Real Betis 0 Man Utd 1 (agg 1-5): Marcus Rashford stunner fires Red Devils into pot for Europa League quarter-final draw

WHAT A SEASON Marcus Rashford is having. His fabulous winner here in Seville was his 27th goal for Manchester United in 43 games this season.

Of those, 19 have come in his 24 games since scoring three for England in the Qatar World Cup.
To think, last season he scored five in all.
But this is a player reborn under Erik ten Hag’s guidance.
One of the best frontmen in Europe right now.

His 56th-minute effort could have been drawn from the Cristiano Ronaldo scrapbook.
Receiving a crossfield pass from Casemiro he took the ball forward ten yards and then from 25 yards released a thunderous low shot that buried itself in the far bottom corner of then goal.
As ever he pointed to his temple in celebration – ‘mentality’.
That’s what he says it’s all about and he has the right one.

    Confidence flows through him.
The goal was the 25-year-old’s sixth in the Europa League this season, to go with two assists, in eight appearances.
So it was mission easily accomplished for United.
They blasted out ‘It’s a Kind of Magic’ before kick-off but it would only come from the right boot of Rashford.
This last 16 tie was really done and dusted at Old Trafford in the first leg when three second-half goals completed a 4-1 win.
Still, here in Seville, Rashford was happy to make sure of it.
Now for United it’s on to the next step in their bid for a triple crown.
Having bagged the Carabao Cup, their first trophy in six years, they are on for more.
They are now in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
It is the same stage they are at in the FA Cup where they will meet Fulham this Sunday at Old Trafford.
A place that has been rebuilt into a fortress under Ten Hag and where United will be favourites to progress to the semi-finals and return to Wembley where they beat Newcastle 2-0 in that Carabao Cup triumph.
While the title is now out of reach after dropping five points in their last two league games the pots can keep coming.
Ten Hag was taking no chances last night, naming a strong side.
Even though Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes risked a suspension in the next game if booked they were in the starting line-up.
Harry Maguire was back with the armband and both he and Lisandro Martinez needed to be at their best to withstand a first-half onslaught.
Despite the seemingly hopeless nature of the task in front of Betis there was some atmosphere inside the Estadio Benito Villamarin.
The home crowd roared on every attack and an early one almost brought a goal as Juanmi beat David de Gea with an angled shot that rolled just the wrong side of the far post.
Captain Joaquin was in soon after having been put through by Youssouf Sabaly but De Gea saved as he did with an outstretched leg when Juanmi had another effort.
Yet it would be United who came closest to scoring with their first real chance in the only minute of first-half injury time.
Facundo Pellistri making his first start for the club 892 days after signing for the Red Devils, had a shot deflected and Wout Weghorst was there.
But, you probably know what’s coming next, he didn’t score.
His outstretched leg steered the ball onto the post and goalkeeper Rui Silva batted the ball away.
United ended the half having not had a shot on target for the first time this season in the opening period.
    That changed after the restart.
They are so often better in the second period and Rashford was at the heart of it all.
Found by Fernandes he was denied by the goalkeeper and also scooped a great chance over the bar.
At the other end Ayoze Perez had a flick header well saved.
Then came Rashford’s moment to silence the crowd.

‘As a Dutch person, I apologise for Wout Weghorst’ – Fans poke fun at Man Utd striker after missing woeful sitter

FANS have mocked Wout Weghorst after he missed a sitter for Manchester United against Real Betis. The striker scored in the 4-1 win in the first leg last week but spurned a brilliant opportunity to give his side the lead in Spain.

A Bruno Fernandes free-kick fell to Facundo Pellistri who scuffed an effort onto the post.
But it passed Weghorst by mere inches and the striker missed a perfect opportunity to poke the ball past the keeper and into the net.
Fans were astounded by Weghorst’s failure to score and began ridiculing him on social media.
One fan wrote: “As a Dutch person I apologise for Wout Weghorst 😭.”

