George Russell admits Mercedes ‘not happy’ with new car and fears McLaren and Ferrari speed despite Hamilton fastest lap

GEORGE RUSSELL is UNHAPPY with Mercedes’ new car and is concerned about the limitations on speed.Lewis Hamilton recorded the fastest lap around Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya during three days of testing with Russell second, but he does not think that is a true reflection of the car’s performance because of the tyres used.

The Brit, who is embarking on his debut season with Mercedes, also thinks rivals Ferrari and McLaren are looking impressive, despite the latter coming in at 10th and 11th on the timesheet.
Russell told Sky Sports: “Lap time wise I don’t think is representative at all.
“We were on the softest compound of tyres, and the C5 is a very strong tyre around this track, so even though we were on the top of the timesheet I wouldn’t read too much into it.
“I think the McLaren and the Ferrari are looking incredibly strong and I think we’ve got some improvements to be made, as we’re not fully happy with the balance of the car and the limitations we have currently.”
The Mercedes pair finished top of the standings and the only other driver who used C5 tyres, Aston Martin’s Sebastien Vettel, finished fifth.
That suggests Mercedes were boosted by their choice of tyre with Red Bull not far behind in third and fourth place.

In fact, world champion Max Verstappen finished narrowly behind the Mercedes duo in fourth place yet used medium tyres – a hint that Red Bull’s car may be performing better overall.
There is also cause for optimism for both McLaren and Ferrari – both teams completed more than 100 laps which suggests there are not any reliability issues with their respective cars.
The official testing at Bahrain next month will provide a better indication of the shape the new cars are in, with the three days in Barcelona seen as more of a ‘shakedown’.

Christian Horner confirms Michael Masi received death threats over Hamilton-Verstappen title chaos as he slams F1 chiefs

CHRISTIAN HORNER revealed Michael Masi and his family received death threats after he was accused of robbing Lewis Hamilton of his record-breaking eighth championship. The Red Bull boss slammed Formula One for hanging the former race director out to dry.

Horner said: “The lack of support that was shown to Michael was disappointing, especially at a time when mental health is so prevalent.
“To hear that his family and he received death threats is not right.
“An awful lot of pressure was put on the FIA to deal with him.
“And I made it clear in last week’s meeting in London that there should have been more support for him. I was disappointed that nobody shared that opinion.
“I have had an exchange with Michael to wish him well. But the whole experience was very, very tough for him.”
Horner’s comments come one day after defending champion Max Verstappen said Masi was thrown under the bus.

Masi and his family were targeted after his controversial handling of the season-defining race in Abu Dhabi.
Horner believes Verstappen’s first title hasn’t been tarnished by the controversy in Abu Dhabi.
He said: “In the UK media a lot has been made of it because Lewis is obviously a British driver, but I really don’t think so.
“Max was the outstanding driver last year. He had bad luck and things didn’t always go his way, too.
“It is too easy to get hung up on one event, and so much has been written about the safety car in Abu Dhabi.
Hamilton was always going to be exposed at a restartChristian Horner
“But, again, tactically as a team we made the right choices. Mercedes left Lewis out on a 44-lap old set of tyres and he was always going to be exposed at a restart.
“There was no gift for Max either. Lewis didn’t expect him to overtake where he did.
“When Max threw it down the inside into the hairpin, you could see it caught Lewis completely unawares. He left the door open.”
Meanwhile, Formula One chiefs have SCRAPPED the Russian Grand Prix.
The sport was under immense pressure to strip the race from their calendar after Russia invaded Ukraine.
The race was set to take place at the Sochi Autodrom on September 25. More

F1 driver Nikita Mazepin fighting for future in sport after Haas team scrap Russian sponsor and colours from car

RUSSIAN F1 driver Nikita Mazepin is fighting for his position in the sport. The Haas driver’s future ‘needs to be resolved’, according to team principal Guenther Steiner.

Steiner admitted: “It needs to be resolved. Not everything depends on us here, with what is happening, there are governments involved.
“We need to see how the situation develops in Ukraine.”
American team Haas dropped their Russian title-sponsor Uralkali for the final day of testing in Barcelona.
They tore the company’s logo off their motorhomes and trucks while also ditching their Russian-flag inspired livery for an all-white car.
Uralkali is a Russian chemical company which is owned by Dmitry Mazepin, the father of Nikita.
Dimitry met with Putin last month to discuss matters regarding Uralkali.

