    Verstappen hit with 10-SECOND penalty after Hamilton crash at Saudi Arabian GP epic as title race goes down to finale

    MAX VERSTAPPEN has been hit with a 10-second penalty after causing a crash with Lewis Hamilton at the Saudi Arabian GP.The Red Bull ace was handed the time punishment by race stewards on Sunday night after colliding with his Mercedes rival on lap 37.

    However, Verstappen keeps his second-place finish after coming in 16 seconds faster than third-place Valtteri Bottas.
    And it means he remains level with Hamiltonon points going into next weekend’s final race with the title at stake.
    Verstappen, who had already been given a five-second penalty for leaving the track earlier in the race, had been informed he needed to give the lead back to Hamilton following a decision from the stewards.
    But, after touching moments earlier when Hamilton attempted to pass Verstappen, the Dutchman then slowed down to let Hamilton past – but the Brit appeared confused.
    Then when Hamilton drove up behind Verstappen, he hit the back of the Red Bull – an incident the seven-time champion believes was caused by Verstappen brake-testing him.
    Speaking during the race, Hamilton said: “This guy is f***ing crazy, man. It was just dangerous driving dude.”

    Verstappen made his feelings on the incident clear when he stormed off the podium before the champagne bottles had been opened.
    But Hamilton did not hold back when asked about the incident later on.
    He said: “For me I really had to try and keep my cool out there which was really difficult to do.
    “I have raced a lot of drivers through my life in 28 years and I have come across a lot of different characters.
    “There’s a few at the top which are over the limit, rules don’t apply or don’t think of the rules.
    “I just try to do my talking on the track and keep the car between the white lines and do it the right way.
    “There were so many crazy curb walls and then he obviously brake-tested, Ithink to try and get the DRS into the last corner to overtake me again going into turn one.
    “Does Max fall into that category… he is over the limit for sure.
    “I have avoided collisions on so many occasions with the guy and I don’t know in his mind being the one who does that.

    And he narrowly avoided disaster after Verstappen braked suddenly – the pair collided before Hamilton managed to overtake a few laps later.
    The Red Bull man was ordered to let Hamilton pass after he cut across the Mercedes star to avoid being overtaken – once again nearly causing a crash.
    After the race Hamilton said: “For me I really had to try and keep my cool out there which was really difficult to do.

    The major incident came during lap 38.
    Verstappen was told to let Hamilton pass but Race Control failed to inform Mercedes in time.
    Hamilton revealed he was left confused and he did not realise he was being allowed to overtake, so he too slowed before his front wing was clipped, leaving Verstappen to speed off.
    He added: “I did not get the information, it was very very confusing.
    “All of a sudden he started backing up and moving a little bit and I was like ‘is he trying to play some kind of crazy tactic?’ I am not sure.
    “The messages started coming through as he hit the brakes so hard and I nearly went up the complete back up of him. For him it does not matter if he does not finish. For me we both need to finish. It will be interesting to see what happens.
    “I am personally chilled. I feel like I am in a boxing ring, I am ready to go.”
    Verstappen too was unhappy with how events unfolded and he stormed off the podium after surrendering his eight point lead. More

    There is now just one race left with both men equal in the table.
    And a feisty evening saw Verstappen end up colliding with Hamilton on the track during an intense battle for the lead.
    Verstappen was clearly unhappy as he joined Hamilton on the podium after the race had ended.
    As per usual, the top three racers – including Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas – took their place on stage before being handed champagne bottles to spray each other.
    But Verstappen stormed off the podium after receiving his, all the while refusing to make eye contact with Hamilton.
    And the Dutch driver claimed afterwards there were a number of events in the race he ‘didn’t agree with’.

