All SIX Premier league ‘giants’ pull out of European Super League as Liverpool, Man Utd and Spurs finally quit

ALL six English clubs have now quit the hated European Super League in a massive victory for fan power.Chelsea were the first to break ranks after fans gathered outside their Stamford Bridge ground to voice their anger, with Manchester City following soon after.

There was jubilation when fans heard the decision had been taken to quit
Then Spurs, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal all announced they were quitting the project hours later.
Meanwhile the Premier League held a crisis meeting without the ‘Big Six’, where the remaining 14 clubs “unanimously and vigorously rejected the plans” for the rebel eague.
Fan power across the football world has pushed the loathed European Super League to the brink of collapse as reports from Italy said Inter Milan have joined the six English clubs in abandoning the project.
Late last night the European Super League confirmed the plans had been suspended.
The league is now considering the “most appropriate steps to reshape the project, always having in mind our goals of offering fans the best experience possible”, it said in a statement.
    THEY THINK IT’S ALL OVER
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was reportedly left “shaken” by the fury directed at the Premier League’s rebels.
He told supporters the club “regret the anxiety and upset caused by the ESL proposal.”
In a statement, he added: “We felt it was important that our club participated in the development of a possible new structure that sought to better ensure financial fair play and financial sustainability whilst delivering significantly increased support for the wider football pyramid.“We believe that we should never stand still and that the sport should constantly review competitions and governance to ensure the game we all love continues to evolve and excite fans around the world.“We should like to thank all those supporters who presented their considered opinions.”

Spurs’ north London rivals Arsenal also apologised for the “distress” caused by the plan and told fans “we have heard you” as the club also confirmed it was quitting.
“The last few days have shown us yet again the depth of feeling our supporters around the world have for this great club and the game we love,” the board said in a statement.
“We needed no reminding of this but the response from supporters in recent days has given us time for further reflection and deep thought.
“As a result of listening to you and the wider football community over recent days we are withdrawing from the proposed Super League. We made a mistake, and we apologise for it.”

Manchester United said it will not be participating in the European Super League after listening “carefully to the reaction from our fans, the UK government and other key stakeholders”.
Liverpool also issued a statement confirming its “involvement in proposed plans to form a European Super League has been discontinued”.
The club said in recent days it had received “valuable contributions” on the issue.
None of the clubs involved appears to have anticipated the level of anger from supporters across the country and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was reportedly “blindsided” by the fans’ response.
The Blues said having had “time to consider the matter fully and have decided that our continued participation in these plans would not be in the best interests of the Club, our supporters or the wider football community”.

The proposed European Super League appeared to unite football fans in fury immediately after it was announced on Sunday night.
At one stage the Prime Minister even proposed using a new law to block the move.
He praised Chelsea and Man City for their “absolutely right decision” and called on the four remaining English clubs to “follow their lead”.
Mr Johnson had earlier branded the ESL a cartel saying its “not right” to rob British fans of their football – saying “be in no doubt that we don’t support it”.
Massive protests by Chelsea supporters outside Stamford Bridge last night delayed their game against Brighton.
Marcus Rashford tweeted out a poignant image of Sir Matt Busby’s famous words: ‘Football is nothing without fans’
The game was delayed for 15 minutes after protesting fans descended on the stadium and blocked the team buses.
Chelsea legend Petr Cech begged fans let the bus through but his pleas fell on deaf ears with some furious supporters screaming he was a “traitor”.
A huge roar went up when it was announced that Chelsea were quitting just before kick-off.
Brighton players including Danny Welbeck also warmed up in protest tops.
One delighted protester, Paul Greeves, 29, said: “I love this club, but the way they’ve acted has been a joke.
“This protest really shows what fan power can do. We’re united as one club. All fans have come together and it’s great to see.
“I can’t believe we have managed to force these clubs to act. It is unheard of in this day and age. Usually they are just all about the money.”
Sources claimed Chelsea and Man City had been reluctant to sign up in the first place.
With public fury clear, broadcasters including Amazon Prime, Sky and BT hastily distanced themselves from the Super League project.
    The Sun Says
THE howl of rage was deafening. And it has worked.
Grasping billionaires will not be allowed to destroy our national sport.Fans — backed by a robust Tory Government, by Prince William, by every sane voice in the land — united in uproar, either abandoning the “big six” clubs they have supported all their lives or protesting outside their stadiums.
Slowly but surely managers and players, blindsided like everyone else at the weekend, began to rise up. This cold-blooded coup by a megarich cartel has been a direct attack on them too.
Even potential TV broadcasters of the “European Super League” turned their guns on it. We don’t blame them. Who, long-term, would pay to watch a league where nothing is at stake?
Where the same founder members effectively play out stale friendlies again and again?
But the tycoons’ foolish misconception is a lesser point. For this has been a simple issue of right and wrong.
Avaricious men with no connection to, or feel for, the beautiful game must not steal it from the millions of ordinary people who make it what it is.
The clubs are listening. Chelsea, Man City, Barcelona and Atletico pulled the plug. Others were considering their options. Man United’s chief resigned.
The huge threat from Boris Johnson’s “legislative bomb” was bad enough.
But even soulless owners driven solely by profit baulk if they sense their plan is a financial disaster. As fans desert their clubs, buy no merchandise, cancel season tickets and end their TV subscriptions for the Prem, those greedy fools are finally realising what a shameful mistake they have made.
What a hornets’ nest they stirred up trying to line their pockets by tearing the heart out of Britain’s national game.
It must not happen. Not now. Not ever.

