      Lewis Hamilton slams F1 chiefs for ‘manipulating’ F1 title showdown with Max Verstappen after controversial Abu Dhabi GP

      LEWIS HAMILTON has been heard labelling Max Verstappen’s dramatic Abu Dhabi GP win as ‘manipulated’ in a largely unaired radio message. Hamilton lost to Verstappen in heartbreaking fashion, seeing the Dutchman controversially pull in front of him with just one lap left to race.

      And the Telegraph report that the Brit said down the radio to his Mercedes team with four corners left to race: “This has been manipulated, man.”
      Although there are now suggestions that Mercedes will decide not to appeal against the outcome of yesterday’s race, with two protests already being rejected.
      Hamilton’s comments were heard through his onboard channel on F1 TV, but not relayed onto the world feed.
      His words seem to prove his true feelings towards the events that unfolded at Yas Marina.
      Fellow Brit Lando Norris also felt that there were other motivating factors behind the result.
      He said: “It was obviously made to be a fight, it was for the TV of course, it was for the result. Whether or not it was fair is not up to me to decide.”

      In the immediate aftermath of the race Hamilton was seen graciously congratulating Verstappen for his last-gasp victory.
      Just moments after being beaten, Hamilton said: “Firstly, congratulations to Max and to his team.
      “I think we did an amazing job this year. My team, everyone back at the factory, have worked so hard this whole year, it’s been the most difficult of seasons.
      “I’m so proud of them and I’m so grateful to be a part of the journey with them. This last part of the season we gave it absolutely everything and never gave up.”
      Lewis Hamilton’s father, Anthony, was also praised for the way he congratulated Verstappen and his dad, Jos, after the race.
      Hamilton seemed to be cruising towards victory until the safety car was called onto the track with five laps left to race after Nicholas Latifi’s crash.
      That cued the barely believable action to unfold, as race stewards allowed five cars in between Hamilton and Verstappen to pass the Brit and unlap themselves.
      Verstappen then used his fresher tyres to edge ahead, although replays looked like he had done so before the safety car had left the track. More

      Mercedes superstar Lewis Hamilton had built a comfortable lead at the front of the pack but saw that cut after the safety car was deployed.
      And a call from the stewards to let a handful of lapped cars past before removing the safety car allowed Hamilton’s title rival Max Verstappen to pip him on the final lap.
      A regretful Latifi said: “We were just really struggling for grip through the next sequence of corners, and especially where I ended up going off.
      “It’s been a tricky corner all weekend for me, so dirty tyres, dirty air and I made a mistake.
      “I wasn’t aware of the situation of the race up until then. Obviously it was never my intention to inadvertently influence that, but I made a mistake and ruined my own race.”

      Red Bull’s Max Verstappen dramatically overtook Mercedes star Hamilton on the final lap of the season to claim his first drivers’ championship.
      But Merc did enough as a team to snatch the constructors’ title from Red Bull’s grasp, meaning a bumper payday for Silver Arrows staff.
      Hamilton himself had been in line for a mammoth £4million payout if he had lifted an unprecedented eighth drivers’ crown.

      MAX VERSTAPPEN’S anxious mum asked him about Mercedes’ appeals when she spoke to the driver on the phone following his F1 win.Verstappen snatched the F1 world title from Lewis Hamilton following a dramatic overtake with just one lap left of the Abu Dhabi GP.

      But the Dutchman had to survive TWO appeals from Mercedes, who fought a four-hour battle to have the result overturned.
      And a nervous Sophie Kumpen spoke to her son in the meantime, questioning what the decision would be.
      She said, as reported by HLN: “What do you think they are going to do with that complaint …?”
      The 46-year-old was also asked by her son how many worried trips to the toilet she had to make while Verstappen was on the track.
      She said: “He asked how often I went to the toilet during the race.
      “Oh well, it’s nice to get him on the phone, of course you want to grab him, but I’m glad I heard him already.”

      Hamilton seemed to be cruising towards victory until the safety car was called onto the track with five laps left to race after Nicholas Latifi’s crash.
      That cued the barely believable action to unfold, as race stewards allowed five cars in between Hamilton and Verstappen to pass the Brit and unlap themselves.
      Verstappen then used his fresher tyres to edge ahead, although replays looked like he had done so before the safety car had left the track.
      Protests on both counts were eventually rejected, although Mercedes intend to appeal against the decision.
      And Verstappen’s mum also revealed that Hamilton was in fact the better performer on the day.
      Kumpen told Dutch newspaper AD: “Let’s face it, Hamilton was stronger today.
      “It didn’t look too good until the end, but then my daughter texted me – ‘Safety car! Call on the angels’. And behold, they helped me.

      Verstappen went on to win that race – his first Monaco win – and the Dutchman is said to have been ‘inseparable’ from the timepiece ever since.
      It certainly seemed to bring him luck on Sunday, with the Red Bull superstar clinching his first ever world title after overtaking rival Lewis Hamilton on the last lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
      The watch in question is The TAG Heuer Monaco Titan Special Edition.
      Originally created in 1969, the watch was worn by Steve McQueen in the 1971 film Le Mans.
      Incredibly, one of the versions the legendary actor wore in that movie sold at auction for over $2million.
      Verstappen’s version has a titanium case while the chronograph is ultra-light and incredibly strong.

      And former Spice Girl Geri was by Horner’s side for the crowning moment of his career with Red Bull.
      The duo thought that hope was lost, when Lewis Hamilton led their man Verstappen with just six laps remaining in Abu Dhabi.
      But after Nicholas Latifi’s crash and an extremely contentious call by the FIA, Verstappen was able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
      Geri, 49, shared a hug with hubby Christian as the pair took a selfie together to celebrate the win.
      And she also grabbed a picture with man of the moment Verstappen.
      Fans were left baffled, however, when she was then interviewed about the Dutchman’s triumph by Sky Sports.
