F1 expert Martin Brundle ‘saddened’ by Verstappen tactics and warns Hamilton rival he could be labelled ‘unfair driver’

MAX VERSTAPPEN’S legacy is at risk as he could be labelled as an “unfair driver” due to his controversial tactics. That is according to Formula One legend Martin Brundle, who is “saddened” with Verstappen “resorting” to such moves on the track.

The Red Bull star came under fire during a thrilling Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, which rival Lewis Hamilton won and set up a title decider in Abu Dhabi this weekend.
Hamilton narrowly avoided disaster after his opponent braked suddenly when allowing him to retake position.
It saw the pair collide before the Mercedes star managed to overtake a few laps later.
The Dutchman was ordered to let the British hero pass after he cut him up to avoid being overtaken – once again nearly causing a crash.
Brundle told Sky Sports: “He’s been playing the game given that, with his points advantage, Hamilton simply can’t afford to have an accident with him and lose an opportunity to reduce the points deficit.
“Even now despite being absolutely level on points going into the final round, for the first time in F1 since 1974, that remains the case given that he has a 9-8 race victory tally should there be a count-back.

“Such is Max’s car control and cunning he’s sometimes able to pull off the audacious moves and leave a margin of doubt as to whether it’s hard racing or simply a professional foul outside of the regulations.
“And it’s those moments, such as the infamous turn four in Brazil, which are generating the confusion, controversies and inconsistencies.
“I’m in awe of Verstappen’s driving skills and racing nous, and have championed him since the Chinese Grand Prix of 2015 when he was in the Toro Rosso.
“His touch and control behind the wheel is something to behold, but it saddens me that he’s resorting to such tactics, he’s better than that.
“And for all his outwardly carefree attitude it will be such a shame if his legacy is to be labelled as an unfair driver.
“Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher had their faults too, and I was on the receiving end from both of them on occasions, but it’s a sizeable dent on their immense reputations, not a positive.”

That has now set up a one-race winner-takes-all finale in Abu Dhabi this weekend.
Both drivers are level on points going into the last race of the season after nine months of intense action-packed racing.
Hamilton’s victory in Jeddah came after Verstappen was penalised by the stewards.
Once was for cutting a corner and another time for brake-testing Hamilton, as the two made contact for the third time this season.
It was the second one that made the most headlines and left Hamilton’s Mercedes chief Toto Wolff fuming.
Supporters and colleagues from both the Merc and the Red Bull camps have been verbally at war since.

But ahead of the highly-anticipated climax on Sunday, boxing’s WBC world heavyweight champion has now offered his two pence worth.
And he opted to defend the Dutchman rather than stick the boot in to his fellow countryman’s foe.
In a clip posted on Instagram, Fury said: “I’ve just been reading up about the F1 rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen and how Max is being made out to be a bit of a bad boy
“It’s not nice, especially when you are young and ambitious and want to win.
“Give him a bit of a break – he’s only a young lad trying his best.
“Good luck to both men in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.”
He added: “This rivalry reminds me a bit of James Hunt and Niki Lauda racing for the title.

‘He’ll do anything to win’ – Max Verstappen’s dad says son will thrive on pressure of F1 title race with Lewis Hamilton

MAX VERSTAPPEN will “do everything” to beat Lewis Hamilton in this weekend’s Formula One title decider in Abu Dhabi. That is according to Verstappen’s father Jos, who is a former F1 driver himself and believes his son will leave it all out on the track as his rivalry with Hamilton reaches its intense conclusion.

The Dutchman, however, doesn’t expect a crash to occur, even though a collision that renders both drivers unable to finish the race would lead to Max’s first world championship.
Jos told the Mail: “I don’t think that [a crash] will happen.
“Max absolutely wants to win. He will definitely go for it.
“He will clearly try to beat him. He will do everything to get the win, that’s for sure. It will be exciting.”
Alain Prost can’t rule out a potential crash in Abu Dhabi as Max and Hamilton’s rivalry has reached peak levels.
Prost knows all about tactical and dangerous driving at the F1 season’s climax.

Hamilton is currently focused on trying to win a fifth straight F1 drivers’ championship as he prepares for the final race of the season.
Incredibly, the Brit is LEVEL on points with title rival Max Verstappen heading into a winner-takes-all finale in Abu Dhabi.
The title looked to be slipping away from Hamilton earlier in the season as Mercedes failed to live with Red Bull’s blistering pace.
But the defending champion has clawed his way back into it with three back-to-back victories in Brazil, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
He is now the odds-on favourite to claim a record-breaking eighth championship.
If he is to win the title this Sunday in the Middle East, Hamilton will move clear of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher.