Ed Woodward’s shock departure after 16 years at Old Trafford was said to have been in protest against the ESL.
Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin this week called Woodward and his fellow rebel club leaders “snakes and liars”.
Andrea Agnelli, president of Juventus, one of three Italian sides which were joining the ESL, also resigned.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta last night backtracked, claiming its members will decide.
He said: “Barcelona will not join the Super League until our socios vote for it. It’s their club, so it’s their decision.”
There were also reports that Atletico Madrid were preparing to withdraw, leaving the fledgling project in tatters.
Fans could also be handed powers to block teams joining any new league.
Manchester United ace Marcus Rashford, who forced ministers into a U-turn over free school meals last year, issued a thinly-veiled warning to his club’s US owners.

The striker, 23, tweeted a poignant image of Red Devils hero Sir Matt Busby’s famous words: “Football is nothing without fans.”
Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson also piled in, summoning all his fellow Premier League captains to an emergency meeting last night.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had told fellow Premier League executives the breakaway plot had been driven by a desire for “more respect and for more money” from European soccer chiefs.
But he added the backlash was “not what I wanted, or expected”.
The ESL would have seen United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool — and 14 other top European teams sharing a £4.6billion pot in a rival to the current Champions League.

But it would be a “closed shop” with no relegation for the 12 founder members.
The 14 Premier League clubs not involved in the breakaway competition said they “unanimously and vigorously rejected” the plans.
Supporters have been furious since the plans for the new league were announced on Sunday and condemned the move as shameful.
Last night they began reacting to news that their clubs are to ditch the plans after all.
Spurs fan George Martin, 28, said: “It was a dumb idea to begin with. How dare these clubs think they can take over the game like this, it’s a disgrace.
“I’ve supported Spurs all my life and I was close to leaving them over this, so I am glad these clubs have seen sense and decided against it.”
Liverpool fan Ross Maietta, 72, said: “I’ve supported this great club for more than 50 years.
“I’ve seen them win multiple European Cups but I feared after this announcement it’d be the end for me.

“But we have all managed to put our differences aside and come together for this cause.
“We say no to the Super League, now and forever. This would destroy football and I am not prepared to let that happen.”
And Arsenal fan Luke Gilles, 46, said: “My club is badly run. It is being run into the ground and I felt as though there was nothing I could do about it.
“This proves how much power fans have and I sincerely hope we can stick together in this and continue to fight for what is right for our clubs.”
Aston Villa fan Craig Bradley called for the teams involved to be kicked out of the Premier League.

Burnley fan Lorna Smith called it “a terrible idea and one that is purely motivated by greed”.
In America, British talk show host James Corden told viewers: “Many teams were started by working-class people, dock workers, builders… they were built by and for the communities that they play in. They are not franchises.
“Anyone can beat anyone on their day and it’s that that makes it incredible.
“Billionaire owners took something so pure and so beautiful and they beat the love and the joy out of it. And they did it for money.”
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola appeared to criticise the plans even before his team quit.
He said: “It is not a sport where success is already guaranteed, where it doesn’t matter when you lose.

“I would love the president of this committee to explain to the whole world why they took the decision.
“I don’t know why these specific teams have been selected.
“And it’s not fair if one team fights to make it to the top and then cannot qualify because success is just guaranteed for a few clubs.”

Chelsea verdict: Subdued Blues distracted by the Euro Super League.. how are they meant to play on amid chaos off field?

