Martial, Rashford and Co give Man Utd spades of attacking flair… but they lack the end product Sancho would bring

MANCHESTER UNITED’S attacking prowess is like a starter and main course of a meal, without the dessert.
Some of the build up play by the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood is simply mouthwatering.

But there is a distinct lack of sweetness – in this case goals.
Yes, Martial has netted 23 times this season, Rashford 22 and Greenwood 17 in all competitions.
But the first two could be in Cristiano Ronaldo hauls of goals for this season if they had taken all their chances.
Whether it’s been heroic defending, losing balance at the vital time or a dodgy decision, United have struggled to really kill off opponents.

We saw it against Copenhagen in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Yes, the Danes’ keeper Karl-Johan Johnsson had an inspired game, but all three United strikers should have netted in normal time of that game.
And again tonight in the 2-1 loss to Sevilla, everything in the build-up was perfect at times, but that killer instinct just wasn’t there.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side should have been home and hosed at half-time against perennial Europa League success-stories Sevilla.

But all they had to show for a host of chances created was a penalty, their 22nd of the season, scored once agains by Bruno Fernandes.
    COOL CUSTOMER SANCHO
Martial was labelled a £100million player by United legends Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves after that Copenhagen game and likened to a Ferrari.
But to really be at that level, he needs to repeat Ronaldo’s 37 goals, Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski’s incredible 54 and Lazio ace Ciro Immobuile’s 37.
One player who shows all the coollness of those player when it comes to taking his chances could be winging his way to Old Trafford.
United are heavily linked with bringing in England star Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
The 20-year-old’s development at Borussia Dortmund has been nothing short of sensational – Manchester City must be raging at letting him leave so easily.
Sancho has netted 20 goals this season, and in this United team who create so much you could see him adding another 10 to that.

If Sancho joins that would mean Rashford, Martial and Greenwood competing for the other two slots.
If that competitions doesn’t tell them to take their chances then nothing will.

Bruno Fernandes rows with Victor Lindelof on pitch after dodgy defending lets unmarked De Jong score Sevilla’s winner

BRUNO FERNANDES and Victor Lindelof had a blazing row on the pitch after Sevilla’s winner in their Europa League semi-final.
Fernandes tore into the Swedish centre-back after his sloppy defending allowed the LaLiga side to go 2-1 up with just 12 minutes remaining.

    2

Victor Lindelof and Bruno Fernandes had a blazing row on the pitch during the Europa League semi-final

    2

The argument erupted after Lindelof’s shoddy defending let Sevilla in to score the winner

Sevilla held on to win and knock United out of their third semi-final of the season.
Luuk de Jong was left totally unmarked in the United box as he ran onto a cross from the right and poked past De Gea.
It was flat-footed and out-of-position Lindelof who took the brunt of the blame.
Andd Portuguese star Fernandes wasted no time in telling him what he thought.

Close up footage showed Fernandes gesticulating and shrugging at Lindelof.
But rather than apologise for his shoddy defending, the under-fire centre-back fired back in aggressive fashion.
He got right up in Fernandes’ face and was seen shouting some pretty angry – yet unrecognisable – words.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not lay the blame on Lindeloff, but admitted the defending was far from good enough.

He told BT Sport: “We should have stopped the cross, we should have cleared the ball when it came into the box.”
While Fernandes, speaking after full-time, played down the row and echoed his boss, insisting the whole team had to iron out mistakes.
Asked about the row, United’s goalscorer on the night said: “It’s normal when you concede.
“It’s not about me or Victor. What happened between me and Victor is normal.
“It will happen many more times in football. We need to see the mistakes everybody did and improve.”

United legend Paul Scholes was critical of Solskjaer’s side’s defending. He said: “You have to say the second goal was shocking. You can almost blame the entire back four.
“Lindelof and Maguire were past the near post and there is only one centre-forward.
“Lindelof’s body angle is all wrong. For me, Lindelof is the biggest problem.”

