Why Liverpool’s Brazilian stars Firmino and Fabinho hold the key to beating Everton in Merseyside derby

JURGEN Klopp’s Liverpool make the short trip across Stanley Park in order to face rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby with a point to prove.Liverpool have got their season up and running with the 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth and then a narrow win over Newcastle.
Frank Lampard takes on Jurgen Klopp this weekend
Liverpool have dominated their Merseyside rivals in the Premier League
There is already a sense of discontent at Everton, especially after the late escape from relegation last season.
It already feels as though they need a big result to kick start their season.
There is no doubt that a win over Liverpool in this match would give Everton the impetus that they need.
But given the confidence flowing through this Liverpool squad again, that will be much easier said than done.

Here are three reasons why Liverpool will continue their dominance over their neighbours, thanks to two Brazilian stars.
Everton’s lack of a fixed attack
Everton are still in desperate need of more firepower.
Just adding Neal Maupay is not enough with Dominic Calvert-Lewin still out injured and the sale of Richarlison in pre-season.
Everton is still a squad with a lack of recognised goal scorers
Everton’s front three are positioned in deeper areas of the pitch with no direct pressure being put on the defensive line or the centre backs
    Most read in Football
So far we have seen summer signing Dwight McNeil playing as part of a fluid front three alongside Anthony Gordon and Demerai Gray.
But while all have their strengths, none are true out-and-out goalscorers, despite Gordon’s habit of finding the back of the net.
It felt very much as though Everton needed to find a player to lead the line and to play more as a fixed striker with McNeil, Gordon and Gray able to play off them.
Maybe Maupay will be that man, if you can look past the amount of chances he misses.

Everton’s attackers are too deep and Liverpool will be content to let them have the ball. Everton will need to make sure that they have runners looking to stretch Liverpool and attack the space they leave behind the defensive line
So far this season Everton have looked bright and lively in the attacking phase with a lot of interplay and interchanging of roles and positions between the front three.
What they have missed is a player who will play right up against the opposition central defenders, either looking to receive with their back to goal or spin and attack the spaces between the defenders and behind the defensive line.
In short, they are missing the exact profile that Calvert-Lewin gives them.

This will play into the hands of the Liverpool defence in this match.
They will be relatively happy for the three mobile attacking players for Everton to have possession of the ball in deeper areas.
The defensive line for Liverpool will be able to squeeze up and make things tight if they want to but it is more likely that they will rely on the relentless pressing and work rate of their midfield in order to take away the spaces that the Everton attacking players will look to play in.

    The resurgence of Roberto Firmino
Earlier this season it seemed as though Roberto Firmino’s time at Liverpool was coming to an end.
Roberto Firmino drops back towards the midfield and effectively empties the space that the striker would normally occupy. Liverpool then deliberately attack these spaces through the aggressive diagonal movements of the two wide forwards
With the Senegalese international Sadio Mane gone, replaced in advance by Luis Diaz, we had seen Liverpool move in the market to sign the Uruguayan international forward Darwin Nunez from Benfica.
With Nunez having been sent off on his Premier League debut for a headbutt on the Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen, we have seen Firmino come back into the setup – and against Bournemouth last weekend he looked back to his best and he played well again against Newcastle.
As we have already discussed in this article, Everton struggle with the lack of a fixed striker.
When Liverpool play with Roberto Firmino as their ‘9’ he will constantly look to drop off of the front line to receive the ball in the midfield areas.

