But he was deployed in a slightly different role by Ten Hag, operating as a false nine and coming deep to collect the ball.
That allowed team-mates such as Antony, Jadon Sancho and Marcel Sabitzer to make advanced runs, wreaking havoc on the Sevilla backline.
In the build-up to United’s second goal Martial dropped deep to receive the ball, advanced with the ball and took on a defender before picking out Sabitzer with a delightful ball over the top of the defence.
The midfielder scored to add his second of the match and left United fans purring with Ten Hag’s astute tactics.

Many praised the Dutchman for starting Martial as a false nine, when he could have been tempted to play the Frenchman out wide given Marcus Rashford’s injury.
Instead Ten Hag picked Martial to play the lone striker role instead of Wout Weghorst, and fans praised the decision.
One said: “Ten Hag is a genius. Bruno deep, Martial false 9 and Sabitzer up top. Mental tactics.”
Another added: “Martial making football look so easy, Sabitzer? sign him ! Ten hag is the best! 💪”

A third said: “Martial has been Ten Hag’s missing link.”
Ten Hag is a big fan of the forward and is confident he will continue to score goals as long as he stays fit.
He said: “When he’s [Martial] on the pitch, he will score, he will link up, do good, but yeah, keep fit and when he’s fit, he’s massive for us.” More

To make matters worse for Roma, the striker’s exit wasn’t even their first of the night.

Dybala has an active release clause this summer worth just £10.5million.
And less than a year after joining Roma from Juventus for free, there could be fears Dybala may have played his last game for the club.
As for Abraham, he will be hoping his problem isn’t too serious after making a huge impact in the Italian capital.
The hitman has 34 goals in 93 games since his £34m move from Chelsea in 2021.
But 27 of those came last season, with Abraham only managing to score seven times this term.
He has been tipped for a Premier League return this summer, with former loan side Aston Villa linked.
And there could yet be a return to Chelsea, who are able to re-sign Abraham for £68m thanks to a buyback clause. More

Lissen is desperate for the Dutch side to win, and admitted he has been a little tense in the lead-up to the clash.
But unfortunately for the forward he will have no impact on the game as he moved to Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds last summer.
However he still hopes his old side can go all the way and win the Europa League after despatching Mourinho’s Roma.
In an interview with Voetball International he said: “I have to be honest, I really hate Mourinho.

“I’m also a sore loser. So obviously one could have predicted how the final would go. We went down 0-1 and the whole farce came to light.
“I hope Feyenoord take revenge just for me tonight. I’m tense, a little more than usual. It must be revenge for all the players who are gone from the squad.

The winger picked up the knock on Saturday during United’s 2-0 victory over Everton in the Premier League.
The England international is also set to “be unavailable for a few games” following the quarter-final clash with the LaLiga giants.
However, the 25-year-old has eased some of the fans’ fears by revealing he is “working hard” with the Red Devils’ physios.
The Manchester giants’ top scorer of the season hinted that he will be back “asap”.

Rashford tweeted: “I’m working hard with the physio to get back asap! See you soon.”
Rashford’s injury comes as a major blow for United after 28 goals and 10 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions this season.
Erik ten Hag’s men remain competitive on three fronts after winning the Carabao Cup as they also target the FA Cup and Europa League trophy as well as a Premier League top-four push.
However, the forward’s injury is fortunately not believed to be season ending.

United stated: “Subsequent assessment of the injury suggested that Marcus will be unavailable for a few games, but is expected to be back for the season run-in.
“The England international’s absence is a disappointment given his red-hot form this season, with 28 goals in all competitions.
“But there will also be relief about the prospect of his return for important games in the final weeks of the season.” More

Erik ten Hag not worried by Marcus Rashford injury as ‘Man Utd play their best football’ with DIFFERENT striker in XI

Erik ten Hag has lost top scorer Marcus Rashford to injuryCredit: Getty
The fitness bit is the main issue, with the player constantly in and out of the squad with strains, pulls and knocks. Most recently it was a hip problem.
The 27-year-old — who spent the second half of last season on loan at Thursday’s Europa League opponents Sevilla — has seven goals this term from nine starts and a further eight sub appearances.
On Saturday, he grabbed his first goal since February 1 in the 2-0 win over Everton.
Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has constantly defended the player despite admitting he is ‘fragile’ when it comes to injury.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
But he insists that when he is in the team, United are at their best.
Ten Hag said: “You say I defended him but I just point to the stats. The stats are telling you that the moment he is on the pitch, then the time he needs for a goal is really less than others.
“When he is in the team, I refer to games against Manchester City, against Liverpool when he’s in the team, we play our best football and have our best results as a team.
“I just pointed to the stats and I see how he contributes to this team. He is ready to start a game.”

Much was expected of Martial after an explosive start to his United career when he joined for £36million from Monaco — a deal that could top £57.6m.
He scored 17 in his first campaign in 2015-16 but since then it has been eight, 11, 12, 23, seven, one and the seven this season.
The single goal last term came as he was farmed out on loan to Sevilla, for whom he scored once in 12 appearances.
Jose Mourinho would have been happy to sell him in the summer of 2018 and the club were prepared to listen to any decent offers at the end of last season.
Now, at a make-or-break moment, he has the chance to cement himself in the club’s history as United strive for a cup treble.
Antony, 23, is another who Ten Hag believes can help fill the goals gap.
The £85.5m Brazilian winger has seven in United colours — four of which have come in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League. Ten Hag said: “Of course, we expect from front-line players that they are not only a threat but also they have effect in the final third. And he has to work on that — but he is a young player.

“You mention he is not scoring in the Premier League but he did score a really important goal against Real Betis after half-time and he did score against Barcelona, the winner, and you can’t say they are not big games. He has scored also in cup games.
“If you can do it in such games you can also do it in Premier League games, so I am not concerned about that.
“But like many more players, we have to have to step up and he has to step up as well and we have to win games together.
“He is still a very young player, he can kill opponents, we have seen on Saturday when the manager of Everton brings on another player at half-time because he is killing the left full-back. He is able to do it but he has to do it every game.”
Ten Hag has been boosted by the Christian Eriksen’s recovery following an ankle injury in January.
Eriksen is expected to team up again with Casemiro in midfield tomorrow — the Brazilian will return to domestic action at Nottingham Forest on Sunday after finishing his four-game ban.
    Read More on The Sun
Ten Hag said: “The balance in the midfield was very good for a long time with Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes. The co-operation between them was very good.”

He had his hood up as he made his way out of the salon and across the street along with a friend and into his parked black motor.
The shop, named Indigo Sun, boasted about its new “ruby-collagen boosters for a beautiful tan and silky smooth skin” on its window.

And Fernandes will no doubt be glowing if he can help Erik ten Hag’s side take a huge step towards Europa League glory tomorrow.
The former Sporting Lisbon ace has endured an up-and-down campaign while skippering the team in the absence of the benched Harry Maguire.
He has scored ten goals so far this term and lifted the Carabao Cup back in February as United defeated Newcastle at Wembley.
Fans were gushing about his impact on Saturday as Fernandes, who has previously played at No10 and right-wing this season, was deployed in a deeper position in front of the back four against Everton.
