takes place.
During today’s practice, Hamilton donned a rainbow-coloured helmet, in solidarity with those that are persecuted simply for their sexuality in the gulf state.
The back of the helmet featured the message: “We stand together.”
Fans were impressed with the 36-year-old’s gesture.
One wrote on social media: “WAIT is Hamilton wearing a pride flag on his helmet this weekend in f***ing QATAR? I love this man.”
A second added: “Big balls move, like it.”
And another commented: “I may not be a fan of him but I can f***ing respect that.”
FP1 IS DONE – VERSTAPPEN LEADS THE WAY
The Red Bull man draws first blood in his battle for the title.
Pierre Gasly is second, Valtteri Bottas is third. Lewis Hamilton in fourth.
HAMILTON IS NOW OUT ON TRACK
But his late run is going to be scuppered as Mick Schumacher goes into the gravel.
His Haas picks up a lot of stones and while he is running again, he is dropping them all over the track. What a mess.
INTERESTING SCENES IN THE MERC GARAGE
Some work being done on Hamilton’s car and the team have formed a human shield around his car to prevent the TV cameras from showing what they are working on.
    Let the games begin!
    HALFWAY STAGE
It is Verstappen, Bottas and Hamilton…
    Game on.
    TYRE TESTING
So with the early runs completed and every driver well in to double figures for laps, Pirelli report that all the compounds have been used.
Why is that relevant? Teams, including Pirelli, have limited amount of information on how their tyres work on this circuit, which is predominately used for MotoGP.
The teams will use all the data gathered to build detailed simulations and software models to work out how long each tyre will take to heat up, and how long it will last in these conditions.

    VERSTAPPEN SETS THE EARLY BENCHMARK
The Dutchman sits at the top of the timesheets after 25 minutes, as the drivers get used to the track.
    Hamilton is in P4.

    MORE IMAGES OF LEWIS’S LID
Special helmet in Qatar with the message “we stand together” on the back.
    FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF THIS TRACK?
Well, it’s pretty flat. And boring, as circuits go, this is not a patch on Silverstone, Spa, Interlagos or Monza.
    PROBLEMS FOR HAMILTON
The defending champion says he is “massively down on power” as sets a time that is only 14th quickest.
All eyes on Mercedes at the moment, especially with that rear wing, which failed scrutineering in Brazil, triggering his disqualification from qualifying.

F1 chiefs REJECT Mercedes’ request to review Max Verstappen’s defence from Lewis Hamilton at Brazil GP

He charged up from tenth on the grid, passing Verstappen en route, to keep his hopes of a record eighth championship alive.
But Mercedes still pressed for F1 stewards to review the footage with Verstappen possibly facing a penalty.
After FIVE days of deliberation the request has now been denied and Verstappen escapes without punishment.
New footage had emerged from the Dutchman’s on-board camera of the clash with Hamilton, but that has been deemed ‘relevant’ and not ‘significant’ by the FIA.
A spokesperson said: “[Mercedes’] position is that the new footage provides sufficient information for the stewards to come to an altogether different conclusion to the one they did previously.
“However, the stewards determine that the footage shows nothing exceptional that is particularly different form the other angles that were available to them at the time.
“Thus, the stewards determine that the footage, here, is not ‘significant’.”

Despite lodging for a review, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has admitted he is not surprised by the decision.
He said: “Completely expected. We wanted to trigger a discussion around it because probably it will be a theme in the next few races and I think that objective is achieved. We didn’t really think it would go any further.”
Wolff has suggested the request for a review was in fact a tactic, with the wheel-to-wheel action expected in the final three races of the season sure to be highly scrutinised.
Wolff coyly told Sky Sports: “What have we achieved? I think we have achieved a public discussion around it because I see a risk that we will see it happening in the next races,
“It could well end up in the stewards’ room or the court room if people aren’t happy with how it is being raced out there.
“It’s fine with us. Absolutely. It’s hard racing. If this is the regulations, then let’s just move on and race exactly that way and I think this is clear now.
Meanwhile Red Bull chief Christian Horner quipped: “It’s obviously the right decision because it would have opened a Pandora’s box of a whole load of incidents at that race.”
Horner also went on to advise Hamilton on how he should have approached Verstappen’s move, and looked ahead to this weekend’s Qatar GP.
He continued: “I was surprised at the hearing in the first place because we saw many incidents at Turn 4 both in the sprint race and in the actual Grand Prix.
“It was just two drivers probably out-braking themselves. If Lewis had been smart, he would have gone for the cutback like Checo had with Valtteri.
“It’s good news that it’s full focus on this weekend now.”

