F1 chiefs may reconsider staging Saudi GP now we are safely out of there with cheques cashed

I HAVE filed reports from a number of strange places.
I once sent in a story while sat on the floor of M&S in London Bridge — plugged into a socket to power up my dead laptop.

But until Friday in Saudi Arabia, I’d never filed from a war zone.
Too much of an exaggeration? I don’t think so.
The missile attack on the Aramco fuel depot by the rebel Houthis was too close for comfort at just six miles away from the F1 track.
Even with a three-day armistice proposed from the Iran-backed Yemeni group, I didn’t feel especially comfortable in Jeddah given the almost daily exchange of missiles.

As a result I decided not to go on the grid before the race for my safety.
After all, would you really trust someone who had been lobbing missiles into your back garden for the past eight years not to throw just one more when you were least expecting it?
The huge plumes of smoke that drifted out of the giant oil container signalled the start of a seminal moment for F1.
Finally, the sport’s owners were forced to listen to those who can make the difference as to where it races — the drivers, who threatened a boycott.

The race is a perfect example of Saudi’s desire to use sport as a vehicle to peddle their narrative. Only this time it backfired.
Part of Saudi’s ‘2030 Vision’ is to turn the country into a tourist destination, with billions being spent on creating mega cities to rival the likes of Dubai.
Holding sporting events is key to creating the image of a must-visit place, particularly it seems with motorsport.
The Dakar Rally is now in Saudi, as is Formula E, Extreme E and F1.
In fairness, the people in Jeddah have been incredibly welcoming and a visit to the old town is well worth it if you happen to be there.
But no matter how much they spend, images of a burning refinery in the background of an F1 race will always trump the travel brochures.
I can assure you, the threat of a boycott from the drivers was very real.
Initially the fear was over safety and then came the bigger issue — the fact F1 was in Saudi Arabia in the first place.
Of course we know the reason why F1 goes there — about 55 million of them if we are to believe reports into just how much the Saudis pay to host the race.
There is also the sponsorship deal of the state-owned Aramco oil company, who pour another £40million into the sport.
Remember, F1 is a business, which probably explains why chief exec Stefano Domenicali said what he did on the eve of race day.
Amid all the calls for cancelling the race, somewhat bewilderingly he said: “We are not blind but we mustn’t forget one thing: and that is this country and the sport in which we believe is making a massive step forward.
“Don’t forget a couple of years ago women couldn’t drive. Now they are here on the grid.
“I do believe we are playing a very important role in the modernisation of this country. We are focused on making this the centre of our agenda.”

Of course, he was speaking before the race and, more importantly, after the cheque had been cashed.
But it felt that even he didn’t really believe the words that were coming out.
Persuading the drivers to go ahead and race was simply a case of kicking the can down the road.
However, let’s see what happens next to this race — now we are safely out of Saudi airspace.
I suspect it will be a different story.
ARTEM’S OK WITH STANCE
RUSSIAN speedway world champ Artem Laguta has no regrets over criticising the invasion of Ukraine, despite being stripped of his Motorcycle Federation of Russia licence.
The 31-year-old is now effectively rendered stateless after Polish authorities were also unwilling to let him race on a PZM licence in league racing in 2022.
The sport’s governing body, the FIM, have also stopped him and fellow Russian Emil Sayfutdinov from racing in the Grand Prix World Championship series this year.
Laguta said: “I have not hurt anyone in my daily life, much less on the track. I have always tried to help people and be a good person.
“I feel as if I started this war. I am Russian but I haven’t done anything to anyone and I have no influence over what is happening.
“These are the hardest days in our lives. I hope that peace will come again.”

‘Exercise in humility’ – Mercedes chief Toto Wolff ‘not having fun’ after Lewis Hamilton’s poor start to F1 season

TOTO WOLFF has admitted Lewis Hamilton’s slow start to the Formula One season is “no fun at all” for Mercedes. Hamilton miraculously grabbed a podium spot in Bahrain, but finished way down in tenth in Saudi Arabia after being knocked out in Q1 on Saturday.

It was the first time since 2017 the seven-time world champion hadn’t progressed past Q1, and was a sobering reminder of how far off Ferrari and Red Bull Wolff’s Mercedes team are.
After dominating the sport for so long, Wolff has labelled the start to the season as “an exercise in humility,” with Hamilton’s car severely lacking pace.
George Russell has impressed with P4 and P5 in the opening two races of the 2022 calendar, but it’s still not where Mercedes want to be.
Wolff told Sky Sports: “We were right in the middle of those fun games at the front for eight years.

