But Southgate reckons 25-year-old Tomori’s good display in the 0-0 Champions League draw at Tottenham led some people to get carried away.
The England manager said: “There are a lot of players playing at a very similar level. We’re looking at a lot of data on that as well.
“Sometimes players making fewer key errors leading to goals in that position can be important.
“Fik had a good game at Tottenham the other day, which was in England and so had more spotlight.

“But there have been quite a few errors this season. The great thing is he is playing at a big club. There are high expectations every time.
“He’s in a group that are close but at the moment we have one or two just ahead of him.”
They include Harry Maguire — despite his lack of recent game time at Manchester United.
World Cup winners Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are Erik ten Hag’s preferred pair.

Southgate added: “We are where we were ahead of the World Cup. It’s not a perfect scenario.
“Harry has two World Cup winners in the team ahead of him. That’s the benchmark.
“He dealt with that brilliantly in Qatar, his performances were exceptional.
“And he had a lot of pressure going into those games because that spotlight was on him.
“He dealt with that exceptionally well and he was without doubt one of our best players in the tournament.”

Raging England fans STRANDED after travel operator cancels trip to Naples for Euro 2024 qualifier at last-minute

ENGLAND fans have been left raging having been stranded after a travel operator cancelled a trip to Naples for the Euro 2024 qualifier at the last minute. The FA’s official travel partner Sportsworld pulled the plug just days before Gareth Southgate’s men are due to face Italy.

Some 2,500 supporters were expected to make the trip for the match on Thursday night, with many now likely to miss out.
Naples is already on high alert after trouble broke out in the southern Italian city when yobs clashed with police.
Footage appeared to show both sets of supporters attacking police.
Travel company Sportsworld emailed fans late on Friday night to confirm that all arrangements had been scrapped.

The firm blamed the violence in Naples as a factor in the decision although it is believed uncertainty from the Italian authorities regarding return flights was the main reason, the Mail on Sunday reports.
Supporters were told in an email, seen by the paper, that: “It is our policy never to cancel any trips, no matter the reason, but we unfortunately have no choice at this late stage.
“We have been planning this trip for months, but the events in Naples this week have certainly impacted the situation.
“We understand you may be angry and will feel let down at this news.
    Most read in Football
“We are also truly disheartened with the outcome and apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.”
England fans have branded the decision as a “disgrace” and have urged the FA to sack Sportsworld as an official travel partner.
Supporters have now been left with having to make frantic last-minute travel arrangements for themselves.
Sportsworld initially emailed fans on Friday afternoon, saying they had not been able to confirm a return flight in time from Naples nor provide a clear transport plan during the day.
It asked fans if they wanted them to find alternative arrangements or cancel the trip.
Nearly 70 per cent of responses are believed to have wanted Sportsworld to proceed with finding other travel arrangements.
The firm then sent another email just after 8pm to confirm the trip had been cancelled.
It told fans they would refund the total cost of the trip, in excess of £350, plus an extra £41 per person, believed to be the cost of the match ticket.
Despite this, some England fans say they are still out of pocket.
Alan Houghton told the paper he was “annoyed and frustrated” and would not be travelling.
He said he has had to cancel a £60 hotel room at Gatwick airport which was booked separately for the night before the flight, with no hope of getting a refund.
Mr Houghton had originally made a booking with a different company, Sports Options, only for them to cancel plans three weeks ago because the authorities in Italy could not make a decision on return flights.
One angry fan wrote on Twitter: “Cancelling the travel for the Italy v England game in Naples with just five days notice – what a disgrace.

“Won’t be using your company again and the FA should pull your official travel partner status.”
When approached by the Mail on Sunday, Sportsworld did not respond to a request for comment on why it took so long to make their decision.

In the England boss’ first squad announcement since the World Cup, Southgate picked 25 stars.
Incredibly, it will be his shortest-ever window with the Three Lions players as they will be on duty for just six days.
They meet up at St George’s Park on Monday, play Italy on Thursday and travel home straight after Sunday’s clash against Ukraine at Wembley.
Southgate agonised over in-form Brentford striker Toney, who under usual circumstances would be a shoo-in.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Uncapped Toney faces a six-month ban from the FA after breaching betting rules.
Yet Southgate was told he can still pick him because he has yet to be formally found guilty and punished.

Toney, 27, boasts 17 goals this term having netted in last night’s 2-0 win at Southampton and Southgate was at Everton on Saturday to watch the Bees’ 1-0 defeat.
Southgate said: “He is playing for his club and he hasn’t been on trial yet or any judgement so I don’t know on what basis we wouldn’t pick him.

“Before the World Cup, Callum Wilson had a brilliant run of form and he has obviously had a little bit of an injury which has inhibited his performances but Ivan has been consistent this season.
“He is playing really well. I like his presence in games and his match at Arsenal was outstanding and he deserves his opportunity.”
The Three Lions chief also stuck with Manchester City right-back Walker, even though the 32-year-old faces a police probe over a video of him drunkenly dropping his trousers and flashing in a Manchester bar.
Despite excelling for Arsenal, there were question marks over White’s involvement following his early return home during Qatar 2022 for personal reasons.

