Motson was a football commentator for over 50 years
What are the most famous John Motson quotes?
Motson had an ability to add to what was happening on the pitch with his incredible commentary.
He added humour to his analysis, such as when he said: “For those of you watching in black and white, Spurs are in the all-yellow strip.”
His comment came as many households across the UK were watching the match on black and white TV sets rather than in colour.
Here are some other iconic pieces of commentary by him.

    Ronnie Radford
During Hereford’s shock 2-1 win against Newcastle in their 1972 FA Cup replay, Motson delivered one of his most iconic lines.
Motson was only meant to cover the match for a five-minute segment but Ronnie Radford’s famous 30-yard strike meant the clash was promoted to the main game.
He famously remarked on the game: “Oh what a goal! Radford the scorer. Ronnie Radford! And the crowd are on the pitch. What a tremendous shot by Ronnie Radford.”
The game was a catalyst for Motson, as he believed it was a turning point in his career.

Wimbledon win the FA Cup, 1988
Wimbledon caused one of the biggest ever FA Cup final upsets by beating Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool team full of stars.
Lawrie Sanchez scored the winner and Dave Beasant became the first ever goalkeeper to save an FA Cup final penalty at Wembley.
Their shock victory prompted Motson to say: “The Crazy Gang has beaten the Culture Club”.
The tears of Gazza, 1990 World Cup Semi-Final
In his first and only World Cup, Paul Gascogine helped England to their first semi-final for 24 years.
In the game, an overexuberant Gazza mistimed a challenge on West Germany’s Thomas Berthold which saw him receive a yellow card which would have ruled him out of the final.
The card saw an eruption of emotion from the midfielder that was perfectly described by the legendary commentator.
Motty said: “Oh dear. Oh dear me.
“He’s going to be out of the final, if England get there.
“Here is a moment that almost brings tears to his eyes.”
England didn’t make it to the final, losing 4-3 on penalties after extra time.
Gazza’s goal against Scotland, Euro 96
One of England’s most iconic goals from one of their greatest ever players, and Motson just helped add to the moment.
Gascoigne’s incredible solo effort against Scotland, where he dinked the ball over Colin Hendry before firing past Rangers teammate Andy Goram, was perfectly described by Motson.
He summed up the goal by saying “Here’s Gascoigne. Oh brilliant! Oh yes! Oh yes!”
    Germany 1-5 England, 2001
Motty confessed that his favourite match he ever commentated on was England’s 5-1 drubbing of Germany in Munich in September 2001.
The iconic world cup qualifier saw England destroy old rivals Germany on their own patch, and it seemed as though Motson was as excited as the Three Lions fans watching on.
He screamed: “Ohhh, this is getting better and better and better. One, two, three for Michael Owen!”
He went on to exclaim “I think this could be our best victory over Germany since the war”.

TOM CLEVERLEY is a Premier League winning midfielder who has been capped by England. His career has taken a number of twists and turns since his Old Trafford departure in 2015, but what happened to him and where is he now?
Cleverley won the Premier League title during his time with Manchester United
    Who is Tom Cleverley?
Tom Cleverley is a footballer who has previously played for Manchester United and England.
His early years as a professional were spent gaining experience at other clubs, such as Leicester and Watford, before a breakthrough year with Wigan Athletic.
He played regularly during his season with The Latics, helping them avoid relegation at the end of the 2010/11 season.
He returned to Manchester United following the retirement of Paul Scholes in the summer of 2011, making his competitive debut in a 3-2 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
He scored his first Manchester United goal in a 2-1 League Cup win against Newcastle in September 2012, and his first Premier League goal against the same opposition the next month.
He made 22 appearances as United won the 2012/13 Premier league title.
The next season saw a downturn in fortunes for the midfielder after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, as The Red Devils finished 7th and missed out on European football.
Cleverley joined Aston Villa on loan in the 2014/15 season, after falling out of favour. He helped the Birmingham club to their first FA Cup final for 15 years.

However, Villa were easily beaten 4-0 by Arsenal at Wembley, in what proved to his last game for the club.
After joining Everton on a free transfer in 2015 following the expiry of his Manchester United contract, Cleverley struggled with injuries and form, and eventually re-joined Watford in January 2017.
Cleverley played 13 times for England, making his debut against Italy in 2012.
What happened to ex Man Utd midfielder Tom Cleverley?
He soon received regular playing time, and played a vital role in Watford’s midfield as they achieved safety for three consecutive seasons and reached the 2019 FA Cup final.
He played four times in the run to the final, but finished with a runner-up medal once again, with The Hornets losing 6-0 against Manchester City.
After suffering relegation in 2020, Cleverley played a key role in Watford coming straight back up.
They were again relegated in 2022, but Cleverly was named as the new captain ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Unfortunately for Cleverley, he suffered a thigh injury in the warm-up before Watford’s 1-1 draw with Burnley in February 2023.
It had already been an injury plagued season, with the Englishman only playing four times during the campaign.

    Where is Tom Cleverley now?
Cleverley is expected to be out for at least eight weeks with the injury, which is a concern for Watford manager Slaven Bilic as the midfielder’s contract runs out at the end of the 2022/23 season.
It is unknown whether or not he will be offered a new contract at this point. More

Tottenham vs Chelsea: Conte will look to follow Dortmund in doing a job on £107m Enzo Fernandez – Stream, TV channel

CHELSEA face a huge London derby this weekend as they take on Tottenham in a crucial game. The Blues are in torrid form, having won just one game in 2023, and they were beaten by 20th-place Southampton last weekend.

Tottenham are coming off a win over West Ham but have been somewhat inconsistent this season as well.
They currently sit in the Champions League places but will need Harry Kane to keep firing if they are to make a top spot their own.
And matters for the North Londoners will not have been helped by the sickening online racial abuse that Son Heung-min was subjected to after their win over the Hammers.
The visiting Blues spent more than all five of Europe’s top leagues combined in the January window and owner Todd Boehly will be expecting a significant return on his investment.

But there are no signs yet of him losing patience with Graham Potter, despite a run of form that would have almost certainly seen the ex-Brighton boss sacked under the club’s previous ownership.
At £107m, the Premier League’s record signing Enzo Fernandez will be expected to become a star man at Stamford Bridge.
But Spurs will be well aware of how easily the World Cup winner was beaten by Karim Adeyemi for Dortmund’s goal in the Champions League last week.
Former Blues boss Antonio Conte always ensures his teams are nothing if not physically strong and full of fitness.

And he will be looking for the midfield pairing of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp to keep the Argentine quiet.
Meanwhile Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison are likely to retain their places as they look to upstage new Chelsea signing Mykhailo Mudryk on the wing.
    When is Tottenham vs Chelsea?
Chelsea’s visit to Tottenham will take place on Sunday, February 26.
The game will kick off at 1.30pm GMT.
Tottenham vs Chelsea will be held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
What channel is it and can it be live streamed?
Tottenham vs Chelsea will be shown live on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event.

Chelsea are sweating over the fitness of centre-back stalwart Thiago Silva, who missed the loss to Southampton at the weekend.
Reece James also missed the game but could return to action in North London.
Mykhaylo Mudryk may be afforded a start, while Kai Havertz is also likely to come back into the fold.
Christian Romero is still suspended for Tottenham, so Japhet Tanganga could start again for Spurs at the back.
