MERCEDES chief Toto Wolff has revealed his team could switch back to an older car after Lewis Hamilton and George Russell’s struggles continued in Miami.Russell finished fifth and Hamilton sixth in last Sunday’s Grand Prix despite a promising performance in practice.

But the persistent issue of the car bouncing was present once again and there was no obvious sign of improvement despite Mercedes making upgrades to the car prior to Miami.
Wolff was asked about Mercedes’ next steps and whether a return to a previous car concept – one that was revealed in Barcelona testing at the start of the year – could be on the cards.
The German told Sky Sports: “I wouldn’t discount anything. But we need to give all of our people that have produced great race cars in the past the benefit of the doubt and we believe this is the route to go.
“We need to find out how we can make the current car work predictably for the drivers.

“We are faithful to the current concept.
“We’re not looking at the lady next door if we like it more or not, because it’s still good.
“We need to understand, before we make a decision on another concept – where did this one go wrong? And what is the goodness of the concept and what is the badness of the concept?”
A lot has gone wrong for Mercedes this year with Hamilton identifying several problems with the car – mainly a lack of speed.

His best finish of third came in Bahrain but the Brit only secured a podium place due to Red Bull pair Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez having to abandon.

MCLAREN Formula 1 driver Lando Norris has blasted the Miami Grand Prix, labelling it as “crap” and “terrible.”Norris, who failed to finish the race following a collision between himself and AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly, said the surface of F1’s newest track was not up to par.

The British driver said: “Honestly, I think it is a good race track. It is just the track surface is not what it needs to be.
“It is not at the level it needs to be for Formula 1.
“We come here, everyone expects a great race and we just can’t do it because of the surface we are racing on.”
This weekend marked the first American Grand Prix of the season, with the second set to come during the season’s latter stages at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Reigning F1 world Champion Max Verstappen ran out as the eventual winner, with his Red Bull’s pace proving too much for Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz early on.
Norris added: “I think also the track is tearing up and literally turning into crap so we have to start using all these kerbs because if you stay on it, it is just like oil or something.”
“It was just terrible so they just need to rethink it and hopefully resurface it with something we know is actually working and gives good grip, makes good racing and things like that.”
Perhaps surprisingly given the reaction to the race, there was a total of 54 overtakes, which makes it the second most all season behind the opener Bahrain.

LEWIS HAMILTON faces fines and a possible ban from the Monaco Grand Prix due to his jewellery row, according to Sky Sports’ Ted Kravitz.The Mercedes star, 37, was given a medical exemption for two races – Miami and Barcelona – where he was allowed to wear piercings.

But the FIA have ordered Hamilton to remove ALL piercings by the time he races in Monaco at the end of May, in order to comply with safety regulations.
Hamilton has abided by rules in taking out his earrings but his nose stud remains an issue as it cannot be removed easily, and Kravitz believes that could spark a nasty conflict between the Brit and the FIA.
He said on Sky Sports’ Ted’s Notebook: “He’s taken his earrings out but he can’t take out his nose [stud] and we thought he was going to have minor surgery to take out the nose [stud].
“Hamilton’s now saying, having been given two races’ grace, here (Miami) and in Barcelona, that he will not take out his nose [stud].
