Antwerp 3 Rangers 4 – Ibrox side roar back in rollercoaster as two Barisic penalties give them first-leg last 32 lead

THIS was one helluva Royal Rumble.
In Antwerp, Steven Gerrard’s Rangers showed their phenomenal fighting spirit in the Europa League.

Borna Barisic scored two crucial penalties with his second late strike winning this first-leg bout.
Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent hit goals too which went a long way to knocking out the Belgians.
In an extraordinary night of football the home side made Gerrard’s men sweat for the victory – but the end result was no more than the Ibrox side deserved.
This victory came at a close with the loss of James Tavernier to injury a cruel twist of fate for the luckless Ibrox skipper.

Before flying out of Glasgow on Wednesday afternoon Gerrard had dismissed a report which questioned the full-back’s fitness.
Tavernier himself even mocked the story on social media.
But after 20 minutes here the defender picked up a knee injury which saw him limp off the park.
The damage was done in a block challenge which appeared to open up his medial ligament.

Tavernier tried to bravely battle on after initially receiving treatment from the Rangers physios.
But the next time he touched the ball he dropped to the deck realising his night was prematurely over.
Experienced centre-back Leon Balogun stepped off the bench to take his place with Gerrard suddenly left ruing the absence of kid right-back Nathan Patterson who was back home self-isolating after stupidly going to a house party at the weekend.
This should have been his chance to go out and grab.

Rangers, though, looked like they would shake off the early blow as they took the lead after 38 minutes.
Antwerp keeper Alireza Safar Beiranvand blundered when he spilled the ball after Kemar Roofe burst into the box after a searching pass from Conor Goldson from the back.
Alfredo Morelos did well to nick the ball to Aribo and he showed real composure to pass cooly into the net.
It was looking so good for Rangers at that stage of the game.
They were playing well and attacking dangerously whenever they got bodies into the final third.
But Antwerp managed to draw level in 44 minutes before incredibly taking the lead in stoppage time at the end of the first-half.
Their equalise was poor from a Rangers perspective.

Barisic bangs in the first of his two penaltiesCredit: PA:Press Association
It came from a simple free-kick delivered into the box which saw Barisic lose his man with striker Felipe Avenatti free to nod past Allan McGregor.
Gerrard would have just wanted to get his men back into the away changing room there and then.
But in the SIXTH minute of added-on time the Belgians stormed ahead.
The goal came from the penalty spot after Steven Davis clipped Lion Refaelov’s heel inside the box.
The contact was minimal but the Israeli collapsed in a heap with Bulgarian referee Georgi Kabakov buying it.
Refaelov himself took the kick to slam past McGregor.

Rangers had an early shout for a penalty themselves when there appeared to be a handball inside the Antwerp box, but the Belgians escaped.
Things just seemed to go against Gerrard’s men before the break.
They also lost Roofe to injury as he limped off to be replaced by Kent.
The winger had travelled to Belgium nursing a knock which the Ibrox boss wanted to protect.
But when he went on he was in the mood to make things happen in the second-half with Rangers soon level.
Again the goal came from the penalty spot.
It required a VAR decision with the hopeless whistler missing a clear dug on Morelos’ jersey by defender Ritchie de Laet.
Play raged on before the official was urged to stop the game and look at the TV monitor at the side of the pitch which showed his error.
With normal spot-kick taker Tavernier missing, Barisic stepped up on his 100th Rangers appearance to make it 2-2 with a left-foot effort the Antwerp keeper almost saved.

Gerrard’s men looked good to go on and win the game from there.
But in 66 minutes they were hit with a sucker punch as Martin Hongla squeezed a shot in off the post from the edge of the Rangers box.
McGregor stood rooted as the ball flew past him but there was nothing he could have done to keep it out.
With ten minutes to go sub Ianis Hagi missed a great opportunity to make it 3-3 with an effort he turned wide.