Bruno Fernandes dubbed ‘pro penalty kick taker’ as cheeky fans edit Man Utd star’s Wikipedia page after Sevilla goal

CHEEKY fans edited Bruno Fernandes’ Wikipedia page to label him a ‘professional penalty taker’ after he netted a spot-kick against Sevilla.
Manchester United were awarded their 22nd penalty of the season just eight minutes into the Europa League semi final defeat, which finished 2-1 to the Spaniards.

    3

Fernandes had his Wikipedia page edited by cheeky fans to read ‘professional penalty kick taker’
Fernandes stepped up to the 12-yard marker before bringing back his trademark hop to lash the ball into the back of the net.
It was the Portugal star’s EIGHTH penalty for United since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January.
And cheeky fans quickly dived into Fernandes’ Wikipedia page to make a tweak to his profile introduction.
The edited entry read: “Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes, born 8 September 1994, is a Portuguese professional penalty kick taker who plays as a penalty kick taker for Premier League club Manchester United and the Portugal national team.”

The edit was up for around an hour before it was changed back to its original format, explaining that Fernandes is a ‘professional footballer’ instead of ‘penalty kick taker’.
Fernandes’ penalty against Sevilla was his 12th goal for United, with the playmaker also bagging eight assists.

Before his Premier League switch, Fernandes got another 13 goals and ten assists during the first half of the season at Sporting.
That’s a grant total of 25 goals and 18 assists since the beginning of the campaign.

Of those goals, 14 have been penalties – eight for United and six for Sporting.

Unfortunately for United, their lead against Sevilla only lasted for 15 minutes before ex-Liverpool and AC Milan winger Suso squeezed in an equaliser.
The Red Devils had numerous chances to retake the lead in the second half but were not clinical in front of goal.
Sevilla then punished them with a winner in the 78th minute through substitute Luuk de Jong.

Man Utd player ratings: Brandon Williams, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof all at sea as United European dream ends

MANCHESTER UNITED lost their third semi-final of the season as Sevilla dumped them out of the Europa League.
Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side with their 22ND penalty of the season.

Luuk de Jong scored the winnerCredit: AFP
Ex-Liverpool man Suso caught United napping – after Chelsea transfer target Sergio Reguilon burst through on the left – to level things up in Cologne.
And super sub Luuk de Jong took advantage of hapless defending from the Red Devils to tap in the winner in the 78th minute to seal a 2-1 win.
Here’s how SunSport’s Josh Graham rated the United performances.
    David De Gea – 5/10
Looked sharp early on and nothing he could do for Suso’s goal.

Outshone by his busier opposite number Bono…not always a bad thing – but badly let down by his defence tonight.
    Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 4
Tricky assignment up against the overlapping left-back Reguilon – who showed why he is attracting plenty of interest.
And sure enough Wan-Bissaka was left in no man’s land for the Sevilla equaliser with Reguilon providing the assist.
Struggled without much help and too quick to dive in off his feet, has to track back with Luuk de Jong for the winner.

    Victor Lindelof – 3

    7

Barely noticed the Swede in the first 45.
Inexcusably nowhere near marking the only man in the box for Sevilla’s second goal.
Let Jesus Navas’ cross float idly by him as United’s European dream crashed and burned.
    Harry Maguire – 5
Penalised unfairly for a terrific towering header before the break.
Demanded his team bring home the trophy pre-game and saw his dreams of lifting the cup shattered by dodgy defending, himself included.
    Brandon Williams – 3

    7

Brandon Williams clutches his face on the floor in CologneCredit: AFP
Rash studs-up challenge earned him a first-half booking and left him putting in half-arsed tackles wary of being given his marching orders.
Woefully caught out way in-field as Suso lingered at the back post for Sevilla’s equaliser.
Embarrassed himself by rolling around clutching his face when there was nothing in a collision with Youssef En-Nesyri.
    Shoddy display.
    Fred – 6
Missed a great early chance to make it 2-0 on his weaker right foot.
Worked well with Paul Pogba in the engine room but became less influential as the game went on.
    Paul Pogba – 7
Passionate display embodied by his wide-eyed remonstrations with the ref after Sevilla equalised.
Beautiful ball to Marcus Rashford right at the end of the first period – could easily have had a number of assists.
    Bruno Fernandes – 8

