      After a slow start had the home support on edge, not helped by the early loss of Takehiro Tomiyasu to injury, Arsenal started to click.
      Fabio Vieira found his way in down the right but correctly saw his shout for a penalty denied. Moments later Jorginho found Gabriel Martinelli with an inspired through ball.
      The Brazilian raced through one-on-one but fired straight Antonio Adan in the Sporting goal. Xhaka was quicker on his feet than any in green and white, smashing a low strike home to nudge the hosts ahead.
      Arsenal dropped far deeper after their goal with Sporting’s forwards exposing them with their pace on a number of occasions.

      The Portuguese side threw everything at their hosts following the break, piling the pressure on before bagging a freak goal.
      Jorginho and Xhaka exchanged a sloppy one-two in midfield, allowing Goncalves to steal in before eyeing up a vacant Arsenal goal and lifting the ball just over Ramsdale from a staggering 46 yards.
      Arteta sent on Thomas Partey and Bukayo Saka but neither could prevent them from needing extra time.
      The former almost flashes in a stunning winner after sub Leandro Trossard had seen an extra-time effort tipped onto the post.

      Was only able to watch the equaliser sail over his head and past Ramsdale, but kept things tighter at the back from there on and twice could have won it in extra time when his powerful header forced a flying save from Adan.
      Oleksandr Zinchenko – 5
      Quickly rallied the troops following Goncalves’ equaliser and spent most of the evening holding on in a non-stop battle with former Tottenham man Marcus Edwards.
      Struggled to take control of the game in his usual role moving inside from full-back.
      Jorginho – 5
      Tested the Sporting defence with an early ball over the top for Jesus early on before cutting them open to find Martinelli in the build up to the opening goal.
      Struggled to get a grip with the Sporting midfield from there on, however, and was caught out messing about with the ball before losing it to hand over possession before Sporting’s goal.
      Granit Xhaka – 6
      The captain was the sharpest in the box to race onto the loose ball following an effort from Martinelli and fire the Gunners ahead.
      Poor ball back to Jorginho on halfway allowing Sporting to pinch possession and bag their equaliser.
      Fabio Vieira – 5
      A lively start petered out very quickly. Wasn’t doing too much to get back and when Arsenal were on the ball he wasn’t holding onto it long enough to give the boys at the back a breather.
      Tried his luck with a low free-kick but sent it straight at the goalkeeper before wasting a golden chance moments into extra time.

      Tracked back to help out the back line well and often but was sloppy on the ball and offered precious little going forwards.
      Gabriel Martinelli – 4
      A good run the in the build up to the opener, which he should have tucked away himself.
      Could have offered far more support to Zinchenko with Sporting’s pacey forwards causing trouble.
      Proved to be a thorn in the side for Sporting on the break throughout the second half, causing problems on the ball and frustrating them by going down at every opportunity.
      Sent a poor penalty in the perfect spot for Adan to palm it away.
      Gabriel Jesus – 6
      Looked sharp and utterly desperate to score early on.A few good touches and runs, but certainly more to come as he gets back up to speed.
      Arsenal lost a lot of confidence on the ball without their star man.

      Needed to be more aggressive up against the Sporting forwards, allowing them far too much time to cause problems.
      Drove forward when he could but was largely wasteful with the ball.
      Rob Holding (on for Saliba, 21 mins) – 3
      Looked off it as soon as he came on for the injured Frenchman. Couldn’t cope with the pace of Sporting’s forwards and struggled to stay organised at the back.
      Twice missed headers from long balls which could have caused real trouble for Ramsdale behind him.
      Leandro Trossard (on for Jesus, 45 mins) – 5
      Offered preciously little after being sent on to lead the line. Struggled to cause any real trouble for the Sporting defenders and never looks the best option to hold the ball up and bring others into play.
      Fluffed his lines after being sent through on goal by a horror back-pass from Sporting’s Youssef Chermiti, his effort being tipped onto the post.
      Thomas Partey (on for Jorginho, 66 mins) – 6
      Helped calm things down after replacing the former Chelsea man, taking the pressure off the back line and giving his side much more control on the ball.

      Helped wrestle control back and brought some life to a limp attacking display in the second half but failed to have the real sort of impact required.

      He immediately called for his team-mates to huddle together after the setback and Zinchenko could be seen barking out instructions, despite Granit Xhaka being captain on the night.
      Fans were impressed with the left-back’s passion and praised his leadership.

      The rain water came streaming down into the stands in two areas – one on the half-way line and another behind a goal.
      A large area of empty seats was clearly visible on the TV broadcast on BT Sport.
      But fans in the stadium didn’t mind as they watched a classic in North London.
      Arsenal were drawing at the time, after Sporting’s Pedro Goncalves scored from the HALFWAY LINE to cancel out Granit Xhaka’s opener.

      A number of fans were spotted into the crowd with their jaws stuck to the floor as they watch the stunner fly over keeper Aaron Ramsdale’s head.
      Despite being relatively dominant the Gunners couldn’t find a winner as the tie finished level at 3-3 on aggregate after last week’s draw in Portugal.

      Rob Holding took his place but Arsenal fans are concerned the injuries could derail their title bid.
      They took to Twitter to voice their worries with one Gooner saying: “Saliba and Tomiyasu getting injured in first 20min is really scary for Arsenal’s title hopes.”

      However, United did not make it easy for themselves early on, with Juanmi firing narrowly wide and Joaquin hitting the post in the opening 12 minutes.
      United eventually grew into the game, but failed to thrill with a display often too slow and lacking in on ball quality – particularly in the first half.
      The 4-1 first leg score meant Erik ten Hag’s side did not need to push the issue.
      But it didn’t stop them being up for the fight as the game descended into chaos with a number of meaty challenges being thrown in.

