Man Utd captain Harry Maguire encouraged by ‘promising’ season – but demands Europa League trophy after £85m transfer

MANCHESTER UNITED skipper Harry Maguire demanded his side bring home the Europa League trophy after a “promising” season.
The England star joined from Leicester over the summer in a huge deal worth £85million.

And the centre-back was quickly installed as Red Devils skipper after showing outstanding leadership potential.
United’s good form in the latter part of the Premier League season – boosted by the arrival of Bruno Fernandes in January – saw Maguire steer them to a third-placed finish.
But it is a piece of silverware that would really crown a successful first campaign.
And United can put themselves 90 minutes away from a European trophy if they see off Sevilla in tonight’s Europa League semi-final.

Ahead of the big game, Maguire said: “I joined this club to win trophies.
“I fully expect to win trophies while I’m at this club.
“Getting to semi-finals isn’t good enough for this club.
“It’s been a promising year in the Premier League, we’ve finished third.

“It’s not something that this club wants to do, finish third, but at the start of the season from where we were last year, I’m sure a lot of people would have taken that.
“But, for the future, that’s not where we want to be. We want to be winning trophies, the Premier League and other cups.
“So semi-finals are nice to get to, but you’ve really got to get the job done and make the final and then go on to win it.”

Maguire watched on as United crashed out of both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage this season.
And the former Foxes ace will hope it is third time lucky for his side as they bid to reach the Europa League final in Cologne.
The club have not won a trophy since Jose Mourinho led them to glory in the very same competition in 2017.

Bruno Fernandes deviated from his usual hopping penalty technique to strike from the spot in extra time against Copenhagen in the quarter-final to seal United’s progression.
The Portuguese midfielder’s effort saw the Red Devils scrape into the last four despite the best efforts of hero keeper Karl-Johan Johnsson who made 13 saves.
Sevilla dumped Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves out of the competition courtesy of a late goal from Lucas Ocampos and tonight’s winners will play either Inter Milan or Shaktar Donetsk for the title.

Simon Jordan says Harry Maguire is a ‘good central defender’, but is ‘gobsmacked he’s an £80m central defender’ More

How Man Utd could line up for Europa League clash with Sevilla with Solskjaer set for crunch De Gea vs Romero decision

MANCHESTER UNITED face Sevilla on Sunday night for a place in the Europa League final.
And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces a selection headache as he tries to pick between David De Gea and Sergio Romero as his starting goalkeeper.

    2

How Man Utd could line up vs Sevilla
Romero has featured in nine of United’s 11 Europa League games so far this season.
But the Argentine played all the Red Devils’ matches in the League Cup and the FA Cup before the semi-final stage, at which point Solskjaer chose to swap him for De Gea.
The Norwegian will likely do the same again but it is a huge decision given De Gea’s shaky form this season.
At left-back Brandon Williams is a shoe-in thanks to his impressive performances since Luke Shaw’s season ending injury in July.

But at centre-back, Victor Lindelof could replace Eric Bailly who started United’s quarter-final victory against Copenhagen.

    2

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could also surprise some people
Lindelof has not started either of United’s last two games, but was in the starting XI for 10 of their first 11 matches after lockdown.
His 70th-minute introduction against Copenhagen also suggests he could be set for a return to the fold.
At the base of midfield, Nemanja Matic is likely to come back in to replace Fred.

After the Copenhagen win on Monday, Solskjaer said: “Nemanja has always had this calm and influence on the team, and he came on and did really well.”
Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes will start if fit.
As will the fearsome attacking trio of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial – who was man-of-the-match in the quarter-final.

Man Utd aces must remain in hotel ‘bubble’ ahead of Europa semi and use daily walk to visit Podolski’s ice cream parlour

MANCHESTER UNITED stars might be living in a Cologne “bubble” as they plot Europa League glory but that hasn’t stopped them from a trip to Lukas Podolski’s ice cream parlour.
Uefa’s secondary competition is being played out in Germany, with all ties being decided over one leg in a similar manner to the Champions League.

    2

Man Utd stars are currently based in CologneCredit: Getty Images – Getty
United were hoping to be able to fly in and out of Cologne on matchdays, given it is only an hour from Manchester, but Uefa protocol requires them to stay in the city.
This means that should they win the competition, they’ll have been holed up in their Cologne hotel for 13 days – with Goal reporting some unusual rules being in place in order to ensure safety to all involved.
United stars are only allowed to leave their four-star hotel once a day – as players largely remain cooped up in their two allocated floors – and members of the public remaining separate.
Some players have made the best of the odd situation, however, with Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Lee Grant having used their daily trip outside to visit ex-Arsenal winger Podolski’s ice cream parlour.

The former Germany international has a string of business across his homeland including kebab shops and clothing stores.
    STRICT RULES
While United’s heroes may crave tasty treats, their regulated meals are all served within their two floors of the hotel – with even the restaurant off limits.
Hotel staff aren’t permitted to touch their things, with even their laundry having to be done by the club.
Players are being kept entertained by a “games room”, with PlayStations set up – as well as ping-pong tables and even a basketball arcade machine.

And they have been able to use an allocated outdoor bar area in order to mix things up.
Training has taken place at Sportpark Hohenberg, the home of local third-tier side Viktoria Koln.

    2

Bruno Fernandes and Co could sport their new away kit on Sunday

Speaking ahead of their upcoming semi-final with Sevilla, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told MUTV: “They like each other’s company; they have fun in-between the sessions.
“We just have to make the most out of a difficult situation, with the weather as well, because it’s so warm.”
United face Julen Lopetegui’s side on Sunday, with the winner set to take on Inter Milan or Shakhtar Donetsk in the final on Friday.

What happens if Wolves win Europa League? Will Chelsea lose Champions League spot?

THE Premier League may have finally ended, 352 days after it begun all the way back in August last year.
But that doesn’t mean that the drama is quite over yet for the unforgettable 2019-20 season.

But if Wolves were to win the Europa League and clinch a spot in its more illustrious sister competition for next year – would that lead to fourth-placed Chelsea missing out as Spurs did in 2012?
Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have all earned direct entry into next season’s Champions League.
Leicester and FA Cup winners Arsenal will enter the Europa League at the group stage, while Spurs will have to win a qualifying round.
    This could all change, however.

    WOLVES REPRIEVE?
Arsenal’s FA Cup win has bumped Wolves out of Europa League qualification for next season.
But if Wolves were to win the Europa League, however, they would gain direct entry into the Champions League group stage… but NOT at the expense of Chelsea.

Instead, England would have five teams competing in the Champions League – as they did in the 2017-18 season following Manchester United’s Europa League triumph. More

    Team news
Daniel Podence will miss out on this one after earning the penalty that downed former club Olympiacos.
That’s because he picked up a second yellow card of the competition in that fixture.
Jonny Castro Otto will also be out after picking up an injury against the Greeks.

Sevilla have a clean bill of health with the exception of Nemanja Gudelj, who recently tested positive for coronavirus.