    7

Stand and deliver or hop, skip and jump – it doesn’t matter.
The trademark technique returned tonight but the end result is seemingly always the same, Bruno Fernandes is ruthless from the spot – EIGHT penalties scored now.
United’s heartbeat and talisman was bundled over by Diego Carlos but the officials decided it wasn’t worthy of a 23rd penalty this season for United and he could have volleyed in a second on the cusp of half-time.
Still pulled the strings in the second half – showed his distaste for Lindelof’s defending by launching a verbal tirade at his centre-back.
    Mason Greenwood – 6
Always plenty of endeavour from the talented youngster going forward.
But could have done more to help Wan-Bissaka with Sevilla rampant down the left.
Super touch gave him a great chance to score immediately after the break as Fernandes set him free only to be denied by the keeper.
    Marcus Rashford – 6
Electric pace in the box was too much for the Sevilla defence who clipped him for the early penalty.
Fed off scraps until Pogba set him free but the nation’s sweetheart got his feet in a right tangle in the last action of the first half.
Frustration showed when he hurled the ball into the ground after being denied a throw and got himself a yellow card for his trouble.
    Anthony Martial – 7

    7

A gorgeous no-look flick pass into Marcus Rashford helped the Red Devils win yet ANOTHER penalty.
Not afraid to throw his weight about trying to hold the ball up for his team.
Silky feet made him unplayable at times after the break – Sevilla’s shot-stopper Bono became his nemesis.
Missed chances came back to haunt his side.

Sevilla 2 Man Utd 1: Dodgy defending costs wasteful Red Devils as they crash out of Europa League

MANCHESTER UNITED suffered semi-final heartbreak again as their Europa League dreams were shattered in Cologne.
After losing in the last four of the EFL Cup to neighbours Manchester City and in the semi-finals of the FA Cup to Chelsea this was almost too much to take.

    9

Bruno Fernandes had given United the lead from the penalty spot on nine minutesCredit: AFP
United took the lead through yet another Bruno Fernandes penalty last night after nine minutes, before Suso grabbed a 26th minute equaliser and sub Luuk de Jong the winner in the 78th.
But they had done everything to score the winner themselves. As on Monday against Copenhagen they found a goalkeeper in inspired form.
Their feared front three of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood could not find the net between them out here in the two games.
So a season that began for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in August 2019 against Chelsea in Manchester finished in Cologne 371 days later with the players in despair and out on their feet.

This was the 61st game of their season.
At least next season they are in the Champions League having finished third in the Premier.
But it will still be a case of what might have been not least out here in Cologne.

De Jong then pounced late on after a counter attack to inflict agony on UnitedCredit: AFP
United had a great start to the match going ahead from that penalty spot through that man Fernandes again – his eighth from the spot out of eight this season.

Marcus Rashford won it, exchanging passes with Anthony Martial before scythed down as he shot by Diego Carlos.
The usual complaint ensued but the decision stood.
Fernandes had not done his trademark jump in scoring from the spot against Copenhagen on Monday.
This time it was there, disguising what he was about to do which was unstoppable as he blasted a shot into the top left-hand corner.
Having started slowly on Monday this was better from United.
Still Solskjaer had warned them that if they switched off for a second against Sevilla they would pay for it and they did.
Lucas Ocampos slid the ball down the line to Sergio Reguilon and Aaron Wan-Bissaka was slow to react.
The cross evaded Harry Maguire, Brandon Williams had lost Suso who turned the ball in at the far post.
Solskjaer had stuck with nine of the ten that needed extra time to beat Copenhagen on Monday.

    9

There was little surprise at Victor Lindelof replacing Eric Bailly after his erratic performance on Monday before the two swapped during the second-half.
However, Sergio Romero will have been left gutted at being left out of a semi-final line up again.
In the FA Cup he played in all the games up to the semi-final against Chelsea then was replaced by David De Gea who then proceeded to have a nightmare as United lost 3-1.
Still De Gea did his job when called upon in the first half with a strong save at his near post from Ocampos early on.
Aside from the goal that was all he had to do in that first period while there were more chances for United at the other end.
Fred fired one wide of the near post.