The Stevenage-born racer first became world champion in 2008 while driving for McLaren.
He then won another two championships in 2014 and 2015 before Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg pipped him to the 2016 crown.
But since then Hamilton has clinched the last four titles and is gunning for a fifth successive triumph this Sunday. More

Aston Martin F1 team showered with TOILET WATER after leak in garage ceiling at incredible Saudi Arabian GP

Staff were subject to plenty of jokes and sniggering from rival teams but there was no suggestion of foul play amid the toilet humour.
Aston drivers Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll had an equally s****y qualifying as they finished in 17th and 18th respectively.
Canadian Stroll did well to battle to 11th in Sunday’s final race while German Vettel moved up just one spot to finish 16th.
But the main focus of the day was on the furious battle for the championship between British legend Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Mercedes ace Hamilton won Sunday’s thriller to go level on points with Verstappen and set up a title decider in the final race in Abu Dhabi.
Hamilton narrowly avoided disaster after his Red Bull foe braked suddenly when allowing him to retake position.

It saw the pair collide before the Mercedes driver managed to overtake a few laps later.
The Dutchman was ordered to let Hamilton pass after he cut him up to avoid being overtaken – once again nearly causing a crash.
And the Brit took aim at his bitter rival after the chequered flag.
Hamilton said: “I don’t think I’ve changed the way I race. I think we’re seeing multiple incidents this year.
“Even with Brazil we’re supposed to do our racing on track in between the white lines and the rules haven’t been clear from the stewards, that those things have been allowed, so that’s continued.
“From my understanding, I know I can’t overtake someone and go off track and then keep the position.
“But I think that’s well known between all us drivers but it doesn’t apply to one of us, I guess.”
‘I HAD TO TRY TO KEEP MY COOL’
Hamilton also suggested Verstappen is among the Formula One stars that drives over the limit.
He added: “For me I really had to try and keep my cool out there which was really difficult to do.
“I have raced a lot of drivers through my life in 28 years and I have come across a lot of different characters.
“There’s a few at the top which are over the limit, rules don’t apply or don’t think of the rules.
“I just try to do my talking on the track and keep the car between the white lines and do it the right way.
“There were so many crazy curb walls and then he obviously brake tested I think to try and get the DRS into the last corner to overtake me again going into turn one.

“Does Max fall into that category…He is over the limit for sure.
“I have avoided collisions on so many occasions with the guy and I don’t know in his mind being the one who does that.

THERE simply is no bigger finish than this – with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen slugging out a battle for the ages in a bid win the F1 crown. The pair have been locked in a stunning tussle all 2021 season for the crown of world champion.

There was no love lost last weekend at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, where the pair were involved in ANOTHER collision, as the Dutchman was forced to let the Brit overtake him.
But they finished in first and second spot in Jeddah, meaning they are incredibly on exactly the same points total of 369.5 points.
There is even an unlikely scenario where Hamilton and Verstappen could finish the season on the same points total – and that would result in the Dutchman clinching world championship victory.
Hamilton is within touching distance of immortality, a victory for him this weekend would take him one world title ahead of Michael Schumacher’s magic mark of seven drivers’ championships.

‘A straight-out fight’ – Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton battling like gladiators in F1 title race for ages

MAX VERSTAPPEN has been labelled “a gladiator” by Red Bull boss Christian Horner who says it is now his driver’s time to rule the F1 Empire.Verstappen, 24, clashed with Lewis Hamilton in the sensational Saudi Arabian GP on Sunday to set up a one-race winner-takes-all finale in Abu Dhabi this weekend.

After nine months of wheel-to-wheel racing and 22 races across the globe, both drivers are level on points going into the last race of the season.
Hamilton’s victory in Jeddah came after Verstappen was penalised by the stewards – once for cutting a corner and another time for brake-testing Hamilton, as the two made contact for the third time this season.
With both drivers at war, along with their respective teams, it is all poised to be a duel to the end.
Horner said: “Max has fought like a gladiator [last] weekend and given it everything, so we now have one chance.
“We have a week to regroup and now it goes down to the wire at Abu Dhabi.
“It’s a straight-out fight as it has been for the entire year. For the fans it is fantastic, it keeps the championship dream alive and we have one shot and it’s time to take it.”
Red Bull advisor, Helmut Marko also said the team had no reason to tell Verstappen to change his driving style.
He added: “I don’t think there is any reason why he should cool down. It’s the match between Mercedes and Red Bull, and the match between Max and [Lewis].”

