Watch ‘heartbroken’ James Corden’s passionate speech about European Super League on Late Late Show in full

JAMES CORDEN has delivered a rousing rebuttal of the ‘greed’ behind the breakaway European Super League. The presenter and West Ham fan, 42, slammed the proposal that would see 12 clubs form their own competition to supersede the Champions League.
Read James Corden’s anti-European Super League speech in full below

Speaking on The Late Late Show, Corden explained to his American audience the ‘devastation’ that the plans would cause across Europe.
He explained: “The truth is that this whole thing, making this move, these teams, these owners are killing.
“They will kill hundreds of other football teams that compete with them and have competed with them over the years, disregarding the fanbases of those teams and of their own teams who are also devastated.
“Because these aren’t small teams. You will have heard of AC Milan, Liverpool, Barcelona… These are the biggest teams in the world and this decision is monumental.
“And I’m heartbroken by it. Genuinely heartbroken. Because the owners of these teams have displayed the worst kind of greed I’ve ever seen in sport.
“Many football teams in Britain are over 100 years old and they were started by working-class people; dock workers, builders… built by and for the communities that they play in. They are not franchises.
“These new billionaire owners have in the past 10-15 years have been buying up all the top teams and slowly but surely moved them away from the communities and foundations on which these teams were built.
“It’s always niggled at the back of fans’ minds whether these owners truly understood what it meant to be part of their club, to be part of its history and if they could be true and honourable custodians of their futures.

“Yesterday the realisation hit every football fan hard. It’s not just that they don’t understand football or what it means to be a fan but it’s simply the realisation that they don’t care.
“If anything they look at the historical fanbases with disdain. They want a closed shop where the rich get richer, they don’t care if the teams that are below them struggle.
“They’ll take that money regardless of performances and regardless of success on the pitch. It’s disgraceful.”
Corden spoke with his Late Late Show co-presenters about how the move was as if a collection of actors decided they should be nominated for Oscars every year – ‘regardless of what films they’re in’.
Also abhorrent to the Uxbridge-born writer was the timing of the announcement, in the midst of a devastating pandemic.
Corden asserted: “The statement from the 12 owners and why they’ve announced such a jaw-dropping plan, during the season where there’s still seven games to go, is disgusting.
“Three times they mention the pandemic as a reason to do this. A pandemic that has been catastrophic for clubs and communities across Britain.
“It’s hard to express how much these communities rely on football, not just financially which is considerable but also as a focal point of a town’s hopes and dreams. That’s what it is.

“And these dreams have just been shattered, not just in Britain but all across Europe.
“And the reason these dreams have been shattered and discarded is so that a group of billionaires can buy themselves a bigger boat. Or a second boat.
He added: “Don’t forget the people that did this, it’s those owners in a decade’s time when the Super League’s thriving and I’m sure it’s got great goals and all those things, and these owners will think that it’s all water under the bridge.
“Don’t ever forget that it was those owners, they took something so pure and so beautiful and they beat the love and the joy out of it. And they did it for money. They just did it for money and it’s disgusting.”

“Football is a working class game where anyone can beat anyone on their day and it’s that that makes it incredible, that’s made it the global force that it is today.
“A few years ago Leicester City, many of you would never have heard of Leicester City, won the Premier League. It was the most incredible thing to witness.
“It gave every fan hope. They have as many Premier League titles as Liverpool, they have one more than Tottenham and they’re not invited into this rich boys’ clique because the wealthy teams got together to try to stop that achievement ever happening again. And that isn’t sport.
“And if this happens, and unfortunately I really do think it will, I don’t want to be overdramatic but I do think it’s the end of the sport that we love. It truly is.
“I don’t think there’s anything we can do about it, but what we can do and I hope as fans that we will remember the names of these owners. How they hid behind a devastating pandemic as a reason to announce this while a season is being played.
“They didn’t consult a single player, a single manager, they certainly did not consult the fans of their teams.
“They bought into a sport that so many of us live for at 3pm on a Saturday. They took it and they are going to crush it without ever thinking of the damage that’s being done.
“Don’t forget the people that did this, it’s those owners in a decade’s time when the Super League’s thriving and I’m sure it’s got great goals and all those things, and these owners will think that it’s all water under the bridge.

