Granada 0-2 Man Utd LIVE RESULT: Rashford and Bruno Fernandes penalty put United in Europa League command

MANCHESTER UNITED are edging closer to Europa League glory after a big 2-0 win over Granada.Goals from Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes (pen) have put the Red Devils in a strong position for the return leg at Old Trafford.
    THAT’S ALL FROM ANDALUSIA
Manchester United will return to England with a comfortable two-goal lead that has them 90 minutes away from an 18th European semi-final.
Goals from Marcus Rashford, who converted Victor Lindelof’s impressive long pass in the first half, and Bruno Fernandes, scorer of a weak penalty in the final minute, have United deservedly in control of the tie..
The advantage should allow Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to field some of his second string in the second leg next week – which is probably just as well seeing as three of his first teamers in Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay have been ruled out through suspension.
That’s all from us, but if you’re looking for something else before bed, here’s Neil Custis’ match report from Nuevo Los Carmenes.
    Goodnight.
    SOLSKJAER REACTION
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was delighted with the professionalism of his players in recording a 2-0 away win at Granada, but was left to rue the yellow cards that will keep three of his defensive players out of the return at Old Trafford next week.
It’s not a perfect night. We got three yellow cards and it means three suspensions for the next game, but a 2-0 win is a very good result. We know how difficult it is coming to Spain, and we have to play well to get these kind of results. [Our approach for the second leg will be] the same, we want to win every game of football. It’s a young team that is learning all the time. In football, it can catch you so quickly if you rest and we cannot have any approach other than to go forward and score goals – especially at home.Ole Gunnar SolskjaerBT Sport

    RED DEVILS RATED
Find out who shone in Spain, and who failed to impress with our player ratings from Manchester United’s match with Granada.
Rashford showed no sign of the ankle problem that threatened to keep him out of this game but was taken off just past the hour mark with his team looking comfortable.
    THE PORTUGUESE PENALTY KING
It wasn’t his best strike from the spot, but Bruno Fernandes’ late penalty was his 19th successful attempt since joining Manchester United.

    FULL TIME STATS
United dominated in Spain without ever really getting into first gear. The Red Devils had twice as much possession as their opponents, and clocked more than double the amount of passes.

    FULL TIME RESULTS
In tonight’s other Europa League quarter-final first legs:

    Arsenal 1-1 Slavia Prague
    Ajax 1-2 Roma
    Dinamo Zagreb 0-1 Villarreal

A reminder that the winners of Granada and Manchester United will play either Ajax or Roma in the semi-finals.
    FT: GRANADA 0-2 MAN UTD
Manchester United have one foot in the Europa League semi-finals after a comfortable 2-0 win in southern Spain. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s team were far from their best but got the job done thanks to Marcus Rashford’s goal in the first half and a Bruno Fernandes penalty at the death. It means a comfortable cushion for the second which the Red Devils will have to play without the suspended trio of Scott McTominay, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire.
    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!THE FULL TIME WHISTLE GOES!
    GRANADA 0-2 MAN UTD
90+3. There’s a glimpse of goal for Granada in the third of four added minutes, but Suarez is penalised for a foul on Maguire at the vital moment.
    GRANADA 0-2 MAN UTD
    90. In the final minute of the match, Manchester United bag the second goal that should ultimately see them into the semi-finals.
There’s a touch of good fortune in both the taking of the penalty and in its award, but followers of the Old Trafford club will not care.
Bruno Fernandes gets himself on the scoresheet for the 24th time this season, but the Portuguese midfielder was afforded a helping hand by his compatriot in the Granada goal.
Fired low to his right, Rui Silva got down low and quickly to meet Fernandes’ strike, only to push it into the net.
There looked little in the challenge that led to Artur Dias pointing to the spot with Fernandes going down easily following a hand in the face from Yan Brice as they jostled for a cross in the box.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!BRUNO FERNANDES SQUEEZES IN A SECOND!!
BRUNO FERNANDES GOES DOWN IN THE BOX!PENALTY TO MANCHESTER UNITED!
    GRANADA 0-1 MAN UTD
    86. Roberto Soldado goes off and Luis Suarez comes on. Don’t worry, it’s not that one.
    GRANADA 0-1 MAN UTD
    85. Donny Van de Beek is on for the final minutes in Spain. The Dutchman replaces Mason Greenwood.
    GRANADA 0-1 MAN UTD
    84. Matic is yellow carded for an aerial challenge with Puertas.
Both sets of players are furious; Granada’s because they believe Matic led with an elbow, United’s because they feel there was nothing in it.
I’m with the latter, there looked little in it once again.
    GRANADA 0-1 MAN UTD
    83. Granada survive by the skin of their teeth.
Fernandes gets in behind on the overlap, taking James’ pass in his path, and tries to slip a shot beyond Rui Silva.
A touch from the goalkeeper and a block from captain Victor Diaz manage to keep out, not just Fernandes’ effort but two follow-up shots.
As it is, Fernandes looks to have been a yard offside on the replays.
    GRANADA 0-1 MAN UTD
    81. Machis shows fresh energy to pinch the ball off of Wan-Bissaka and drive forward.
The substitute has little in the way of options so goes for goal himself from distance, clattering a shot into Lindelof and behind.
    GRANADA 0-1 MAN UTD
    79. German takes two bites of the cherry to deter Fernandes. The substitute cuts out a lofted pass intended for the Manchester United with one header, and then, following up, clears to safety with a second.
    GRANADA 0-1 MAN UTD
    77. Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani nearly bring a touch of South American class to what has been a pretty turgid affair.
The left-back sends in a scintillating cross which the Uruguayan fails to read until it’s too late to reach it.
    GRANADA 0-1 MAN UTD
    75. A double change for the Spaniards. Dimitri Foulquier and Darwin Machis are on with Carlos Neva and Kenedy making way.
    GRANADA 0-1 MAN UTD
    73. A third United sub sees Nemanja Matic replace Paul Pogba. The Serbian’s arrival usually means it’s time to shore up and settle for what we’ve got.
    GRANADA 0-1 MAN UTD
    71. And another one! Harry Maguire is the latest to be ruled out of the second leg through suspension. The Manchester United captain joins Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay in picking up a yellow card that brings a one-match ban.
In truth, there was little in his challenge on Soldado, but the centre-back pays a heavy price for getting on the wrong side of his man.

    GRANADA 0-1 MAN UTD
    69. Over on the right, Herrera follows Kenedy’s lead. The midfielder makes room for his space to travel inside the area, but ends up dragging his shot so wide that it stays in play.
In fact, Grenada manage to keep the attack alive, and when the ball is recycled into the box, it’s Herrera again on the end of it it. The Manchester City loanee takes a heavy touch, and then thumps a shot high over the crossbar.

Man Utd verdict: David De Gea gets nod over Dean Henderson as No1 battle takes puzzling turn

SO who is Manchester United’s number one then? That was the question asked by Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes when the team-sheet dropped last night.
David De Gea started in goal for Man Utd against GranadaCredit: Getty
But with Dean Henderson on the bench it is still unclear who is United’s No 1Credit: Getty
And it would have been echoed by thousands of Red Devils fans around the world.
Most importantly, does Ole Gunnar Solskjaer know for sure who he wants in goal for the biggest games?
On Sunday evening, it looked as though Dean Henderson’s long wait to be first choice with his boyhood club was finally over.
Having played the last six matches before the international break, he then got the nod against Brighton.
And normally the goalie who plays in the Premier League would be viewed as the owner of the shirt.
But four days later, when the team was named for this game in Andalucia, it was David De Gea who got the nod.
Logic would dictate that this is the bigger game in terms of salvaging United’s season.
Barring a dramatic slump, they will finish in the top four to seal a return to the Champions League next season. They will surely end up second or third next month.
GRAND NATIONAL: GET £200 IN FREE BETS FOR FESTIVAL AT AINTREE