SO we now know Chelsea have pulled out of the European Super League. As fans gathered outside to protest the controversial breakaway proposal, and then celebrated as news of its demise filtered through, what must Chelsea’s stars have been thinking?
Chelsea performed dismally on a unique night at Stamford BridgeCredit: Andy Hooper-The Daily Mail
What did they know? What had they been told before this crucial clash with Brighton as protestors attempted to stop their bus rolling into Stamford Bridge? Probably not a lot.
They then had to go and play a Premier League game not really knowing the future of the club, the future of their Champions League campaign, whether they still needed to finish in the top four, and even whether they will even be allowed to represent their countries again.
Because these were all the rumours flying around that the players would have seen.
How are they supposed to then go and play a match pretending that everything was all dandy?
Well, the answer is, they didn’t. Yes, they played it in spirit, their bodies were there and they were doing something that resembled playing football.
But this Chelsea team looked lacklustre, tired, confused, and absolutely subdued as they tried to string passes together.
There was no intensity, no creativity, and a lack of all the basics.
BETTING OFFER – GET £20 IN FREE BETS WITH BOYLESPORTS

But can all that be pinned on the distraction of the European Super League?
Of course, it will have a massive effect on the players, and the board will take extra blame for Chelsea failing to beat Brighton tonight, managing only a goalless draw.
However, when you aren’t even completing the basics of football, further questions must be asked. For that, there isn’t really an excuse.
Chelsea were absolutely awful tonight, and there is no excuse for such a poor performance.
But at the end of the day, we must remember that this is a bunch of confused players going through real turmoil following the rumours and dramas of the last two days, so we cannot blame them for being subdued.

European Super League in TATTERS as Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Man City quit after fan uproar

THE European Super League lies in tatters this evening as Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and City all quit on a dramatic evening. The FA, Uefa and Prime Minister Boris Johnson joined in the chorus of joy as ESL plans crumbled, while United confirmed executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is QUITTING “at the end of 2021”.

It is also believed that Atletico Madrid have pulled out of the 12-club rebel league, while Barcelona have said they will put the proposal to their fans before deciding.
City were the first club to officially pull the plug, with Chelsea following suit as their stars were preparing to face Brighton.
Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham then joined United in completing the exodus with coordinated statements at 11pm this evening.
The European Super League itself said it was considering the “most appropriate steps to reshape the project, always having in mind our goals of offering fans the best experience possible”.
Old Trafford legend Gary Neville urged United to boot out all the executives involved in the ESL plotting.
Nev told Sky: “Ed Woodward is the trunk of the tree, now it’s time to get the roots out…the Glazers have no place in Manchester United.
“Every single exec who sits at the table, they need throwing out of that club, he knew his time in football was finished.”
But in a statement on the Red Devils’ official website, Woodward made no mention of the ESL as he said: “I am extremely proud to have served United.
“And it has been an honour to work for the world’s greatest football club for the past 16 years.
“The club is well positioned for the future and it will be difficult to walk away at the end of the year.“I will treasure the memories from my time at Old Trafford, during a period when we won the Europa League, the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. I am proud of the regeneration of the club’s culture and our return to the Manchester United way of playing.”

United co-chairman Joel Glazer said: “Ed Woodward has served the club with great distinction. On behalf of everyone at United I would like to place on record our sincere thanks for his tireless work and dedication.
“His contribution to the club has been massive, and he will always be welcome at Old Trafford as a part of the Manchester United family.”
In what will be a potentially fatal blow to the £4.6billion scheme, Man City chiefs decided they could no longer be party to the plans that have rocked football to its very foundations.
And in a brief statement, the club confirmed: “Manchester City Football Club can confirm that it has formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group developing plans for a European Super League.”

Ecstatic Etihad superstar Kevin De Bruyne reacted with an emotional post attaxcking the EFL’s concept of no relegation.
He posted: “This man comes out of a little town out of Belgium dreaming of playing at the highest stage possible.
“I’ve worked and competed against everybody trying to win the ultimate.“But the most important word is COMPETING.

“Let’s keep inspiring the next generation of footballers and keep the fans dreaming.”
And Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin welcomed City “back to the European football family”.
Ceferin added:  “They have shown great intelligence in listening to the many voices – most notably their fans – that have spelled out the vital benefits that the current system has for the whole of European football – from the world-beating Champions League final right down to a young player’s first coaching session at a grassroots club. “As I said at the Uefa Congress, it takes courage to admit a mistake but I have never doubted that they had the ability and common sense to make that decision.”
The FA claimed the clubs’ U-turn could now “unify the game – after it “threatened the whole pyramid”.
And their statement added: “We welcome the news that some of the clubs have decided to abandon the plans…

“English football has a proud history based on opportunity for all clubs and the game has been unanimous in its disapproval of a closed shop.”
City were the last of the initial six Prem clubs and the 12th in all to sign up to a plan hatched by Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester United and funded by US investment giant JP Morgan.
Like Chelsea, who are in the process of preparing their withdrawal documents, the Etihad outfit were understood to feel they had no option other than to join the breakaway.
That was despite both clubs’ hierarchies harbouring doubts over the project.
But the fear of missing out on a huge tranche of the initial £3bn joining pot and minimum £130m per year on offer saw both clubs take a bite out of the carrot.