Barisic’s first penalty makes it past the goalkeeperCredit: PA:Press Association
But in 82 minutes Kent showed how it should be done.
He danced into the box, twisting and turning, before blasting into the net.
But the drama wasn’t over. Far from it. The final few minutes were end to end with both sides going for it.
Kent could have won game after being stabbed through but this time his shot was blocked by the keeper.
Then in the dying seconds Antwerp had one shot saved brilliantly by the outstanding McGregor and another effort cleared off the line.

Rangers weren’t finished, though, and sensationally won the game in incredible circumstances.
After breaking forward Kent had a shot blocked by stopper Abdoulaye Seck inside the box with the referee spotting an arm was used.
The defender was sent off with Barisic keeping his cool to blast home his second penalty of the night to give Rangers a magnificent win.

    GOODNIGHT FROM ROME
That’s all from the Italian capital on a night where there was nothing to separate Benfica and Arsenal as the sides played out a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico.
The Gunners may have lost their 100% European record this season, but they are more than alive in this tie as they prepare for the second leg in Athens next Thursday.
    Thanks for reading, and goodnight.

    CAPTAIN’S LOG
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has taken to social media to congratulate Bukayo Saka on his goal, and hold his hands up as to his missed chances.
Thankfully, no photos of his new tattoo this time.

    SAKA SPEAKS
Arsenal teenager Bukayo Saka again produced a performance beyond his years, but was a frustrated figure at full time as his side failed to capitalise on their dominance to register a first leg lead.

We had a lot of chances and we’re frustrated. We dominated the game and they just had a lucky penalty which I don’t think should have been given. However, it’s not the worst result and we have got an away goal.

Bukayo Saka was Arsenal’s goalscorer – but frustrated not to end on the winning side.

    ODEGAARD EXCITES
Martin Odegaard was certainly one of the bright spots for Arsenal in Rome this evening, playing in that creative hole behind the forward line.
The Real Madrid loanee ended the game with 92% success rate for completing pass and created three key opportunities.

Martin Ødegaard completed 30 passes in the opposition half vs. Benfica, more than any other Arsenal player. An excellent showing on his Arsenal #UEL debut. ✨ pic.twitter.com/oP8e2tXRy3

    ADVANTAGE ARSENAL?
The Gunners may not have got the positive result they would have wanted, but can take heart that history is on their side when it comes to capitalising on an unbeaten first leg away from home.
However, they have never before played the home return on a neutral ground without supporters in attendance.

13 – Arsenal have progressed from 13 of their previous 16 knockout ties in major UEFA competition when either drawing or winning the first leg away from home, though one of their eliminations did come at this exact stage of the Europa League last season vs Olympiakos. Vigilant.

    OH AUBA
The drop in Arsenal’s performance from the weekend was perhaps epitomised by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s evening.
The Arsenal captain failed to build on Sunday’s hat-trick, was too often on the peripherals, and was guilty of an awful miss midway through the first half.

    ARSENAL OFF COLOUR AND OFFSIDE
After running riot against Leeds on Sunday, it was a frustrating night for Arsenal’s attackers.
Time and time again, the Gunners forward line found themselves thwarted by the offside flag as they looked to penetrate the Benfica defence.
Their ten offside calls are the most by an Arsenal team in over seven years.

Arsenal were caught offside 10 times against Benfica. They were caught offside more times than they had shots (7).

    FT: BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
It ends level at the Stadio Olimpico. A competitive game short on chances burst into life in the space of three second half minutes. First, Benfica captain Pizzi converted from the spot after Emile Smith Rowe had handled, but moments later, Bukayo Saka equalised by thumping home Cedric’s cross. It’s all to play for in Athens.

PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!THE FULL TIME WHISTLE IS BLOWN IN ROME!

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
90+4. Xhaka ends the second half just as he did the first: with a hopeless, aimless crossfield ball.
Thankfully this one doesn’t play his team into trouble, and the game is going to end all square.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    90. Mohamed Elneny is on in what seems like the 482nd substitution of the game. Off goes Dani Ceballos.
Oh, and Willian is on too. Make that 483. Martin Odegaard makes way.
There will be four minutes of stoppage time played.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    89. Sound the Arsenal offside klaxon!

