Watch moment hundreds of banned Eintracht Frankfurt fans gather on freezing HILL to watch their heroes lose to Aberdeen

EINTRACHT FRANKFURT are renowned for having some of the most fanatical followers on the continent. You will remember the incredible scenes as their supporters – clad in white – clinched the Europa League title against Rangers two seasons back.

Hundreds of fans were spotted chanting on the hill
And now hundreds of their followers have proved their devotion to the cause again.
European football’s governing body Uefa had banned the German outfit from selling away tickets to their Europa Conference League Group G game against Aberdeen on Thursday.
The Dons had been set to welcome 1,750 Eintracht Frankfurt fans until the ban.
But the Bundesliga club had the book thrown at them by Uefa after their fans used pyrotechnics and threw objects in their 1-0 away win at Finland’s HJK Helsinki on November 9.

They were also fined 30,000 Euros.
But that all came too late for some of the club’s hardiest followers – who had already booked their travel to Scotland and were determined to follow through with the trip.
And remarkable footage shared on social media last night by photographer Christian Machowski shows a couple of hundred fans gathered on a HILL near Pittodrie as the match got underway.
The German fans sang and chanted as they stood on the Granite City’s Broad Hill, with only a small police presence keeping an eye on proceedings.

Things didn’t turn out the way that Frankfurt might have hoped, as they crashed to a 2-0 defeat to Barry Robson’s men.
One fan wrote: “If I had booked flights and hotel I would have done same and had a party.”
Machowski replied: “Not sure I would stood on top of that mountain in the cold wind.”
Another Dons fan chipped in with some local knowledge, writing: “Wasn’t bad tonight, mild for this time of year.”

Watch bizarre moment Rennes are denied Europa League equaliser as VAR enforces little-known rule to leave fans baffled

RENNES went crazy with joy then astonishment – as VAR enforced a little-known rule to deny them a last-gasp equaliser and dump them in the Europa League play-offs.Video replays showed a “rare and unfortunate” infringement after Lorenz Assignon swept home 11 minutes into stoppage time during a 3-2 home loss against group winners Villarreal.

Rennes thought they had scored to secure a place in the #UEL last 16, deep into added time, but VAR had other ideas 😳Can anyone work out why this goal was disallowed? 🤯 pic.twitter.com/WHsxtuEt6I— Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) December 14, 2023

Rennes’ Enzo Le Fee had taken a free-kick earlier in the build-up – with the ball cannoning off the bar and the midfielder touching it next.
But that was long forgotten when Assignon fired the ball home in the middle of a crowded penalty area – sparking wild celebrations.
However, VAR stepped in to ensure the goal was disallowed – much to Villarreal’s relief.
That’s because a free-kick taker can’t be the first player to touch the ball after their own initial contact with it.

Commentator Sam Matterface joined viewers and pundits in being bemused – with TNT Sports at first suggesting offside might be the reason.
And after the game Matterface posted on X: “‘I’m still baffled…..”
Even Rennes manager Julien Stephan was in shock – and not just because a draw would have displaced Villarreal as group winners.
He admitted he had to be told about the obscure law on free-kicks.

Stephan said: “I learned it too, I knew the rule on penalties, I didn’t know that it could exist on free kicks. It’s an emotional elevator.
“I knew the rule existed for penalties, I didn’t know it existed for free kicks. It’s an emotional rollercoaster at this moment in time.”
Fans were also confused, with verdicts including “Devastating” and “VAR ruining the game again”.
One viewer wrote: “I’m almost certain this would be allowed in the PL because those on VAR would just not know that free kick law. Utterly useless.”
But other observers were more clued up.
Such experts pointed out the situation with posts like this: “Free-kick hits bar then comes back to player without a second player touching it. It’s the same as a player kicking the ball to himself. Rare and unfortunate.”

Real Betis 2 Rangers 3: Roofe wins thriller as Gers secure Seville salvation to march on to Europa League last 16

TWO miles from the scene of so much sorrow, Rangers at last found salvation in Seville.Nineteen months after losing the Europa League Final in the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan – Gers battled their way to glory just down the road in the Benito Villamarin.

