Bruno Fernandes breaks silence on row with Man Utd team-mate Victor Lindelof and insists ‘it’s normal, everyone was mad’

BRUNO FERNANDES has played down his on-pitch row with Victor Lindelof as Manchester United crashed out of the Europa League.
The Swedish defender was hammered for losing goalscorer Luuk de Jong as the Dutchman struck a 78th-minute winner for Sevilla in Sunday’s semi-final.

    3

TV cameras picked up the furious argument between the United teammates on the pitch
After the goal, Fernandes was seen lambasting Lindelof, pointing and shouting at his colleague who looked astonished at being blamed, shaking his head and bellowing back at the playmaker.
The matter was dealt with there and then, as 25-year-old Fernandes saw it, and he explained post-game that “everyone” was angry after conceding the goal.
He told BT Sport: “I think it’s normal, you know, when you [concede] a goal in the last [minutes] – we have 10 minutes after to score again.
“Everyone was mad. It’s not about me or Victor, it’s about every team.

“What happened between me and Victor is nothing. It’s normal, it’s football, it happens. It’s looking for each other.
“There will be many more times these things happen in other teams.

But Bruno Fernandes and Co had missed several good chances down the other endCredit: AFP

“The most important thing now is we need to see the mistakes everyone did and look forward to improve in the next games.”
Fernandes had set United on their way to victory in Cologne with the side’s 22nd penalty of the season.

Yet slack defending allowed an unmarked Suso to level from the far-post after 25 minutes.
Still, United had the lion’s share of the chances and Yassine Bounou’s exceptional performance in the Sevilla goal helped consign Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to their third semi-final defeat of the season.

Jadon Sancho posts showboating clip from Dortmund pre-season… while Man Utd are losing to Sevilla in Europa League

JADON SANCHO produced a juicy piece of skill during a thumping Borussia Dortmund pre-season win.
And then he shared the showboating clip just as Manchester United crashed out of the Europa League to Sevilla.

The Englishman then shared the video on social media during Manchester United’s defeat to SevillaCredit: Instagram @bvb09

The England winger and Manchester United transfer target, 20, turned the Austria Wien defender inside out with the tasty move.
Cutting in off the right wing, he rolled the ball with the bottom of his right foot into his left then knocked it past the left-back .
Sancho then ran around him the other way, collecting the ball and setting it back for a team-mate.
The ball eventually broke for Emre Can who put it back in the mixer for Marius Wolf to stab home.

Wolf’s goal made it 7-2 on Sunday afternoon in the pre-season friendly, which Dortmund went on to win 11-2.
Ten different goalscorers found the net, including Sancho, but a lot of the love was coming in for the Three Lions star’s trickery.
Dortmund described their man as “undressing” the opponent and then added: “Oh. My. Days.”
One fan said: “Too much sauce!”

Another added: “Sancho tweeting while his future banter club is losing.”
But a final user commented: “Can’t wait until he does that in red next season.”

However, while Sancho was posting clips of him tearing defenders to shreds, United lost a third cup semi-final of the season.
The Red Devils missed Dortmund’s August 10 transfer deadline for Sancho after failing to meet the Bundesliga club’s £108million asking price.
The Germans insist they will not sell this summer and their player will represent the club next season.

Man Utd had 46 shots against Sevilla and Copenhagen in Europa League mini-league… and only scored two penalties

MANCHESTER UNITED’S poor finishing cost them tasting Europa League glory this season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla in their semi-final clash in Cologne.

    2

But just like in the previous round against Copenhagen, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side missed a whole host of chances to kill the game off.
In these two games, United had FORTY-SIX shots at goal – but have only two scored penalties from Bruno Fernandes to show for it.
Solskjaer was desperate to end the season with some silverware to add to an impressive third-placed finish in the Premier League.
But it is perennial Europa league winners Sevilla who progress through to the final back in Cologne.

Watching the two games, you wouldn’t have thought Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood have shared 62 goals between them.
Speaking to BT Sport about the missed opportunity of silverware, Solskjaer said: “It’s one of them if you take chances you win comfortably – not always the case in football.
“We had moments in spells in both halves where we should have scored a few.
“We have a young team – some spells showed that this group of players will have to learn and get some consistency in their play.

“When we get the ball down and create chances it’s scintillating at times.
“It’s disappointing we didn’t score because we’ve got players with that quality.”

Their keeper did very well, but the quality we have we should have scored
    Bruno FernandesManchester United Midfielder

And Fernandes, the only player to score in both games, added: “[It was] more than a positive start. We played a great game and created a lot of chances.
“But in football it’s not enough – we missed a lot in front of goal.
“We are not satisfied about this because we wanted to go through.
“Their keeper did very well, but the quality we have we should have scored.”
The disappointment could see United push on with their pursuit of Jadon Sancho.
His club Borussia Dortmund insist the 20-year-old winger is going nowhere, but a bid in the excess of £100million could change that.
And United legend Paul Scholes believes United would have beaten Sevilla if they had Sancho in the team.
“We know all this Sancho stuff is going on, they need to spend more money.
“If they want to win trophies, they’ve got to start spending the money.

