Man Utd player ratings: Bruno Fernandes, Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba shine in semi sweep but Fred falls flat vs Roma

MANCHESTER UNITED placed one foot in the Europa League final with a 6-2 win in the first leg of their semi-final clash with Roma.Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani each scored twice, with Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood also netting in the Old Trafford thriller.
Bruno Fernandes had an excellent game as Man Utd beat Roma 6-2Credit: AP
But who was the best man on the pitch? And did anyone have a game to forget?
Here, SunSport’s Anthony Chapman delivers his Man Utd player ratings…
    DAVID DE GEA – 6/10
Wasn’t at fault for either of Roma’s goals as he had a generally quiet evening.
One error saw him kick the ball straight at Dzeko, but he redeemed himself later by saving a good header from the ex-Man City striker.
    AARON WAN-BISSAKA – 7
Showed good intent going forward as he linked up well with Rashford.
But like a lot of his team-mates, seemed to underestimate Roma’s counter-attacking threat and got caught out several times.

    VICTOR LINDELOF – 6
Kept the ball ticking over as United built up from the back when on the front foot.
But positional play was suspect and his marking left little to be desired too.
    HARRY MAGUIRE – 6
Some decent long-range hits helped United beat Roma’s attacking press and quickly get through the lines.
Yet struggled to stop Edin Dzeko from putting the Italians ahead with a desperate lunge.
    LUKE SHAW – 7
A fairly quiet game in the first half as the hosts mostly attacked down the right flank.
But second 45 saw Shaw get more of the ball and he overlapped well as Pogba drifted inside.
Edinson Cavani had one of his best games for United with two goalsCredit: Getty
    SCOTT McTOMINAY – 6
United’s midfield engine was not his usual imposing self as he was given a role keeping close to Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
But failed to stop the Armenian from playing a defence-splitting pass to create Roma’s second.
    FRED – 5
A sub-standard game from the Brazilian, with plenty of sideways and backwards passes.
Was defensively poor too and did not track Lorenzo Pellegrini, who ran in behind midfielder to assist Roma’s second.
    MARCUS RASHFORD – 7
Struggled to find space against the imposing Brazilian left centre-back Ibanez.
But work rate was unquestionable as he tried his hardest to pull United back into the game.
Mason Greenwood came off the bench to put the finishing touch on a fine nightCredit: Getty
    BRUNO FERNANDES – 9
Scored the opener with less than nine minutes on the clock with a classy chipped finish.
Fernandes’ persistence was rewarded early in second half with assist for Cavani’s equaliser.
And he then made it 4-2 with a well-taken penalty later on before setting up Pogba for the fifth
    PAUL POGBA – 8
The architect of United’s opener went from hero to zero within minutes as his handball gave Roma a penalty equaliser.
But picked himself up to cut inside and link up well with Fernandes throughout the game.
The pair linked up well as Pogba headed in the playmaker’s cross for 5-2.
    EDINSON CAVANI – 8
Gorgeous deft touch perfectly found Fernandes for United’s opening strike.
His lovely finish minutes into second half then saw Red Devils restore parity.
And he was at it again to fire United back in front after pouncing on a mistake from the Roma goalie.
Cavani then won a penalty which was converted by Fernandes for 4-2 before brilliant pass found Greenwood for sixth.

SUBS: Mason Greenwood (for Rashford, 76) – 7

Europa League final tickets: Are Man Utd and Arsenal fans allowed to attend and where is match being held?

THIS season’s Europa League has reached the semi-final stage – and we could be set for an all-Premier League final.Manchester United and Arsenal are still in the competition, taking on Roma and Villarreal over two legs for a place in the showdown.
Roma fans gave their team a brilliant send-off ahead of their Europa League semi-final against Man UtdCredit: EPA
But with Covid restrictions still in force across much of Europe, will fans be able to attend the final if either make it?
When is the Europa League final?

This season’s final will be held on Wednesday, May 26.
The kick-off time is yet to be announced, but is expected to be 8pm BST.

Where is the match being held?
The Gdansk Stadium in Poland will host the showpiece.
It has an official capacity of 41,000 and is home to Polish side Lechia Gdansk.
Last year’s final was due to be held at the venue, but was moved due to the pandemic.

