Early signs look promising for Mercedes after Hamilton and new driver George Russell posted the fastest two laps in Barcelona at the end of last month.
But Russell does have some concerns over the new car and puts his fast time down to the soft tyres he used in Spain.
Red Bull also looked strong in the first stage of testing but Bahrain should provide a better indication of how the teams match up heading into the season.
The first Grand Prix of the season in Bahrain is a little over a week away but both Hamilton and Verstappen looked cool and composed.

He declared: “If you think what you saw at the end of last year was my best, wait until you see this year.”
Hamilton finished the stronger out of the two in the last campaign despite losing in Abu Dhabi.
The Brit won three of the last four races and would have claimed victory at Yas Marina had disgraced race director Michael Masi not broken his own safety rules.

Hamilton is probably not over that fiasco, which will be relived on Netflix’s Drive to Survive series when it airs on Friday.
Former F1 star Anthony Davidson believes a ‘hurt’ Hamilton is ready to bounce back after hearing his warning to Verstappen.
Davidson said: “When Lewis Hamilton comes out with a sentence like that, you have to take notice.

“He sure is fired up to win this thing once and for all and I think he’ll be hard to beat.
“He’s certainly coming into this season with a very bullish mentality.
“There will be nothing more than Lewis wants from this season than to destroy Max Verstappen.
“Let’s not beat around a bush, he feels absolutely robbed as to what happened last year in Abu Dhabi, he wants to come out with a dominant car and he doesn’t even want to see Max on track, I’m sure.”

Russian F1 driver Nikita Mazepin and dad Dmitry WILL be sanctioned due to Vladimir Putin ties amid Ukraine war

NIKITA MAZEPIN and his father Dmitry have been hit by EU sanctions on Russian oligarchs in the wake of the country’s invasion of Ukraine. Dmitry reportedly met with Russian president Vladimir Putin on February 24 to “Discuss the impact of the course of action in the wake of Western sanction.”

Nikita was sacked by F1 team Haas last week with his father having close ties to Putin.
And now the EU have announced sanctions on a number of Russian oligarchs in the wake of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
An EU statement said: “Mazepin, along with other 36 business people, met with President Vladimir Putin and other members of the Russian government to discuss the impact of the course of action in the wake of Western sanctions.
“The fact that he was invited to attend this meeting shows that he is a member of the closest circle of Vladimir Putin and that he is supporting or implementing actions or policies which undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, as well as stability and security in Ukraine.”
Dmitry’s meeting with Putin came on the same day F1 team Haas removed Russian sponsor Uralkali and ditched their Russian inspired livery from their vehicles at pre-season testing in Barcelona.
Uralkali is a Russian chemical company, owned by Dmitry.

Since then they’ve announced Nikita would no longer be racing for them, and also confirmed they would be ending their partnership with Uralkali.
And now Kevin Magnussen has rejoined the team as a replacement for the axed Nikita.
The Dane, previously raced for Haas between 2017 and 2020 before being replaced.
But the 29-year-old has been drafted in and will take part in the second test in Bahrain this weekend ahead of the first race of the season on March 20th.
Team Principal Guenther Steiner said: “I’m delighted to welcome Kevin Magnussen back to Haas F1 Team.
“When looking for a driver who could bring value to the team, not to mention a wealth of Formula One experience, Kevin was a straightforward decision for us.”

He added: “Kevin was a key component in our previous successes – not least when we both scored our best finishes in Formula One back in 2018.
“He continued to show last year that he’s an elite race car driver adding wins and podiums to his resume.
“As a veteran presence in both the garage and the engineering room, he’ll provide a solid benchmark for us with the on-going development of the VF-22. We’re all looking forward to welcoming Kevin back this week in Bahrain.”
Magnussen, who has also had stints at McLaren and Renault, was poised to continue to racing in the USA.
He said: “I was very surprised but equally very excited to receive the call from Haas F1 Team.
“I was looking in a different direction regarding my commitments for 2022 but the opportunity to return to compete in Formula One, and with a team I know extremely well, was simply too appealing.” More