Arsenal now caught offside 10 times – the most in a game since November 2013.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    88. Benfica are playing keep ball. I’m not sure we’re going to see much more in the way of goalmouth action.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    86. Both teams may now have settled for the draw ahead of next Thursday’s return game in Athens.
A reminder that although these two ties are being played on neutral grounds, away goals do count.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    84. Verissimo is indeed unable to continue, and so Jorge Jesus alters his change with Chiquinho introduced instead.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    82. Benfica are set to introduce Gilberto, but are holding fire on the change because of an injury to Verissimo.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    80. There are now more Gabriels on the pitch than in a Hertfordshire boarding school.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    77. Some more changes for the final stages.
Mikel Arteta throws on Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Martinelli for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Emile Smith Rowe.
In the home ranks, Adel Taarabt is replaced by Gabriel.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    75. It’s not Aubameyang’s night.
The forward looks as though he’s finally going to get his name on the scoresheet as he outpaces Verissimo, but opts to check back and is promptly tackled by the Brazilian debutant.
The centre-back’s intervention nearly catches out his compatriot Helton, who had come rushing off his line, but there’s not enough pace on the ball to truly worry the home side with the goalkeeper comfortably diving on the danger.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    73. Much better from Everton!
The substitute goes close to restoring Benfica’s lead with a burst down the left followed by a curling towards the far corner. Inches wide!

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    71. Arsenal are pushing, probing and pressurising Benfica.
A lovely Smith Rowe cross is brilliantly cut out by Verissimo before the presence of Tierney wins the visitors another corner.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    69. Benfica substitute Everton may not be up to speed with the game yet, and is easily dispossessed with a number of teammates well placed.
It’s the worst Everton performance since the Fulham game last weekend.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    67. After looking so stale a couple of months ago, this attacking Arsenal three behind Aubameyang is exciting and full of young energy.
Saka, Smith Rowe and Odegaard have all caught the eye at times tonight.

    BENFICA 1-1 ARSENAL
    64. It’s substitution time.
Kieran Tierney is on for Cedric, so soon after the departing full-back had provided an assist for Saka.
Also off is Benfica’s goalscorer, Pizzi. The captain is replaced by Haris Seferovic while Everton is also on for Darwin Nunez.

Arsenal ratings: Odegaard and Saka impress but Aubameyang costs Gunners in Europa League draw with Benfica

ARSENAL were left hoping for more after claiming a 1-1 draw with Benfica on Thursday.
Bukayo Saka levelled after a Pizzi penalty put the Portuguese side in front after an Emile Smith Rowe handball.

But there were chances to snatch the away leg of their Europa League last-32 tie, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang guilty of a couple of misses.
Here, SunSport’s Jordan Davies delivers his individual ratings from the 1-1 draw.
    BERND LENO – 7
Had very little to do all night, and will be disappointed that he was unable to keep out the second-half penalty. He dived the correct way, but was a fraction of a second too late.
    HECTOR BELLERIN – 6
His driving runs forward in the first half got Arsenal up the pitch, but remains a worry when it comes to the final pass, or in fact making the right pass. Bellerin’s leadership cannot be questioned, but his ability on the ball in the final third can.

    GABRIEL – 7
After a nervy return to the starting XI following his positive coronavirus test, the Brazilian looks to finally be getting back to his best. Very rarely looks unsettled, and is building a nice partnership with his compatriot beside him.

Gabriel put in a confident performance as he gets some form under his beltCredit: Getty Images – Getty
    DAVID LUIZ – 7
A much-welcomed scare-free night from the veteran defender – and one which is becoming more and more common as he settles as Arteta’s experienced head. There is always a chance he will lose his head, but tonight was not one of them.
    CEDRIC SOARES – 7
With Benfica sitting narrow and deep, Cedric had plenty of chances to deliver and in the second half one connected as Saka tapped home his cross. In the absence of Kieran Tierney he has performed well, and done his chances of starting the next couple of games with the Scot returning little harm.
    DANI CEBALLOS – 8
Another game and another reason why Thomas Partey should not expect his return to the Arsenal starting XI to be a given. His creativity from deep and abstract style compared to Xhaka gave Arsenal a good balance in midfield, and came close to providing several openers with his passing.