    Verstappen told Sky Sports: “It was quite eventful. A lot of things happened which I don’t fully agree with but it is what it is.
    “I tried on the track to give it all but the tyres weren’t lasting until the end.
    “I think it was good for the end of the stint but I was lacking a bit of rubber at the end. But nevertheless [I was] still second.
    “[For the collision] I slowed down, I wanted to let him [Hamilton] by, I was on the right but he didn’t want to overtake and we touched. 
    “I don’t really understand what happened there. It will be decided [at Abu Dhabi] hopefully we have a good weekend.
    “[On being voted Driver of the Day] Luckily the fans have a clear mind about racing.
    “I’m just trying to race. This sport is more about penalties than racing. I’m pleased the fans enjoyed it and I gave it my all today.”

    But the race, which included two separate red flags for various crashes, was littered with incidents – the most bizarre of which came on lap 37.
    Verstappen, who had already been given a five-second penalty for leaving the track earlier in the race, had been informed he needed to give the lead back to Hamilton following a decision from the stewards.

    When asked about the incident, Verstappen responded: “I slowed down, I wanted to let him by.
    “I was on the right but he didn’t want to overtake and we touched. I don’t really understand what happened there.
    “It will be decided [at Abu Dhabi] hopefully we have a good weekend.”
    Prior to that – when receiving the Driver of the Day accolade after the chequered flag – the 24-year-old said: “Luckily the fans have a clear mind about racing.
    “I’m just trying to race. This sport is more about penalties than racing. I’m pleased the fans enjoyed it and I gave it my all today.”
    Following the incident, Verstappen was called to the stewards for an alleged Breach of Article 2 (d) Chapter IV Appendix L of the FIA International Sporting Code.

    This says: “Causing a collision. Repetition of serious mistakes or the appearance of a lack of control over the car (such as leaving the track) will be reported to the Stewards and may entail the imposition of penalties up to and including the exclusion of any driver concerned.”
    Hamilton and Verstappen have previously collided at the British and Italian Grands Prix.

    The British star won despite CRASHING into the back of Verstappen.
    And the Dutchman twice had to cede a position to the Mercedes driver he had gained illegally.
    However, the most shocking incident occurred when Verstappen was ordered to hand the lead to Hamilton.
    That was due to him holding on to it by forcing the seven-time champion off the track.
    Red Bull were told to hand the lead to Hamilton and Verstappen slowed to do so on the run to the last corner.
    But the Merc driver ran straight into the back of him, causing damage to his front wing – with the drivers both believing the other to be at fault.
    Mercedes chief Wolff watched on furiously before standing up and throwing his headset down in rage, fearing Hamilton’s title comeback was dead in the water.

    Hamilton was then heard saying over the radio: “He just brake tested me!
    “That’s dangerous driving.”
    The incident, which will be investigated by the stewards after the race, could see Verstappen end up in more trouble.
    The race continued with Verstappen still in the lead until he was slapped with a five-second penalty, essentially ending his fight.
    That enabled Hamilton to win, with the two drivers now tied on points heading into the last race of the season.
    Hamilton said afterwards: “That was incredibly tough and I tried to be as tough and sensible as I could out there.
    “I didn’t quite understand why he suddenly hit the brakes quite heavily and then I ran into the back of him. Then he moved on and I didn’t quite understand what was happening.
    “Then I got a message afterwards that he was going to let me pass so it was a bit bemusing.”
    Wolff told Sky Sports: “I don’t think this is done yet. Lewis deserved it, he could’ve been out a few times with a broken wing. That was spectacular, but not good racing.
    “The telemetry shows he [Verstappen] is slowing down, then accelerated, then slowing down again. Lewis did not know [if he was being allowed to move ahead], it’s the wrong sequence of messages.
    “We need to look at the stewards and they look at the telemetry and come to a judgement.
    “It was a degree of frustration and I need to reserve judgement until I’ve seen the race again tomorrow.
    “The driving needs to be assessed and looked at. It is hard, very hard, maybe over the line. We just want to have a clean championship and the best man wins.
    “If it is Max, I’m at peace with that but we need it to be a fair race. Max has more wins so it’s still an advantage.
    “It’s important to have a great, great race at the end of the season, with two fantastic drivers racing each other. It’s going down to the wire and that’s how it should be.” More

    Hamilton wins thrilling Saudi Arabian GP to go LEVEL on points with Verstappen after riveting race as title rivals crash

    LEWIS HAMILTON kept his dream of a record eighth world title alive after victory in this explosive Saudi Arabian GP.As he climbed out of his Mercedes F1 car he did a jig of delight while rival Max Verstappen was left fuming and stormed off the podium.

