MAX VERSTAPPEN has WON today’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix – opening up a 27 POINT lead over Charles Leclerc.The Dutchman was victorious by some distance in the end in a Red Bull one-two alongside team-mate Sergio Perez.
But it was a painful race for Lewis Hamilton, who finished back in 13th place in Imola.

Hamilton: Of course I can’t win title
Lewis Hamilton has already conceded his mediocre Mercedes has no chance of contesting the title this year.
After finishing 13th at Imola, the Brit said: “A weekend to forget, that is for sure.
“I am out of the championship, for sure.
“There’s no question about that. I will still keep working as hard as I can and pull it back together somehow.”
Sainz: Not the way I wanted to go out
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz says his early crash exit was a ‘tough moment’ to take.
He told Sky Sports: “It’s was very bad, definitely. A tough moment.
“It’s not at all the way I wanted to go out in front of the fans.
“Turn 2 can be bad, but there are always these tough moments in the life of the sportsman and you have to go through them.
“As long as I keep working hard, the good times will come.”
Hamilton’s car ‘undriveable’
Fascinating audio from Mercedes chief Toto Wolff to Lewis Hamilton after his woeful race, finishing in 13th place.
Wolff said to Hamilton: “Sorry for what you had to drive today. I know it was undriveable. This was a terrible race.”
Hamilton replied: “No worries, Toto. Just keep working hard.”
Wolff: “We will come out of this.”

Disaster for Ferrari on the opening lap. Sainz is tagged by Ricciardo and sent into a spin that lands him in the gravel.
His Ferrari is send backwards into the stones and he is stuck. The race steward deploys the safety car.

Aside from being wayyyyy down in 14th, he spent a considerable amount of talking to his chief engineer upon leaving his car.
Normally, he’s out of the car and shoots off, but this time he had plenty to say.

It is damp, but not raining, so likely that all drivers will start on intermediate tyres.

Horner wants to stay in front
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner spoke to Sky Sports ahead of the race.
He said: “We’ve got to go with the track, not make mistakes, and stay in front of Ferrari.”

Nemesis Max Verstappen meanwhile was forced to retire for the second time this campaign.
As for Lewis Hamilton, his season has got off to an awful start when he failed to land a spot on the podium during the Australian Grand Prix earlier on this month.
However, the seven-time Formula 1 Championship winner will be eager to rediscover his phenomenal form at one of the most prestigious tracks on the calendar this weekend.

What is the sprint and how does it change things?
The Sprint is a shortened race around a third of the distance of the tacks which sets the grid for the final race on Sunday.
It was introduced in the calendar last season (Silverstone, Monza, Interlagos) and it added to the excitement of each event.
However, there is a slight change this time around because the top eight drivers during the sprint will score points from eight down to one in the corresponding order.
As opposed to 2021 when only the top three were able to score numbers on the board.
They will the form their grid slots in those positions which only then will the regular points scoring apply.

Following his poor start to the 2022 campaign, Mercedes icon Lewis Hamilton has demanded that his team need a huge response if they want him to obtain an eighth Championship.
Hamilton said: “I will be on Zoom calls with our bosses, and really trying to rally them up,” said Hamilton.

“We have got some improvements that we need to make and we need everyone’s support in doing so.
“It is about making sure we leave no stone unturned, that the hunger is there and we are maximising every moment.
“I will be chasing the people in the wind tunnel, the aerodynamic guys, and just looking at every single area.”
As for Charles Leclerc, the Monegasque driver is excited with the challenge that awaits and he is hoping to capitalise on his 34-point lead.
Leclerc stated: “Obviously we only had the third race, so it’s difficult to think about the Championship but to be honest, we’ve got a very strong car, a reliable car too.
“We’ve always been there, so I hope it continues like this and if it does, the we probably have chances for the Championship which obviously makes me smile.
“It’s great to be back in this position.” More
