      F1 Austrian Grand Prix LIVE RESULTS: Leclerc PIPS Verstappen to pole whilst Hamilton SNATCHES 3rd in DRAMATIC race

      CHARLES LECLERC overcame the dramatic Red Bull Ring circuit to secure first place at the Austrian Grand Prix.The Ferrari icon picked a perfect moment in lap 53 to overtake Max Verstappen who led throughout most of the race.
      And Carlos Sainz looked to be gaining momentum in third spot before a engine failure sent his Ferrari up in flames.
      Which then presented the opportunity for seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton to claim the final spot on the podium

      Carlos Sainz reacts
      When speaking to Sky Sports, Sainz said:
      “I knew there was something wrong as soon as it happened.
      “There was no feedback that it was about to happen. It was very sudden and it is hard because it was a big loss of points and a potential one-two for the team.
      “I saw a lot of fire and damage and we will have to look at why this is.
      “It is more difficult to take because we were about to bring in a very big result to cut the gap to Max and Red Bull, but it is still a long season ahead.”

      Sainz’s escape
      Carlos Sainz was forced to retire from today’s race due to an engine failure.

      When questioned by Sky Sports about his early exit from the race, Perez said:
      “It is a big shame for us, I clearly felt that we did everything we could to avoid an incident.
      “George couldn’t control the speed into turn four and and we ended up making contact when I was clearly ahead.
      “I am sorry for what happened to Carlos Sainz but that is nothing to do with us.
      “The car has not been up there this week so there is some good analysis to be done.”

      When speaking to Sky Sports, the Red Bull chief said:
      “They were very important points today and congratulations to Ferrari, they had a quicker car throughout the majority of the race.
      “Max was coming back at the end there but our tyre deg was higher from halfway through the first stint and it was hard to combat that.
      “Ferrari just seemed lighter on the tyres and obviously they had a pace advantage and that gives you more strategic options.
      “Losing Checo was obviously hugely disappointing.
      “It is unlucky for them today with Carlos but our pace at the end of the race, we still have the fastest lap, but we didn’t have the range we had yesterday and that is something we need to understand.
      “Over the two races we have only given away five points with Max so it is not too bad. We will bounce back in France.”

      “It’s been a bit of a rough weekend, but really grateful that as a team we got third and fourth so we move on from here.
      “I do want to say a thank you to the men and women in the garage who worked so hard to rebuild the car.
      “I had a brand new car on Saturday morning, I made a mistake on Friday, not something I do often.”

      “It was a tricky day.
      “It seemed like we were struggling quite a bit with the tyres, and that happened on every compound – too much degradation on the tyres.
      “But second place is still a good result for us on a tricky day.”

      “It was a really good race. The pace was there. At the beginning we had some good fights with Max and the end was incredibly difficult.
      “I had this issue with the throttle. It would get stuck at 20 or 30 per-cent throttle in the low speeds, so it was very tricky.
      “We managed to make it stick until the end and I am so happy.
      “Weirdly [the throttle issue] was more or less the same time [as Sainz’s retirement], so I had it in my mind.
      “I knew it was not a problem with the engine because it was the pedal that was feeling weird. Luckily it went until the end of the race.
      “I definitely needed that one. The last five races have been incredibly difficult for myself and for the team.
      “To finally show that we have the pace in the car and we can do it is incredible. We need to push until the end.”

      Homophobic and racist abuse by fans cast shadow over Austrian GP as F1 and Lewis Hamilton slam ‘unacceptable’ harassment

      FORMULA ONE chiefs and Lewis Hamilton have condemned the “unacceptable” harassment reported by a number of fans at the Austrian GP.Over the course of the weekend, fans have complained on social media about the abuse, which included homophobic and racist slurs.

      The fans’ reports have been elevated to F1 chiefs, who are taking the matter up with the Red Bull Ring.
      And Hamilton has also taken to social media to slam the abuse.
      It comes after former F1 champion Nelson Piquet used racist and homophobic words in a recently aired interview and has subsequently been banned.

      “This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated and all fans should be treated with respect.”
      Hamilton, who only yesterday criticised fans for cheering his crash during qualifying was also quick to criticise the behaviour.
      He wrote on Instagram: “Disgusted and disappointed to hear that some fans are facing racist, homophobic and generally abusive behaviour at the circuit this weekend.

      “Attending the Austrian Grand Prix or any GP should never be a source of anxiety and pain for fans and something must be done to ensure that races are safe spaces for all.
      “Please, if you see this happening, report it to circuit security and to F1, we cannot sit back and allow this to continue.”
      Red Bull chief Christian Horner also voiced his displeasure at the reports.
      He said: “We are shocked to hear that there have been some incidents of abusive behaviour in the grandstands and the fan parks.

      Hamilton, 37, emerged from the smash physically unscathed, but was left angry at fans who cheered the end of his qualifying session.
      The Brit said: “I didn’t hear they were cheering at the time of the crash. I was going through a bunch of stuff, but I heard it afterwards and I don’t agree with any of that, no matter what.
      “A driver could have been in hospital, and you are going to cheer that? It is mind-blowing that people would do that, knowing how dangerous our sport is.”
      The dangers of the sport have been massively highlighted in the last two race weekends after Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu had his car flipped upside down and crash into the track barriers at 160mph.

      Despite this, when Hamilton crashed he was swiftly reminded he was in Verstappen territory, who won Saturday’s Sprint Race to secure pole for the main event later today.
      When the Dutchman secured pole at last week’s Silverstone Grand Prix, fans in the paddock could be heard booing him – an indicator of the tension left over from their championship battle last year.
      Hamilton added: “I was grateful I didn’t end up in hospital and I wasn’t heavily injured.

      In 2019, he splashed £32m on a Manhattan penthouse in a condo project part-owned by NFL great Tom Brady and his model wife Gisele Bundchen.

      Although not much is known about his property, he once shared a snap of his wonderful view.

      Max Verstappen secures pole for Austrian Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton down in eighth after dramatic sprint race

      MAX VERSTAPPEN eased to victory in the Austrian GP sprint race ahead of the main event tomorrow – while Lewis Hamilton claimed a solitary point for finishing eighth. Dutch world champ Verstappen converted his pole but was helped by Ferrari teammates Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz scrapping for second behind him.

      Hamilton was involved in a crash in qualifying yesterday that meant he started ninth on the grid.
      A dramatic start saw him caught in a tangle with Pierre Gasly early on, with the AlphaTauri driver sent spinning after making contact with Hamilton.
      But the Brit recovered well and piled the pressure on the Haas’ of Mick Schumacher and Kevin Magnussen for almost the entirety of the 23-lap sprint.
      The Haas duo did a good job of frustrating Hamilton, with Schumacher benefitting from DRS off Magnussen in front of him to stay ahead of Hamilton.

      Finally on lap 22 out of 23 the pressure paid off, and Hamilton snuck past Schumacher to take eighth and the final points position.
      There was plenty of drama ahead of tomorrow’s race, with Fernando Alonso failing to start after his Alpine team left the tyre covers on his car ahead of the formation lap.
      Zhou Guanyu was also forced to start from the pitlane after encountering a problem on the formation lap.
      Verstappen though never looked in danger of giving up first after getting away from the Ferrari’s well and scooped eight points, as well as securing first on the grid tomorrow.