City and Co were also slammed by their Prem rivals, with the League, FA and Government lining up to vow the clubs would simply not be allowed to walk away and join the elite cartel clubs.
And Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is furious at reportedly being “blind-sided” by the overwhelming backlash.
An extra blow to the crumbling project came from Barcelona, who announced they would not join the Super League unless there was a vote of members to approve the move.
President Joan Laporta said: “Barcelona will NOT join the Super League until our socios (fan members) vote for it. It’s their club, so it’s their decision.”
As the news broke, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted: “The decision by Chelsea and Manchester City is – if confirmed – absolutely the right one and I commend them for it.
“I hope the other clubs involved in the European Super League will follow their lead.”
The European Super League was announced on Sunday night and met with a furious backlash from fans, players and authorities.

The plans have also been criticised by the likes of Boris Johnson and Prince William.
The Sun reported earlier today how three Prem teams that signed up were considering pulling out.
A massive fan backlash is believed to be one of the major factors behind half of the six Premier League teams involved having second thoughts.
In total, 12 European teams have announced the setting up of a new franchise league in which they will be free of relegation fears.
Bild claimed there could be as many as three Premier League clubs getting cold feet and that if they break ranks it will bring the whole idea crashing down before it even gets going.
The remaining 14 top-flight clubs met today to discuss how to fight back against the proposals and how they will challenge the six rebels.

A Premier League statement said: “The Premier League, alongside The FA, met with clubs today to discuss the immediate implications of the Super League proposal.
“The 14 clubs at the meeting unanimously and vigorously rejected the plans for the competition.
“The Premier League is considering all actions available to prevent it from progressing, as well as holding those Shareholders involved to account under its rules.
“The League will continue to work with key stakeholders including fan groups, Government, Uefa, The FA, EFL, PFA and LMA to protect the best interests of the game and call on those clubs involved in the proposed competition to cease their involvement immediately.
“The Premier League would like to thank fans and all stakeholders for the support they have shown this week on this significant issue. The reaction proves just how much our open pyramid and football community means to people.”

Chelsea 0 Brighton 0: Thomas Tuchel’s hopes of Champions League take huge blow but ESL chaos overshadows night

AND just like that, it matters after all.The dropped points in the race for the top four. The fear and anxiety of not qualifying for next year’s Champions League.

The drab goalless home draw against a dogged Brighton side not worthy of gracing a ‘Super League’ according to  several disgraced and deluded owners.
Thomas Tuchel will not be happy with Chelsea’s result on the night.
But clubs across the country and the continent will just be glad to see competitive action doing what it does best.
Messing with the emotions. Creating narratives. Providing drama.
All of those things were on offer before a ball was even kicked at Stamford Bridge as news filtered through that Roman Abramovich had caved in and listened to his passionate fanbase.
Blues supporters armed with hand-drawn banners and expletive chants to fill even the loftiest of arenas surrounded the stadium hours before last night’s contest.
It meant Tuchel and his players were sat on their team coach for 45 minutes unable to access the ground with crowds covering every spare inch of road.
Both sets of players only came out on to the pitch 20 minutes before kick-off, which was subsequently delayed by 15 minutes.

But what is a quarter of an hour in return for the very fabric of English football?
Despite the historic nature of the evening, Chelsea boss Tuchel admitted to being frustrated.

His skipper Cesar Azpilicueta was part of the Premier League  captains’ emergency meeting earlier in the day — perhaps why Tuchel decided to leave him on the bench.
In fact, the German coach made six changes with one eye on top-four rivals West Ham and Champions League semi-final opponents Real Madrid in the coming days.

One of the biggest decisions was leaving out Timo Werner, despite his FA Cup semi-final influence, for Kai Havertz in a false nine role.

