How many false starts are sprinters allowed in athletics? 100m, 200m, 400m, hurdles and relay rules explained

SPRINTERS are allowed ZERO false starts at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and if found guilty will be instantly disqualified. From January 2010 onward, the official track and field false start regulation indicated that any athlete starting within 100 milliseconds of the gun being fired would be disqualified from the race.

Research has found that a reaction time faster than one-tenth of a second is impossible for a human, and the runner is therefore deemed to have anticipated the gun.
On the ‘Track & Field 101: Rules’ on the Olympics website, it states: “If a sprinter commences his or her starting motion from the set position before the Starter’s gun is fired, it is deemed a false start. The first false start of a race results in an automatic disqualification to the offending runner.”
How can they detect a false start?
False start detection systems were introduced in 1979 and Omega’s false start detection system made its Olympics debut at the Los Angeles Olympics Games.
In major athletics competitions, reaction times are currently detected using IAAF accredited false start detection systems.
These systems determine athletes reaction time using encased accelerometers or force sensors fixed to the rear of the starting block rail to detect changes in force or acceleration exerted on the blocks through the feet.
RT’s can now be instantly calculated accurately to 0.001 of a second, but for results, are recorded to the nearest 0.01 second.
For athletics and specifically sprint athletes reaction times and overall sprint time detection methods have improved dramatically since the original 1896 Olympic Games.
    Were false starts previously allowed?
Originally, before 2010, the “one-and-done” regulation was implemented meaning one false start per race in events up to 400 metres would be allowed rather than one false start per athlete as in the past.
This means the athlete making the second false start of a race, breaking the accepted reaction time of 0.10 seconds, will be disqualified regardless of whether he or she was responsible for the first one.
However, sprinters would often take advantage of the previous false start rules, purposely jumping the gun either to play mind games with their competition and set them on edge before the race or use the extra leniency to predict the gun and gain bonus milliseconds from their efforts.
So, World Athletics just decided to just ban any false starts – it’s one and YOU’RE OUT.

    Usain Bolt
At the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea, Usain Bolt, 100-meter world record holder, jumped the gun in the 100-meter final over a year after the new regulations had been put into place.
Bolt walked off the track, head in hands, only to watch his Jamaican teammate Yohan Blake take the gold.

Drummond’s infamous “I did not move!” plea after his disqualification at the 2003 World Athletics Championships in Paris.
Drummond protested his disqualification by storming into the infield, repeatedly yelling in front of officials and laying on the track.
His tantrum delayed the 100-meter final by ONE HOUR.

    Linford Christie
The 1992 Olympic 100-meter champion was disqualified under an even older false-start rule.

Before 2003, any sprinter could false start once and get away with just a warning however Christie reacted early twice, delayed the competition and refused to leave the track.
This was the first time a previous champion was unable to defend his title live on TV.

Why do England fans sing ‘it’s coming home’, what does it mean, what are the lyrics?

ENGLAND fans are truly beginning to believe that football is coming home after their Euro 2020 semi-final win vs Denmark. Those three words are constantly sung aloud every time the Three Lions close in on lifting a trophy – but what does it mean and where does the phrase come from? Here’s the lowdown…
The song is favourite of England supporters in stadiums around the worldCredit: PA: Press Association
What does ‘Football’s coming home’ mean?
Football’s coming home, or simply it’s coming home, refers to the chorus of iconic England song Three Lions by rock band The Lightning Seeds and comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.
The legendary chorus originally referred to the fact that when the song was released, England was hosting its first major football tournament for thirty years.
However, since then the phrase has evolved to refer to football’s most famous trophy, The World Cup, returning to England, where football was invented.
As tentative hope steadily built for Gareth Southgate’s Young Lions, the phrase football’s coming home has also now become a very popular internet meme.
The song was originally released ahead of England’s 1996 Euro campaign but has recently made a comebackCredit: REUTERS
When was Three Lions released by Baddiel and Skinner and The Lightning Seeds?
In 1996 The Football Association commissioned The Lightning Seeds’ Ian Broudie to write an England song for the upcoming Euro ’96 football tournament.
The singer agreed on the condition that comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel, who at the time presented the late-night television show Fantasy Football League, took part.
Three Lions went on to become a legendary football song and hit the No. 1 spot in the UK Singles Chart in May 1996.
Although the song returned to top the iTunes music chart, co-writer David Baddiel ruled out any plans to re-make the resurgent football anthem.

    What’s the song about?
The anthem is now seen as representing England fans defiant sense of optimism against the painful reality of the Three Lions’s past failures at major tournaments.
However, as England edge ever closer to glory, the song is also sung to show fans believe that this side can, in fact, win the World Cup.
Although the anthem has been echoing around the country for weeks, some fans have been caught chanting the wrong words.
    What are the lyrics?

Does Euro 2020 have a third and fourth place playoff at Wembley?

The best TV deals for Euro 2020 including LG, Sony, Toshiba and more

Does Euro 2020 have a third-fourth place playoff?
Euro 2020 does NOT have a third place playoff.
Whichever teams lose in the semi-final will be treated the same as those knocked out in any other rounds and head straight back home.
Has the European Championship ever had a third-fourth place playoff?
Yes. The European Championship started in 1960 and had a third-fourth place playoff right up to 1980.
The last third-fourth place playoff saw Czechoslovakia beat Italy 9-8 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Rome.
These matches typically suffered poor attendances and were therefore ultimately scrapped.
Does the European Championship have a playoff in the group stages?
No. The European Championship does not have a playoff in the group stages of the competition.
And this is largely due to the procedures Uefa follow in order to rank teams as the group stages progress.
All of the qualified 24 teams are split up into six groups of four, and the top two qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament.
Four of the best 3rd placed teams will join them in the next stage as well.
However, in the event of two or more teams finishing level on points, head-to-head record would decide who goes through.
And if head-to-head cannot separate the two or more sides, goal difference will come into play.
Should teams be level on points, goal difference, goals scored and games won, there still wouldn’t be a play-off.
A penalty shootout would be used to separate two teams playing each other while fair play and coefficient ranking would separate two teams playing separate matches.

In a chat with talkSPORT, Wembley DJ Tony Parry made the decision to play Sweet Caroline in the win over Germany.
He picked it instead of France 98 hit Vindaloo.
“I was going to play ‘Vindaloo’, but went with my gut,” he said as he decided to play Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond.
“Even the German fans were belting it out in the end. It’s a song that all fans can enjoy.
“The match director said in my in-ear ‘the world’s been closed for 18 months… let ’em have it’.”
What are the lyrics to Sweet Caroline?
Where it began, I can’t begin to knowing
But then I know it’s growing strong
    Was in the spring
    And spring became the summer
Who’d have believed you’d come along
    Hands, touching hands
Reaching out, touching me, touching you
    Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
    I’ve been inclined
    To believe they never would
    But now I
Look at the night and it don’t seem so lonely
We filled it up with only two
    And when I hurt
    Hurting runs off my shoulders
How can I hurt when holding you
    One, touching one
Reaching out, touching me, touching you
    Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
    I’ve been inclined
    To believe they never would
    Oh no, no
    Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
    Sweet Caroline

    I believe they never could

Good times never seemed so good More