Another added: ” Weghorst is genuinely allergic to scoring 😭”
A third said: “Weghorst is so so bad. I didn’t think he would be this bad 🤣”
And another commented: “I promise you I’m better at football than Weghorst.”
Marcus Rashford was also guilty of missing great chances to score at the beginning of the second half.

One effort was saved while another he blasted high over the bar, but unlike Weghorst he made amends moments later as he found the bottom corner with a beautifully executed strike from range.
Weghorst has been a target of mockery since joining the Red Devils and also came under fire for touching the ‘This is Anfield’ sign before the match against Liverpool.
But some fans have taken a shine to the Dutchman and have been left impressed by his work rate and commitment.

Marcus Rashford goes from ‘Theo Walcott to Pele’ as he follows up horror miss with worldie as Man Utd lead Real Betis

MARCUS RASHFORD made up for missing a sitter by scoring a wondergoal against Real Betis. The in-form Manchester United forward missed a host of chances in Spain… culminating in an effort blasted MILES over the bar from inside the six-yard box.

But Rashford made amends just moments later, and in some style, by hitting one from outside the box into the bottom corner.
The England international got the ball out of his feet and nestled one into the corner of the net.
And it left fans failing him online as United took the lead in Spain on the night to make it 5-1 on aggregate.
One said: “Rashford went from Walcott to Pele in around 60 seconds!”

Another added: “From Walcott to prime Pele in a matter of minutes.”
One joked: “Only Rashford can give us Walcott and Pele in space of 10 seconds.”

United progressed through to the quarter-final stage after convincingly beating Real Betis over two legs.

And Erik ten Hag praised Rashford for his perseverance.
Speaking after full-time, he said: “Rashy missed some chances, but he keeps belief, keeps trying.”
Captain Harry Maguire added: “It’s been a good two games over the two legs.
“Betis are a good team they’re fifth in La Liga. We knew it wouldn’t be an easy draw. They came at us and threw everything at us.
“But we expected a fast start from them. We knew if we didn’t concede in the first 20 minutes it would have been a big part of the game well done.

    That’s it for tonight!
It was an incredible evening of Europa League action with the best of it undoubtedly coming from the Emirates.
Arsenal have been knocked out on penalties at home after drawing 3-3 on aggregate with Sporting Lisbon.
The game will likely be remembered for the incredible halfway line effort by Pedro Goncalves.
The Gunners will turn their attention to out-of-form Crystal Palace who visit the Emirates on Sunday.
    We will see you there.
    Europa League Draw Tomorrow
Arsenal will not be in the hat for the Europa League draw tomorrow but here’s all the clubs that will be.
Sevilla, Feyenoord, Man United, Juventus, Sporting Lisbon, Bayer Leverkusen, Roma and Union Saint-Gilloise.
    Wait and See
Easily forgotten amid the drama of the night is the fact both Takehiro Tomiyasu and William Saliba were escorted off the pitch by medical staff in the first half.
There is yet to be any serious update on either of their conditions so Arsenal fans will likely want to keep their ears out tomorrow to see if any news emerges.
Both of them, particularly Saliba, have been in important in the club’s title charge this season.
William Saliba became the second Arsenal defender subbed off in the first-half against Sporting Lisbon

