      George Russell worried by Mercedes’ horror opening race of the F1 season after car kept ‘smashing into the ground’

      GEORGE RUSSELL admitted he is concerned about his Mercedes “smashing into the ground” during the season opener in Bahrain.The Brit finished fourth in his Silver Arrows debut on Sunday but was helped by both Red Bulls retiring late on.

      Team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished third but was way off the pace set by Ferrari’s race winner Charles Leclerc.
      And Russell, who joined from Williams this season, revealed he is worried about the performance.
      The 24-year-old said: “We are quite draggy, but this bouncing and ‘porpoising’ we are experiencing down the straight will slow you down because we are smashing into the ground rather than going forwards.
      “I think the lap time deficit we have is 50% on the straight and 50% in the corners.

      Seven-time world champion Hamilton also admitted that Mercedes had ‘a lot of problems’ to address if they want to be competitive in 2022.
      Russell continued: “We know if we unlock this performance it will benefit everything. It will help the tyres, help us on the brakes and we will find more grip from it.
      “We really hope we can find a solution as soon as possible because we just know that will answer a lot of our issues, but it’s easier said than done.”

      The equivalent in Formula One is seeing Ferrari back in the hunt for world titles, which is incredible when you think back to those years of dominance from Michael Schumacher.
      Here in Bahrain, there was a distinct feeling that Charles Leclerc’s win on Sunday has given the sport a huge shot in the arm – unless you work for Red Bull that is!
      Leclerc, 24, is an unusual commodity for F1. He is universally liked, seemingly by everyone including his own team-mates.

      It is easy to see why. He is polite – I cannot recall a single moment where he has been even the remotest-bit arrogant or rude in an interview – he speaks three languages and is fair on the track.
      His battle with Verstappen on Sunday was hugely respectful and resulted in the Dutchman coming off worse after getting his overtaking all wrong, locking up his wheels and ruining his tyres – the world champ obviously blamed his brakes.
      Leclerc is quick and is a fantastic addition into the Max versus Lewis dynamic, which promises to be a  fascinating fight this season.
      To have Ferrari in the mix of a team battle will be excellent to watch too, as F1 is a much better place with them at the front, rather than mid-table obscurity.

      F1 needs Ferrari just as much as Ferrari needs F1.
      All the threats in the past of the Italian team walking away from the sport and setting up their own championship were only going to be empty.
      It would not be a world championship without the right to be called F1, while the sport would only maintain its position as the  pinnacle of motorsport with the most famous car brand in the world on board.
      Which is why it is staggering to think that this season, after just one victory in the opening race, there is genuine belief Ferrari can win the constructors’ title – for the first time since Hamilton sealed his maiden crown with them in 2008.
      Last year was unmatched in terms of drama between Hamilton and Verstappen.
      But in 2022, with Ferrari in the mix with along with Red Bull and Mercedes for victories and titles, we could be in for a great season.

      Saudi GP bosses insists F1 race WILL go ahead despite fears over missile attack in Jeddah

      SAUDI GP bosses say this weekend’s F1 race will NOT be derailed by rebel attacks on the country.In Jeddah, which hosts the second race of the season this Sunday, a petrol depot was hit by missiles from Yemen’s Houthi group causing a fire.

      Reuters reported that the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said it had intercepted and destroyed a “hostile air target” which was aimed towards the Red Sea city of Jeddah, according to Saudi state media.
      Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group had earlier attacked an Aramco distribution plant in Jeddah, after firing missiles and drones at Saudi energy and water desalination facilities in the southern Jizan region.

      CHARLES LECLERC played a joke on his Ferrari team on the final lap of the Bahrain GP – telling his engineer his engine was broken.The Ferrari ace was leading the race when he radioed them with the prank just moments before crossing the line.

      Leclerc, who started on pole and had led every lap, held off Max Verstappen, who suffered a fuel pump failure and retired.
      Leclerc said: “I did a bit of a joke on the radio on the last lap, saying that there was something strange with the engine.
      “It gave a heart attack to some of the engineers I’m sure, but everything was fine. So yeah, very happy that this time we brought it home.”
      Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz was second and is set to be rewarded with a new contract after impressing since joining from McLaren.

      Sainz, 27, was quizzed if he was close to agreeing terms about extending his stay with the Italian team.
      He added: “We are very, very close. Extremely close. Nearly there.”
      Team principal Mattia Binotto confirmed the deal has been agreed and that it only needs to be drawn up for Sainz to sign.

      FORMULA ONE world champion Max Verstappen has hinted that his late retirement from Sunday’s Bahrain GP could cost him the title. The flying Dutchman was on course for a second place finish in the F1 season opener before suddenly losing power in the closing stages.

      Saudi Arabia Grand Prix scare with F1 bosses ‘monitoring situation’ after missile attacks Jeddah just a week before race

      FORMULA ONE chiefs are monitoring the situation in Saudi Arabia after a petroleum depot was attacked by rebels.The sport heads to Jeddah next for the second race of the season where the Aramco fuel plant was hit.

      Reuters reported that the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said it had intercepted and destroyed a “hostile air target” which was aimed towards the Red Sea city of Jeddah, according to Saudi state media.
      Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group had earlier attacked an Aramco distribution plant in Jeddah, after firing missiles and drones at Saudi energy and water desalination facilities in the southern Jizan region.
      Al Arabiya English quoted a spokesman from The Arab Coalition, who said: “We destroyed 106 explosive-laden boats that posed a threat to the freedom of navigation in the southern Red Sea.”
      The Arab Coalition also announced that Saudi Arabia’s Air Defence Forces had intercepted and destroyed nine drones.