And they need a miracle if they are to catch runaway leaders Manchester City, who are 14 points clear at the top.
So the Europa League is United’s one realistic chance of ending their four year wait for a major trophy.
In terms of outfield players, it looked like the strongest available side had been selected by Solskjaer against the unfancied Spaniards.
And – somewhat puzzlingly – De Gea was back in goal.
The United boss says he has two number ones and that he’s going to find matches for each of them.
But his former team-mate Scholes didn’t pull any punches by saying he is ‘clearly wrong’ to think like that.
The ex-England international recalled the six years United spent around the Millennium trying to settle on the right man between the sticks.
He probably still shudders when he thinks of Fabien Barthez, Mark Bosnich, Roy Carroll, Tim Howard Andy Goram, Paul Rachubka, and Massimo Taibi among others.
    ‘ALWAYS AWKWARD’
He said: “I think it’s always awkward when you’re trying to keep two goalkeepers happy.
“I was in a team that tried to replace Peter Schmeichel for years. It wasn’t until we got Edwin van der Sar, five or six years later, until it seemed to settle down again.”
Solskjaer was in that team too, of course – yet he seems to be making hard work of making the decision.
He put De Gea back in goal in his homeland and starting a game for United for the first time in almost six weeks.
Last month he became a father for the first time and was handed extended leave by his manager to go and make the most of it.
He was given more time off than he needed – or wanted – but Henderson had been told he would get the six games leading up to the international break.
When he got a seventh, on Sunday, it looked like De Gea’s decade as first choice could be over.
Yet some – Scholes included – believe Henderson has not yet done enough to justify his promotion.
    ‘COULD’VE BEEN MID-TABLE WITHOUT HIM’
It was a gentle way for De Gea to ease himself back into it in the Estadio de Los Carmenes despite the efforts of the spirited hosts.
He was given a scare when on loan Manchester City man Yangel Herrera cracked a shot against the outside of the post.
And he got down well to save as Kenedy – who is still on the books at Chelsea – fired a textbook volley from the edge of the box.
Early in the second half he had to get his positioning spot on to keep out another effort from the Brazilian – but all in all it was a quiet night.
He has not been perfect over the last 12 months but Scholes believes it is too early to dump him on the bench.
The former Oldham boss said: “You have to say, David is a quality keeper, the service he’s given to United, what he did for four or five years when United were really struggling.
“They could’ve been a mid-table team without him, he’s lost a bit of form and a bit of confidence, but I wouldn’t write him off.”

Man Utd win delayed by STREAKER despite Europa League clash with Granada being held behind closed doors

MANCHESTER UNITED’s behind-closed-doors win in Spain was somehow held up by a STREAKER.No fans were allowed in for the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Granada on Thursday night – a game United won 2-0 thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.

And took a fall before being caught by Spanish policeCredit: Rex
But that didn’t stop one fan from getting into the Estadio Municipal Nuevo Los Carmenes.
And he ran right across the middle of the pitch early on, causing a delay in the last-eight tie.
But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were only briefly held up as Spanish police moved in to escort the man away.
Thursday’s match was one of the biggest in Granada’s history.
And their fans gathered on the streets to welcome their team before the game with the stadium still closed.
United boss Solskjaer fielded a strong side featuring Harry Maguire, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford.
And Rashford opened the scoring for United, latching onto a pinpoint long-range pass from Victor Lindelof to race through on goal and slot home.
A spirited Granada side were in the tie throughout – and United were only allowed to breathe a little easier when Bruno Fernandes scored a second late on.

He slotted home a 90th-minute penalty – to make it 11/12 successful spot-kicks for the season.
Speaking after the win, Solskjaer said: “It was not a perfect night. We got three yellow cards and three suspensions. 2-0 is very good result.
“We know how difficult it is to come to Spain. We’ve got to play well to get a result.
“They [Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes] have been exceptional, so important for us.