    Sporting Misses: X
Arsenal Scorers: Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard
    Arsenal Misses: Gabriel Martinelli
    The Moment of Magic
Pedro Goncalves left jaws on the ground at the Emirates.
The goal came just after the 61 minute mark as Jorginho lost the ball in the centre circle.
Goncalves dribbled five yards before launching an epic effort from the halfway line which flew over the retreating Aaron Ramsdale.
Regardless of what happens for Sporting in the rest of this tournament, the fans will always have that special, special moment.
‘We gave every single ball away’
Mikel Arteta has lamented Arsenal’s sloppiness as he reflected on their Europa League defeat to Sporting.
He told BT Sport: “No [we did not do enough] because we have’t won it. A huge blow, obviously.
“There were moments especially in the first 75 minutes where we weren’t at our level. We gave every single ball away and we did not have the capacity to dominate the game.
“In the last 15 minutes and extra time we had the chances to win it and when it goes down to the penalties it’s a lot of anxiety and we lost it.
“We have to look ourselves and why we weren’t good enough to go through. And after that now we have 11 games and the first one is Palace.”
    Odegaard Reacts
A disappointed Martin Odegaard has given his reaction to Arsenal’s Europa League defeat.
He said: “I think we did enough [to win it] in some periods of the game but most of the game we weren’t on the level we should be.
“I think part of the game we did well but throughout the whole game we did not play out best football so it could have gone either way.”
    Sporting Success
The Sporting fans are still delirious in the away end after an extraordinary night in their history.
With perhaps Napoli being the only exception, Arsenal have been the most impressive side in European football this season.
But their standards slacked throughout both legs and Sporting Lisbon took full advantage.
A lot was said about Marcus Edwards in the build up this to tie but there are two other players who will perhaps take most credit from these two games.
One is goalkeeper Antonio Adan who made a few fantastic saves throughout the match and the other, of course, is halfway line goal king Pedro Goncalves who will likely be giving Aaron Ramsdale nightmares tonight.
    All Over
So it finishes 1-1 on the night, 3-3 on aggregate and 5-3 to Sporting Lisbon on penalties.
Heartbreak for Arsenal whose European journey has come to a swift end.
Some fans may see this as a blessing in disguise given Arsenal can now fully focus on their title pursuit.
But the look of despair on the faces of the Gunners players tell you that that idea is of little consolation.
    PENS: Arsenal 3-5 Sporting
Nuno Santos scores and Arsenal are OUT of the Europa League.
An extraordinary, thrilling, unbelievable European tie and Martinelli’s penalty miss is the last involvement the Premier League leaders will have in Europe this season.
    PENS: Arsenal 3-4 Sporting
    IT’S SAVED! MARTINELLI DENIED.
Arsenal are in huge trouble now.
And Sporting are one pen away from the Europa League quarters.
    PENS: Arsenal 3-4 Sporting
Artur Gomes scores an unconvincing penalty to make it 4-3. Every pen scored so far and it’s Martinelli up next.
    PENS: Arsenal 3-3 Sporting
Leandro Trossard scores but similar to Inacio it’s only just.
Not a great pen and Adan gets a hand to it – but it sneaks in.
    Six taken, six scored.
    PENS: Arsenal 2-3 Sporting
SO CLOSE! Inacio with a poor pen but Ramsdale only gets half a glove on it and it goes in.
    PENS: Arsenal 2-2 Sporting
And a great penalty by Saka to even up the shootout again. Left foot into the bottom right hand corner.
    PENS: Arsenal 1-2 Sporting
It’s Esgaio up next and he smacks it past Ramsdale, who dived late in an attempt to put the kicker off. 100 per cent so far.
    Saka up next.
    PENS: Arsenal 1-1 Sporting
The Arsenal captain strikes it with his left foot into the bottom corner. Two pens so far and both teams have scored.
    PENS: Arsenal 0-1 Sporting
St Juste scores with a decent finish towards the top left of the net. Odegaard up next.
    PENS: Arsenal 0-0 Sporting
The coin flip appears to be won by the Sporting captain and keeper Adan and the shootout will now take place in front of the away fans at the Emirates.
Who is stepping up first? It’s Jeremiah St Juste. heading forward.
    Here we go
Time to become a hero. Both teams are in huddles as we await the first penalty shootout ever at the Emirates stadium for a place in the Europa League quarter-finals.
An extraordinary night of football is set for it’s final act.
Reality star Kim Kardashian, who is at the Emirates tonight, has certainly got her money’s worth.
Arsenal 1-1 Sporting Lisbon (Agg: 3-3)
    There’s the whistle.
What a game. What a tie. We’re going to penalties in this epic game at the Emirates.
    Wow.
Arsenal 1-1 Sporting Lisbon (Agg: 3-3)
    120. One minute added on and then it’s penalties unless there’s a late goal.
Ramsdale is going to boot forward a free-kick from the halfway line.
Arsenal 1-1 Sporting Lisbon (Agg: 3-3)
    118. RED CARD! Ugarte sent off for Sporting.
The away side break from the Arsenal corner – having narrowly survived two attempts on their goal – before Arsenal win it back.
In an attempt to stop the Gunners then breaking on their goal, Ugarte takes out Saka with a late tackle and picks up his second booking.
A wild few minutes here at the Emirates.
Arsenal 1-1 Sporting Lisbon (Agg: 3-3)
    116. BIG SAVE BY ADAN! Martinelli is fouled and Odegaard swings in a free-kick.
Gabriel gets a header in that the keeper is able to knock out for a corner.
And another chance! Effort at the back post from the corner that looks like it was cleared off the line.