When will the European Super League start and how will it work?

FOOTBALL has been stunned by the announcement of a European Super League.12 clubs, including England’s Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Man City have declared their intention to create a new competition in defiance of Uefa.
12 clubs have announced a controversial European Super League
But how would it work and when could it start?
Here’s all you need to know.
When will the European Super League start?
The European Super League’s founding statement declared that the inaugural season “is intended to commence as soon as practicable”.
Florentino Perez, president of both Real Madrid and the Super League, elaborated on that in an interview with Spanish TV show El Chiringuito.
He said: “If there is an agreement we will start next season.
“We can wait a year longer if there is no agreement with Uefa.”
Florentino Perez wants the European Super League to start in August, if an agreement can be reachedCredit: El Chiringuito TV
One of Perez’s main criticisms of Uefa during the interview was that their changes to the Champions League will not be implemented until 2024, suggesting whatever happens the intention is for the Super League to start sooner rather than later.
He said: “Uefa presented a format for the Champions League which nobody understands, to start in 2024.
“And in 2024 we are dead.”

How will the European Super League work?
The idea is for the Super League to have 20 clubs – 15 founder members who cannot be relegated and five qualifying teams.
All matches will be played in midweek slots, with the clubs insistent they will be able to continue to play in their domestic leagues and “preserve the traditional domestic match calendar which remains at the heart of the club game”.
The 20 clubs will be split into two groups of 10, playing 18 games – nine home and nine away – with the top three in each group qualifying automatically for the last eight knock-out stage.
Teams finishing fourth and fifth in each group will then play off to fill the final two knock-out slots, with the ties played over two legs apart from a one-off final “which will be staged as a single fixture at a neutral venue”. More

What is the European Super League, which clubs have signed up, how will it work & will Champions League still exist?

THE Premier League has been rocked after members of its ‘Big Six’ declared their intent to join a European Super League.Manchester United, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea are all involved in the plot, which has been blasted by Gary Neville as “criminal”.

Fans will be keen to know what is being laid out, how it would work and the impact any breakaway would have.
SunSport explains the plans, as they stand – and the hurdles that have to be overcome:
What is the European Super League?
A 20-team breakaway league with matches to be played midweek and an end of season play-off to determine the winners, with a provisional kick-off from the start of the 2022-23 season.
In addition to the 15 founding clubs, who cannot be relegated from the closed-shop elite, five clubs will be entitled to qualify each season.
Which clubs would play in it?
England will have the largest contingent, with Liverpool and United joined by Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs.
Among the remaining 12 ‘founder members’, Spain would supply Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona as well as Juventus, Inter and AC Milan from Italy.
It is unclear how the five additional teams will be selected each year.
What would be the format of the league?
It is envisaged that the teams will play each other home and away in a midweek league, with four from each group involved in the end of season play-offs.
Will they play in their domestic leagues?
That’s the plan. At least, for now.
How does it all fit in to a standard football season?
    That is the big question.
The Premier League’s 38-game season is already squeezed into a 34-week window and there would now be an EXTRA 34 games for each of the five selected Prem teams to fit in.
Reducing the Prem to 18 clubs, as envisaged in Project Big Picture – an element backed by all the Big Six – would create some wriggle room, as would scrapping the League Cup.
But Prem sides are mandated to play in the FA Cup.

Is there room for any other games?
Other than an early start and a late finish, no.
Until 2024-25, when the new international match calendar – still being worked on by Fifa – comes into operation.
One plan that gained support was for three four-game international windows – in November, March and June – each year, opening up the entire autumn part of the season for extra club matches.
How much would clubs be paid?
A huge £3.1billion fund was being formulated by the competition’s organisers, which was to be split between the 15 founder clubs.
The payment, ranging from £89m to £310m, was reportedly described as an ‘infrastructure grant’ to spend on stadiums, training facilities and account for lost pandemic revenue.
The Glazers own Man Utd, one of the teams touted as potential members
What would a European Super League mean for the Champions League?
Curtains – which is why Uefa will fight tooth and nail to kill the plot stone dead.
If Europe’s biggest 18 clubs go it alone, the Champions League – let alone the Europa League – will plummet in commercial value, devastating European football’s economic model.
Will the Champions League still exist?
This was the unknown when the plans were announced, but what was clear is that the 12 rebel clubs – and any others who joined the Super League – would not be playing in it.
It is also not known whether the Champions League or domestic leagues would be used to decide the five qualifiers for the European Super League.
What would be the impact on the Premier League?
Not so much in the immediate term – but significant in the longer term.
The “top four” race will be rendered redundant if there is a closed shop Super League, which will have an impact on future TV rights sales, although there will still be the appeal of the Big Six playing their domestic matches.
But the financial disparity between the elite and the rest will become a gaping chasm that will make the Prem utterly uncompetitive – unless the big boys prioritise the new European Premier League and play shadow sides at home, which, of course, will make the Prem even less appealing to the broadcasters.
This is arguably the best XI of players who as it stands would play in the European Super League