Dani Ceballos continued his strong run in the side of lateCredit: Getty Images – Getty
    GRANIT XHAKA – 7
A solid performance from a man so depended on now by Arteta, and provided Arsenal with protection on the counter. His only misplaced pass before half time could have cost his side as it allowed Benfica to have one more attack. Luckily for him, they didn’t take it.
    BUKAYO SAKA – 8
An instinctive finish topped off another fine evening for the English winger, and perhaps could have had more in a game littered with chances. A dragged effort just before his second-half leveller would have earned him a deserved double, and was a marked man throughout with Jan Vertonghen throwing a few tackles his way.
    EMILE SMITH ROWE – 7
He looked as though the intense schedule has caught up with him with some heavy legs on the Stadio Olimpico turf, but he still managed some moments of magic. His link-up play was matched only by his work rate, dropping deep to help build attacks.

Emile Smith Rowe conceded the penalty on an otherwise decent display in RomeCredit: Getty Images – Getty
    MARTIN ODEGAARD – 8
His influence on this Arsenal attack is growing by the game, and this was no exception on a grand European stage. His runs in the pockets off the front men proved difficult for the Benfica defence to manage, and his pinpoint through ball created the leveller.
    PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG – 6
Missed several chances to hand Arsenal an important away win, including a sitter from six yards in the first-half. He may have bagged a hat-trick against Leeds, but the striker remains lacking that fine cutting edge fans are used to seeing.

Watch Martin Odegaard’s brilliant first-time through-ball before Bukayo Saka’s leveller for Arsenal against Benfica

MARTIN ODEGAARD produced a brilliant pass in the build-up to Arsenal’s equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Benfica.
The Norwegian, on loan from Real Madrid, split the Portuguese side’s defence with a cheekily crisp through-ball to Cedric in the 57th minute.

Martin Odegaard played a brilliant first-time pass in the build-up to Arsenal’s equaliser against BenficaCredit: Reuters

The left-back then swept a low cross along the face of the goal for Bukayo Saka to fire home.
The lovely piece of play occurred just two minutes after a penalty from Pizzi put Benfica in front.
The match stats will have Saka and Cedric down for the goal and assist.
But it was Odegaard’s bit of magic that really made the equaliser happen, allowing Arsenal to instantly get back into the Europa League tie and rescue the draw.

Should the 22-year-old continue to impress, Mikel Arteta will surely be eager to turn his loan from Real into a permanent stay.
Indeed, Odegaard has already revealed he is open to joining Arsenal on a long-term deal this summer.
He said: “You never know what happens, but first of all my focus is about the rest of the season.
“Hopefully I will help the team and then we’ll see what happens.”

However, reports claim Real Madrid chiefs are not happy with Odegaard’s comments.
Los Blancos apparently have no intention of selling him at the end of the season.
And they did not include a permanent transfer option in Odegaard’s loan to prove their intent.

Arsenal verdict: Dani Ceballos has Gunners creating but misfiring strikers must find target

ARSENAL’S creative hub is brimming with excitement – and it all starts with Dani Ceballos.
Now all they need to do is find their clinical edge as they return to north London knowing their 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico was a missed opportunity.

The Spaniard showed his presence again in the draw with BenficaCredit: AFP OR LICENSORS

Mikel Arteta opted to name an unchanged XI for a European game following a league match for the first time since 2015 after demolishing Leeds at the weekend.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed a hat-trick, and the performances of Emile Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard shone through.
But it has gone unnoticed how the Real Madrid loanee Ceballos is allowing them to tick with his infectious work rate, demanding presence, and bravery on the ball.
He grabbed an assist against Leeds, and was at his assertive and direct best against Benfica – let down by some poor finishing by the Gunners’ normally reliable front men.