“It was a very good run by Rashford, takes the ball fantastically. Bruno is so confident on penalties even though the keeper almost saved it.
“Same as always [attitude for next week]. We want to win every game. It’s still a young team, a learning team.
“We have to improve all the time.
“Football catches you so quickly if you rest. We can’t have any other approach.”

    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
In the second half this game we saw a play much like the first half, except it seemed as though Dinamo’s heads went down and were struggling to produce any attack.
Krznar tried to inject some magic with the substitution of Petkovic, despite him not being fit enough to start the game due to an ongoing injury. With his return they were hoping for the fire to reignite which they had against Tottenham, but this sadly did not happen. Krznar tried all his options with multiple substitutions but the visitors controlled the match until the final whistle.
Although Villarreal managed to secure the win with a questionably awarded penalty, their game was also not what they had hoped for. Players such as Chukwueze did not play to their potential and with multiple easy shots on goal missed.
However, the visitors achieved their aim and if they should keep a clean sheet at Madrigal next week then they’re back in the UEFA semi final. They continue to remain the competition’s only unbeaten side.

    VILLAREAL WIN AGAINST DINAMO ZAGREB

    AND THE WHISTLE IS BLOWN!!

    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
+3 Although anything can happen in three minutes, Villarreal have little to gain from an extra goal but a lot to lose from a goal from Dinamo. They continue to maintain possessing but no obvious pushes to attack.
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
90 3+ minutes added to the clock
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
88 With just two minutes left on the clock Villarreal push towards another goal looking to shut down this game in the final minutes.
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
85 Dinamo finally in a position of attack as Ivanušec takes the free-kick but this is unsuccessful and Dinamo are no closer to equalising.
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
80 Villarreal continue to maintain possession but feel no need to force anything with a 1-0 lead.
Freshness again is introduced into the Dinamo team with a double substitution of Franjić and Tolić. Trying to inject fresh blood to change the trajectory of this game.
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
With fifteen minutes left in this knockout European tie leaves room for any twists in play but the play has proven to be sluggish with neither team forcing any attack.

    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
75 A foul awarded against Moreno on Ristovski. A cheap foul high across the top of the knee, a well deserved of a yellow card is awarded.
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
70 Livaković once again stops the push of the Villarreal! Trigueros shoots from just outside the penalty area, it loops up off Théophile-Catherine and Livaković tips the ball over.
Livaković is the sole player stopping the Villarreal attack.
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
65 A big chance for a second goal for Villarreal is missed! Gerard Moreno passes an extravagant through for Alcacer to run on to and misses the target which would’ve been an easy goal.
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
63 The visitors continue to dominate and don’t seem to be far from a second goal.
The momentum that Dinamo had against Tottenham is gone and it looks as if Krznar is clutching at straws trying to get that magic back with the double substitution of Kastrati and Petković.
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
61 Petkovic is subbed in, a surprise considering he wasn’t fit enough to start the game due to an ongoing injury. Maybe this is the hero Dinamo needs!
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
56 Although Dinamo’s defence isn’t allowing the visitors to add to their lead, Rulli seems to be a key player on the home-side’s defence blocking any potential chances for the visitors to score.
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
52 With another attack from Villarreal, they open up Dinamo’s defence and Alcacer strikes for the goal. Théophile-Catherine blocks it preventing the push of the Yellow Submarine.
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
51 It looks as if what ever Krznar said in the changing rooms hasn’t worked. Instead of Dinamo looking to take control of possession, they’re struggling in defence.
Villarreal have seen that Dinamo aren’t looking to take control and are just holding the ball and maintaining possession.
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
47 The game is back to the familiar back and forth of both sides but with Petkovic and Kastrati warming up on the side lines it might not be long until we see a change in the game play.
    DINAMO ZAGREB 0 – 1 VILLARREAL
46 And Dinamo are back with a vengeance with an early possession in this half.
Within the first minute Atiemwen has an attempt on goal but this goal doesn’t even test Rulli who saves it easily.

