      We won’t be competing’ – Lewis Hamilton fears Mercedes car is too SLOW to dethrone rival Max Verstappen of F1 title

      LEWIS HAMILTON fears his car is too slow to deliver a record-breaking eighth world title.Mercedes set the fastest-time during pre-season testing in Barcelona last month but have been chasing Red Bull and Ferrari’s tails during this week’s final test in Bahrain.

      And ahead of next week’s season opener Hamilton believes Merc have a lot of work to do if he is going to break Michael Schumacher’s record of seven world championships this year.
      The 37-year-old said: “It is too early to have those kind of thoughts about the world championship, but at the moment I don’t think we will be competing for wins.
      “We’re not the quickest at the moment.
      “Ferrari look to be the quickest and perhaps Red Bull and then maybe us or McLaren – but we’re currently not at the top.

      Their performance in testing left Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz to accuse them of holding back pace as they have done previously.
      Mercedes struggled in testing last year, only for Hamilton to clinch the win in the opening race while teammate Valteri Bottas picked up the fastest lap.
      Yet Hamilton says his team are genuinely struggling this season due to the major design changes for 2022.

      He added: “It’s not as good. It’s not going to look as good as it did last year with the difficult session we had in practice and then switch over to the race.
      “There is potential within our car to get us there.
      “We’ve just got to learn to be able to extract it and fix some of the problems, which is what we’re working on.”
      Hamilton signed a new two-year deal with the Silver Arrows last summer to take him racing into his late 30s.
      But he said he has no plans to follow fellow sporting greats Tom Brady and Roger Federer by continuing to compete in his 40s.
      Hamilton said: “I haven’t thought about that number, because I’m 37. Jeez, I’ve still got a bit to go.“
      “So, I honestly haven’t thought about that, and I don’t plan on being here close to that age.” More

      The two traded blows all season only for Hamilton to fall at the final hurdle when former race director Michael Masi failed to follow safety-car rules.
      Tempers boiled over but Hamilton maintains there is still a level of respect between him and Red Bull champion Verstappen.
      Ahead of the first race of the new season in Bahrain next weekend, Mercedes ace Hamilton said: “You’ve got to be careful, the way people hype up drama, it creates a narrative for the fans — and for me and Max.

      Red Bull boss Christian Horner has done a U-turn on his quoted remarks regarding the legality of the new Mercedes car.
      Horner was quoted by a German publication, where he questioned Merc’s new slimline design, but now says it seems to conform to the regulations.

      Hamilton was pipped to a record eighth world title by Verstappen in controversial fashion in the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
      The dramatic overtake on the last lap led to one of the most exciting seasons in history.

      WILLIAMS Formula One driver Nicholas Latifi was forced to flee his car after it set on FIRE at pre-season testing in Bahrain. Latifi’s rear brakes appeared to fail as he went into Turn 12, causing the car to spin off the track.

      The back end of the Williams car caught fire and the session was brought to a grinding halt with a red flag.
      But as a fire marshal tried to put the flames out, there was a small explosion.
      The marshal was initially startled but continued to do his job before Canadian driver Latifi joined in with a fire extinguisher.
      F1 is set to get back underway on March 20 in Bahrain.

      Red Bull boss Christian Horner was quoted by a German publication questioning whether the design was legal.
      The team later issued a statement: “Christian Horner has not given any interviews regarding Mercedes’ car. Any quotes being attributed to him this morning are incorrect.”
      However, the publication insisted their quotes from Horner were right, prompting Red Bull to clarify their remark by stating no official comment had been made.