Will fans be able to attend?
UEFA and Polish authorities are working together in the hope of welcoming up to 10,000 fans to the stadium on May 26.
That would represent a quarter of capacity in the Gdansk Arena.
Currently, the earliest possible date for foreign travel to resume for people in the UK is after May 17.
But even if the current steps on the roadmap are met, the next stumbling block could be the government’s ‘traffic light’ system for entering certain countries.
Countries will be designated a colour of either red, amber or green, which will determine quarantine requirements on return to the UK.
The stadium in Gdansk was used during Euro 2012Credit: Sportsfile – Subscription
According to Sky Sports, each team could be allocated 1,900 tickets for the match.
There are also reports that clubs could organise bubble packages for their fanbase, which would include flights, tickets and then buses to and from the airport.
Uefa appear keen to make sure that tickets will be available and fans return to the terraces for their biggest two matches of the season.

A statement on Uefa’s website reads: “The UEFA Europa League™ Final 2021 will take place in Gdańsk, Poland in the Gdańsk Stadium on Wednesday, 26 May 2021.
“Information about the ticket sales for this match (availability of tickets, application deadline, ticket prices, etc.) should be communicated early May 2021.
“More details will follow in due course.” More

Arsenal start plans for Europa League final early with fans able to fly to Gdansk in coronavirus secure bubble

ARSENAL are preparing early for the Europa League final – with hopes of a coronavirus-secure bubble to fly 1,900 fans to Gdansk. The Gunners must first overcome Villarreal in the two-legged semis, while Manchester United take on Roma.
The Europa League final is due to be played at the Gdansk Stadium, with Arsenal and Man Utd hoping to make it an all-English affairCredit: EPA
The home of Polish top-flight side Lechia Gdansk will host the showpiece
UEFA and Polish authorities hope to host around 10,000 supporters at the final on May 26.
And it is thought Arsenal are proposing a single travel option for their potential date in Poland – a flight package run by the club.
That tightly-controlled measure, to combat the risk of Covid-19, would reportedly be followed by a coach from the airport to the ground.
And there would be no travelling around the large Baltic coast city of Gdansk itself.
The stadium, home to Lechia Gdansk, has a capacity of 41,000.
It was due to be the venue for last year’s final until the coronavirus pandemic forced changes.

Poland has not held a football match in front of fans since March 2020.
But the British government are on course to ease limits on overseas travel from May 17.
And the Gunners and United are optimistic their supporters will be able to attend the Gdansk showpiece – should either or both clubs reach the final.

Luke Shaw’s blistering Man Utd form is because ‘confidence is back’ and warns Roma’s Smalling he won’t go easy on him

LUKE SHAW has warned former Manchester United team-mate Chris Smalling he won’t go easy on him during the Red Devils’ Europa League semi-final against Roma. The left-back also said his outstanding United form is down to the return of his confidence.

United host the Serie A side in the first-leg of the Europa League semi-final on Thursday night.
Shaw is playing the best football of his career and says he is loving being out on the pitch again.
The 25-year-old said: “My form has been much improved, I’m enjoying my football. I’ve got my confidence back and I’m just loving playing football again.
“Personally it’s nice for me to have a good season but that doesn’t really matter if we don’t have a successful season and that is to win a trophy.
“If we don’t win a trophy and I’ve still had a good season I’ll be disappointed because the most important thing – and it’s why we play for a big club like Manchester United – is to win trophies.
“Yeah I’ve been good but I want to help the team push for this trophy and cap off a great season and one I’ll be happy with if we do win the trophy.”
Shaw’s former team-mate Smalling spent 10 years on the Old Trafford books since he signed from Fulham in 2010 and played 323 games and scored 18 goals for the Reds.
He joined Roma on loan in August 2019 before making the switch permanent last October.

Former Red Devil Henrikh Mkhitaryan also plays for the Italian side but Shaw has no time for sentiment ahead of the European showdown.
He added: “Mkhi and Chris, I was here with both of them, and I really missed them when they left, they were really good guys and brilliant players.
“It’ll be really nice to see them, they’ve both been doing really well. They’ve both been a bit unfortunate with injuries but they’re back fit now and they will obviously make their team much stronger than before.
“I’m looking forward to seeing them tonight but the game is the most important, so we won’t be friends during it but maybe after we’ll have a chat.”
But asked if he will be taking it easy against his old mates, Shaw was emphatic.
He added: “No, there’s none of that. We’re all professionals and it’s our job, we’re doing it for ourselves but also the fans so it’s very important to keep being professional.
“It’ll be very nice to see them but we’ll leaving the talking until after. We need to win the game and doing everything to win it.”