    The fall-out from this drama-packed race will continue to spark into next week’s title decider in Abu Dhabi.
    Hamilton’s win, plus the bonus point for setting the fastest lap means he and Verstappen are tied in the championship going into the finale – some achievement considering at one point this season he was a whopping 32-points behind the Dutchman.
    It will be their incident on lap 37 which will be the focus the THIRD time they have come together.
    At Silverstone, the high-speed shunt that saw Verstappen taken to hospital was daggers drawn.
    At Monza, when Verstappen landed his Red Bull on it was a case of him drawing first blood.
    However, here in Jeddah if he is deemed to deliberately brake-tested Hamilton he would have firmly plunged the knife in.
    This captivating title is reminiscent of the classic battles. Think Ayrton Senna versus Alain Prost and Michael Schumacher against Damon Hill.
    This season has not only seen two committed racers on track, but it has been laced with allegations of dirty tricks and the actions of F1’s governing body will also come in for heavy criticism.

    Ironically, this 50-lap race started pretty straightforwardly. Hamilton made the perfect start from pole and set about thumping out the laps to extend his lead.
    Hamilton set fastest lap after fastest lap while the obedient Valtteri Bottas did his job as a tailgunner to hold off the threat of Verstappen.
    But this track, self-proclaimed as “the fastest street circuit in the world” with its unforgiving concrete barriers and 27 corners was always going to have some bearing on the result.
    It had played a part already of course, Verstappen’s accident in qualifying denied him a surefire pole position.
    And so it proved on lap 10 when Mick Schumacher thudded into the barriers at speed at turn 22.
    The much-maligned race director, Michael Masi, initially decided to deploy the safety car while Schumacher’s Haas was recovered.
    Masi let’s not forget, works for the FIA – F1’s governing body; the same group of people who took FIVE DAYS to decide not to investigate Verstappen’s controversial defence in Brazil.
    The ones who took an age to penalise Verstappen in Qatar with a five place grid penalty for ignoring double-waved flags.
    However, Hamilton was given a let off for the same offence here in Saudi Arabia, and only picked up a ticking off for blocking Nikita Mazepin.
    Consistency has been missing, and so it proved when Masi then decided to stop the race following Schumacher’s crash.
    His delay in doing so meant that Merc had already pitted Hamilton from the lead and Bottas for hard tyres, promoting Verstappen into the lead.
    The roll of the dice appeared to be a gamble that backfired as the subsequent red flag allowed Verstappen to change his tyres during the break in action.

    Hamilton was furious, insisting the safety barrier was still in tact and that they should have been allowed to carry on.
    “Why is it a red flag? The tyre wall looks fine,” he said. “Find out what the reason for the red flag is.”
    After an 18 minute delay, the race resumed from a standing start and Hamilton made another excellent getaway.
    He passed Verstappen, who was forced wide at turn one but contined over the kerb to hold on to the lead.
    It was a slam dunk offence and he was told to surrender the place but what followed can only be described as a shambles.
    First, the race was stopped for a second time. Masi deployed the red flag after another big shunt involving George Russell, Mazepin and Sergio Perez.
    But then there was the damn right ludicrous situation with Masi offering Red Bull an “offer” of starting in second place on the grid for the restart.
    Red Bull’s Team Manager Jonathan Wheatley submitted a counter-offer that they would accept the second-place on the proviso they were behind Esteban Ocon.
    Masi, getting his maths wrong was then forced to correct his mistake and pointed out that Ocon was now in second, Verstappen would have to line up in third.
    It was like a referee in football doing a deal with a manager over whether it should be a penalty or not.

