Why are Man Utd and Leeds football rivals and why is it considered a derby?

MANCHESTER UNITED versus Leeds is a footballing derby which stretches back over a century. But given they are not even from the same city, the rivalry is not an obvious one – yet there are multiple reasons why there is so much ferocity in this match-up.
England legends Bobby and Jack Charlton spent the vast majority of their playing lives Man Utd and LeedsCredit: PA
Roy Keane ending Alfe Inge Haaland’s career giving the Norwegian a long term knee injuryCredit: Empics
You could trace the rivalry all the way back to the War of the Roses, a war that resulted in the House of Lancaster – with its red rose – taking the throne and the Tudor dynasty became etched into English history.
A sort of dynasty then existed between Old Trafford and Elland Road in the 1960s as Bobby and Jack Charlton grew as titans of their respective clubs.
The Red Devils had Sir Bobby at their disposal alongside George Best and Denis Law, while Leeds were blessed with his brother defender-brother Jack alongside Billy Bremner, known as “King Billy”.
One of the moments which epitomised the rivalry came in 1997 when Manchester United legend Roy Keane lunged in on superstar striker Erling Haaland’s father Alfe Inge Haaland, and up breaking his own ACL in the process.
And then four years later, Keane would execute his revenge by ending Haaland’s career by stamping on the Norwegian’s knee after he had moved to Manchester City.
In total, the clubs have met each other 110 times with the Red Devils holding the current bragging rights, having almost double the amount of wins, but when the Whites were relegated from the Premier League in 2004, it put their rivalry on pause.
Now for the first time in 19 years, the nation will get to witness Manchester United travel to Elland Road WITH fans.
The last time the two sides played the Manchester United team featured names like Ruud van Nistelrooy, Darren Fletcher and Tim Howard, as well as Cristiano Ronaldo, who is back at the club.
Meanwhile, Daniel James will be a familiar face in the Leeds team against the club he started the season at.

What is the head to head record?

Leeds United have competitively taken on Manchester United a total of 110 times.
    Leeds United wins – 36
    Manchester United wins – 48
    Draws – 36

Number of cards in this fixture

For such a fierce rivalry this game surprisingly hasn’t seen a lot of yellow or red cards.
Statistics show that there has only been two red cards in the last 27 matches.
It also produces the lowest yellow cards per game amongst any derby (3.26) with the North London derby having the highest (4.15)

FORMER Olympian Jeanette Kwayke has been gracing our screens for the BBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics – and has made history in her blossoming career as a presenter. The ex-Team GB sprinter became the first black boxing presenter in UK history when she lead Channel 5’s coverage of Sam Egginton’s sixth round beatdown on Ashley Theophane in 2020.

Jeanette Kwakye has been behind the mic for BBC Sport during the 2022 Winter Olympics coverage
    Who is Jeanette Kwayke?
The 38-year-old was born in Woodford Green in London on March 20, 1983 and has a younger brother Louis, who was also a keen athlete.
She quickly realised her sporting talent during her teenage years running for Woodford Green with Essex Ladies when she progressed through the junior ranks and turned pro in 2005.
Kwayke graduated from the University of Loughborough, with a degree in Politics and Economics
Jeanette tied knots with Nigerian husband Tokunbo back in 2016.
The couple have two children, one son and a daughter.

    What has she achieved?
Jeanette achieved British championship medals over 100 metres and 200m in 2007.
Her highest achievement came in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games when the athlete became the first British woman in 24 years to make it to the 100m final, where she finished sixth.
Unfotunately, the ex-Olympian was forced to withdraw from competitions in 2010 having suffered from Achilles tendon and knee injuries.
However, Kwayke reached the semi-finals in the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, and became the 100m women’s British champion that same year.
Unfortunately, 2012 was not such a good year.
Jeanette failed to qualify for the London Olympic Games due to another injury but she won the British 60m indoor title to make up for it.
    Personal bests:

    60m – 7.08sec (March 2008)
    100m – 11.14 (August 2008)
    200m 23.11 (July 2007)

But she appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2021 birthday honours list.
    What does she do now?
Since Jeanette declared retirement from the sport, she has presented for Sky Sports, Channel 5 and the BBC which includes an hourly long show on BBC Radio London every Saturday called The Women’s Sports Show.
The former British champion has also covered Olympic sport, European Games and the Commonwealth Games.
Jeanette has worked for Channel 4 and has most recently featured on the One Show.
In 2017, the sprinter published the Children’s book, Femi The Fox which featured on BBC Africa.