Man Utd MUST win Europa League to convince players Solskjaer is closing gap on City after semi-final hoodoo

MANCHESTER CITY’S relentless pursuit of honours means United dare not fail in the Europa League. It’s squeaky bum time for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his team.
Man Utd MUST shake off their semi-final hoodoo and win the Europa LeagueCredit: Getty
It’s the stage of the competition that Solskjaer’s team limped out of last year.
On Wednesday, Manchester City produced a European performance in the Champions League that Solskjaer will have related to from his days as a United player under Sir Alex Ferguson.
United will tell you they are concentrating on themselves, and the players regularly tweet about ‘trusting the process’.
But since Ferguson left in 2013, City have won the Premier League three times and are about to win it for a fourth. They’ve also won the League Cup six times and the FA Cup.
The Champions League is the holy grail but they’ll get there eventually – they have the best manager and sign some of the best players, exactly where United used to be.
In the same period, United have won the League Cup, FA Cup and the Europa League.
These are just some of the reasons why United must win the Europa League this season.
City are the juggernaut that keeps on winning, and Solskjaer must claim the trophy to convince the players and fans that United really are making steps in the right direction.

There’s been five semi-final disappointments since Solskjaer took charge.
He won’t lose his job regardless of what happens in the Europa League because qualification for the Champions League next campaign has pretty much already been secured via the Premier League.
Roma are not an easy opponent to overcome, but it’s one the United faithful are expecting to beat comfortably, and the stats favour Solskjaer’s men too.
Bruno Fernandes has been directly involved in more goals in the Europa League than any other player.
And United have not lost at home in a European semi-final since April 1997 (1-0 v Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League), winning four and drawing three of their last seven games.
After their win over Granada in the last round Solskjaer said he ‘had not seen too much of Roma’.
That saw Roma fans put banners up near their training ground with Solskjaer’s face on them with the quote: “I don’t know them and I haven’t seen them play.”
This will be the seventh meeting between United and Roma in European competition. The Red Devils have only lost one of the previous six (W4 D1) – all of which have been in the Champions League.
Roma striker Edin Dzeko is one to keep an eye on. He’s scored five goals in four previous games against United at Old Trafford, including a double in each of his last two there while playing for City.
So, it’s all set-up for a big night at Old Trafford and one Solskjaer dare not lose.

Arsenal legend Robert Pires says Unai Emery gives Villarreal the edge over Gunners in Europa League semi-final

ROBERT PIRES believes Unai Emery gives Villarreal the edge over Arsenal in the Europa League semi-finals.That’s despite the Gunners sacking him in 2019 in favour of current boss Mikel Arteta.

Pires feels Emery’s three Europa League crowns with Sevilla from 2013-2016 gives him vital pedigree.
Villarreal are in the semis for the fourth time but have yet to reach a final.
But 2003-04 Invincible Gunner Pires thinks Emery’s superb European record gives him an advantage over his Emirates successor Arteta.
Villarreal are seventh in LaLiga, whereas Arsenal are tenth in the Premier League, 12 points below fourth-placed Chelsea.
And French 1998 World Cup winner Pires told AS: “I have been lucky enough to play for two great teams, such as Arsenal and Villarreal.
“Seeing them now face each other in a semi-final is something special.
“I see the situation at Arsenal with sadness.

“I speak with Arteta and I see that it has not been an easy year.
“What can save them is to win this Europa League and thus play the Champions League next year.
“It is difficult to give a favorite for the semi-final. I would say it is 50-50. It is difficult to get it right.

“I think Villarreal has an advantage because they have Emery, a coach who has done very well in that competition.
“What I like the most is that it is a team that has a clear idea, that they like to play good football.
“Everyone knows that if you go to see Villarreal, you are going to see a good team, a team with very good players and that it will surely complicate things for Arsenal.”
