I’m an ex-Premier League star who retired at 21 – I binged booze and cocaine for 25 years and am surprised I’m alive

AN ex-Premier League star who retired at 21 after binging alcohol and drugs has turned his life around – and said he is surprised to still be alive. Billy Kenny was once one of the most exciting young prospects at Everton and was the best player on the park during the Premier League’s first Merseyside Derby.

But things would quickly unravel for the star and he would make just 17 appearances for the Toffees before being moved on.
Kenny, who had the world at his feet at 19, struggled with drinking amid football’s heavy booze culture that was still around when he made his breakthrough in the early 90s.
Issues with injury, depression and drugs contributed to his downfall.
The star had wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, Billy Kenny Sr, who played at Goodison Park between 1971 and 1974.

Now 49, Kenny told the Liverpool Echo how the dream of playing for Everton quickly became his sole purpose.
He said: “Growing up on Burly [Burlington Street], wanting to play for Everton. That was it. That was all I ever dreamt of. In the ‘80s there were a lot of kids on the street playing football then.
“Back in the ‘80s we only had a ball. Everyone wanted to either play for Everton or Liverpool. As soon as I found out my dad had played for Everton – I must have been about seven – I couldn’t believe it.
“Naturally I wanted to play for them. I think I wanted it worse than any Everton player ever – the desire, the dream, the nightmares – and that derby game everyone goes on about, that was the dream. That was it.”

Kenny would break into Everton’s first team from their reserves and made his debut against Coventry in October 1992.
But his big moment would come in December when he was named man of the match in a game against Liverpool after an influential performance from midfield.
The Reds took the lead in the derby thanks to Mark Wright before goals from Mo Johnston and Peter Beardsley handed Everton local bragging rights.
    GLORY DAYS SHORT LIVED
But the glory would not last long as Kenny quickly fell into a drinking problem and became dogged with injuries which required operations, keeping him on the sidelines and away from the pitch.
He would leave Everton before trying in vain to revive his career at Oldham and Barrow, making only a handful of appearances for both.
Kenny retired at 21 and fell into a spiral over the next two decades.
He said: “I was drinking for 25 years and on cocaine for 25 years as well.
“I am talking absolutely non-stop. I am surprised I am alive. I was just getting up, boom boom boom, two day bender, get my head down and go on a three day bender, two days of sleep, have a Chinese then back on it.”
He added that the “worst bit” was the embarrassment it caused for his mum and dad, with his “ashamed” dad not wanting to leave the house “for years”.
The death of his mother Bella provided the former footballer with the inspiration to turn his life around.
He said that now he is “sober and great” and is reflecting on mistakes he made.

Kenny got to writing during the Covid lockdown and put his incredible story into words as a cautionary tale for younger players.
His work is being turned into a stage play at Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre.

The winger, 22, feels he played a “massive part” in the Merseysiders staying up last season and insists they retain a “massive place in my heart”.
But Everton responded to the Liverpudlian’s departure with just a 54-word summary of his six years at the club.

“My whole life has been at Everton. I grew up in Everton.

“I thought, ‘I’m a 22-year-old lad, I’m not going to handle every situation in life perfectly’.
“But as a club with thousands of people working for them, I think the effort I gave them last year, I was a massive part in keeping the club up.
“Players’ player, manager’s player of the year, so for them to not really show me any credit or thank me for anything it hurt me a little bit.

Juventus trigger Moise Kean’s £25m permanent transfer option days after Everton ace is sent off after 40 seconds

JUVENTUS have reportedly triggered the £25million option to sign Moise Kean from Everton just days after his 40 second red card shame. The 23-year-old forward left the Turin club for the Premier League back in 2019.
Juventus have reportedly triggered the clause to sign Moise Kean permanentlyCredit: Rex
However, the Italian international struggled at Everton and only scored twice in 32 top-flight appearances before he was first shipped out on loan to Paris Saint-Germain.
Kean was then returned to Juventus in August 2021 on a two-year loan deal which included an obligation to buy him for £25m.
Since then he has scored 10 Serie A goals in 55 appearances and his displays have already allegedly convinced the Turin side to sign him long-term.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano backed up an earlier claim from elsewhere by tweeting: “Moise Kean, no longer Everton player as Juventus have already triggered the buy option clause for €28m.

“Full agreement was already in place last year, Kean can be considered 100% Juve player as @romeoagresti reports.”
It comes after Kean was sent off 40 SECONDS after coming on for Juventus in Sunday’s 1-0 loss at Roma.
He kicked out wildly at matchwinner Gianluca Mancini 20 seconds after arriving in the 89th minute – and departed after another 20 seconds.
Kean, 23, had replaced Colombian wideman Juan Cuadrado as Juve piled on the pressure for an equaliser.

And that desperate last-ditch move from boss Max Allegri promptly became even more despairing.
Kean instantly saw red for lashing out at defender Mancini, who had cracked a stunning decider for Jose Mourinho’s Roma on 53 minutes.
Mancini seemed to drag the tumbling Kean in a bizarre tangle as Juventus attacked down the left.
The frontman responded by booting the home hero up the backside.
And although Mancini collapsed in ridiculous fashion, clutching his leg as if shot, Kean had to go.
He has since been hit with a £8,900 fine and received a two-game ban for the red. More

First he will be watched by Toffees chief Sean Dyche.
Everton currently have a lack of attacking options with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ellis Simms and Neal Maupay the only natural No.9’s in the first team.
SunSport recently revealed that the Toffees could decide to cash-in on Calvert-Lewin when the summer transfer window opens due to his recurring injury issues.
The 25-year-old has made just 11 appearances so far this season.

A knee injury kept him out of action at the start of the campaign while a hamstring injury has limited his minutes over the past month.
Calvert-Lewin is understood to be at the top of Newcastle’s transfer wishlist, so should he leave Goodison Park in the summer it will open up a clear path for Cannon to transition into the first team.
Cannon joined the Everton academy in 2012 and signed his first professional contract nine years later.
In August he signed a two-year contract extension meaning his current deal expires in June 2025.

Despite the 4-0 scoreline, Aaron Ramsdale still made sure to do his job and maintain a clean sheet.
The win was a big one in terms of the Premier League as well as it moved the Gunners five points clear of Man City at the top.
But it’s a lot bleaker for the Toffees who remain 18th in the table, one point from safety.
Arsenal could have achieved the feat three and a half weeks ago but were narrowly beaten at Goodison Park in Sean Dyche’s first game as manager.

In fact, the Dubliner was both teams’ first boss – for Everton from 1888-89 and Liverpool from 1892-1896.
Benitez wrote: “When I first arrived at Anfield I was surprised by the people, they were very friendly.
“They tried to help with adapting to the new place from day one.
“Then at Everton, there were a lot of friendly people, but the difference was that some looked at you differently, they couldn’t forget the past with Liverpool.
“I feel at home in Merseyside, my family is completely at home here and that is important.
“The Liverpool fans are still kind and close today, many of the Everton fans know what actually happened and are, let’s say, friendly.
“I can’t say I’m more Liverpool or Everton today. Logically, in six years there were a lot of highs at Liverpool, but I still have good friends amongst the Everton fans.”