Arsenal 1 Slavia Prague 1: Tomas Holes injury-time strike stuns Gunners and gives Czech men the edge in quarter-final

ARSENAL’s Europa League ambitions are hanging in the balance after conceding a disastrous stoppage-time equaliser.Mikel Arteta thought his team had grabbed a crucial late lifeline when substitute Nicolas Pepe forced an 86th-minute breakthrough.

Arsenal were frustrated and face a huge task in next week’s second legCredit: Getty
But Arsenal’s record signing undid all his good work when he failed to clear a last-gasp Slavia corner to allow defender Tomas Holes to head in at the back post.
It was an absolute sickener for Arteta, who had been hoping that the backlash from Saturday’s Liverpool humiliation would be “the big punch in the face” that his team required.
But it wasn’t until he sent on Pepe and skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as late subs that he got the response he had been looking for.
The £130 million duo could have had few complaints about being benched following their recent half-hearted efforts.
And Aubameyang didn’t help his cause when he missed an absolute sitter within seconds of replacing Alex Lacazette.
But with time running out, Aubameyang pounced on Granit Xhaka’s long boot up the field to set up Pepe for a cool as you like finish into the far corner.
That should have been enough to leave the Gunners with a crucial advantage going into next week’s quarter-final second leg.
But now they have it all to do if they are going to survive in the competition which represents their last realistic chance of qualifying for Europe again next season.
Having already taken care of Leicester and Rangers in the previous rounds, Slavia arrived in North London confident that they didn’t have too much to fear from the tenth best team in England.

They are currently 14 points clear at the top of the Czech League and haven’t lost domestically in a 37-game run stretching all the way back to March of last year.
It is all a far cry from their only previous trip to the Emirates, when they hammered 7-0 in a Champions League group game back in October 2007.
Yet it wasn’t all straightforward for the Czech Champions, who were without all four of their recognised central defenders.
Among those absenstees was the veteran Ondrej Kudela, serving a provisional ban while Uefa investigates claims that he racially abused Rangers’ Glen Kamara last month.
Slavia have vehemently denied that accusation but didn’t exactly help themselves when their players failed to join Arsenal in taking a knee before kick-off.
At least they were able to welcome back goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar, playing his first game since his skull was fractured by Kemar Roofe’s head-high challenge during that stormy Ibrox encounter.
Kolar was wearing both a face mask and helmet to protect his injury yet showed no fear when he dashed out to prevent Lacazette from reaching Bukayo Saka’s early through ball.

Mikel Arteta cut a frustrated figure for most of the nightCredit: The Sun
In fact it was Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno who had more to worry about during the opening exchanges when the dangerous Lukas Provod belted a vicious first time effort just over from the edge of the area.
Arsenal’s first attempt on goal didn’t arrive until the 25th minute, a tame header from Gabriel which was easily dealt with by Kolar.
And that inability to trouble their opponents’ makeshift defence was clearly getting to Arteta as he tried to elicit a response from his team.
They should have been ahead on the half hour when Rob Holding stepped out of defence to play Saka in on goal with a delicious pass.
But with only the keeper to beat and Slavia looking in vain for a linesman’s flag, the teenaged England star rolled his shot wide of the far post.
Holding tried to take matters into his own hands with a looping header from Cedric’s cross which forced a first save of the night from Kolar, arching backwards to tip the ball to safety from under his crossbar.
And Willian almost broke the deadlock with a 47th minute free-kick which struck the outside of the post after Saka had been dragged down on the edge of the area.
With Kieran Tierney ruled out by a knee injury for at least the next four weeks, Saka appeared to be the obvious candidate to deputise at left-back.

But Arteta clearly believes the youngster offers far too much going forward even if his final ball still occasionally lets him down.
Arsenal thought they had finally found a breakthrough when Lacazette muscled Oscar Dorley off the ball on the halfway line to give himself a clear run on goal.
But with an absolute eternity to weigh up his options, the striker fired against the bar with Emile Smith Rowe unable to connect with the rebound.
It was typical of Arsenal’s lack of killer instinct and now that carelessness could come back to haunt them next week.

