When is England’s first Euro 2020 game? Croatia at Wembley kicks off tournament for Three Lions

ENGLAND are ramping up their preparations for Euro 2020.And the 26 men who will be charged with leading the Three Lions to a trophy for the first time since 1966 are now known with the squad having been announced.
England are looking to win an international tournament for the first time since 1966Credit: Getty
But who will Gareth Southgate’s men be playing against? Here’s all you need to know.
When is England’s first Euro 2020 game?
England’s first Euro 2020 game will be against Croatia.
It will be held on Sunday, June 13 with a 2pm kick-off at Wembley.
The Three Lions will be out for revenge following their World Cup semi-final heartbreak against the Croats three years ago.
On that day, a free kick from Kieran Trippier was not enough as Mario Mandzukic scored an extra time winner for Zlatko Dalic’s team.

Who else will England play at Euro 2020?
England have been drawn in a group containing Croatia, Scotland and the Czech Republic.
Following their game against the Croats, England will take on the Scots in their second match at Wembley, just as they did in Euro 96.
That game will be an 8pm kick-off on Friday, June 18.
England’s third group game will be against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, June 22, also at 8pm.

Will England play all their games at Wembley?
Unlike Euro 96, England will not play all their games at Wembley, or even in England.
This time around, there are eleven host cities with Wembley hosting both semi-finals and the final.
But should England win their group and progress all the way to the final, they will play every game except one at the national stadium.
Following the removal of Dublin as a host city, Wembley is scheduled to host the last 16 match between the winner of England’s group and the runner-up of Group F, containing Portugal, Germany, France and Hungary.
In that scenario, England would have to play the quarter-final in Rome, but all other games would be on home turf. More

Can Wales fans travel to Baku and Rome for Euro 2020?

WALES will be represented in the second European Championship running as they take on Switzerland, Turkey and Italy. But unlike England and Scotland, they will not be playing in the UK in the Euro 2020 group stage.
Wales will play two of their Euro 2020 games in BakuCredit: PA
Wales will also take on Italy at the Stadio Olimpico in RomeCredit: Reuters
Instead, the Welsh will be heading off to Azerbaijan and Italy for the competition.
And that begs the question, are their fans allowed to join them?
Are Wales fans allowed to travel to Baku and Rome?
As far as UK rules are concerned, Wales fans are legally allowed to travel wherever they like.
That’s because the ban on international travel expired on May 17.
However, both Azerbaijan and Italy are currently on the UK’s Amber list, meaning travel is not advised.
And under the current rules, should Wales fans choose to travel to either country, they will have to quarantine at home for ten days on their return.
They will also have to take a rapid Covid test before departure, plus PCR tests on Day 2 and Day 8 after arrival.
And an FAW statement urged supporters not to make the trips to support the Dragons at Euro 2020.
It read: “Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the FCDO (the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) has issued advice warning Cymru fans not to travel to Baku or Rome as Azerbaijan and Italy are on the UK Government’s Amber list.
“For those fans who remain determined to travel despite the warnings, the FAW strongly advises that fans check that their travel insurance is still valid and fit for purpose.”
Entry to Italy and Azerbaijan depends on the criteria set out by the two countries, which are set out below.

Can I enter Italy for Euro 2020?
Italy has reopened to foreign travel and is now allowing passengers from the UK to enter with proof of a negative pre-departure PCR or rapid test.
However, Italy has not announced any plans to sell match tickets to non-Italian residents.
That means you may well end up watching in a bar if you choose to travel.
Can I enter Azerbaijan for Euro 2020?
Unlike Italy, Azerbaijan IS allowing supporters of participating teams from abroad to attend Euro 2020 matches.
And any fans of participating teams will be EXEMPT from local quarantine rules if they hold a valid match ticket.
Moreover, the country will be holding matches at 50 per cent capacity – up from the 25 per cent under which matches will take place in Rome.
All that is needed for Wales fans to enter Azerbaijan and watch their team is a pre-departure negative PCR test.
However, this offer only applies to citizens and residents of the participating countries. and not neutral supporters from Azerbaijan.
As of June 1, fans should NOT travel back from Azerbaijan via Turkey as the country is on the red list.
That means doing so will land you in hotel quarantine on your arrival back in the UK, leaving you £1750 out of pocket.

Can I get travel insurance for Italy and Azerbaijan?
As of June 1, the Foreign and Commonwealth advises against all but essential travel to both Italy and Azerbaijan.
That means if you buy regular travel insurance, it will be void in both countries.
However, some more expensive insurers, such as Battleface, do provide cover for visits to FCO ‘avoid all but essential travel’ destinations.
If you are travelling to Italy and still have a valid EHIC card, you will be entitled to free medical care under most circumstances. But remember to check local regulations. More

Why is Jesse Lingard starting for England against Austria when he’s not in the Euro 2020 squad?

GARETH SOUTHGATE has named his England Euro 2020 squad and there’s no room for Jesse Lingard. But that does not mean this is the end for the West Ham loanee as far as international football this summer is concerned.
Jesse Lingard is not in the England Euro 2020 squad, but Gareth Southgate has said he will start against AustriaCredit: Getty
For a start, Gareth Southgate has stated that Lingard will START in the pre-tournament friendly against Austria at the Riverside.
Why is Jesse Lingard set to start for England against Austria?
While Jesse Lingard is not in the England Euro 2020 squad, the Three Lions have a number of players out for the game against Austria.
Additionally, new Covid rules mean he is not ruled out of the Euros entirely.
Uefa regulations state that while the 26-man squads had to be announced by June 21, changes can be made right up to the opening game of Euro 2020.
And that means there could yet be a logic in giving Lingard another chance to show what he can do.
Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate said: “Jesse’s done incredibly well to get back in the race really.
“Going back to January, he was a million miles from being selected for an England squad.
“I said in March he’d had a fabulous few weeks but you’d have to say he was a little fortunate [to be named in the squad for World Cup qualifying], because we were without about four wide players at the time.
“He’s had a good spell for West Ham and he’s played so well for us with England.
“We have total trust in the way he plays. He’s reliable, he’s a great member of the group.
“He will play tomorrow because we’ve got Sancho ill and we’ve obviously got a lot of players not available, and for the balance of the team he’ll start.
“He deserves that opportunity to go and show me that I’m wrong.
“But also, the lads that are with us. They’re the standby players and we’ve got to keep them ready in case they come into that squad.”

Boro’s ground last staged an international in 2003, when England beat Slovakia 2-1.
The stadium has been selected due to it’s Covid-secure status and continues the trend of England heading out on the road for home internationals.
They’ve played at Manchester, Sunderland, Leeds, Leicester and Southampton since 2016 and the FA have leapt on this opportunity to branch away from London again.
There will be over 8,200 fans in attendance, with the game a sell-out – although that accounts for only 25 percent of the Riverside’s total capacity.
