Why is ‘Cristiano Ronaldo retiring’ trending now?

IT is no secret that Cristiano Ronaldo is nearing the end of his glittering career. The football legend – who has scored more official goals than any player in the sport’s history – is now 39 and in the twilight of his career.Cristiano Ronaldo, 39, has been in the goals for Al Nassr this season – but is nearing the end of his glittering careerCredit: ReutersWhy is ‘Cristiano Ronaldo retiring’ trending?Because of the forward’s age many fans have continued to wonder when Ronaldo will finally hang up his boots. With Euro 2024 this summer, and Ronaldo turning 40 in February 2025, many initially thought this tournament could be the perfect swansong for the Portuguese superstar.Moving to Saudi Arabia, which many see as a ‘retirement league’ despite the host of stars that have flocked to the Gulf on mega wages, has only increased talk that the end is approaching.Ronaldo throwing his support behind the campaign to bring the World Cup to Saudi Arabia also had fans questioning his future.READ MORE CRISTIANO RONALDOHowever, it does not appear likely – at this point – that Ronaldo is going anywhere any time soon.Al-Nassr are still competing at the top of the Saudi Pro League and Ronaldo has been in exceptional form this season. The Manchester United legend has scored an incredible 42 goals in 41 games in all competitions so far this season and is the top scorer in the league. His 29 goals in 24 league matches place him ahead of much younger stars such as Aleksandar Mitrovic, Talisca, Sadio Mane, Karim Benzema and Riyad Mahrez. Most read in FootballCristiano Ronaldo goal record

Chelsea vs Man Utd: Blues looking to bounce back from Burnley draw against Ten Hag’s side – kick-off time, team news

CHELSEA vs Manchester United was once one of the pivotal games in the Premier League season. But it’s a damning reflection of the two clubs that this is a clash of 11th vs 6th place.Chelsea and Manchester United will do battle at Stamford BridgeCredit: RexUnited, to be fair to them, still have a European spot to play for. They are currently eight points off Tottenham in fifth, which could be enough for a Champions League spot. But a win for United would also be important in terms of keeping a grip on a Europa League spot. The Red Devils have a four point lead on West Ham with a game in hand, and Europa League will be the absolute minimum requirement for Sir Jim Ratcliffe as he considers Erik ten Hag’s future.Chelsea, meanwhile, are seriously drifting.A win though, could see them draw level with Newcastle in eighth place – which may be enough for a Europa Conference League spot. For Mauricio Pochettino, this game will be about his team putting in a convincing performance as much as anything. The ex-Spurs boss still doesn’t seem to know his strongest team, and with 10 league games left this season – it’s now about trying to finish this season as strong as possible to build for next season. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSWhat is their form like? Both teams are coming off the back of disastrous performances.Gareth Southgate breaks silence on Man Utd job after major update on Erik Ten Hag’s futureManchester United were battered last time out by Brentford, but somehow escaped with a 1-1 draw.Chelsea also managed to just about grab a draw with relegation-threatened Burnley, despite the Clarets playing much of the game with 10 men.Cole Palmer remains the bright spark of this struggling Chelsea team, with his brace last time out sparing the Blues huge embarrassment. What is the team news and any injuries to worry about?Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof were both substituted with injuries against Brentford as Ten Hag’s defence continued to come under strain. It seemed to be a case of two in two out though, as Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire came off the bench having previously been injured.Jonny Evans could also return to bolster the defence.Mason Mount came off the bench to score what he thought was the winner and could be in line to start this game.Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Anthony Martial, and Altay Bayandir are all out long term.Amad Diallo will return from suspension.Malo Gusto is a doubt for this match having come off with a sore hamstring, Ben Chilwell also returned from England duty with a knock.Wesley Fofans, Romeo Lavia, Reece James, Carney Chukwuemeka, Christopher Nkunku, Levi Colwill, Lesley Ugochukwu, Robert Sanchez and Trevoh Chalobah are all out long-term.Who will be the star men?Cole Palmer has been Chelsea’s standout player this season and bailed them out with a brace against Burnley. The former Manchester City man is one of the few players that have justified their price tag under Todd Boehly’s £1billion revolution and is no doubt Chelsea’s most important player.United seem to be back to their old ways despite going into the international break off the back of a thrilling 4-3 win over Liverpool.Mason Mount was a bright spark in the dismal display against Brentford and could play a crucial role should he start this game. What have the managers said? When Ten Hag was asked if his team were lucky to draw with Brentford, he said: “Yes. I think so. But if you are winning, you shouldn’t give it away. Normally we are a strong side, we are strong in situations and we bring it over the line. It’s very disappointing.”Pochettino meanwhile admitted his side are “missing something” from their “hearts and heads” after their 2-2 draw with Burnley. He said: “That is why I’m so upset and disappointed. It’s more here [in the heart] and here [in the head] than in your legs. It’s about being strong like a group, strong like a team.”We are too slow evolving in this area. That was the key today. The team played well, we had energy. When we have the ball, we go forwards.”But when we didn’t have the ball, we don’t have the same energy. Today, sorry, I am not happy with the performance when we don’t have the ball.”It’s difficult to accept not to win. It was a must-win game to be in a position to attack.”When is Chelsea vs Man Utd?

