The Alfa Romeo man was caught in a three-way tangle with George Russell and Pierre Gasly and sent into a terrifying roll before skidding along the surface upside down.
He was still travelling at such speed across the gravel trap that he was catapulted over the tyre barriers and his car was only stopped by the catch-fencing, last-line of defence before the grandstand full of spectators.
His car came to rest in a crumpled mess, wedged between the crash barrier and wire fencing, which had saved the fans from some serious injury.
The race was red flagged immediately to allow medics to rush to Zhou – and just as well too, for there had been a track invasion at the Wellington Straight by protestors.

There were incredible scenes as five people sat down on the track – risking their lives and others – had the cars been running at full speed.
It was simply unbelievable given the circuit had been warned by police by the threats of an invasion from environmentalists.
There was a delay as police arrived on the scene to remove them while the extraction team were able to free Zhou from the wreckage.
Alex Albon, was was also caught up in the first lap smash, was taken to hospital for checks but all drivers were passed fit.
It was testament to the halo on Zhou’s car that saved him from serious injury.
At the second start, there was less of a rocket start for Hamilton but there was more of a concern for Max Verstappen, who had something wrong with his Red Bull.

The Red Bull man was exasperated over the team’s radio as he was told he had some broken bodywork that was costing him some performance.
“I don’t know why the f*** you put me on these tyres, given the damage,” Verstappen screamed at his engineer. “I’m driving like I’m on ice.”
Meanwhile, Hamilton started catching the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Sainz, who were having their own squabble up front.
Leclerc was quicker – despite his damaged car – than Sainz, who was leading. Eventually Sainz was told “not good enough, we are swapping the cars”.
It was hard on the Spaniard, who had taken pole the previous day but also one that was understandable.
But he was not done, despite the team orders, he was catapulted back into the lead after a safety car was deployed when Esteban Ocon broke down on track.
Sainz got past Leclerc and into the lead and he managed to hold on to record his first win.
But behind him there was drama as Hamilton battled Perez and Leclerc while Fernando Alonso also got into the mix.
It was heart in the mouth stuff as they traded places. On track, off track, it was sensational stuff.

Sainz crossed the line first ahead of Perez and Hamilton to take victory No.1 at the 150th attempt.
But it was Hamilton’s drive which proved to be the main event for the home fans as he took the final place on the podium behind Perez, who himself had looked out of the running after getting caught on the lap one melee.

The beginning of the British GP was marred by a horrific crash just seconds into the race.
Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu’s car rolled over after being clipped, going on to skid 200 metres upside down before flipping over the barrier.
The Chinese rookie driver was thankfully okay, receiving medical attention before being stretchered away.
The crash came about after Russell was clipped at the back of his Mercedes, with his tyre subsequently hitting Zhou.

Albon had collided with Sebastian Vettel amid the melee.
Meanwhile Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauri suffered heavy damage after being hit by Albon after the ex-Red Bull ace had spun into the wall.

THE FIA has confirmed that a group of protestors attempted to disrupt the British Grand Prix.Demonstrators attempted to enter the track at the beginning of the race and were swiftly dealt with by race marshals.

And although the protestors reached the track they were unable to stall the race due to Zhou Guanyu’s horror crash bringing a halt to proceedings just after lights out.
The FIA said in a statement: “We also confirm that after the red flag, several people attempted to enter the track.
“These people were immediately removed and the matter is now being dealt with by the local authorities.”

Russell instantly jumped out of his car to check up on his rival, which ultimately saw him disqualified after leaving his vehicle.
A red flag was immediately called, with Alex Albon also involved in the incident to leave him out of the race after colliding with Sebastian Vettel.

Thankfully for Guanyu, he was not seriously hurt in the accident with Alfa Romeo declaring that he is OK.
Guanyu was able to be taken out of the car, where he was instantly placed on a stretcher on his way to receive further medical attention, with Williams’ Albon also taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

The crash came about after Russell was clipped at the back of his Mercedes, with his tyre subsequently hitting Zhou.
His vehicle instantly flipped over where he skidded towards the barriers at a frightening pace.
It then catapulted over the tyre barrier as it smashed into the fence.
His halo undoubtedly prevented serious injury.
It is the second time the halo has potentially helped avoid a fatal incident following Sunday morning’s F2 race.
Dennis Hauger’s car was launched into the air after he connected with a sausage curb on the second lap.
He then flew into Roy Nissany, with the Israeli driver miraculously appearing to avoid injury despite the collision.
Speaking after the crash, Russell told Sky Sports: “Firstly I’m glad to see Zhou is OK after an absolutely horrific incident.
“Ultimately we took a risk starting on the hard because I made a mistake in qualifying and we were starting out of position.

“When I came back to the car I couldn’t quite get it started for whatever reason so I ran back to the team to check.
“I told the marshals to leave the car and when I got back it was on the back of the flatbed. As soon as you get assistance you can’t restart.

A FORMULA 2 driver has survived a life-threatening crash at Silverstone after a car landed on top of him in a horror collision. Dennis Hauger’s car was launched into the air after he connected with a sausage curb on the second lap of this morning’s F2 race.

He then flew into Roy Nissany, with the Israeli driver miraculously appearing to avoid injury despite the collision.
Motorsport fans are thanking the halo for saving Nissany, with the safety device built into the cockpit to protect the head of the driver.
Nissany had been competing with Hauger for position before last season’s F3 champion slid onto the sausage curb and was launched into the air.
Dramatic pictures show Hauger landing on the top of Nissany at high speed, but both drivers thankfully walked away from the crash.