    9

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have lost THREE semi-finals this seasonCredit: AFP
When Martial was teed up by Paul Pogba on the edge of the area he was unusually off target with a shot well over the bar.
Meanwhile right on half time Rashford was put through but faced in a one on one with a back peddling defender he came off second best.
It was certainly proving to be a fiery affair with tackles flying in from both sides.
Sevilla’s players and bench were calling for a red card for Brandon Williams when he slid in on  Joan Jordan.
The players were constantly in referee Felix Brych’s ear while the benches clashed over a Harry Maguire challenge which Julen Lopetegui claimed was an elbow.
For a match played behind closed doors there was also an awful lot of shouting from some very excitable Sevilla officials in the stand.

    9

A dejected Bruno Fernandes could not believe his side had failed to capitalise on their dominanceCredit: Getty
But it was the United players and officials who had every reason to be confident as their side pounded the Sevilla goal at the start of the second-half.
Copenhagen goalkeeper Karl-Johan Johnsson had an inspired night against United on Monday and Yassine Bounou in the Sevilla net was producing similar heroics.
Just 45 seconds after the restart Fernandes put Mason Greenwood through and his shot to the far corner was blocked by Bounou’s outstretched boot.
Martial was then denied twice in a matter of three minutes first when he hit a thumping far post volley and then Bounou’s feet came to the rescue again when he had a free shot seven yards out.
At this stage United had hit 17 shots to Sevilla’s five.

    9

Those excitable Sevilla officials in the second tier were up again claiming a penalty when a free kick from Joan Jordan hit Fernandes’ elbow.
But he had jumped up with his back to the shot and his arms by his side.
Nemanja Matic stood up where the United sub’s were sitting and shouted back at the Sevilla contingent.
Buoyed by this sense of injustice the Spanish side came again and got the breakthrough.
Former Manchester City star and Sevilla captain Jesus Navas fired over the cross and substitute Luuk de Jong got between Lindelof and Wan-Bissaka to fire home.
Sevilla went mad, United could not believe the turn of events given the chances they had.
They were out, down and out. More

Man Utd defender Harry Maguire played more minutes than ANY player in the world during 2019-20 season

HARRY MAGUIRE played more minutes than any other player in the world during the 2019-20 season.
But the season ended in defeat as Manchester United crashed out of the Europa League after a 2-1 semi-final defeat to Sevilla.

    2

Harry Maguire has clocked up 5,509 minutes of action in the 2019-20 seasonCredit: AFP
The 6ft 4in defender arrived at Old Trafford last summer in a blockbuster £80million transfer.
While the fee raised eyebrows, he didn’t miss a single minute of his side’s 2019-20 Premier League campaign – the first outfielder to achieve such a feat since Gary Pallister in 1994-95.
And boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has almost always leaned on him in the cup competitions too.
With the Red Devils having reached semi-finals of both domestic cups, as well as the latter stages of the Europa League – the games have come thick and fast.

And prior to tonight’s match against Sevilla, Maguire had appeared in 54 of them – as well as a further six for England.
This means that he has played an astonishing total of 5,509 minutes since joining United from the Foxes.
The Manchester United official website appears proud of this fact – pointing out those that Maguire has edged in front of.
Monday’s Europa League quarter-final against FC Copenhagen saw the two most battle-hardened players in the world do battle, with opposition defender Victor Nelsson having played 5,366 minutes.

Unsurprisingly given their season’s July 2019 start, Wolves pair Rui Patricio and Conor Coady come next, joint on 5,310 minutes.
While Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak rounds off the top five with 4,986.
Maguire has only missed six games in all competitions for United this term, with one being the 2-1 defeat to Astana in Kazakhstan.

    Most minutes played 2019-20

    1. Harry Maguire – 5,509 minutes
    2. Victor Nelsson – 5,366 minutes
    3. Rui Patricio – 5,310 minutes
    3. Conor Coady – 5,310 minutes
    5. Jan Oblak – 4,986 minutes

Another two came in the Europa League, in the return Astana fixture and the trip to Alkmaar.
He also sat out of domestic cup ties with Rochdale, Derby and Manchester City.
But such is his commitment, that he even featured in the recent Europa League second leg with LASK, despite his side already leading 5-0.
And quizzed about his captain’s durability, boss Solskjaer said: “First of all, he’s desperate to play, he’s the captain.