    Will it really go ahead?
On Sunday, Uefa, the English Football Association, the Premier League, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), LaLiga, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and Lega Serie A released a joint statement condemning the plans.
Should the domestic associations not give their blessing for clubs to join the league, they could be booted out of all domestic competitions.
Clubs have also been warned that their players could be ineligible for international football if they join a breakaway league.
Uefa are expected to confirm the details of the new-look Champions League to take effect from the 2024-25 season in the next few months.
On Monday, Uefa approved their new 36-team Champions League format which starts in 2024.

And now Inter Miami owner Becks has added his voice to the ever growing list of defenders of our national sport.

Beckham’s former team-mate Gary Neville has been widely praised for the way he has repeatedly attacked the plans.
He labelled Man Utd owner Joel Glazer a ‘scaveneger’.
And the ex-right-back also called for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final between Tottenham and Man City to be cancelled because both teams ‘don’t care’.

Neville also clashed with Jurgen Klopp after the Liverpool boss responded to the pundit’s criticism of the Anfield club.
And Reds legend Jamie Carragher believes owner John Henry will be driven out if Klopp resigns over European Super League plans.

Everton release damning statement slamming ‘conspiring’ Prem Big Six for ‘betraying’ fans over European Super League

EVERTON have released a damning statement slamming the ‘preposterously arrogant’ Premier League ‘Big Six’ attempting to break away as part of a European Super League. The plans, announced on Sunday, have been met by derision far and wide, with Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher having slated them on Monday Night Football – and PM Boris Johnson promising to fight the proposals.

And Everton have added their strong voice to the matter.
An official club statement from their board of directors reads: “Everton is saddened and disappointed to see proposals of a breakaway league pushed forward by six clubs.
“Six clubs acting entirely in their own interests.
“Six clubs tarnishing the reputation of our league and the game.
“Six clubs choosing to disrespect every other club with whom they sit around the Premier League table.
“Six clubs taking for granted and even betraying the majority of football supporters across our country and beyond.
“At this time of national and international crisis – and a defining period for our game – clubs should be working together collaboratively with the ideals of our game and its supporters uppermost.
“Instead, these clubs have been secretly conspiring to break away from a football pyramid that has served them so well.

“And in that Pyramid Everton salutes EVERY club, be it Leicester City, Accrington Stanley, Gillingham, Lincoln City, Morecambe, Southend United, Notts County and the rest who have, with their very being, enriched the lives of their supporters throughout the game’s history. And vice versa.
“The self-proclaimed Super Six appear intent on disenfranchising supporters across the game – including their own – by putting the very structure that underpins the game we love under threat.
“The backlash is understandable and deserved – and has to be listened to.
“This preposterous arrogance is not wanted anywhere in football outside of the clubs that have drafted this plan.
“On behalf of everyone associated with Everton, we respectfully ask that the proposals are immediately withdrawn and that the private meetings and subversive practises that have brought our beautiful game to possibly its lowest ever position in terms of trust end now.
“Finally we would ask the owners, chairmen, and Board members of the six clubs to remember the privileged position they hold – not only as custodians of their clubs but also custodians of the game. The responsibility they carry should be taken seriously.
“We urge them all to consider what they wish their legacy to be.”