Brentford vs Man Utd LIVE RESULT: Ajer bags 99th-minute equaliser seconds after Mount’s first goal – latest updates

MANCHESTER UNITED return to Premier League action with a tough trip to Brentford tonight.United are still looking to get into the top four but Brentford are aiming to secure Premier League survival and will be a hard side to break down at home.
    Kick-off time: 8pm GMT
    TV/Stream: Sky Sports Premier League
Brentford XI: Flekken; Zanka, Ajer, Collins; Roerslev, Yarmoliuk, Jensen, Janelt, Lewis-Potter; Toney, Wissa
Man Utd XI: Onana; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Lindelof, Dalot; McTominay, Mainoo; Garnacho, Fernandes, Rashford; Hojlund
    That’s all from Brentford
Brentford and Manchester United drew 1-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium following a dramatic finale.
The Bees dominated throughout the match and missed a raft of chances as they hit the post three times with Ivan Toney, Mathias Jorgensen and Bryan Mbeumo.
Toney also had a goal disallowed after he was marginally caught offside by the linesman and VAR.
United were largely anonymous throughout the match until the sixth minute of stoppage time when they finally put together their best attack of the game.
That was when Casemiro set Mason Mount up for his first ever goal for the Red Devils.
But Brentford wouldn’t be denied and equalised just three minutes later when Toney passed the ball to the incoming Kristoffer Ajer who smashed the back of Andre Onana’s net.
That’s all from us here at SunSport, have a lovely night!

    Copy linkCopiedWord from the ground
If this Manchester United team make the Champions League, it will be as big a travesty following the result of this truly extraordinary game
Mason Mount seemed to have committed the biggest robbery of this or any other Premier League season by scoring deep into stoppage time. And Kristoffer Ajer’s even later equaliser was hardly justice.
Because United were totally outplayed by a brilliant Brentford side still not safe from relegation.
It’s the time of year for miracles, and it is unbelievable that Erik Ten Hag’s side escaped without a defeat that would have put another nail in the coffin of their hopes of finishing in the top four or five.
Before Ajer’s strike, the Bees had hit the woodwork three times, forced fine saves out of Andre Onana, had a goal disallowed for a tight offside and wasted countless other opportunities.
Ten Hag claims not to care about speculation that he will be sacked as part of the changes envisaged by new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team. The prospect of a fat pay-off no doubt lessens the jeopardy.
But any United fan who cares about the club will wonder where it is heading under the Dutchman.

    Copy linkCopiedIvan Toney stands out
Brentford star Ivan Toney put together another impressive performance at the Gtech Community Stadium.
However, Toney only managed an assist after missing a raft of opportunities and hitting the post, while he had a goal chalked off for a marginal offside.
Nevertheless, the striker caused all sorts of problems to Manchester United’s struggling defence.
The Bees have a lot to thank the England international for as it took a lot of doing to set Kristoffer Ajer up for the equaliser during stoppage time.

    Copy linkCopiedIvan Toney reacts
Brentford star Ivan Toney admits the hosts are disappointed with the result after losing so many opportunities and hitting the bar three times.
I feel like it’s points dropped. When you see the stats, we don’t know how we’ve not scored more than one goal.
The chance I’ve missed, we’ve hit the woodwork four times, all the opportunities but it means nothing when you draw the game.
[On his ruled out strike] The gaffer is always saying to me ‘make sure you’re not being a lazy striker, stay onside completely and then you give yourself half a chance’. But I switched off for half a second and it’s a tight call.
We just weren’t clinical enough in front of goal. We’re disappointed in there.Ivan ToneySky Sports

However, Brentford wouldn’t be denied and equalised just three minutes later when Toney passed the ball to the incoming Kristoffer Ajer who smashed the back of Andre Onana’s net.
