Which events are in the decathlon?

THE decathlon is for those athletes who are just gluttons for punishment. It is the great all-around test in athletics – a 10-event contest covering the whole range of running, jumping, throwing and hurdling disciplines, spread over two days.

What does the decathlon consist of?
Decathletes are usually masters of no discipline, but strong in all areas of track and field.
The decathlon is just for male athletes – women compete in the heptathlon.
A perfect score in the decathlon is 1,000 points in each event for a cumulative score of 10,000 points, over the ten events.
    The gruelling decathlon consists of:

    Pole vault
    High jump
    Long jump
    Javelin
    Shot put
    Discus
    110-metre hurdles
    100 metres
    400 metres
    1500 metres

So gruelling that athletes only get a maximum of 30 minutes rest in between events.
Factor in stretching, toilet breaks, water refuelling and coach input – well that’s less than a formula one pit-stop.

Who are the greatest decathletes of all time?
United States’ Jim Thorpe became the first winner of the decathlon in 1912 although he broke amateur rules by playing professional baseball.
Thorpe had all of his Olympic titles deleted, although after his death they were later reinstated.
Fast forward some 110 odd years and Ashton Eaton’s victory at the 2016 Olympics was the 14th decathlon gold medal for the USA, who have been the most dominant nation in the event by a long way as no other country has won more than two gold medals.
He also became the fastest 100-metre runner in a decathlon, crossing the line at 10.21 seconds.

Britain’s Daley Thompson won Olympic decathlon golds in Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984Credit: Rex
Compare that to the world record of 9.58 seconds set by Usain Bolt at the 2009 World Championships – not bad for someone who also competes in nine other events!
Team GB’s most famous decathlete is Daley Thompson, who was unbeaten in the decathlon for nine years, from 1978 to 1987, winning two Olympic gold medals, and at the age of 61 he still holds the British record.
His 8,847 points, set in 1984, is a marker of Thompson’s brilliance and a measure of how far British men in the decathlon trail in his wake. More

And next up it’s Ukraine in the Italian capital after Andriy Shevchenko’s men beat Sweden in extra time.
But will England fans be allowed to join the team in Rome for the quarter-final?
Can England fans travel to Rome for the quarter-final?
England fans are allowed to enter Italy, but they won’t be able to watch the game.
That’s because anybody who arrives from the UK to the country, or has been in the UK for the past 14 days, will be ordered to self-isolate for five days.
To get into Italy, you need to take a rapid test in the 48 hours before travelling and a further rapid test after five days to end your self-isolation.
And reports suggest Italian police will intensify checks on motorways and at the country’s borders to stop England fans travelling to the game.
BREAKING. Italian authorities are reportedly working on intensifying checks at the border and motorways to prevent English fans from going to Italy this Saturday to follow the match against Ukraine.#Euro2020— Antonello Guerrera (@antoguerrera) June 30, 2021

Can any England fans go to Rome for the game?
England fans in Italy will be able to attend the match, as well as those travelling from the EU or Schengen area.
Fans travelling from Canada, Japan or the United States are not bound by the same rules as the UK and will be allowed to enter Italy.

How do I get tickets for England vs Ukraine?
No tickets are currently showing on the Uefa website for fans logging in from the UK.
Should they be released, they will cost £64, £124 and £159.
And the England Supporters Travel Club have confirmed that tickets WON’T be sold by the FA.
But there is work going on behind the scenes for English nationals living in Italy to attend.

Do England fans have to quarantine on return?
Yes. Italy is on the UK amber list, so if you do manage to get to Rome and see the game you will still be required to quarantine at home on arrival back in the UK.
This quarantine lasts ten days (your arrival date is Day Zero) and you must also travel back to the UK with a negative rapid test and book PCR tests on Day 2 and Day 8 in advance of travel.
Your quarantine can be reduced to seven days by taking an additional test on Day 5 using the Test to Release scheme.
That would allow you to attend the Euro 2020 final if England get there and you test negative.
Will England play any other games abroad?
The quarter-final in Rome is the only game England will play abroad.
Should England reach the semi-final and final, both games will be played at Wembley.

Who is Sweden vs Ukraine referee Daniele Orsato and what controversies has he been involved in?

SERIE A referee Daniele Orsato has been call up to Euro 2020 to officiate some of this summer’s biggest games. The Italian official will preside over the final last 16 game between Sweden and Ukraine tonight.
Orsato was at the centre of controversy after using VAR to reverse a decisionCredit: REUTERS
Has he officiated at a World Cup or Euros before?
The Italian made his first World Cup appearance in 2018 but has never been involved with a European Championship before.
However, Orsato has officiated a series of international friendlies and World Cup qualifying fixtures, including the first leg of the World Cup play-off between Honduras and Australia.
He’s also been a senior referee in Serie A for the past three years.
What has he done so far?
Orsato made his Serie C debut in 2002, moving to the premier Serie A division for the 2006-07 season. He has gone on to make nearly 200 appearances in the division.
Since 2012, the Italian has been involved in Champions League fixtures.
Orsato went on to referee last year’s Champions League final between PSG and Bayern Munich before reffing this year’s semi-final second leg between Real Madrid and Chelsea.

    Has he used VAR before?
Orsato reversed a decision in a Serie A clash between Inter Milan and Juventus after using VAR to view the incident.
The Italian correctly decided to send off Inter’s Matias Vecino instead of sticking with the yellow card he had already given.
But in the same game he controversially refused to use VAR after failing to give Miralem Pjanic a card for a high tackle on Rafinha, with the Bosnian already on a yellow.
The decision would prove crucial as Juve went on to secure a late 3-2 win.
VAR has been used in Italian’s Serie A since the start of the 2017/18 season. Orsato is a regular official in the series.
Which Euro 2020 games has he refereed?
Daniele Orsato made his Euro 2020 bow in England’s 1-0 win over Croatia.
And following that game he refereed Spain vs Poland, awarding a penalty to the Spaniards after a VAR review. More