The greedy plans of the ‘Big Six’ have even been met by royal disapproval.
Prince William last night spoke of the ‘damage’ the proposals would do to the ‘entire football community’.
The keen Aston Villa fan wrote: “Now, more than ever, we must protect the entire football community – from the top level to the grassroots – and the values of competition and fairness at its core.
“I share the concerns of fans about the proposed Super League and the damage it risks causing to the game we love.”

European Super League ‘cracks appearing with English club considering pulling OUT’ amid fan backlash and showdown talks

CRACKS are ‘starting to appear’ in the European Super League plans with one Premier League club ‘seriously considering pulling out’ after the furious fan backlash.Meanwhile, Liverpool have cancelled an all-staff meeting scheduled for Tuesday to explain the club’s ESL plans.

The Reds were joined by Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and the two Manchester clubs signing up for the new closed-shop breakaway franchise.
As founding members, they would be guaranteed involvement every season for 23 years with huge financial gain while abandoning the English game.
Supporters, pundits and now footballers, including Liverpool’s James Milner, have made their feelings clear that they do not want the Super League to go ahead – with the 12 owners chasing more money.
The reaction has been passionate and clear – the clubs have got the message this is not what the overwhelmingly vast majority want, with banners and demonstrations set to continue outside grounds for the foreseeable future.
Furious fans protested outside the Prem’s ‘Big Six’ clubs
Fans from the six clubs also joined forces to condemn the proposals
FA President Prince William voiced his concern at the proposals
James Milner spoke out against the European Super League after Liverpool’s draw
The remaining ‘angry and dismayed’ 14 Premier League clubs are meeting today to discuss how to deal with the other six – and could even order them to quit the division.
And now, according to the Daily Mail, seeds of doubt are creeping in with two of the six top-flight English rebels ‘close to losing their nerve’.
It is thought their support of the proposed ESL is ‘wavering’ – and for one of them, that may mean a U-turn in their plans.

Politico editor Alex Wickham said one of the group may try and get out of the deal, accusing breakaway leaders Liverpool and United of ‘lying to them and f***ing up’.
As revealed by SunSport, Chelsea players were left shocked, gutted and confused when they were told the club was part of the Dirty Dozen.
Blues chairman Bruce Buck called a meeting of the players in an attempt to explain why they were signing up to the European Super League.
But the news did not go down well with the squad, with individuals concerned about the damage it threatens to do to the game.
Those fears only grew when it became clear Uefa were threatening to throw them out of the Champions League.
However, one board member from the six told Sky Sports News on Monday: “To be honest, they are not that worried about PR.

“Our primary job is to maximise our revenues and profits. The wider good of the game is a secondary concern.”
Liverpool were due to stage a Zoom call with the owners, Fenway Sports Group, this morning to update and inform the club’s employees about the Super League plans.
But This Is Anfield say this meeting was canned soon after full-time of last night’s 1-1 draw at Leeds.
Chief executive Billy Hogan sent an email to staff on Monday to begin to explain the club’s actions – which have drawn particular criticism from Sky Sports pair Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville.
The email said: “We know that this announcement has provoked strong feelings within the game and elsewhere but we believe this decision is in the best long-term interests of Liverpool Football Club.
“Importantly, this is the beginning of the journey and we can now start an engagement process with you, supporters and key stakeholders to help shape this process in the right way.
“There is still much more information to come in due course.
“I will keep you updated as we progress on this journey and discuss further on our Town Hall tomorrow.”

Fans massively against ESLA YOUGOV snap poll has revealed football fans are overwhelmingly against the proposed European Super League, see it is a huge money grab and will not watch the matches if it goes ahead…
    · 79 per cent of football fans oppose the creation of European Super League, 68 per cent strongly oppose it; just 14 per cent support it
    · Half of football fans (51 per cent) think ‘big six’ European Super League clubs should be kicked out of the Premier League; 55 per cent think they should face financial penalties; 32 per cent think they should face points deductions; 22 per cent think they should be stripped of existing domestic titles; only 10 per cent think there should be no punishments whatsoever
    · 75 per cent say they are not interested in watching the ESL when it begins
    · Just 3 per cent say the formation of ESL was driven by fans’ desire; 89 per cent say it was driven more by financial gain
    · 75 per cent say clubs down the football pyramid will suffer financially from the ESL formation; only 7 per cent think they will benefit
    · 73 per cent think football club owners should face punishments; 51 per cent want to see clubs themselves face punishments