“They created chances tonight but if you think of Sancho in that team tonight I think United are scoring.”
Scholes believes United lack quality depth in their squad, a problem that can only be solved by spending big cash on star names.
And the 45-year-old has urged old team-mate Solskjaer to keep on pushing, explaining that quality players like Sancho are the only ones who can lift United past their current state and help them win finals.

Man Utd fume as Sevilla WRONGLY awarded throw-in in build-up to goal… but VAR cannot overrule as club crash out

MANCHESTER UNITED were left fuming after they crashed out of the Europa League thanks to a controversial equaliser.
Sevilla levelled after the Spanish club were wrongly awarded a throw-in in the build-up to their equalising goal.

    3

The ball clearly flicked off the hair of Sevilla’s Jules Kounde

And despite VAR being present for the Europa League semi-final clash, it is not used for those decisions.
The ball clearly flicked off the hair of Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, but the assistant flagged the decision in the Spaniards’ favour.
And as often happens in football, a goal was the result of the wrong decision.
Former Liverpool midfielder Suso was the man who swpet the ball home at the far post to tie the game up at 1-1, finishing a cross from impressive Chelsea target Sergio Reguilon.

Okay our defense was absolute crap in the goal but man that ref is having a field day. Our throw in. Kounde touched the ball @ManUtd #mufc #MUNSEV #uel
    — Hjortur T. Halldors. (@HTHalldorsson) August 16, 2020

The likes of Paul Pogba and Harry Maguire protested to referee Felix Brych, but the goal stood.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was not impressed with the decision either.
He said: “It was a throw-in – 100 per cent, but when you don’t get it you can’t stop.
“You know it’s our throw-in but it ends up on other side of pitch at the other end [and they cross it for the goal].”

The Norwegian added: “It’s one of them if you take chances you win comfortably – not always the case in football.
“We had moments in spells in both halves where we should have scored a few.
“We have a young team – some spells showed that this group of players will have to learn and get some consistency in their play.
“When we get the ball down and create chances it’s scintillating at times. The keeper had a fantastic game. It’s disappointing we didn’t score because we’ve got players with that quality.”
United fans took to social media to slam the decision.
Aaran Murphy tweeted: “Ref is terrible should’ve been our throw in.”
Avinash Raina believes VAR SHOULD be able to intervene, posting: “Why on earth is Sevilla’s goal given?!?!
“To begin with, it was Manchester United’s throw in! Why wasn’t this checked with the VAR team?”
Hortjur Halldors was similarly angry with the decision, but also with United’s defence.
He wrote: “Okay our defence was absolute crap in the goal but man that ref is having a field day.

“Our throw in. Kounde touched the ball.”

Harry Maguire admits Man Utd defence were at fault for Sevilla winner… but insists ‘best team lost’

HARRY MAGUIRE admitted the Manchester United defence were to blame for Sevilla’s winner as they were KO’d from the Europa League.
But the £85million skipper insisted the “best team lost” on the night as the Red Devils wasted a hatful of chances to book a spot in the final.

    1

Harry Maguire said the better side lost against SevillaCredit: Getty Images – Getty
Luuk de Jong’s 78th-minute winner left United all at sea at the back with neither Maguire, Victor Lindelof or Aaron Wan-Bissaka picking up the super sub.
It was United’s THIRD semi-final defeat in the 2019-20 season after crashing out at the same stage of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
It is now the first time in 30 years United have gone three consecutive seasons WITHOUT a trophy.
And Maguire had to face the music after the game as his hopes of lifting the Europa League crumbled before him with the 2-1 defeat in Cologne.

He told BT Sport: “It’s difficult. The boys are devastated.
“We created numerous chances. The best team lost.
“They punished us for missing chances. They didn’t make many chances to be honest.
“We conceded from two crosses which is not good enough.

“We worked our socks off and deserved to win and get through.
“We fell short in a semi-final for the third time this year.
“We have a good group of lads. Losing is not acceptable. Getting to semi-finals isn’t acceptable.
“Improvement made this year is massive. We played a good Sevilla team – another day we win it. Losing is not acceptable for this club.”
The former Leicester City man was pressed on when United will finally win silverware – their last trophy coming three years ago when Jose Mourinho led them to Europa League glory.

Maguire added: “It’ll happen soon. We want to win it as soon as possible.
“If we take another giant step next season we’ll improve again. Tonight we turned up and the best team lost.
“Perhaps that bit of inexperience cost us – we shouldn’t have conceded that second goal.”