Philippe Clement is still unbeaten as Rangers managerCredit: Willie Vass
On a night of incredible drama, Kemar Roofe hit the winner 12 minutes from time to send the Light Blues through to the knockout stages as group winners.
It was a first home defeat of the season for Real Betis – and undoubtedly Philippe Clement’s biggest win since taking charge.
Down to the bare bones – missing so many key players – his Rangers side stunned Manuel Pelligrini’s men to lay the ghosts of May 2022 to rest.
Remarkably, this was Gers’ first ever European victory against Spanish opposition on Spanish soil.
In so many ways, it was achieved against all the odds.
Now Clement’s men turn their attention to Hampden and the Viaplay Cup Final.
It’s a trophy that’s eluded the Ibrox club for too long and one they are desperate to claim against Aberdeen.
In failing to finish the job against Aris Limassol, Rangers left themselves with it all to do in Spain.
    Most read in Europa League
Pelligrini’s side had lost just once since crashing to defeat at Ibrox on September 21.
They hadn’t lost at home all season.
At the weekend, they came from behind to draw with Real Madrid.
They were firmly in the driving seat to finish top of Group C – thus avoiding a hazardous play-off against one of the Champions League drop-outs in February.
Not for the first time, Clement didn’t have his selection troubles to seek.
In midfield, there was no Todd Cantwell, no Ryan Jack, no Tom Lawrence, no Nico Raskin and no Scott Wright.
At the back Gers were without Leon Balogun and Ridvan Yilmaz, while Brazilian striker Danilo is sidelined for four months with torn medial ligaments.
As a result, Clement was forced to make four changes with Sam Lammers, Ross McCausland, Connor Goldson and Ben Davies returning to the starting line-up.
What followed was a truly breathless first half of football.
Twice Rangers took the lead, twice Betis drew level.
If some of the defending had been poor, some of the attacking had been exhilarating.
James Tavernier dragged an early shot wide, before William Carvalho forced Jack Butland into his first save of the night.
Sam Lammers did well to pick out Sima at the back post, the winger’s shot deflected inches past the post.
Then, with just ten minutes on the clock, Gers stormed into the lead.
A poor clearance by Betis keeper Rui Silva was headed into McCausland’s path by Tavernier.

The Gers youngster tore at the Real defence before threading the ball through for Dessers.
He couldn’t bring it under control, but it broke for Sima who drilled home,
Gers’ lead lasted just four minutes.
Tavernoer’s headed clearance was picked up by Juan Miranda who played a neat one-two with Borja Iglesias on the edge of the box.
McCausland hadn’t tracked the full-back’s run and he punished Rangers with a fine finish.
    Then, a manic two minutes.
Isco was the creator, crossing for Iglesias who completely missed his kick inside the box.
The ball broke for Héctor Bellerín who forced Butland into a fine save.
Rangers couldn’t clear their lines and seconds later Andrés Guardado rattled the crossbar with a stunning effort.
Yet, just when it seemed Gers were on the ropes, Jose Cifuentes broke.
His superb pass released Dessers, who still had so much to do as he raced in from the left.
But twisting his way past two Betis defenders, the much-maligned Nigerian slotted the ball through the legs of Silva.

It was a fantastic solo goal, but once again, Rangers couldn’t hold on to their lead.
Butland made another routine save to deny Ayoze Perez – but two minutes later he punished yet more slacking defending by the visitors.
Davies was guilty of giving the ball away, Goldson was then guilty of giving Isco too much time on the edge of the box.
The former Real Madrid playmaker turned this way and that, before slipping a pass through for Perez.
He took it first time, curling a quite superb finish right into the bottom corner.
Dujon Sterling replaced Cifuentes at the start of the second half.
Betis were first to threaten – Assane Diao’s header from a corner crashing back off the bar.
Butland then pulled off a brilliant point blank save with the ball hitting Davies’ hand on the way out.
At the other end, Lammers was fouled right on the edge of the Betis box, with the Gers players convinced he’d been tripped inside.
Serbian ref Srdjan Jovanovic was having none of it and Borna Barisic’s free-kick struck the wall.
There had been absolutely no let up in the drama or the tension.
With a little under half an hour to go, Clement threw on Roofe and Rabbi Matondo.
It was his last throw of the dice.
    How it paid off.
With 78 minutes gone, Davies flicked on Barisic’s corner.
Goldson did so well to play it back across goal with Matondo getting the initial touch.

His effort was blocked with the ball breaking for Roofe – taking it first time he found the back of the net to send 4,000 travelling Gers fans wild.

VILLARREAL’S Matteo Gabbia was knocked out cold and rushed to hospital after a freak collision with a team-mate against Rennes. The defender’s sickening injury overshadowed a contentious climax to a dramatic 3-2 Europa League victory for the Spanish group winners.