Unlike Everton, Liverpool have a ready-made solution to the movements of Firmino as their wide attackers immediately move into narrow positions to fill the space.
When Liverpool completed the signing last January of the Colombian international forward Diaz he was seen as a dynamic if unpredictable attacking force.
The former Porto forward, however, has quickly established himself as a key attacking player for Liverpool and now we are seeing him take up positions in more central areas than we had previously expected to see from Sadio Mane.
As Firmino comes deep to receive the ball he naturally finds little pockets of space. He then has the creative ability to find the runs of teammates who will look to go beyond the ball and break into the penalty area
With the Everton defence already being tested this season, they will have to find a new series of solutions to the movement and creative ability of Firmino as he drops off and encourages teammates to make attacking runs beyond the ball.
    Liverpool will control the midfield
The decision from Liverpool to sign the Brazilian international Fabinho from AS Monaco in 2018 signalled the start of a period of sustained success at the Merseyside club.
Fabinho, who has been described by Klopp’s assistant Pep Ljinders as the ‘lighthouse’ of the team, is a huge presence for his club both on and off the pitch.
At the start of the season, and especially against Crystal Palace, Fabinho looked out of form. In the match last weekend against Bournemouth though he looked very much back to his best – but again with the Bournemouth caveat.
Fabinho is the controller of the Liverpool midfield and with the front three of Everton, Gordon, McNeil and Gray, looking to play and interchange in deeper areas they will effectively be trying to play in his ‘zone’.
Fabinho also helps Liverpool when they are building from the back. The Brazilian midfielder is extremely press resistant and will receive the ball before turning into space and then driving forward

Fabinho is extremely good at positioning himself to break up counterattacks from the opposition.
He naturally sits at the base of the attacking shape for Liverpool and if the opposition regains possession he is quick to move to block off any potential passing lanes that the opposition may look to use in transition.
Bournemouth look to build their attack on the far side of the pitch they combine with a player moving into the channel to receive the ball in space. It is Fabinho who is first to break out to engage the ball carrier and regain possession
Everton will have to be aware of the positioning of Fabinho and of his ability to almost anticipate danger before moving to close down space.
When they do get opportunities to launch an attacking transition, they will have to play around or past the Brazilian to be effective.
    What does all this mean?
Let’s be realistic – you can’t see Everton getting much out of this one, can you?
Liverpool’s pride was hurt against United and they responded by getting Scott Parker sacked (though his post-match comments probably had as much to do with that as his team shipping nine).
Then they came back from a goal down to get a late, late winner against Newcastle – it feels like they are back at it.

Everton, if they can get through Fabinho and maybe target Trent they might get a couple of shots on goal?

Everton outcast Andre Gomes joins Lille on loan transfer after failing to play a single minute for Lampard this season

EVERTON have shipped out Andre Gomes on loan to Lille. The Portuguese midfielder has not played a single minute of football under Frank Lampard this season, and only featured in the squad for The Toffees 1-1 draw with Leeds.
Andre Gomes suffered a number of injuries throughout his time at EvertonCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd
And following deadline day acquisitions for James Garner and Idrissa Gueye, the Everton engine room was looking cramped.
A statement on Everton’s website confirmed the deal.
They said: “Everton midfielder André Gomes has joined LOSC Lille on loan for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.
“The 29-year-old, who made a permanent move to Goodison Park in the summer of 2019 having impressed during a season-long loan from Barcelona in 2018/19, joins the Ligue 1 outfit after making 100 First-Team appearances for the Blues.

“Portugal international Gomes, who was part of his nation’s European Championship win in 2016, has previously won league titles in his homeland and Spain.”
In his 100 appearances for Everton, Gomes registered two goals and seven assists.
Last season the 29-year-old played 14 times in the Premier League, with most of these coming either from the bench or when the squad suffered a shortage.
Everton were also bolstered in midfield earlier in the window when they brought in Amodou Onana for £32.4million.

It means the deal for Gomes to join the Ligue 1 side sees the two teams effectively swap players for the season.
Everton have brought in a total of eight players during the transfer window, adding quality all over the pitch while also removing a number of players considered deadwood, including ex-Tottenham star Dele Alli. More

Everton are without a win in their first four Premier League games and sit 18th, a place above Wolves.
Lampard is keen to add in midfield and up top before the window closes on Thursday night.
Midfielder Amadou Onana has already arrived at Goodison Park this summer in a £33.5million deal from French club Lille.
But with Andre Gomes potentially leaving before the close of the window Lampard is keen for further additions.

Dendoncker, 27, started Wolves’ first two games of the Prem season but has been used as a substitute in the last two.
Despite their opening offer being knocked back by Bruno Lage’s side, there is confidence a deal can be struck before Thursday’s deadline.

Having sold Richarlison to Tottenham and losing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to another injury, additions are also needed up top.
French striker Neal Maupay has arrived in a £15million deal from Brighton.