Granada 0 Man Utd 2: Rashford strike and late Fernandes penalty put Red Devils in command of Europa League quarter-final

MIGHTY Marcus Rashford pushed through the pain barrier to open the door to another semi-final for Manchester United.Patched up to play, he looked like he needed to go off as he held his leg and grimaced through the first 20 minutes.

The Granada players could tell he was struggling, which is why they kept leaving a foot in and nipping away at the England international.
But Rashford is made of tough stuff and if they thought he was going lame they were wrong.
In the 31st minute he produced the sort of gallop that so impressed Sir Alex Ferguson at Aintree as he completed a hat-trick of wins.
Victor Lindelof spotted him bursting out the gates between full-back and centre-back and delivered a superb pass from deep inside his own half.
Tom Brady, who lead the Glazers’ Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Super Bowl victory, could not have picked out a team-mate better.
Rashford looked over his shoulder as he continued his run then with a superb first touch brought the ball under his spell.
With the second he knocked it forward and then the third saw him slide the ball past the advancing goalkeeper to win this Europa League quarter-final first leg.
Bruno Fernandes gave the scoreline a more justified look to reflect United’s dominance when he a converted a 90th minute penalty he had won after being knocked over in the box by Yan Brice’s flailing arm.

His kick sneaked under goalkeeper Rui Silva’s dive and with it he reached 24 for the season.
Rashford now has 20 and so became the first United player since Wayne Rooney a decade ago to score 20-plus goals in back to back seasons after hitting 22 last season.
To think he is doing it while carrying a shoulder problem that will need surgery after the Euros this summer.
Last season a back injury kept him out of action for 141 days.
An ankle problem meant he had to pulled out the most recent England squad.
And then he limped out of United’s 2-1 win over Brighton in the 72nd minute on Sunday having grabbed the equaliser ten minutes earlier.
Solskjaer doubted he could play 90 minutes last night but started him and he delivered so he could come off after 66.
The 23-year-old is crucial to United a scorer of great goals as we saw in Europe this season with his winner in the Champions League Group against PSG.
He also got a hat-trick against RB Leipzig in a 5-0 home win that should have propelled them to qualify for the next stage of that competition.

He has eight now across the two competitions.
That will mean little to Rashford, however, unless United go on to lift this trophy.
He has winners medals from the 2016 FA Cup and 2017 EFL Cup and when they lifted the Europa League against Ajax in Stockholm.
That was United’s last trophy though and the Ole Solskjaer era needs one.
Ajax once more or AS Roma will wait for them in the last four if, as they should, they get the job done in the second-leg next week.
It will be their fifth semi-final over two seasons and they have lost the other four, twice to City in the EFL, to Chelsea in the FA Cup and Sevilla in this competition.
Solskjaer said trophies are for egos and the real measure of this team’s progression will be if they finish second in the league after a third place last season.
But I can’t remember the last time United fans were dancing in the streets at finishing second.
They were certainly dancing in Stockholm when they won this under Jose Mourinho and would love a trip to Gdansk for the final of this.

How many could witness that final of course is debatable due to Covid.
Mind you on the evidence of the Europa League last season when United played a mine tournament behind closed doors in Cologne, their supporters will travel just to be in the same City as their heroes.
And Rashford is a hero on the pitch and off it for his amazing work in fighting child poverty.
Solskjaer warned that Granada’s fight and spirt could be a problem last night.
Assembled at eight millions euros, that is less than David De Gea earns in a fortnight.
Recalled to the side last night he didn’t have to do a lot to pocket his wages for the week.
Next up it is Spurs away on Sunday and their old boss Mourinho, the last United manager to lift a trophy.
Rashford will pick himself up this morning, dust himself off and the physios will go to work to get him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
They need him, as last night in Andalusia once again proved.