‘He has not had to build anything’ – Christian Horner aims dig at Toto Wolff over Lewis Hamilton Mercedes success

Tensions continue to bubble between the two chiefs as the 2022 season approaches.
They have had a lot to say about each other in the new series of the Netflix hit ‘Drive to Survive’.
Horner was first to take aim as he suggested that the Mercedes boss ‘inherited’ his successful team when he was appointed in 2013.
He said: “What you have to remember about Toto is he has inherited something that is already well-oiled.
“He has not had to build anything. He operates the team in a much different way to me.
“He is much more motivated by the financials of F1 than perhaps the competition.”

In a separate interview, Horner’s comments were put to Wolff, and the 50-year-old German responded by saying: “I don’t care what others are doing.
“It’s about optimising my contribution in the team without looking elsewhere.”
Series four of ‘Drive to Survive’ follows the action-packed 2021 season.
Fans will have the chance to relive the fierce rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen that concluded with a controversial finale in Abu Dhabi.
Verstappen secured his first Drivers Championship title after pipping Hamilton to the finish line on the final lap of the race.
The outcome caused mass outrage across the world, with Hamilton himself claiming that the race had been ‘manipulated’.
However, the Mercedes man is eager to reclaim the title this year and has already declared: “If you think what you saw at the end of last year was my best, wait until you see this year.” More

Nikita Mazepin lashes out at Haas team with Russian claiming he learnt of sacking at same time as everyone else

NIKITA MAZEPIN has lashed out at the Haas F1 team and claimed they showed him no support during his sacking. The 23-year-old Russian says he only discovered he was axed via the team’s press release and has not even spoken to team boss, Guenther Steiner.

Mazepin, whose father Dimitry is a close friend to Vladimir Putin, was given the boot following Russia’s war with Ukraine and subsequent sanctions put on the country and it’s athletes.
Mazepin has been prevented from racing in the British GP by Motorsport UK, while the FIA said Russian racers would be forced to compete under a neutral flag.
Mazepin said: “I learned about the firing the same time as it had been released to the press. I’m a young man at 23, and I was not ready for it.
“I did not receive any hint, or any support to say ‘you know, this is the decision we’ve taken, it’s going to go live in 15 minutes, just be ready for it’.
“I had a lot of messages from people, and I just learned at the same time as everyone did.
“I haven’t spoken to Guenther since I left Barcelona on the third day of testing.

“Guenther gave me no information about what decision the team is going to take, aside from the information that he has been giving my manager up to March 4.
“And then the press release came, I read it and found out that my contract had been terminated. But I did not speak to him personally.”
Haas, who were sponsored by Mazepin’s father’s chemical company, also removed the logos from their F1 car during testing in Barcelona in February.
And now the Russian company wants their money back from Haas, which Mazepin will use to start a fund for other athletes who are prevented from competing due to being banned while Russia remains at war.
WAS WILLING TO COMPETE AS NEUTRAL
And while he would not speak about his support for Putin or the war, Mazepin hinted he was willing to go along with the FIA’s stipulation to remain neutral.
He added: “I have been aiming and planning to compete as a neutral.
“This was firstly allowed by the FIA, the decision that they took, and I without any issues was happy to agree to that decision.
“However, the night before my contract was terminated, there was an additional letter which was made [by the FIA].
“By the time that we were processing that letter and looking at options, because there were a lot of clauses in it, the next morning early on I received the termination of my contract.
“There was no time to even say ‘yes’ to [the second letter], I have just been fired.”
He has now put himself on collision course with F1 by curiously naming his fund “We Compete As One” – almost identical to F1’s “We Race As One” anti-racism and inclusivity message. More

Lewis Hamilton feels ‘robbed’ and wants to ‘destroy’ Max Verstappen in F1 title race this season after Abu Dhabi drama

Lewis Hamilton trumps his rival Max Verstappen in almost every category
But race director Michael Masi ripped up the rulebook surrounding safety cars to set up a final-lap showdown between title rivals Hamilton and Verstappen.
The Dutchman was on brand new soft tyres and overtook the reigning champ to claim his maiden crown in controversial fashion.
But after a winter of speculation surrounding his future, Hamilton is preparing for a fresh bid at history.
And the Mercedes man has already fired a warning shot to Verstappen and Red Bull.
He declared: “If you think what you saw at the end of last year was my best, wait until you see this year.”
Former F1 star Anthony Davidson, who raced 24 times and is a simulator driver for Mercedes, believes that was a powerful statement of intent from hurting Hamilton – and is backing him to bounce back in style this year.