F1 today announced the decision to strip Russia from holding the Sochi Grand Prix due to the ongoing invasion in Ukraine.
Chiefs said it’s ‘impossible’ to race in Russia after the state’s actions in recent days.
But they did not fully close the door on Russia, hinting the race could go ahead if circumstances change.
The race was set to take place at the Sochi Autodrom on September 25.
An official F1 statement read: The FIA Formula 1 World Championship visits countries all over the world with a positive vision to unite people, bringing nations together.
“We are watching the developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock and hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the present situation.
“On Thursday evening Formula 1, the FIA, and the teams discussed the position of our sport, and the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances.” More

Max Verstappen ‘to sign new Red Bull contract worth £22m a year’ with F1 champ still earning HALF Lewis Hamilton’s pay

According to the Daily Mail, Red Bull have thus decided to tie the Dutch star down to a new long-term contract worth £22million per year.
Confirmation of the agreement is expected to take place in the next few weeks.
However, that means he will still be making almost half of the £40m Hamilton earns.
Verstappen’s new salary will see him earn £4m more than his current deal, which is set to expire in 2023.
The 24-year-old has been readying his title defence at F1’s pre-season testing in Barcelona.

The Dutchman recently addressed last season’s controversial ending by stating it was “very unfair” to sack Michael Masi as race director.
Masi infuriated Hamilton and Mercedes for taking back his decision that lapped cars would not be able to unlap themselves following Nicholas Latifi’s crash in Abu Dhabi.
That led to the Red Bull star successfully passing the 37-year-old Englishman on the final lap on fresh tyres to win the race and the championship.
Verstappen told Autosport: “For me, it’s very unfair what happened to Michael – he was really being thrown under the bus.
‘Now, [that they] did sack him like that in the first place for me is unacceptable.
“And now basically [that they] sacked him is really incredible. I feel really sorry for Michael.” More

Uefa chiefs have decided to move the showpiece event scheduled for May 28 to Paris due to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
The Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg had originally been meant to host the final, which will now be played at the Stade de France.
Elsewhere, Haas have ditched their Russian title sponsor for the final day of testing in Barcelona.

The American owned team also scrapped their Russian-flag inspired livery for an all-white car for the final session.
The team have also ripped the branding of the company, Uralkali, off all of their motorhomes and trucks.
Uralkali is a Russian chemical company, owned by Dmitry Mazepin, the father of Haas driver Nikita Mazepin.

Alpine confirmed that Alonso had stopped the car ‘due to a loss of pressure’.
It came after the star had taken a trip through the gravel in his new F1 challenger.
Alpine mechanics now face a race against the clock to repair the car and get it back out in the dry before this afternoon when the track will be artificially dampened.
The incident marks the third red flag this week after Red Bull’s Sergio Perez’s gearbox failed and Haas driver Nikita Mazepin’s fuel pump suffered a problem on Thursday.
It has been an action-packed week in Barcelona after cheeky Lewis Hamilton went on a spy mission peering into Red Bull’s garage on the first day of pre-season testing.
The seven-time British world champion was spotted in the pit-lane examining Red Bull’s car for the 2022 season.

Hamilton was eager to scope out the competition and get a glimpse of the RB18 at the first opportunity at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
He also took a look at most of the other teams during his stroll following the biggest overhaul of F1 regulations in a generation.
After contemplating retiring from the sport, Hamilton is back with his eyes set on eclipsing Michael Schumacher’s record by winning his eighth world title.
But when asked if he fears Mercedes may not provide him with a car worthy of challenging for another title, Hamilton responded: “Why would I ever feel that way?
    “My team don’t make mistakes.
“Of course that is a risk (with the new regulations) but I trust the team. Whether it is good or bad we will work through it.”
The Brit is hungry to for success again after cruelly having the title snatched from him on the last lap in Abu Dhabi last season.
The FIA controversially cleared the cars between Hamilton and Verstappen under a safety car, allowing the Dutchman to have a clear run on Hamilton with fresh tyres to clinch his first championship.
This dramatic Grand Prix led to a social media blackout from Hamilton for over two months, which led to questions regarding whether or not he would walk away from the sport.
But Hamilton ended silence with the message: “I’ve Been Gone. Now I’m Back!”