And Wolff reckons F1 bosses have got exactly what they had hoped for so far.
He added: “They have achieved what they wanted to achieve. Spectacular racing, good overtaking, the grid has been shaken up – which is less fun for us – but it happens.
“The midfield is extremely close so overall, from the entertainment factor, I’m happy about the hype around Formula 1. I think then they achieved the target. You can only applaud for how that all came in.”
Two races into the 23-race season, Wolff is yet to discover the reason why Mercedes are languishing so far behind Ferrari and Red Bull.
Worryingly though for fans of the team, the Austrian admitted “there are deficits everywhere” when it comes to competing with the title rivals.
Wolf said: “We are not running the car where we are wanting to run it, therefore it’s very difficult to really assess what the lap time deficit is if we’re able to run the car lower.
“I would very much hope that the gap is much closer to what we’ve seen, but there are deficits everywhere.” More

MICK SCHUMACHER miraculously escaped a terrifying 170mph crash during qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at the weekend.The Haas star, 23, smashed into a concrete wall after losing control over a kerb as his wrecked car was sent flying down the track with the Formula One world panicking.

Medics rushed onto the track to check on the German, with reports quickly filtering through that he was conscious and talking.
Schumacher, son of F1 legend Michael, was taken to hospital for checks but returned to the Jeddah circuit the next day unharmed.
His car, however, was left in tatters and even split into two as cranes worked to get it off the track.
Despite being fit to race, Haas ordered Schumacher to sit the race out as both he and the car recovered for the Australian Grand Prix on the weekend of April 7-10.

On Sunday, Schumacher revealed he was “alright” and “not too sore either”.
But after his on-board footage of the smash was shown by Sky Sports on Sunday, it’s incredible the young racer escaped with barely a scratch.
Schumacher can be seen losing control over a kerb and flying into the concrete wall before bouncing off and flying down the track with absolutely no control and car parts spilling everywhere.
Additional footage – shared by a fan sitting in the grandstand directly behind the crash – shows the horrifying impact and aftermath.

Fortunately, Schumacher walked away with minimal injuries and was passed fit to race having qualified 14th.
But his team decided to sit the race out to prepare for Melbourne.
On Sunday, Schumacher had his say on the crash, telling Sky Sports: “We had a small slide going through turn nine which then upset temperatures in the tyre and also positioning.
“Coming to the curb I was 20 to 30cms wide of where I wanted to be so the rear tyre dropped over the curb.
“The moment we touch a curb we lose contact to the ground and that means there is nothing holding us back from spinning.
“I saw a few other guys have a similar issue, except they were able to catch it.”
When asked if the Saudi track, which made its F1 debut only last year, is safe – he added: “I think there are things we have to have a look at.
“I don’t know what happens in the future. But if so, we need to have a serious discussion about it.”

He said: “I am relieved to have got through the weekend.
“All we want to do is race. But it is a nervous place to be as a driver and that is why we had the talks we did. We were given reassurances and told it is safe, and we had to believe that.

PIERRE GASLY has revealed he felt like he was “getting stabbed” in the stomach towards the end of the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.The AlphaTauri driver, 26, claimed his first points of the season with an eighth place finish on Sunday.

But since then he has confirmed the horrific pain he was experiencing for the last third of the race.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “The last 15 laps I’ve never had that much pain, I don’t know what happened in my intestine.
“The last 10 laps was like getting stabbed every left corner, the most painful laps I’ve had so I don’t know what’s happened.
“Anyway I’m just happy the race is over and happy we got these points.

“All of these cars perform best at low ride height and we can’t get anywhere close to where our rivals are running.
“We’re doing everything we can back at base to try and emulate the issues we are seeing on track and I’m sure we can solve it.”
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says seeing his team struggle for points after eight consecutive constructor championships is “painful”.
He said: “We had the luxury of being right in the middle of those fun games at the front these past eight years.
“As an F1 stakeholder I’m benefitting from a great show but on the other side, it’s extremely painful to be not part of the fun games by quite a chunk of a deficit.
“We are not going to rest until we are back in the mix. It’s no fun at all. The exercise in humility will make us stronger in the end.
“The cars delivered on what F1 hoped for; great overtaking and providing a great show. I think it was entertaining to watch.
“F1 has achieved what they wanted to achieve, spectacular racing, good overtaking and the grid has been shaken up.
“The midfield is extremely close so overall I’m happy about the hype around F1. You can only applaud the changes.
“But we are not running the car where we wanted. I would hope the gap is closer than what we have seen, but there are deficits everywhere.”
