      CHARLES LECLERC had a day to forget after crashing Nicki Lauda’s £1million 1974 Ferrari into the wall at Monaco.The current Ferrari star, 24, has had a wonderful year in Formula One this season and leads the world championship standings by 19 points.

      But he had a nightmare around his home track in Monaco while demonstrating icon Lauda’s car.
      It appeared to be a smooth ride until brake failure caused Leclerc to lose control of his rear going into La Rascasse corner.
      The Frenchman spun out and the back of the Ferrari 312 B3 collided with the wall.
      Leclerc managed to get going again but damage to the rear wing caused it to rub along the wheel, leaving the driver mortified.

      Leclerc tweeted after the crash: “When you thought you already had all the bad luck of the world in Monaco and you lose the brakes into rascasse with one of the most iconic historical Ferrari Formula 1 car.”
      Lauda finished fourth in the overall standings in 1974, winning the Grands Prix in Spain and the Netherlands.
      So not only does the car possess sentimental value – it even went on auction at a starting price of £1million in 2011.

      FIA chief Mohammed ben Sulayem has hinted that disgraced race director Michael Masi could RETURN to F1. Australian Masi was axed from his position in February due to the role he played in the controversial 2021 title decider in Abu Dhabi.

      Masi was then axed in February, with Red Bull chief Helmut Marko even claiming Hamilton was responsible for Masi losing his job.
      Ben Sulayem continued: “I don’t know Michael very well. The decision (to sack him as race director) was made by the World Council. It was human error on Michael’s part.”

      Ben Sulayem concluded: “Michael is there and we might use him. I didn’t say we were getting rid of him.
      “I said we might use him. He may be in a good place to use. We are open to everything.
      “Our race structure was wrong organisationally. And though we have brought in two new race directors, I wouldn’t say we have got it all right yet. We need to clean the stables.

      MCLAREN have announced they will join Formula E next season after agreeing to buy out Mercedes. The British team have been considering joining the the all-electric championship following their decision to expand into the Extreme E series this year.

      And after German manufacturer Mercedes announced last year they would be joining Audi and BMW in leaving Formula E , the Surrey-based team have decided to step in.
      McLaren CEO Zak Brown said: “McLaren Racing always seeks to compete against the best and on the leading edge of technology, providing our fans, partners and people with new ways to be excited, entertained and inspired. 
      “Formula E, like all our racing series, fulfils all those criteria.
      “It is also satisfying to provide a home for the class-leading Formula E team that Mercedes has built, which will become a fully-fledged part of the McLaren Racing family.
      “While run separately to our F1 and IndyCar teams, Formula E complements and builds out our EV racing programme alongside Extreme E.”
      Ian James, Team Principal of the Mercedes-EQ team, will continue to lead the team in orange next season with the buy out expected to be completed later this year.

      The 32-year-old has enjoyed his fair share of get-together’s during his nine-years in F1.
      But nothing tops the time he wiped out the entire floor of a hotel.
      Ricciardo was speaking at a McLaren and Hilton hotels event ahead of last weekend’s Miami GP.
      When asked to recall his most memorable experience, Ricciardo admitted: “I mean, I didn’t merely trash the room, I trashed the whole floor.”

      The ownership of the Mercedes F1 team is split three ways between Wolff, British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe and the German car giant.
      And Mercedes-Benz chairman, Ola Kallenius, says they are staying in F1 because it fits in with their values.
      He said: “We have decided to go down this path of decarbonisation. It is the only decision we can make, and the same goes for Formula One.”
      F1 has set itself the ambitious goal of being net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and will introduce new, greener engines in 2026 that will offer an improvement on hybrid technology.