The couple then welcomed their third child
    Who is Kell Brook fighting?
Brook will take on bitter foe Amir Khan in Manchester.
With both fighters past their primes, most are viewing the fight as a final cash-out for both Khan and Brook.
But the entertainment value in the build-up has remained high, with both men exchanging barbs ahead of their Manchester clash.
Khan jabbed in their Gloves Are Off episode on Sky Sports that Brook has been obsessed with him for years, while Brook accused his foe of ducking the fight all this time.
‘Special K’ then rejected the opportunity to shake Khan’s hand when the Bolton man offered his peacemaker.
Khan vs Brook will take place in Manchester in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,000, with the main event expected to get underway at 10.30pm UK time. More

What is the difference between horsehair and foam-padded boxing gloves? Khan vs Brook glove dispute explained

BOXING often throws up plenty of disagreement and conflict, especially between some of the sport’s biggest stars on fight week. And this is the case in the Amir Khan vs Kell Brook bout in Manchester.

One particularly contentious part of fight week is glove selection, where both fighters and their respective camps will inspect and choose the gloves they will where on fight night.
Often, this is a smooth process, but as seen with Tyson Fury’s third fight with Deontay Wilder, it’s not always plain-sailing.
Wilder had already thrown accusations about the legality of Fury’s gloves for their second fight in 2020, and the Bronze Bomber wasn’t happy when Fury selected the same style of glove for the trilogy.
Fury famously wears horsehair material gloves, while Wilder has worn foam padding in his throughout his career, and both are legal.
But who do fighters get so antsy over glove selection? SunSport have rounded up all you need to know about one of the key formalities of fight week, and the differences between the two types of glove.

🥊 Khan vs Brook – ring walk time, undercard, TV channel and live stream info for HUGE fight night
What is the difference between horsehair and foam-padded boxing gloves?
It sounds self-explanatory – one gloves has horsehair in it, the other has foam.
But the use of horsehair in gloves, a tradition nearly as old as the sport, has been hotly-contested in recent years.
Horsehair padding provides the glove with less protection to both your hands, and your opponent’s face, therefore it favours those in the ring who consider themselves to be a knockout artist, or someone with really heavy hands.
Horsehair gloves are durable, though they absorb sweat easier, thus wearing the padding down quicker than that of their foam relatives.
Dubbed a ‘puncher’s glove’ horsehair gloves are often used by fighters with a come-forward Mexican style of fighting, or those seeking stoppages in their fights, much like Fury did against Wilder.
Fury wore Paffen branded gloves for both the rematch and the trilogy against Wilder, after he employed Kronk coach SugarHill Steward to train him to KO the American.
Paffen gloves use horsehair padding, unlike the majority of modern boxing gloves which use foam padding.

Following their second fight, in which Wilder was stopped in seven rounds, the Alabama native complained Fury’s gloves had an insufficient amount of padding in them, and that Fury’s punches left a dent in his face.
Wilder usually wears Everlast Powerlock gloves, which uses a PVC foam and latex material for padding.
Foam padded gloves have become more popular over the past two decades, as they keep your hands protected and they absorb shock better than horsehair gloves do.
Once Wilder found out that Fury would be using the same gloves for their trilogy, however, he opted to use Everlast MX instead, a horsehair-foam mix, in order to even the playing field.
Another fighter who was opposed to horsehair gloves was Floyd Mayweather, who often had it written into his fight contracts that his opponents weren’t allowed to use gloves with that type of padding.
Conor McGregor was famously banned from using horsehair for their fight back in 2017.

And Marcos Maidana had to change his gloves from horsehair to foam in 2014 on fight week after Mayweather came away from glove inspection less than impressed with the Argentine’s choice of glove.
Maidana ended up wearing Grant branded gloves, which Mayweather wore for most of his storied career.
Grant gloves are known as the best gloves on the market for those who want their hands to be ultra-protected, and they were perfect for Mayweather, who often suffered with hand injuries.

Conor Gallagher’s parent club is, of course, Chelsea.
So as part of the loan agreement he cannot face his parent club in the Premier League match between Crystal Palace and the Blues.
Premier League rules state that a player cannot play against the club that owns them outright in a top flight match, even if the parent club permits it.
Arsene Wenger is among prominent figures in English football to hit out at the rule, saying it should be axed.
So Gallagher will be watching from the stands as Vieira’s side look to firmly knock the Blues out of the title race.
Chelsea’s game against Palace is not on TV as it is a 3pm kick off, so fans will have to wait until Match of the Day to see how they got on.