With the injury to Thomas Partey keeping the £45m man out of action, the spot alongside the more robust, stand-still and protective Granit Xhaka has been available.
And Ceballos has taken it with open arms, hence why Arteta now trusts the Spaniard in his midfield to start attacks and occupy opposition presses with his quick turns on the ball, as well as his ambition to run forward into spaces with and without the ball.

    — Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) February 18, 2021

Since arriving on loan from Madrid at the start of last season, his time in north London has been littered with moments like this, but bogged down by inconsistent displays around it.

It seems now that after 18 months at the Emirates, we are finally seeing the Ceballos that was tipped in his teenage days as Spain’s brightest and most talented midfield maestro.
It is why he has started six of Arsenal’s last seven games in all competitions.
And if reports are to be believed, £25m to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future would be some bargain.
That talent was on show in Rome as Ceballos opened up Benfica’s experienced defence with cutting through balls in the first-half.
It was one of these balls from deep that set Hector Bellerin into the box before Aubameyang somehow skewed his effort from six yards wide.

Bukayo Saka hit the equaliser in Arsenal’s 1-1 drawCredit: Getty Images – Getty

And in the second-half – minutes before their leveller – his cute back-heeled flick higher up the pitch provided Saka with a chance he normally buries.
As Arsenal fought for the winner, his ability to mix it physically proved helpful in midfield too.
But it’s his trickery with his feet, like the young stars ahead of him, that now sees him a key cog in Arteta’s ever-improving machine.

Benfica 1 Arsenal 1: Saka gets crucial away goal for Gunners but Aubameyang may rue missed chances

ARSENAL surrendered their 100 per cent Europa League record in Rome but head to Athens next week convinced they are still on course for a place in the last 16.
Bukayo Saka’s 57th minute equaliser leaves this unique tie with no home advantage perfectly poised.

Saka tucked the ball home from Cedric Soares’ cross across the boxCredit: Reuters

Covid restrictions meant that neither Benfica nor the Gunners were allowed to host their opponents at their own ground.
So Uefa have settled for the Italian and Greek capitals as neutral venues for this battle of these two fallen European giants.
The last time Arsenal played in the Stadio Olimpico they won a thrilling penalty shoot-out on their way to the 2009 Champions League semi-finals.
And prior to that Thierry Henry scored a memorable hat-trick to silence 70,000 stunned Roma fans back in 2002.

But those glory days of competing for club football’s biggest prize are long gone for the Gunners and now they find themselves scrapping it out in Europe’s secondary competition for a fourth successive year.
Boss Mikel Arteta is still haunted by the memory of last season’s exit at the same stage of this competition, when they conceded in the last minute of extra-time to go out on away goals to Olympiacos.
So he was taking no chances this time, fielding his strongest possible team despite Sunday’s impending Premier League clash with runaway leaders Manchester City.
It meant the same line-up which had beaten Leeds last weekend, the first time since September 2018 that Arsenal had named an unchanged side.

That was tough to take for the kids who had served Arsenal so well in the group stage this season, winning all six of their games while scoring 20 goals in the process.
But with so much riding on progression in this competition, Arteta could not afford any room for sentiment.
Benfica were certainly a step up in class from anything that Arsenal had faced in their group games and certainly weren’t going to make life easy for Arteta.
The former Portuguese champions were chock-full of experience, with former Spurs stars Jan Vertonghen and Adel Taarabt and ex-City defender Nicolas Otamendi all giving coach Jorge Jesus the inside track on their opponents.
Yet their lack of pace at the back was always going to be a source of opportunity for Arsenal and they should have gone ahead in the 19th minute when Hector Bellerin laid one on a plate for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
But with the goal at his mercy Arsenal’s captain and top scorer steered his shot the wrong side of the past from two yards out.
It was an extraordinary miss by any standards and all the more remarkable in light of Auba’s predatory hat-trick against Leeds four days earlier.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang couldn’t believe it when he missed a sitterCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Aubameyang shot wide from just a few yards outCredit: Getty Images – Getty
Another decent opportunity went begging five minutes from the break when Martin Odegaard and Dani Ceballos tried to walk the ball in but overcomplicated things and ended up failing to get a shot off.
And Arsenal were fortunate to make it to the half-time interval still on level terms when Granit Xhaka’s suicidal pass across his own penalty area was picked off by Alejandro Grimaldo.
Fortunately for Xhaka, Ceballos was able to scramble the ball to safety before Benfica were able to inflict any serious damage.
It was the first time all evening that the home team had offered any kind of threat to Bernd Leno’s goal.
Yet for all Arsenal’s dominance they were creating precious few chances of their own and that lack of urgency came back to bite them in the 54th minute.
A quick corner caught them napping and when Diogo Golcaves drilled a cross into the raised arm of Emile Smith Rowe, referee Cuneyt Cakir pointed straight to the spot and ‘Pizzi’ Fernandes made no mistake from 12 yards.
But the response from the visitors was swift and decisive and within three minutes they were back on level terms when Odegaard opened up the Benfica defence and Saka swept home from Cedric’s cross.