Fans troll European Super League over ‘brutal’ knockout stages as clubs ‘drop like flies’ out of breakaway competition

FOOTBALL fans revelled in the implosion of the European Super League on Tuesday night with hilarious reactions on social media.Pressure from supporters, players, managers, broadcasters, governing bodies and the UK government worked almost immediately as Chelsea and Manchester City enacted proceedings to leave the competition just 48 hours after it was announced.
Chelsea protests were swiftly met with news that their club was leaving the Super LeagueCredit: Getty
Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham all followed suit at around 11pm as the breakaway plot was left in tatters.
And that led to widespread joy across Twitter, with many people instantly producing some wonderfully witty memes within minutes of the ESL collapse.
Referencing an image from the comedy show ‘Nathan For You’ where a man makes complex plans to solve straightforward issues, one fan drew comparisons between the series and the ESL mess.
They said: “The plan? Somehow get an invite to The Super League, wait for the other clubs to all withdraw, and then declare yourselves the inaugural champions.”
Another simply added: “European Super League’s knockout stages are brutal!”
There were also several references to scenes from The Simpsons, often depicting something which comes and goes at speed, much like the idea of the ESL which looks to have lasted just two days.
And one person questioned whether the ESL ordeal had in fact been ‘an Apprentice task’.
Others picked up on the comments of Real Madrid present Florentino Perez, who earlier today suggested the Super League could better appeal to the 18-24 age range.
And even Aja’s official Twitter account posted an Anchorman meme which read: “Roy, that escalated quickly.”

Protests were carried out against the Super League by Chelsea supporters before their clash with Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening.
Before the game even got underway, news came through that the Blues were set to leave the ESL, with Manchester City also exiting.
That, along with Chelsea’s delay in arriving to the stadium due to the protesters blocking the entrance, led to a 15 minute delay to kick-off.
On Sunday there was a visceral reaction on social media to the announcement about plans for a European Super League.
But tonight seems to have put an end to that idea as football fans around the country celebrate the demise of the highly controversial plot.

But the move has been strongly opposed by their own supporters and the club are worried some of them might try to make the strength of their feelings known before, during or after their clash with the Saints.
So the North Londoners will have extra stewards and patrols on duty in a bid to avoid any flashpoints.
SunSport exclusively revealed Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been ‘shaken’ by the Super League backlash.
Interim boss Ryan Mason refused to be drawn on the controversial topic at his first press conference yesterday.
When asked about it, he said: “As you can probably imagine, since 10 or 11 o’clock yesterday, my mind has been consumed by so many other things.
“I can’t give an honest answer if I don’t actually know what the situation consists of, so at the moment I’m not the person to ask. I don’t know enough about it, I don’t think a thing about it to answer the question.
“I need to know all the information before I answer a question on it. My mind has been deep in a laptop or on the training pitch or trying to help the players in the classroom in the last 24 or 48 hours.
“I don’t know anything about the situation for me to comment on the fans, the football club, anything. I can’t answer that question.”

Liverpool were one of six Premier League clubs that tried to push through a rebel league.
Angry Reds fans hung banners at Anfield and also protested outside Elland Road ahead of Monday’s game against Leeds.
But the European Super League fell apart on Tuesday night when Manchester City withdrew.
That set off a domino effect with Chelsea close behind – and the other four English clubs all quit within minutes of each other.
The fallout has even seen Manchester United bigwig Ed Woodward quit his role at Old Trafford.
Henry brought Liverpool in 2010 but was warned that fans would never forget this episode.
But former Reds defender Carragher said he doesn’t think the American can even attend another game at Anfield ever again.

Carragher said on Sky Sports: “I’m almost as angry with Liverpool now as I was yesterday the fact they’re still hanging in there.
“Jurgen Klopp has thrown them under a bus, their own captain has thrown them under a bus.
“There’s nothing left for Liverpool’s owners in what they’re holding on for – I don’t see how they can continue.
“I don’t see a future for the ownership of FSG at Liverpool any more on the back of this, and I think they’re just making it worse for themselves the longer they hang in.
“I do not see how John Henry can sit in that wonderful main stand he was part of building and watch a game.

“I don’t see how him and Tom Werner can come back to the club again on the back of this because this will never be forgotten.
“It will be very difficult for them to have any sort of relationship with the fans going forward.”
And Souness, who won five league titles and three European Cups at Anfield, thinks it will be hard to ever rebuild relationships with fans.

Souness said on Sky Sports: “It’s been so underhanded, these are relationships that will take some mending.
“The biggest one is not chairman to chairman – it’s chairman to supporters.
“I know what Scousers are like. The will not forgive John Henry for this. I can’t see how he gets back from this.”

Souness added: “I think it’s different for Abramovich. I think he and Man City were dragged in.
“I imagine the catalysts for this would’ve been the Americans at Liverpool and Man Utd.
“How you recover from this I’m not quite sure because the relationship between the supporter and board will be damaged forever.”
