How many current or former World Champions are on the grid in 2025?

A NEW Formula 1 season is here and the battle for contending drivers to claim the sought-after World Championship is excepted to deliver once more. Many are gunning for an elusive first title with a record SIX rookies on the grid – but there are a handful of experienced vets looking to add to their trophy cabinets. The elite level of motorsport will have contenders for the championship across the gridCredit: GettyOne of the two Formula 1 world championships that are contested is the Drivers’ Championship. The world champion is the Formula One driver who finishes the season with the most championship points.Although Grand Prix racing has been around since the invention of the vehicle, the championship has been contested annually since 1950. There have been 34 different drivers to have been crowned world drivers’ champion – and three of them will race this year. READ MORE IN F1 How many current or former World Champions are on the grid in 2025?Of course, reigning champion Max Verstappen will look to add to his streak of four consecutive championships. The Red Bull superstar has won every title since 2021, and a triumph this year would put him on par with the legendary Michael Schumacher. They would be the only drivers to have won FIVE consecutive championship. As for Verstappen’s dominant predecessor, Lewis Hamilton will look to overtake Schumacher’s total of seven titles. Most read in MotorsportHamilton, level on seven, has closed off his illustrious chapter at Mercedes and switched the Brackley-base team for the red of Ferrari.Hamilton and Verstappen’s rivalry re-lit the theatre of F1Credit: GettyThe three have 16 World Championships between them – 47% of the all-time totalCredit: GettyThe Brit has been striving for his eight since his last in 2020 – also winning in 2008, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Lastly, 43-year old Fernando Alonso is still going. The Spainard’s championship-winning years are probably behind him – champion in 2005 and 2006 – but the wily race craft can still snatch the odd race podium even in the Aston Martin AMR. More

Who is Mick Schumacher’s long-term girlfriend Laila Hasanovic? Miss Universe finalist-turned-social media sensation

MICK SCHUMACHER may find himself away from Formula 1 but off the track life is good. He’s loved up with his long term partner Laila Hasanovic – and engagement has been on the cards.Mick Schumacher with his long-term partner Laila HasanovicCredit: GettyThe couple are said to have recently got engaged with Laila already inside the Schumacher inner circleCredit: GettyLaila is a model from Denmark with Bosnian rootsCredit: InstagramSon of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, Mick, has found regaining a spot amongst F1’s elite difficult. The 26-year-old driver started his professional motorsport career with Haas in 2021 before being released after two seasons, serving the next two as a reserve driver for McLaren and Mercedes.Nonetheless, Schumacher has been able to find solace away from racing. He has been with Laila Hasanovic for at least two years since going public in August 2023, with the model recently teasing fans by sharing a picture of a diamond ring.READ MORE IN SCHUMACHERShe is the only girlfriend Mick has had who has been allowed to to visit father Michael, according to German newspaper Bild. The seven-time world champion has not been seen in public since his skiing accident on a family holiday in Meribel, France, in 2013.Bild further says the family are ‘smitten’ with the model, who is regularly included in their family plans – so who is she? Life pre-SchumacherBorn in Bosnia and raised in Denmark, Laila Hasanovic was a prodigious model talent from early on.Most read in MotorsportHasonovich, 24, moved to the Danish capital, Copenhagen, at 19 after a year in Kentucky as an exchange student to add some experience on her promise. She was a finalist in the 2019 Miss Universe Denmark pageant, and once the global pandemic broke out the following year, she switched her attention from beauty contests to social media. She amassed 300k followers across Instagram and TikTok in the three years following the worldwide outbreak that saw people stuck in their homes – and has doubled that since dating Schumacher.Strides in modelling Initially working a local paper-round in her early teens before harbouring short-lived ambitions in criminology, Hasonovich has made significant strides on the modelling front.A first break in the game via watch brand Daniel Wellington has transpired to being signed on by PRM Agency and full-blown photo-shoots.Soon-to-be SchumacherHasonovich and Schumacher had to bat away various claims that the couple got engaged October last year. She posted a photo of her hand in July, which appeared to show an engagement ring.Understandably, fans leaped into conclusions before having the news broken by Hasonovich. She posted a second picture of her jewellery, writing on Instagram: “and no it’s not an engagement ring u guyssss”.However, the noise around a possible engagement continues is getting louder as the bond between the model and the Schumacher family grows stronger.Laila has even paid tribute to Michael on social media in the past with a touching tribute.Laila, left, with Michael’s manager Sabine Kehm, centre, and his wife Corinna, right, watching Mick during a race earlier this yearCredit: RexLast March she posted a series of photos to her Instagram followers showing off her handbag and room.In one of the snaps her AirPod case can be seen with the iconic No 47 logo emblazoned on it.Read More on The SunFans of Michael quickly spotted the No 47 which is still seen as synonymous with the driver as he drove under that number.Meanwhile, in August 2023, Mick told RTL with a smile: “I’m really happy”, and “doesn’t want to hide” his love for Laila.  More

F1 2025 rule changes: What has the FIA altered for the new season?