Jose Mourinho hints Gareth Bale may have earned Prem start for Tottenham with goal and assist in Europa League

GARETH BALE could be handed a Premier League reprieve after his starring role against Wolfsberger.
Jose Mourinho handed the Welshman his first start since the pair fell out over an Instagram post earlier in the month.

The recent FA Cup defeat to Everton was missed by Bale, who appeared to assert his fitness online to dispute Mourinho’s reasoning for dropping him.
But the player is back in his manager’s good books after a goalscoring performance in the Europa League.
And Bale could even stay in the side for Tottenham’s trip to West Ham on Sunday.
Mourinho told reporters: “I know that the match is already Sunday at 12pm but I believe that he has a chance to play the match, let’s wait.

“He’s the kind of player also who is experienced and his feelings are a very important thing, like Harry Kane.
“I believe for him it was important to play and not to play the full 90 minutes.”
Bale played 65 minutes on the right of Mourinho’s attack and crossed for Son Heung-min’s stooping header for the opener on 13 minutes.
Later in the first-half, the Real Madrid loanee got the better of his marker once again, this time cutting back to fire home with his left foot.

Goals from Lucas Moura and Carlos Vinicius set Spurs up for a place in the last-16, with a 4-1 win in the away leg of the tie.
Dele Alli was another unfavoured player handed a starting berth at the Puskas Arena.
After the win, Mourinho praised both the midfielder and Bale for helping secure the first leg advantage.
He added: “We had a result and we had a team performance.
“I believe they were positive like the team was. I took Gareth off. I know in this process it was not so easy to play the 90 minutes.
“Dele worked hard. He got a yellow card and with the referee giving yellow cards so easily to us I didn’t want to risk it [and substituted him].”

Arsenal stunned as Aubameyang misses open-goal sitter in Europa League draw with Benfica

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG shocked Arsenal fans with a poor miss in the early stages of the 1-1 draw with Benfica.
The Gunners were hoping to see their club captain continue his incredible display from the weekend, when he struck a hat-trick past Leeds.

But the away leg of their Europa League tie with the Lisbon club started ominously on Thursday night.
Hector Bellerin raced down the right on 19 minutes and slipped a cool pass across goal that begged for a finish.
With the net gaping, Aubameyang met the cross but placed his left-footed shot wide of the near-post.
The 31-year-old looked to the sky immediately after the miss, slapping his hands on his thighs in frustration.

He later wrote on Twitter: “We deserved better and I should score couple goals today but still one game to go we keep going.”
Aubameyang then singed out goalscorer Bukayo Saka for praise.
It was only the star forward’s second outing in the Europa League all season, having been rested for most of the group stage.
And there have been signs of form from Aubameyang in recent weeks after a long dry spell over Christmas.

The Leeds hat-trick on Sunday made it six goals in his last six appearances going into the Rome encounter.
But Aubameyang’s night ended early when Mikel Arteta hooked his star striker, who was substituted for Nicolas Pepe after firing wide from a good one-on-one position in the second-half.
Arsenal were chasing a winner after pulling level against Benfica.
An Emile Smith Rowe handball allowed Pizzi to open the scoring from the spot before Bukayo Saka levelled with a close-range finish.