      The usual distribution problems persisted throughout this tie but swept up well behind the defence whenever the line was broken or a loose ball created.

      The stronger of the two full-backs in both an attacking and defensive sense. Strong on the ball kept the attack down his side relatively quiet.

      Replaced Raphael Varane in the starting XI and looked assured both on and off the ball.
      The more combative in stepping up out of the two centre-backs, Maguire put in a number of handy blocks on top of an aerially strong display.
      Lisandro Martinez – 8
      A quietly good game for the Argentine.
      Showed off a good range of passing and dealt with everything which came his way both when stepping up and sweeping behind Maguire, whom he berated at one stage in the first half.
      Tyrell Malacia – 6
      Tactical switch from Luke Shaw at left back and gave United a different option in build up by moving inside as an extra midfielder.
      Most danger seemed to come down his side, and defensive output was generally far from stalwart.
      Casemiro – 6
      In the team following suspension from the next four domestic fixtures but was back in the thick of the action tonight.
      He and Fred too often guilty of leaving holes in the United defence for Betis to play through.
      Fred – 5
      Endured a torrid time in the opening stages. Skipped past in dribbles on too many occasions and guilty of a number of needless turnovers, but retained his usual enthusiasm throughout.
      Usually thrives in a chaotic game such as this but was a shadow of his usual self. Subbed after 60mins.
      Facundo Pellistri – 7

      Offered United an outlet on the right side and was effective with the ball at his feet despite the limited occasions this occurred. Handed a ridiculous yellow card in the 30th minute.
      Responsible for United’s most dangerous chance in the first half with his volley striking the post. Overall did well on his first start for the club.
      Bruno Fernandes – 7
      Grew and got better as the match went on. Switched the play well throughout and was his typical tigerish self when called into defensive action.
      Played in Rashford early in the second half but the Englishman was unable to finish before doing the same for substitute Sabitzer. Subbed after 68mins to avoid suspension.
      Marcus Rashford – 7

      Back on the left wing today. More reserved involvement in build up but looked sharp when on the ball in the final third despite missing a number of good chances.
      Thundered home a sensational opener just seconds after firing a far easier shot miles over the bar. Subbed after 60mins.
      Wout Weghorst – 6
      Showed why he is important to this United side, dropping into midfield to help bring the ball upfield and make it stick up front.
      Lacked quality with his play in the final third though, misplacing a number of easy passes. Was inches away from opening the scoring in the first half.
      Substitutes
      Marcel Sabizter (on for Fred 60mins) – 6
      Almost added a second goal with a close shot in the area but saw the chance saved by Rui Silva.
      Jadon Sancho (on for Rashford 60mins) – 4
      Should have squared a chance for Elanga late on before fluffing his lines on the shot. Offside flag saved his embarrassment.
      Anthony Elanga (On for Fernandes (68mins) – 6
      Worked hard after his introduction and should offered an outlet as a left wing runner.

      To think, last season he scored five in all.
      But this is a player reborn under Erik ten Hag’s guidance.

      His 56th-minute effort could have been drawn from the Cristiano Ronaldo scrapbook.
      Receiving a crossfield pass from Casemiro he took the ball forward ten yards and then from 25 yards released a thunderous low shot that buried itself in the far bottom corner of then goal.
      As ever he pointed to his temple in celebration – ‘mentality’.
      That’s what he says it’s all about and he has the right one.

      Confidence flows through him.
      The goal was the 25-year-old’s sixth in the Europa League this season, to go with two assists, in eight appearances.
      So it was mission easily accomplished for United.

      A place that has been rebuilt into a fortress under Ten Hag and where United will be favourites to progress to the semi-finals and return to Wembley where they beat Newcastle 2-0 in that Carabao Cup triumph.
      While the title is now out of reach after dropping five points in their last two league games the pots can keep coming.
      Ten Hag was taking no chances last night, naming a strong side.
      Even though Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes risked a suspension in the next game if booked they were in the starting line-up.
      Harry Maguire was back with the armband and both he and Lisandro Martinez needed to be at their best to withstand a first-half onslaught.
      Despite the seemingly hopeless nature of the task in front of Betis there was some atmosphere inside the Estadio Benito Villamarin.
      The home crowd roared on every attack and an early one almost brought a goal as Juanmi beat David de Gea with an angled shot that rolled just the wrong side of the far post.
      Captain Joaquin was in soon after having been put through by Youssouf Sabaly but De Gea saved as he did with an outstretched leg when Juanmi had another effort.
      Yet it would be United who came closest to scoring with their first real chance in the only minute of first-half injury time.
      Facundo Pellistri making his first start for the club 892 days after signing for the Red Devils, had a shot deflected and Wout Weghorst was there.
      But, you probably know what’s coming next, he didn’t score.
      His outstretched leg steered the ball onto the post and goalkeeper Rui Silva batted the ball away.
      United ended the half having not had a shot on target for the first time this season in the opening period.
      That changed after the restart.
      They are so often better in the second period and Rashford was at the heart of it all.
      Found by Fernandes he was denied by the goalkeeper and also scooped a great chance over the bar.
      At the other end Ayoze Perez had a flick header well saved.
      Then came Rashford’s moment to silence the crowd.

      Fans were astounded by Weghorst’s failure to score and began ridiculing him on social media.
      One fan wrote: “As a Dutch person I apologise for Wout Weghorst 😭.”