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, writing in The Sun, assured English football fans he will do all in his power to stop the Super League from going ahead.
He said: “You only need a pulse to know that football is not a brand or a product. In fact it’s so much more than even a sport.
“A year of empty stadiums has reminded us all that football without fans is an altogether more anaemic spectacle.
“It is your game – and you can rest assured that I’m going to do everything I can to give this ludicrous plan a straight red.”
And the PM reiterated his promise by threatening new laws surrounding the plot – and backed Premier League bosses to kick the so-called ‘Big Six’ out it they want to.
Johnson vowed to do all he could to stop it from going ahead in a meeting with top footie bosses.
Downing Street said today the PM ‘expressed his solidarity with football fans and agreed they must always be at the heart of any decisions about the future of the game’.
The PM urged clubs who were reported to be wobbling to pull back from the brink.
No10 said: “The Prime Minister confirmed the government will not stand by while a small handful of owners create a closed shop.
“He was clear that no action is off the table and the government is exploring every possibility, including legislative options, to ensure these proposals are stopped.”

Angry fans fly ‘Say No To Super League’ banner over Leeds clash with Liverpool as Milner says ‘I hope it doesn’t happen’

LIVERPOOL’S trip to Leeds was overshadowed by a number of fan protests over the European Super League – including a plane banner flown over Elland Road denouncing the project. After the Reds signed up to the hugely controversial plan, even midfielder James Milner stated his discontent with it.

A crowd of Leeds fans turned up outside Elland Road on Monday night to make their voice heard.
Several chants in protest at the ESL were heard before some even attempted to obstruct the Liverpool team bus as it arrived at the ground.
A number of banners were also on display at Anfield before the game, which finished 1-1.
Leeds players donned ‘Earn It’ shirts referring to the Champions League while warming up before the flyover during the match.
It is not known who was behind the banner, that read ‘Say No To Super League’ and was picked up by television cameras as the action unfolded.
Speaking after the draw, former Whites player and Leeds native Milner became one of the few players to speak against the ESL.

The Liverpool star, 35, told Sky Sports: “I don’t like it and hopefully it does not happen.
“I can only say my view, I don’t like it and hopefully it doesn’t happen. I can imagine what has been said about it and I probably agree with a lot of it.”
Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Ander Herrera has also voiced his unhappiness, although the French club have not signed up.
One previous critic of the idea was Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who stressed post-game that he and his team have ‘nothing to do’ with the club’s commitment to the ESL.
The German, 53, stated: “The team has nothing to do with it and I have not really anything to do with it but people treat us like we do.
“Leeds supporters came here today before the game and were shouting at us. In the city when we had a walk this afternoon people were shouting at us.

City are aiming for a fourth final victory in a row while Spurs hope to end a 13-year wait for any trophy.
Neville, though, believes their plans to join the European Super League and therefore abandon English domestic football should be punished.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the passionate ex-England defender said: “You have to act here. It is a big attack.
“The idea that something happens… cancel the game on Sunday, City vs Spurs.
“Who cares about it? They don’t care about it.
“Cancel it. They don’t care about English football.
“Why should they play in the EFL Cup?
“Things like that, for me now, have to be on the table because they have to know they can’t bully their way through everybody in this country.
“They are bullying the 14 clubs, the EFL, the FA and they run this country – it is the six owners.”

City and Spurs are joined by Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal in agreeing to join the franchise-style, closed-shop Super League.
Furious fans took to stadiums across the country on Monday to voice their anger at the clubs’ owners with more protests planned.
And Neville also believes the showdown between United and Liverpool on May 1 is now meaningless.
If there was no pandemic and restrictions, he believes a mass march uniting the two sets of rival fans would have taken place.
Neville added: “All the emotions in the last 24 hours have been going through my head. I think of the Manchester United versus Liverpool game in two weeks.
“If it wasn’t for Covid, you’d mobilise a march – you’d bring all Manchester United and Liverpool fans together and march on that stadium.”
Neville also clashed with Jurgen Klopp after the Liverpool boss responded to the pundit’s criticism of the Anfield club while Reds legend Jamie Carragher believes owner John Henry will be driven out if Klopp resigns over European Super League plans.