Verstappen has nine wins this season while Hamilton has eight. F1’s rules mean that should both drivers fail to finish, Verstappen would be crowned champion due to having more victories.
It is the first time the championship has been tied going into the final race of the season since 1974.
Back then, Emerson Fittipaldi won the title after rival Clay Regazzoni had mechanical problems.
However, F1 has a rich history of drivers acting at all costs to make sure they secure the title.
Damon Hill was the victim of one such incident in 1994 when he was taken out in the final race of the season by Michael Schumacher, who as a result won the title.
And then, and perhaps a most relevant example, in 1997 when Schumacher was disqualified from the whole season after crashing into Jacques Villeneuve.
Schumacher, who was leading the championship by a single point at the race in Jerez in Spain, collided with the Canadian for the lead.
The German was subsequently stripped of all his points for the season for what was seen as an attempt to deliberately take out his title rival.
Villeneuve, who finished third in the race, was champion and Hill says that F1’s governing body should remind both drivers to keep it clean.
He said: “There is a precedent that was set in the championship in 1997 where Schumacher’s points were taken away from him.
“So if we do have a (collision) situation, I think the FIA should make the teams and drivers know in advance what they are likely to do. Will they take points away? What’s the penalty?
“There are some people who drive with absolutely no compromises whatsoever. And I think Max is one of those people.
“He’s very skillful and he’s brilliant and it’s exciting to watch. I think Lewis, who has to deal with that, is now very cautious – he’s not intimidated but he’s very wary of Max and probably rightly so.
“Max is pushing everything to the limit,” said Hill. “It’s for the world title, and both guys want it massively and there’s always going to be tears.”
Merc boss Toto Wolff also urged for calmness in the final race after the explosive race in Jeddah and subsequent fall out.
He said: “I would hope that this race has enough repercussions that everybody is going to learn from it and adapt for the final race.
“I think that similar driving, if it were to be deemed by the stewards as being over the line, would also be penalised in Abu Dhabi.
“And that could end up in a messy situation for everybody and I don’t think the championship has deserved a result that was influenced by a collision.” More

Seven key moments of Saudi Arabian GP from red flag chaos to Verstappen and Hamilton crash leading to last-race showdown

THE Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was one of the most memorable in recent history.Jeddah certainly lived up to the hype. Fans saw two red flags, crashes, near misses and time penalties.

Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton ultimately came out on top, edging out title rival Max Verstappen.
The Brit’s win draws him level on points with the Dutchman with just Abu Dhabi to go.
There are two scenarios which could see the pair end the season level on points, albeit unlikely. Although if they did, Verstappen would win the title by virtue of more race wins over the season.
Whatever happens this coming weekend, fans will see an out-right winner.
But what seven key moments in Saudi set up the title-decider?

    Taking the Mick
Mick Schumacher was the first to drop out of the Saudi GP after he spun out and hit the Turn 23 barriers.
The Safety Car turned into a red flag shortly after, handing Verstappen the opportunity to change his tyres during the break.
Hamilton, on the other hand, stopped under the yellow flags to change tyres with the move backfiring as it saw him give up his lead and go second.

From the restart, Hamilton got back in the lead but was then cut off by Verstappen who ran off the track at the first chicane.
It saw the Brit to drop down to third behind Esteban Ocon.
However, a red flag stopped the race again after Sergio Perez, Charles Leclerc, Nikita Mazepin and George Russell were involved in an incident.

After some bargaining, Mercedes and Red Bull came to the agreement that Hamilton would restart in P2 and Verstappen in P3, behind Alpine’s Ocon.
Verstappen made an unbelievable move up the inside of the first Chicane to take the lead, sandwiching Hamilton in between the Alpine.
The calculated but risky move paid off for the 24-year-old.

    DRS range
After three Virtual Saftey Cars between Laps 28 to 36, Hamilton got within range of Verstappen to make use of his DRS.
Verstappen braked late at the end of the main straight, running wide, but retaining the lead.

    Are Lew kidding me?
Verstappen’s late braking saw him be forced to give up P1 to his title rival in Lap 37.
Some confusion over Verstappen giving up the place saw Hamilton clip the back of the Red Bull car, causing minor damage to his front wing.
A move Hamilton wasn’t too happy with.

    Second time lucky?
Hamilton tried to get past Verstappen again in Lap 42, but was again met with a feisty defence.
Verstappen pushed him wide to keep his place.
The Dutchman was later punished with a five-second time penalty for that.

    You snooze, Lew lose
Hamilton finally got a clean pass on the Red Bull driver in Lap 43 on Turn 27.
The title-chasing Brit also put in the fastest lap of the race, despite finishing with a damaged wing.
Ocon – who benefitted from the earlier red flag allowing a change of tyres – was pipped on the line by Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas, completing a Mercedes first and third-placed finish.
Hamilton took 26 points to Verstappen’s 18, tying up the title race at 369.5 points each.

Stewards later investigated the collision between the pair after the race and slapped Verstappen with an additional ten-second penalty.
Mercedes celebrated on the podium with Hamilton’s dreams of an eighth F1 crown still alive, as well as all-but tying up the constructors’ championship.
Verstappen, far from pleased, refused to stay and spray champagne, and instead stormed off stage and left the Merc three to drench each other.