    Current team news
Erik Ten Hag will be delighted to have Casemiro available to him despite the Brazilan’s red card offence against Southampton.
However, Alejandro Garnacho (ankle) is out for the remainder of the season and Victor Lindelof (ill) could miss out.
While Anthony Martial will still need to be assessed despite returning to full training.
Elsewhere, Manuel Pellegrini is without long-term absentees Nabil Fekir and JohnJuan Cruz.
But William Carvalho is back from his La Liga ban.
    Can Caemiro play?
Casemiro received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz last weekend.
The midfielder was initially only shown a yellow card by referee Anthony Taylor, but he changed the decision to a red after consulting the VAR monitor.
And as a result, the Brazilian will miss FOUR of United’s upcoming matches due to it being his second red card of the season.
However, Casemiro’s ban only applies to domestic competitions, not to European competitions so he CAN play.
    Wout a good finish
Wout Weghorst scored his first goal at Old Trafford in the first leg and he’ll be hoping to get himself on the scoresheet tonight.

Welcome to Real Betis vs Manchester United
Manchester United return to Europa League action against Real Betis and they have one foot firmly in the quarter-finals… but stranger things have happened in football.
Goals from Marcus Rashford, Antony, Bruno Fernandes and Wout Weghorst saw the Red Devils run riot at Old Trafford.
And Erik ten Hag was able to breathe a huge sigh of relief as his side went into the match off the back of a 7-0 hammering by Liverpool.
With this game pretty much wrapped up, United will certainly have one eye on this Friday’s Europa League quarter-final draw where there are no restrictions from them drawing anyone.
However, there have been some incredible European comebacks over the years so the Red Devils will need to be focused on the job at hand tonight.

Europa League quarter-final draw simulated with Man Utd set to face former manager and Arsenal landing horror tie

MANCHESTER UNITED will face a former manager and Arsenal landed a horror tie in our simulated Europa League quarter-final draw.SunSport put the eight pairs of teams facing off in last-16 action tonight into a virtual hat before the real deal in Nyon tomorrow.

Arsenal need to get past Sporting to secure their quarter-final spotCredit: Getty
And the randomised selections threw up a bumper set of fixtures.
The first pair of teams to come out were Manchester United or Real Betis – and they were pitted against Roma or Real Sociedad.
With the Red Devils winning 4-1 in the first leg at Old Trafford, they will be confident of progressing to the quarters.
And there they would face another Spanish side… or Jose Mourinho’s Roma in a repeat of the 2021 Europa League semi-final United prevailed from 8-5 on aggregate.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
The Italians won the first leg against Sociedad 2-0 and the thrilling draw would see a return for the Special One to Old Trafford in the quarters.
Mourinho has ten wins, nine draws and five defeats in his 24 matches as a manager against United with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Tottenham.
His most recent victory was Spurs’ 6-1 thumping at Old Trafford in October 2020 but the Red Devils won 3-1 in North London later in the season.
Mourinho famously won the Europa League with United in 2017 and completed his Uefa treble as Roma lifted the Conference League last year.