Gabbia’s head caught the knee of Villarreal skipper Raul Albiol as he stooped to nod the ball away.
The face of the loan centre-back rocked back worryingly and he collapsed to the floor with his arms sinking over his head.
The 24-year-old was carried off on a stretcher and taken to a French hospital.
The former Italy Under-21 star was expected to be kept in for tests – rather than return to Spain with the rest of the Villarreal squad.

The LaLiga club borrowed Gabbia from AC Milan for the season.
But reports in Italy suggest the Serie A giants have been keen to negotiate an early end to the deal – due to a mounting injury list.
Gabbia’s misfortune diverted attention from a dramatic tie with a hotly-debated finale.
Rennes needed a point to overhaul Villarreal and go through to the last 16 as group top dogs.

And only a last-gasp VAR decision that baffled viewers denied the hosts a last-gasp equaliser.
Gerard Moreno and Ilias Akhomach had put Villarreal ahead in each half, with Lorenz Assignon and Luydovic Blas levelling.
Dani Parejo then put the Spaniards back in front at 3-2 on 80 minutes.
But Assignon was convinced he had earned Rennes the point they wanted at the death when he eventually tucked away a rebound from a free-kick.
Video replays ruled it out, however – to the bemusement of TNT commentators as much as armchair observers.
Offside was thought to be the only possibility – but Assignon was shown to be onside.
It was later revealed the goal was erased because Enzo Le Fee had been first to touch the ball after his initial free-kick cannoned off the bar.
Once the ball is active, a free-kick taker can’t touch the ball before any other player has. More

How race for 5th Champions League spot looks with Premier League at risk of missing out after Man Utd and Newcastle woes

THE Champions League is set for a major revamp that will see two major European nations be handed an extra spot in the competition from next season. As it stands, the Premier League would miss out on gaining a fifth place.

Newcastle crashed out of Europe by losing to AC MilanCredit: Getty
The Champions League has long featured 32 teams split into eight groups of four, with the top two advancing out of each.
From next year it will be moving to the Swiss Model.
This will instead see 36 teams admitted into one big league table with the top eight qualifying automatically for the round of 16 and positions 9-24 contesting a play-off.
To determine fixtures teams will be split into four pots of nine.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Each club will be drawn to face two teams from each pot, including their own.
No teams will drop into the Europa League following the conclusion of the group stage.
With the number of teams admitted into the Champions League growing from 32 to 36, four extra spots will be up for grabs.
Two of these spots will go to the leagues whose clubs perform best in European competitions, including the Europa League and Europa Conference League, this season.

While the further two will go to the team that comes third in the Uefa nation ranked fifth in coefficient, and the other going to the champions’ qualifying path.
The best performing leagues will be determined by the average coefficient of clubs participating in Europe.
Every win by a club from a nation is worth two points, a draw one and a defeat none.
Bonus points are then accrued by progressing through various stages of each competition.
Playing in the Champions League group stage is worth four points, with five dished out for qualifying for the round of 16 and one each for the quarter-finals, semis and final.
Winning a Europa League group, as Liverpool already have done, is worth four points, while two are given to runners up.
Bonus points are then handed out for reaching the round of 16, quarters, semis and final.
Winning your group in the Europa Conference League, as Aston Villa could, is worth two points, while qualifying as runner-up is worth one.
Bonus points are given for reaching the semis or final.
All points earned by clubs from each country are added up before being divided by the number of teams from that nation in Europe, eight in the Premier League’s case.
Manchester United and Newcastle’s failure to progress, even into the Europa League, has seen the Premier League’s coefficient drop to third as it stands.
The English top flight would have been awarded the extra Champions League spot in four of the last five seasons, the exception being 2019-20.
Currently its coefficient number, 12.13, is behind those of Germany, 13.36, and Italy, 13.14.
With Man Utd and Newcastle both out already, the Prem will be heavily reliant on its other clubs to have deep runs in order to accumulate enough points to climb into the top two.
Holders Manchester City have won their Champions League group, while Arsenal have too.
Liverpool, Brighton and West Ham have all progressed in the Europa League, and Aston Villa have qualified for the Europa Conference League knockout rounds.

As it stands, the Bundesliga and Serie A would be handed the extra Champions League places.
Should a team from one of the two nations with the highest coefficient win the Europa League without finishing in the top five of their own division, that country could have six teams in the Champions League.