This weekend isn’t the first time that Hamilton has spoken up for LGBTQ+ rights this season.
Prior to the Hungarian Grand Prix back in July, he offered his full support.
He said: “To all in this beautiful country Hungary. Ahead of the Grand Prix this weekend, I want to share my support for those affected by the government’s anti-LGBTQ+ law.
“It is unacceptable, cowardly and misguiding for those in power suggest such a law. Everyone deserves to have the freedom to be themselves, no matter who they love or how they identify.
“I urge the people of Hungary to vote in the upcoming referendum to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, they need our support more than ever.”
Following his stunning victory in the face of adversity last week in Sao Paulo, British hero Hamilton remains in the championship mix this weekend.
With just three Grands Prix left, the driving legend trails Max Verstappen by 14 points.

Verstappen ‘should be punished for FORCING Hamilton off track’ in Brazil – but Dutchman confident he’ll avoid action

MAX VERSTAPPEN should be slapped with a penalty for ‘forcing’ Lewis Hamilton off track – according to former F1 driver, Jolyon Palmer. That is even though the star denies he did nothing wrong.

FIA stewards will today decide if they need to review the flashpoint from the Brazilian GP where Hamilton and Verstappen went off track when fighting for the lead.
If they do decide to investigate, Verstappen could be hit with a time penalty, which would cost him a drop in points, or he could risk a grid drop for this Sunday’s Qatar GP.
And Palmer says that the stewards have a big call to make with regard to setting a benchmark going forward, but for him, the Dutchman WAS in the wrong.
He said: “I’m dubious about the decision. For me, it raises questions about precedents for racing in the future — and from a sporting point of view, it didn’t make sense to me.
“I’m sure that this was an immensely tough decision for the stewards to make, given everything at stake with their decision here, and the weight of the outcome hanging over them.
“But for me, it was a clear case of forcing another driver off track.

BETTING SPECIAL – GET ÂŁ50 IN FREE BETS WITH WILLIAM HILL
“Had Verstappen managed to at least stay on the track himself then I think we would be in the grey area seen so many times already this year.
“Is it hard defence and the driver on the outside has to back off, or is it squeezing another driver off the road?
“If this sort of defensive manoeuvre is now acceptable, how can we expect another move to be completed around the outside, so long as there is the ever more popular asphalt run-off?”
Red Bull man Verstappen is waiting to learn if he will face any punishment for running Hamilton off the road in Sao Paulo.
But when quizzed if he would do the defence again on turn four of lap 48 at Interlagos, Verstappen said: “Yes. As a driver, I think we know exactly what we can and can’t do in the car.
“We were fighting hard, breaking late into the corner and the tyres were worn. If I had turned more abruptly to the left he would have just spun off.”
Mercedes were today trying to convince the stewards from the race in Brazil to reconsider their decision not to punish Verstappen at the time.
It is baffling that it has taken over FOUR DAYS to come to a decision – yet the FIA are concerned about opening up a can of worms when it comes to future punishments.
    ‘A LOT OF FUN’
When quizzed if he watched the footage from his car, which Mercedes are using in the hope of reexamining the case, Verstappen said: “No. I didn’t need to look at the footage because I was driving the car and I knew exactly what happened.
“Like I said, I thought it was a great battle and I had a lot of fun. At the end of the day they won the race – far enough they were faster than us but it was a good battle.
“I think it is quite normal when it is between two teams, not just one team with two drivers.
And then asked if he would be surprised if he picked up a time penalty for the result in Brazil, he added: “If, if if….
“It is not the end of the world but I don’t expect that to happen, I think it was fair and hard racing between two guys fighting for the championship.
“It wouldn’t have been in any way an easy pass and we are fighting for the title. I was trying my best but my tyres were finished so I was just sliding to the finish.”
Hamilton was coy on his opinion on the flashpoint, but while he initially brushed it off as hard racing, he now said he had changed his opinions.
    ‘RESPECT IS IMPORTANT’
He said: “I think the reason I said at the time was the mentality you have to take. If you sit in the car at the moment and complain it will only hold you back.
“It is difficult to judge when you haven’t seen all the angles, of course I’ve relooked at it and I have a different viewpoint, naturally now.
“Right now, I know the team are in discussion so I am just leaving them to it. Respect is important and that we remain respectful of one another on and off track.”
Meanwhile, Mercedes are expected to face fresh scrutiny over the rear wing on Hamilton’s car, which was confiscated in Brazil and saw him disqualified from qualifying.
Red Bull want further questions answered about the legality of the wing that failed the FIA’s test.