Incredibly, the next tie drawn was Juventus or Freiburg against Arsenal or Sporting.
Juve hold a slender 1-0 advantage from the first leg while Arsenal drew 2-2 in Lisbon a week ago.
The two European heavyweights have only met six times with Arsenal claiming three wins.
Their latest competitive clash was way back in the 2006 Champions League quarter-finals, with the Gunners winning 2-0 en route to the final.
Juventus have reached two Champions League finals of their own since then, in 2015 and 2017, but dropped down to the Europa League after finishing third in their group behind PSG and Benfica this term.
The third quarter-final saw Sevilla or Fenerbahce take on Bayer Leverkusen or Ferencvaros.
Sevilla and Bayer both lead 2-0 from the first leg.
And the final tie produced Shakhtar Donetsk or Feyenoord against Union Berlin or Union Saint-Gilloise, with the pairs locked at 1-1 and 3-3 respectively.
The good news for United and Arsenal fans, if they get through their quarter-finals in our simulated draw, is that they would avoid each other in the semis and therefore could only meet in May’s Budapest final.
Unlike in the last-16 draw, there are no seedings in the quarter-finals and clubs from the same country can be drawn against each other, meaning there are no restrictions at all.

Mikel Arteta reveals his new name for substitutes in incredible bid to boost squad morale for Premier League title push

MIKEL ARTETA admits that he never stops thinking of new motivation methods to keep his Arsenal players on course for a Premier League and Europa League double.Last weekend’s 3-0 win at Fulham was celebrated in the visitors’ dressing room with a giant replica of the famous Arsenal clock and the club crest plastered all over the walls to make Craven Cottage feel more like the Emirates.

Arteta now calls his subs ‘impactors’ as the Prem leaders eye a doubleCredit: Getty
Outside the players’ entrance at the Gunners’ London Colney training ground, Arteta has had the words “train to win” concreted into the path.
And he regularly has a DJ pumping out tunes on the side of the training pitch to get his players up and running.
He was widely derided when he blasted out “You’ll Never Walk Alone” ahead of a 4-0 defeat at Anfield.
But no one is laughing now Arsenal are five points clear at the top of the table and bidding to reach the Europa League quarter-finals this evening following last week’s 2-2 draw at Sporting Lisbon.

Arteta said: “I think every game needs something different and we are always looking at what we have to throw at the boys.
“We try to give them exactly what they need to make the team better and get the right mindset with the right energy and confidence levels.
“Of course if you only judge it on results alone, that’s something different. But the response as individuals and as a group is always really good.
“The way I measure it is by looking in their faces, their attitude, their behaviour, then I look at the video and analyse what I can see.”

Arteta has even taken to referring to his substitutes as “impactors” after a long summer chat with former England rugby coach Eddie Jones and a number of other leading coaches from various sporting fields.
He said: “It’s something that we wanted to change and I discussed it with a few people to help us find something that particularly suited us.
“It’s the best way to express how we feel about the subs and how they have to feel about their role, especially on match days.
“The idea is to replace somebody and make the team better or to do something different to win the game.
“And the more you repeat that phrase, the closer you get to the mentality of having an impact on the game rather than just being a sub.
“I’m not saying it makes the players on the bench feel less disappointed because everybody wants to start.
“But every manager has their own way of doing things and this is about managing the group so they know their role and making sure that everyone is still motivated to help the team.”
Thursday’s match will be Arsenal’s first European knockout game in front of a full Emirates since they were dumped out by Olympiacos in February 2020.
And Arteta said: “It’s been a long time since we had one of these special European nights and we have to build that back.
“The supporters have to enjoy coming to these games and the team has to give them the right reasons to be part of that.
“Hopefully this match can be the start of a nice journey.”
Fit-again Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus is available for the game after making his comeback as a late sub in Sunday’s victory at Fulham — but is unlikely to start.
Arteta said: “Gabi is feeling good and training every day. He says his sensations are better and better, which is really positive.

“But we still have to manage his minutes and his involvement in the team.”
