FORMER F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone believes Lewis Hamilton would have won an eighth world title if Mercedes had deployed a smarter strategy. Hamilton was pipped to the championship by Max Verstappen on the final lap of the last race at a dramatic Abu Dhabi GP last season.

But Mercedes could have possibly made sure the Safety Car stayed on the track until the end of the race after it was called out with five laps left to go.
That would have meant the leading driver at the time, Hamilton, would have won the race and also the 2021 title.
Ecclestone was asked by Swiss outlet Blick whether Mercedes could have “radioed to [Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri] Bottas to let the car coast because they want to preserve the engine.”
Had they done so, in all likelihood the Safety Car would have stayed out and Hamilton would have won the race.
And Ecclestone responded: “Pretty clever. I thought of that too, and it would have been ideal to make sure the Safety Car stayed out and the race wouldn’t have been restarted.
“Many people would have been upset, but there wouldn’t have been any changes to the final result.”
He was then asked if they failure to make the call to Bottas had been costly in handing the championship over to Verstappen.

Porpoising refers to when an F1 car bounces up and down during races and is thought to be the thing which left Mercedes star Hamilton in agony after Sunday’s race in Baku.
Hamilton’s Merc team-mate George Russell has suggested the FIA need to look over the ground-effect aerodynamic regulations which have played a big role in causing their team’s W13 car to bounce.
Merc boss Toto Wolff says Hamilton’s injuries are severe enough to make him a doubt to race in Canada this weekend.
But Horner says the highlighting of these types of issues are typical of the gamesmanship which comes with F1.

When asked how he would approach a porpoising issue for his drivers at Red Bull, he said: “I’d tell them to bitch as much as they could over the radio and make as big of an issue out of it as they possibly could.
“It’s part of the game.”

And Horner believes Merc could address their porpoising issue by simply raising the ride height of the car – instead of prioritising its performance.
He added: “There are remedies to that but it is to the detriment of the car performance, so the easiest thing to do is to complain from a safety point of view.
“I think if it was a genuine safety concern across the whole grid then it’s something that should be looked at.
“But if it’s only affecting isolated teams, then that’s something that team should potentially deal with.” More

There had been doubts on whether the seven-time world champion would be fit to race in Montreal this weekend, with just five days between the race in Baku and practice one in Canada.
But this morning Hamilton revealed he is going to jet out for the ninth race of the season, and “wouldn’t miss it for the world”.
That’s despite the Brit admitting he did have trouble sleeping overnight following the severe bouncing issues that plagued his Mercedes over the weekend.

Unlike Mercedes, Red Bull have minimal porpoising issues and the performance of their car may be hindered by a rule change.

Hamilton, 37, has been troubled physically by the bouncing and porpoising of Mercedes’ much-maligned W13 car.
As he clambered out of his motor at the end of the race, the seven-time champion could be seen moving gingerly.

“I cannot express the pain you experience, especially on the straight here. In the end you are just praying for it to end.