    2

Maguire has also played six times for England this seasonCredit: Reuters

“There’s a reason why he’s the captain: he always wants to play, but he’s always ready to play.
“He’s missed one game, two games this season maybe through some illness, and I think he just gets sharper and sharper the more he plays.”
The 27-year-old has also put his body on the line, after it was revealed that he played on for two months with a hip injury after being appointed as club captain.

Watch Bruno Fernandes bring back ‘hop’ penalty as Man Utd get 22ND spot-kick of season in opening 10 mins vs Sevilla

BRUNO FERNANDES reintroduced his trademark hop as Manchester United’s 22nd penalty of the season fired them 1-0 up against Sevilla.
But it was heartbreak for the English side as they lost 2-1 to crash out of Europe.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils were awarded the spot-kick just eight minutes into the Europa League semi final battle.
Marcus Rashford appeared to be fouled in the box following some clever play from Anthony Martial.
VAR was used to check a replay as it looked that Rashford had already fired the ball before being hit.
But the decision was upheld and Fernandes promptly stepped up to the 12-yard marker yet again.

The Portuguese superstar’s late penalty against Copenhagen sent United on their way in the quarters.

But in that match, Fernandes opted not to take a hop before slamming the ball home.
Fans were left wondering if he would take a similar approach against Sevilla.
But Fernandes instead opted to bring back the flashy trick, leaping in the air before firing the ball into the roof of the net.

However, viewers appeared to be undecided about the penalty.
One said: “Embarrassing”, to which someone else replied: “Embarrassing that Rashford got taken out in the box???”
Someone noted: “This has got to be a record.”

Another added: “Makes me laugh, apparently we’re not allowed to be awarded penalties any more.”
Fernades now has 12 goals and eight assists for United despite only joining from Sporting in January.
Before he moved to Old Trafford at the start of the year, Fernandes recorded another 13 goals and ten assists in Portugal.
That’s a grand total of 25 goals and 18 assists for the playmaker since the beginning of the season.

Of those goals, 14 have been penalties – eight for United and six for Sporting.
Unfortunately for United, their lead against Sevilla only lasted for 15 minutes before ex-Liverpool and AC Milan winger Suso squeezed in an equaliser.

Fernandes was then unlucky not to win a penalty himself after being barged over in the area by Diego Carlos.
The Red Devils had numerous chances to retake the lead in the second half but were not clinical in front of goal.

Arsenal and Chelsea dealt transfer blow with ‘Napoli leading race to sign £25m-rated Sergio Reguilon’

ARSENAL and Chelsea may have blown their chances of landing Sergio Reguilon – with the left-back reportedly agreeing to join Napoli.
The sought after Sevilla loanee is said to have an agreement in principle with the Serie A side, according to Calciomercato.

Earlier this week the Blues were revealed to be in pole position ahead of the Gunners in the race to prise Real Madrid star Reguilon away from the La Liga champions.

And FA Cup victors Arsenal were thought to be an option given the Spain international’s links with his new agent Kia Joorabchian.
However, Calciomercato claims Napoli have been in ongoing talks with the 23-year-old’s representatives over the past few days.
And the club, who finished seventh in Italy’s top football tier, are thought to be looking to sign the player for a price between £18million and £22million.

Reguilon is reported to have been keen to prove his worth to Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.
The Madrid starlet scored three times in 36 appearances across all competitions for Sevilla last term.
One of the goals netted by the player was a strike that helped his team beat Roma to reach the Europa League finals this evening where they face Manchester United.

The Bernabeu player made an impressive impact during his loan spell at Sevilla and was named in WhoScored’s La Liga team of the season.

But the defender is thought to be surplus to Zidane’s requirements at Madrid.
Napoli’s Sports Director Cristiano Guintoli is reported to be an admirer of Reguilon, who helped his side keep five clean sheets in their final six LaLiga games of the season.