Davidson told Sky Sports: “When Lewis Hamilton comes out with a sentence like that, you have to take notice.
“He sure is fired up to win this thing once and for all and I think he’ll be hard to beat.
“He’s certainly coming into this season with a very bullish mentality.
“There will be nothing more than Lewis wants from this season than to destroy Max Verstappen.
“Let’s not beat around a bush, he feels absolutely robbed as to what happened last year in Abu Dhabi, he wants to come out with a dominant car and he doesn’t even want to see Max on track, I’m sure.
“He just wants to show him a clean pair of heels, disappear off into the distance and win his eighth world championship.”
Verstappen goes into his title defence on the back of signing a fresh £37million-a-year contract with Red Bull.
And he will be desperate to get the new 2022 campaign off to a flying start by claiming the chequered flag at the first race – in Bahrain on March 20. More

Ferrari finished third in the constructors’ championship last season, 48.5 points ahead of their nearest rivals McLaren.
Sainz managed four podiums including second at the Monaco Grand Prix – handing him fifth in the drivers’ championship at the end of the season.
But it was a more disappointing campaign for the highly-rated Leclerc.
He managed just one podium – second at the British GP – and ended the 2021 campaign down in seventh behind McLaren driver Lando Norris.
The first F1 race of the 2022 season is scheduled for March 20 in Bahrain.

Drive to Survive first look suggests it will be a hit with fans – but F1’s luck with Netflix could be about to turn

IF YOU are going to gamble then surely there is no better place to do it than Las Vegas? That seems to be the case with Formula One, where it is a safe bet they will confirm that a race in Sin City will join the calendar, potentially as early as next year.

Interest in the sport has rocketed Stateside for the first time in F1’s 72-year history.
Last year’s US Grand Prix, which was held in Austin, Texas, enjoyed a bumper 400,000 crowd.
This year sees the introduction of a second race in the US — the Miami Grand Prix — on May 8.
The track is still being built but the event is already sold out. McLaren’s American CEO said at the start of the year this race will be “the hottest ticket of the year”.
To add a THIRD race in the USA seems a safe bet but it also marks somewhat of a gamble for F1’s American owners, Liberty Media.
The popularity of F1 in America is no doubt thanks to the success of the Netflix show Drive to Survive.

Season four launches this Friday and, interestingly, Pierre Gasly was the only current driver to turn up to the screening in London as the invitations had been sent out too late.
Another noticeable absentee was F1’s CEO, Stefano Domenicali, who was making a personal check on the developments in Vegas.
Having seen the first two episodes, the fly-on-the-wall documentary will again be a hit.
Yet there are signs F1’s luck with Netflix could be about to turn.
F1 insiders tell me they are getting a little frustrated by the splicing of footage to create rivalries which are not there.
In the first two instalments, Red Bull’s Christian Horner plays the villain and one wonders how long he will be willing to continue to act up to that — especially in an age when social media is so unforgiving.
And what about Lando Norris? In some scenes, the likeable Brit is seen uttering Daniel Ricciardo’s “Let’s f*** s*** up” catchphrase in a scene which is interlinked with the Aussie’s struggles on track.
Worth also remembering that a key figure in this season’s show, Max Verstappen, did not want to take part as he felt it was all “fake”.
It seems plausible that other drivers could follow suit and decide to fold.
If so, Netflix could be left with a rather poor hand to pick from and one wonders how that would impact American interest — and attendances at the three races — when the bubble bursts. More