And he has been left out for the two March games in Naples and then at Wembley.
Sterling, meanwhile, misses out due to fitness.
Ollie Watkins, Fikayo Tomori and Brighton duo Levi Colwill and Solly March all pushed hard for a place with strong form in the build-up to the international break.
But the quartet, as well as Trent Alexander-Arnold, have been left disappointed and will stay with their respective clubs.
Southgate added: “It is a complicated situation. I have spoken to Kyle at length and the fact is, as we sit here, is that he is back playing with his club and there is no conclusive evidence to leave him out at this stage.
“You have to be very careful about being the moral judge on things.
“We have had a couple of long conversations and feel we want him with us and that is the right thing to do but with being an England international, there is an even higher bar on how you conduct yourself and what is expected.
“We are not taking those decisions lightly.
“With Ben, it is similar for Ben and Trent.
“We have players ahead of those two and we are blessed with talent.
“Kyle and Tripps were the ones who played during the World Cup and have been consistent while Reece James has come back.”

But the Black Cats stopper could make the full squad for next month’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine, or be taken along to train with the team.
Patterson was being scouted as a potential fourth-choice for the Three Lions even before a calf injury KO’d Crystal Palace keeper Sam Johnstone until April.
The 22-year-old has played in all of Sunderland’s 34 league games so far this season, conceding 38 goals.
The club currently sit 9th in the Championship and four points off the play-offs after back-to-back defeats to Rotherham and Coventry.

Patterson has been at the club since 2018 but last season spent time away on loan at Notts County to develop his skillset.
Southgate has long regarded Jordan Pickford as his number one.
The 28-year-old, who signed a new contract at Everton earlier this week, was the number 1 at the last two World Cups and the 2020 Euros.
But his position could come under increased scrutiny as his fellow English goalies fight for the jersey.

Wales axe Kit Symons as assistant manager for Euro 2024 qualifiers in brutal phone call after World Cup flop

KIT SYMONS has been dumped as Wales assistant manager for the Euro 2024 qualifiers. The ex-Fulham boss, 51, received the news in a telephone call from manager Robert Page this week where he was told his contract would not be renewed.

No2 Symons flanked Page during Wales’ disappointing World Cup 2022 showing in Qatar where the Dragons exited at the group stage.
Page said in September before the winter finals that both Symons and fellow assistant Alan Knill would remain alongside him when he signed his new four-year deal but a U-turn has been performed.
And it is clear that ex-Manchester City and Portsmouth centre-back Symons was not expecting to leave his post.
Instead, SunSport understands Wales boss Page plans to bring in a new coach alongside Knill before their Euro opener against Croatia in Split on March 25.
    Read More on Football
Popular Symons had a successful and long-running association with Wales over the last decade, having been twice assistant to ex-national chief Chris Coleman.
Symons missed the run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals after taking the Fulham job on a full-time basis but, after getting the sack at Craven Cottage, helped Cookie out as an opposition scout.
The pair still work together at Greek Super League club Atromitos in Athens.
Defender Symons, who won 36 international caps, returned for a third coaching spell with his country when Page drafted him in ahead of the Euros finals in the summer of 2021.

Then he combined the two roles for club and country since moving with Coleman to Greece last January.
SunSport also understands Wales’ head of performance Tony Strudwick is not expected to have his contract renewed too.
Strudwick, who worked as a fitness coach under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and is now director of medical at West Brom, was appointed by then Wales manager Ryan Giggs in January 2018.
But it is believed his deal expired at the end of the World Cup finals which saw Wales draw with USA before two defeats to Iran and England in November.
The departures are the latest from the Football Association of Wales with more than 20 key staff leaving in recent months.
SunSport understands there could be a financial aspect to the changes with budget cuts expected as part of a review from the finals. More

Gareth Southgate will STAY as England boss for Euro 2024 as he eyes one more crack at ending Three Lions trophy hoodoo

GARETH SOUTHGATE will stay on as England boss.Southgate is set to give the Football Association the perfect Christmas present by telling them of his decision this week.

The Three Lions boss believed for months the World Cup would be his last tournament in charge and felt the same in the immediate aftermath of the quarter-final defeat by France.
But now he is ready to commit to lead the team to Euro 2024 in Germany.
The news came as Newcastle boss Eddie Howe – who was being linked with the job – said he hoped Southgate would continue with the “magnificent job” he was doing.
The FA will be hugely relieved about Southgate’s change of heart.

He set alarm bells ringing by refusing to commit to seeing out his contract after the France defeat.
Southgate, 52, said he needed time to think about whether he had the energy for another tournament campaign.
Although England players told him that they wanted him to stay, he remained in two minds.
Southgate was hurt by criticism during the disastrous Nations League campaign, especially the hostile reaction from fans to the 4-0 home defeat by Hungary in June.

He had to be talked out of publicly announcing his intention to quit after the World Cup but still thought he would go, no matter what happened in Qatar.
Now, after a week of soul-searching, Southgate has changed his mind and wants one more crack at leading England to tournament glory.

Although the Three Lions went out in the last eight after reaching the semi-finals in Russia and last year’s final of the Euros, Southgate believes the team showed real signs of progress.
He was delighted by the performance of young players like Jude Bellingham and is excited by what they could do in the future.
And he feels that the public were more accepting of the France defeat than of previous disappointments because England had played better and more on the front foot.
It is understood Southgate met assistant Steve Holland on Friday and the pair agreed they would continue the job they began in 2016.
Howe is among the England fans who will be delighted by the news.
Howe, speaking after Newcastle’s 2-1 friendly win over Spanish side Rayo Vallecano, said: “I hope Gareth continues and carries on the magnificent job he has done – that is my wish for him – my only focus Is Newcastle United.

“I thought England were really unlucky and in my opinion they were the better team against France but sometimes the better team doesn’t win.