FORMULA ONE is getting ready to celebrate 75 years of the sport – with SEVEN new rule changes for fans ahead of the new season.Lewis Hamilton’s first season at Ferrari will also see a handful of new rule changes, as he prepares to win an eighth world title.Formula One has introduced new rules for the new seasonCredit: gettyRookie drivers such as Kimi Antonelli will benefit from the rule changesCredit: gettyRookie drivers will be happy with the new rules, with the rules seeing them get more time in the car and on the track. The biggest rule change ahead of the new season will see drivers UNABLE to score an extra point if they are the fastest driver on the grid. The rule had before been used as a tactic, with Daniel Ricciardo scoring the point during his final race to deny Lando Norris a Grand Slam weekend. The Sao Paulo 2024 Grand Prix has also enforced a rule change, with the qualifying session unable to even get going during Saturday’s wet weather conditions last season.Read more F1 newsSunSport has everything you need to know about the rule changes ahead of the 2025 season. What rules have changed ahead of 2025?1 – Removal of the fastest lap pointThe biggest rule change for 2025 is the elimination of the fastest lap points. The rule had been implemented in 2019, and it meant that a driver could score an extra point if they finished a lap in the quickest time, if they were inside the top ten of the final classification. Most read in MotorsportIf a driver finished a lap the fastest outside the top ten, then they would still earn the fastest lap title, but would not earn any points. 2 – Driver cooling systemsThe F1 calendar takes drivers all around the world, sometimes to extremely hot climates such as Saudi Arabia. The FIA can now declare a “Heat Hazard” if a weather forecast predicts temperatures to rise to 31C or above, which will lead to an increase in the weight limit of cars.Cars will be allowed an extra 2kg of weight for Practice, Qualifying and Sprint Qualifying sessions, and an extra 5kg for a Sprint or a Grand Prix.3 – Limits on testing old carsThe rules on Testing of Previous Car (TPC) regulations already changed a year ago, as new rules stated teams must test parts that had run during a race weekend at least once.Teams can remain to carry out up to 20 days of TPC testing, but their race drivers are only allowed to take part in four days, during which they cannot exceed 1000km driven. McLaren has showcased the benefit of TPC testing, allowing Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to go back on track in their car from last season ahead of the new season testing. It also offers a huge advantage for younger drivers, who can go out into F1 regulation cars and get prepared to head out into practice sessions. 4 – More running time for rookiesIn F1, a rookie is described as someone who had not completed two F1 Grands Prix.It has been a rule since 2022 that each team must run a rookie in each of their cars – twice in total – over the course of a season.Teams usually chose to fill this time during FP1.However, in 2025 the rule will double, meaning at least twice per season in each car, a rookie must run for at least one session.5 – Stricter restrictions on DRS designs and wing deflectionsThe Drag Reduction System (DRS) essentially allows teams to open their rear wing and reduce downforce, allowing the car to travel at a faster speed. The DRS system is activated when a car is within a second to the car in front of it, and is in one of the designated “DRS zones” on a track.Teams have been able to design a “mini-DRS” concept, in which the rear wing tilts backwards when travelling at fast speeds. The new restrictions look to eliminate this by defining the state of deployment and restriction to only two position: open and closed.6 – Changes to qualifying classificationsThe Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2024 saw qualifying pushed back so far that it essentially happened as a prelude to the race on the Sunday, rather than happening the day prior. The first change states that if the stewards deem the qualifying session unsafe to take place, the race classification order will be based on the Drivers’ Championship classification. Moreover, if one session of a qualifying takes place (Q1), but Q2 and Q3 takes places will multiple drivers not setting a time, they will be ranked based on who set the fastest lap in the prior session. For example, if Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton both start a flying lap in Q3, but there is a red flag that ends the session, the two will be ranked based on which car was faster in Q2.7 – A mule car tyre testThis will change the end-of-season testing in Abu Dhabi. While one car can be allowed to be driven as usual by a driver who has started no more than two Grands Prix, the second car must be used to test tyres for 2026.The tyres will be a different dimension and specification in 2026, and teams will need to test them during their end-of-season testing.
