Which Euro 2020 teams have taken the knee?

EURO 2020 is here and one new feature of the tournament is the differing stance teams are taking against racism.England have become embroiled in a big row with the players condemning fans who booed them taking the knee against Austria and Romania.

And manager Gareth Southgate said the players are even more determined to take the knee following the booing.
Here are the gestures each of the 24 teams will be making during the tournament.
Which teams are taking the knee at Euro 2020?
    England
England will continue to take the knee during Euro 2020, as they have been since the murder of George Floyd last year.
The team have stated that they believe the gesture is not a political one and designed simply to show support for racial equality.
Gareth Southgate said: “I think we have got a situation where some people seem to think it is a political stand that they don’t agree with.
“That is not the reason the players are doing it. We are supporting each other.”
    Wales
Wales and France take the knee in a pre-Euro 2020 friendlyCredit: Reuters
Wales have taken the knee over the past year and will continue to do so.
Interim manager Rob Page said: “We had a meeting and we all think it’s still important to take the knee.
“That’s the message we’ve given out. We’re all in it together and there were no issues.”
    Belgium
Belgium are the only non-British team to announce they will take the knee throughout Euro 2020.
Romelu Lukaku said of any negative reactions: “I don’t care. I fight for diversity.

The Hungarian FA were the first association to confirm they will not take the knee at Euro 2020.
In a statement they said they view the knee as a political gesture in defiance of Uefa and Fifa rules.
It read: “The basic values of the sport are equal opportunities, respect for the teammate and the opponent.
“Football may have become the most popular sport in the world because it belongs to everyone.
“The Hungarian national team not only follows the international rules and norms in all cases, but also pays tribute to everyone – be it an opponent, a fan or anyone else.
“MLSZ has been fighting all forms of hatred for years as part of the ‘Hate is not a track’ campaign.
“The rules of UEFA and FIFA do not allow politicization on the pitch and in the stadium either, which the MLSZ not only accepts but also agrees with.
“The national team will not express its condemnation of any form of hatred by kneeling before the matches.”
During their warm-up game against Ireland, Hungary pointed to the Uefa Respect logo on the sleeves of their shirts while the Irish team took the knee and were booed by a sizeable portion of the 15,000 crowd.

“But the FA provides the players with the right to choose, as the act itself isn’t a part of Croatian culture and heritage.
“The players chose not to kneel down before the Belgium game, but they’ve taken a respectful stance towards the gesture made by their Belgium colleagues.”

The Czechs decided to point to the Uefa Respect logo in their sleeves on that occasion as a “neutral, apolitical gesture”.
During their Euro 2020 opener against Scotland, neither side took the knee.

“Footballers sometimes kneel, and if you asked some of them why they were kneeling, they wouldn’t even know.”
    Slovakia
Slovakia did not take the knee in their Euro 2020 opener against Poland or their second game against Sweden.
The Slovaks took the knee against Ireland and Scotland last October but were criticised in the Slovakian parliament.

It is not known whether they will kneel in any of their other games.

Why do England fans sing Three Lions?
Three Lions was a song released in 1996 by English band The Lightning Seeds to mark England’s participation in that year’s European Championships, held in England.
The music was written by the Lightning Seeds’ Ian Broudie, along with comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner – presenters of the hit football-themed comedy show Fantasy Football League.
This song is one of only three songs to top the British charts twice with different lyrics, the others being “Mambo No. 5” (in versions by Lou Bega and Bob the Builder) and “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” (by Band Aid and Band Aid 30).
It was rereleased in 1998 with updated words.
It regularly reappears in the UK singles chart around major football tournaments involving the England team.
‘Three Lions’ will be sung in pubs up and down the country when Harry Kane takes to the fieldCredit: Rex Features
Why are there three lions on England’s shirts?
England wear three lions on their shirts – as they have done ever since the first international against Scotland in 1872 – because it is the logo of the FA.
However where that logo comes from is a much longer and interesting story.
The lions have a history going back to the 12th century, when a standard with three gold lions on a red field was carried into battle to inspire the troops.
The first one came from Henry I – known as the lion of England – who had a lion on his standard on taking power in 1100.
Shortly afterwards he married Adeliza, whose father also had a lion on his shield, and to commemorate the event he added a second lion to his standard.
In 1154, two lions became three when Henry II married Eleanor of Aquitaine, who also had a lion on her family crest.

Richard the Lionheart later used three golden lions on a scarlet background as a symbol of the English throne and, after that, it appeared on the Royal Arms of every succeeding monarch.
So when the FA was formed in 1863, it seemed natural enough to base their logo on this stirring royal shield.
Since then, the design has only been changed once, in 1949 – when the crown that was on top of the lions was removed to differentiate the badge from that of the English cricket team. More

What is the Auld enemy and why is the nickname used for England vs Scotland?

IT’S THE oldest international fixture in the world, giving the rivalry between the two nations the nickname of the ‘Auld Enemy’. England vs Scotland was first played almost 150 YEARS ago in at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow in 1872, and was played every year after until 1989 except during World War One and Two.

Scotland were the home side that day, although the action on the pitch was not exactly memorable.
The game finished 0-0 but it began what has become the oldest international fixture in world football, and perhaps the fiercest.
The close proximity of the two nations has fuelled the rivalry over the years, as well as Scottish national pride and the want to beat England above all else.
And the term ‘auld enemy’ has become synonymous with the fixture.
The word ‘auld’ literally means ‘old’ in Scottish dialect and is used regularly in Scotland.
Auld Lang Syne is a famous Scottish song – meaning ‘old long since’ – and Edinburgh has the nickname ‘Auld Reekie’ which means ‘old smoky’.
The Auld Kirk is another name for the Church of Scotland… but also the country’s world famous export: whisky.
The rivalry also extends to rugby, with England vs Scotland being the oldest international rugby fixture in the world
The importance of the fixture has been highlighted in the past few days as up to 20,000 Scotland fans have descended on London for tonight’s Euro 2020 fixture between the two sides at Wembley.
The Tartan Army have been allocated less than 3,000 tickets for inside Wembley, but thousands more have made the journey south to watch the game in pubs and bars across the capital.
Tonight’s game has shades of the Euro 96 clash between the sides, remembered mostly for Paul Gascgoine’s iconic goal in the 3-1 England win at Wembley that day.
Scotland fans will never forget beating England at Wembley in 1967, the first defeat for the then world champions in a 3-2 victory with goals from Denis Law, Bobby Lennox and Jim McCalliog.

    Who has won more games?
Over the years it’s England that have had the better of the results, adding to Scottish desperation to get one over the Auld Enemy.
In 114 meetings between the two countries England have won 48 of them, with 41 draws and 25 Scotland wins.
Harry Kane celebrates scoring late on against Scotland at Hampden Park

Who won the last time they played?
The two sides last faced off four years ago at Hampden Park in a 2018 World Cup qualifier, with the game ending in dramatic fashion.
England took the lead after 70 minutes through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but were pegged back by a quickfire Leigh Griffiths brace in the 87th and 90th minute.
The Tartan Army had thought they had won it until Harry Kane’s 93rd minute equaliser broke Scottish hearts, and extended England’s now 22-year unbeaten run against the Auld Enemy.