    And so, to the third restart with Ocon, who had started in ninth place, on pole.
    Hamilton in second and Verstappen in third but on the quicker medium tyres.
    Those tyres played Verstappen’s advantage off the line as his blistering start saw him leapfrog both Ocon and Hamilton into first place.
    Hamilton then moved into second as this incident-packed race finally got into some sort of a rhythm.
    But only temporarily as it again became punctuated by virtual safety cars as debris started dropping from the battle-scared cars.
    And yet there was still time for more drama – and this was the biggest of the lot as Verstappen and Hamilton made contact.
    In the laps before, Verstappen had held off Hamilton at turn one but in his defence ran wide and carried on.
    The stewards told him to surrender his place and he appeared to slow, sending Hamilton into the rear of his Red Bull.
    Livid Hamilton accused Verstappen of brake-testing him and his boss Toto Wolff exploded in a rage in the team’s garage.
    He refused to surrender his lead, triggering the wrath of the stewards again in the form of a five second penalty.

    And so when he did allow Hamilton to pass on lap 42, he then retook P1 in controversial fashion.
    Finally, he did allow Hamilton past, who went on to take the chequered flag for his 103rd and most controversial of victories.
    It means for the first time since 1974 the title has been level going into the final race and as the rockets lit up the Jeddah skies there is a distinct feeling there are more fireworks to come. More

    MICK SCHUMACHER suffered a high-speed crash in the first of TWO red flags at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.And the incident could have HUGE repercussions when it comes to who is going to win the drivers’ championship between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

    Schumacher shunted his car into the barrier by turns 21 and 22, the same place Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc crashed during practice.
    The yellow flag was immediately waved as the safety car came out.
    But a few minutes later that became a red flag – meaning all cars returned to the pits and to await the restart of the race.
    This was bad news for Hamilton as he and teammate Valtteri Bottas had pitted but Verstappen had not.
    As a result, the Red Bull driver was able to change his tyres while the race was paused – meaning he did not have to come in and give up the lead.
    After being made aware of the news, a frustrated Hamilton could not believe the stewards’ decision to red flag the race.

    He said: “Why is there a red flag? The tyre wall looks fine. Find out the reason for the red flag.”
    More drama was to come though as the race resumed from a standing start on the grid.
    Hamilton passed leader Verstappen before the Dutchman went over the curb to regain the lead.
    Esteban Ocon also passed Hamilton, but Verstappen’s move was looked at by the stewards and he was subsequently demoted to third.
    But not before Nikita Mazepin and Sergio Perez crashed out in the middle of the pack and a second red flag was waved.
    All the commotion meant Ocon would restart the race in pole position, with Hamilton second and Verstappen third.

    And the craziness did not end there.
    In the third restart of the race it was Verstappen who dove down the inside to overtake Hamilton and then Ocon to take the lead once more.

    F2 driver Fittipaldi smashes into back of stalled car in huge crash with part of vehicle flying over barrier

    A number of drivers avoided the ART driver but Fittipaldi had already picked up considerable speed and could not avoid the collision.
    Fittipaldi was sent crashing into the barriers with parts of his car flying over the edge of the track before the car came to a halt.
    TV broadcasters have refused to show replays of the crash given its shocking nature.
    The red flag was shown and cars returned to the pits as the debris was cleared and the two drivers received medical attention.
    Both Pourchaire and Fittipaldi were taken to hospital via helicopter but are said to have given a positive hand signal.
    But there is no news on the potential injuries sustained by either driver – just that they are conscious and were taken to King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital in Jeddah.

    The restart was scheduled for 3:45 pm but the race will be shortened to allow the F1 Grand Prix to start at 5:30 pm.
    But the delay means the scheduled minute’s silence for Williams founder Sir Frank Williams – who died this week – will not take place.
    A Williams FW07 was also planned to drive a tribute lap around the track in honour of the F1 great, with images of Williams projected onto the starting grid. More