Leeds may sell winger Dan James to Tottenham to finance a move for a forward but Spurs have only offered a loan so far.
Whites boss Jesse Marsch worked with the 26-year-old at Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig.
Hwang only joined Wolves last year on an initial loan deal, before the Midlands outfit turned his temporary stay into a permanent switch earlier this year.

“Who wouldn’t want a player like him? I want him, I like him, but in the end we need to understand the market and the situation of the club.
“So we are looking for players from other teams, and we need to expect other teams are looking at our players also.

Chelsea have been pushing to sign him, but Everton have already knocked back four offers.
And now, Lampard has insisted that the winger is in the same bracket as players worth over £100m.
On Friday, he told Sky Sports: “He is our player and remains so, he is in the squad for tomorrow.
“He is a huge player for us, I said it last week, not only is he of great value to the club financially, but more importantly of great value to the squad and to me.

“They haven’t bid £60m so let’s not talk about a number that’s not there.
“I can’t put a number on his value to the club. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with fantastic young players at Derby and Chelsea, seen them develop and become England internationals and Champions League winners, worth triple figures (£100m+) in terms of their personal values.

“Anthony is in that bracket, he’s been a pleasure to work with and he’s ours. He’s an Everton boy, he plays for us and the crowd relate to him.
“It’s understandable that people would be interested in him because of the level of player that he is. The facts remain the same.”

Everton chiefs are eager to keep Gordon at the club for at least one more year.
However, they may be forced into a sale as the winger has made it clear that he wants to leave.
Gordon wants to play in the Champions League as he believes it will help him break into Gareth Southgate’s England squad ahead of this year’s Qatar World Cup.
He dropped a huge transfer hint earlier this week suggesting that a move could be on the cards.
Fans were quick to notice that he had removed all Everton links from his Instagram bio.

How Everton could line up after transfer window with no Dele Alli or Anthony Gordon but three new signings

Miguel Almiron has finally hit some decent form at NewcastleCredit: Getty
That sees the Merseysiders, who only narrowly avoided the drop last term, sit 17th – above the relegation zone because they have scored one more than Wolves.
Things have not been helped by the injury to main striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin leaving Lampard short of strikers.
So now the Goodison club are desperately scrambling to secure some business in the closing days of the summer – with the window closing on September 1.
In order to fund new deals, the sale of Anthony Gordon to Chelsea could prove key.

The Blues are set to go in with yet another bid – thought to be around £60million – for the winger, who has told his boyhood club he wants to leave.
Also heading through the exit door is Dele Alli.
The former Spurs man has failed to get his career reignited in the north-west and a move to Turkey with Besiktas looks set to get over the line.
That would free up space and cash for Everton to bolster their squad.

Newcastle ace Miguel Almiron is said to be near the top of the Toffees’ wishlist.
The Toon could be tempted to sell the former club-record signing for the right place as the Paraguayan has struggled to light up St James’ as many hoped following his £20m 2019 arrival from Atalanta United.
Almiron, 28, could play as one of the wide players in the attack of Lampard’s 4-3-3 with Joao Pedro on the other side.
The Watford ace has been linked with Newcastle throughout the window.
However, a deal is yet to be done between the two clubs and Everton could hijack the move in their pursuit of a forward.
Pedro, 20, can play out wide or through the middle as the central striker.

However, the No9 spot could be filled by Armando Broja, 20, in Calvert-Lewin’s absence.
It is thought Everton will try and negotiate a player-plus-cash transfer with Chelsea for Gordon.
And out-of-favour striker Broja – who excelled at Southampton last season – could be a suitable option.
Another name linked with being included in the Gordon deal is Conor Gallagher.
However, Thomas Tuchel has used the 22-year-old midfielder in all three games already this season so could be tempted to keep him – although there is also interest from West Ham, Newcastle and Crystal Palace.
Almiron and Pedro could displace in-form Demarai Gray and new-boy Dwight McNeil out wide with Broja preferred to Salomon Rondon.
Alex Iwobi has been a standout player for Everton of late and is sure to keep his place in midfield, even with the possible arrival of Gallagher.
Should the Chelsea star not join, though, big-money signing Amadou Onana will be hopeful of nailing down a starting spot soon.
