Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claims it’s Man Utd’s ‘destiny’ to win Europa League final as No26 is a ‘special omen’ for club

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER believes it is Manchester United’s destiny to win tonight’s Europa League final — because of the “special” number 26.The clash with Villarreal in Poland falls on the same date as legendary United manager Sir Matt Busby’s birthday.

May 26 was also the date of United’s 1999 Champions League triumph over Bayern Munich, which saw Solskjaer score to clinch the Treble.
And with 26 also a key date for his family, the United boss believes the omens are good, despite being without injured captain Harry Maguire.
He said: “My wife’s birthday is on the 26th and we got married on the 26th, so I have to believe in destiny.
“It’s a special number for us, for my family as well.
“I’m not very superstitious but I’ve got to take this as a good omen.
“The players need to do the job and maybe we can honour Sir Matt’s birthday with another win.
“You’re not superstitious when it is something negative. When it’s something positive you think it will work in your favour. I think it will be a good omen for us.
“These are big nights for us. It might be the stepping stone for something better to come, a bright future.

Unfortunately for United, it’s unlikely that captain Harry Maguire will be fit to start the final at centre-back.
The England defender is still recovering from his ankle injury and will want to make sure he is in tip-top shape for the Three Lions at this summer’s Euros.
David de Gea should start in goal ahead of Dean Henderson, while Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof take command at the back.
Edinson Cavani should start up top for the Red Devils.
Villarreal are waiting to hear if Juan Foyth will be fit for the final, while goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo could start ahead of the shaky Geronimo Rulli.
Etienne Capoue could make the Spanish side’s XI in midfield in place of Francis Coquelin, with Dani Parejo also expected to play in the middle of the park.

What is the Europa League trophy made from, who designed it and do the clubs get to keep it?

EVERY tournament-winning football team deserves a majestic and grand trophy to celebrate with once all is said and done. That’s exactly what Manchester United will be trying to do when they face Villarreal in the Europa League final in Gdansk on Wednesday evening.

The Europa League trophy is the heaviest in UEFA’s possessionCredit: Getty
One of the two sides will get the opportunity to lift one of the sleekest-looking trophies in world football with victory on what will be a momentous occasion.
What is the Europa League trophy made from?
The Europa League trophy itself is made from silver and it sits on a yellow marble plinth.
The Europa League trophy is a big one. It’s also the heaviest of any of the UEFA silverware uses in football today.
It tips the scales at a whopping 15kg.
The piece of silverware is also 65cm tall, 33cm at its widest point and 23cm deep.

Who designed the Europa League trophy?
The Europa League trophy was designed at the Bertoni workshop in Milan, Italy.
Unlike most traditional-looking trophies, the Europa League’s body does not include handles.
UEFA say that just above the marble plinth sits detailing which purports to show ‘a group of players seem to be jostling for the ball, when, in fact, they are supporting the octagonal ‘cup’ which is emblazoned with the UEFA emblem’.
Do clubs get to keep the Europa League trophy?
The original trophy remains with UEFA all the time, but teams receive full-sized replicas for winning the competition.
UEFA also make sure to give special recognition to teams who win the trophy three times consecutively or five times overall.
Sevilla achieved that feat last year when they overcame Inter Milan.

How Man Utd could line up in Europa League final against Villarreal as Harry Maguire faces race against time to be fit

MANCHESTER UNITED take on Villarreal for a chance to win their second Europa League title in five seasons on Wednesday night. But they’ll likely have to do it without captain and star defender Harry Maguire.
How Man Utd could line up against Villarreal with Maguire out
The England ace, 28, is struggling in his race to be passed fit for the final in Gdansk, Poland after picking up an ankle injury earlier this month.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has named Maguire in his 26-man travelling group – but admitted he’s unlikely to turn to his skipper on the pitch.
The Man Utd boss claimed: “We still hope for Harry, we’re going to give him as much time as possible but the hope is getting slimmer.
“It’s a blow, definitely. When your captain, your ever-present captain, your leader is out…”
United will definitely be without Anthony Martial, though.
The French forward has returned to training following a two-month injury lay-off, but has not been deemed fit enough for the squad.
Youngsters Amad Diallo, Anthony Elanga – who scored in the 2-1 win at Wolves – and Shola Shoretire have been named in the travelling group.
David De Gea is likely to beat Dean Henderson to the starting spot between the sticks.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw are certainties to start in the full-back slots, barring any late injuries.
Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof are set to start together at centre-back, with Axel Tuanzebe also in contention should Maguire not recover.
In midfield, Fred is likely to be fit enough to start alongside Scott McTominay in the deeper midfield roles following a minor knock.
Bruno Fernandes will undoubtedly start in the No10 position behind Edinson Cavani up front.
Marcus Rashford is expected to start on the right wing with Paul Pogba taking on the role on the left flank yet again.
However, Mason Greenwood will be pushing for a spot in the XI and could start in place of Fred, with Pogba shifting into midfield and Rashford switching to the left.

Luke Shaw has missed Man Utd’s last FIVE finals… now he’s determined to make it sixth time lucky vs Villarreal

TO MISS one final is unlucky. Two is heartbreaking. Three, you might start wondering if you are in the right trade. But four – no make that FIVE if you want to chuck in a Super Cup – well.
Luke Shaw is determined to make his mark against Villarreal on Wednesday nightCredit: Getty

Well that is Luke Shaw’s back catalogue at Manchester United as he finally looks forward to breaking his duck in the Europa League final against Villarreal in Gdansk on Wednesday.
He said: “There was disappointment with all of them, really.
“In big games at big times are big opportunities to show yourself and I feel like I missed out on them.”
It is a testament to Shaw’s courage, determination and belief that he has picked himself up from those disappointments.
A broken leg that brought his career to a halt for a year ruled him out of the 2016 FA Cup final, an injured foot kept him out the squad for the Europa League final and Super Cup against Real Madrid both in 2017.
For the other two, the 2017 League Cup and 2018 FA Cup, Jose Mourinho simply left him out the whole squad.
He watched the 2017 Europa League final versus Ajax with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, both on crutches, in Stockholm. The last time United lifted silverware.
And Shaw added: “Personally, I was really happy for the squad, for the team, for the fans that season, it was a good season.

“Being there on crutches, it’s always different. I’m happy for the team to win it but it’s extremely different when you don’t play in it, it’s not the same feeling.
“Hopefully, this time I can be involved and try and help the team and personally for myself, to be involved in the final and win it.”
There is no question about him being involved for United in Poland and with England next month in the Euros.
From looking like his United career was over in 2018, he has enjoyed his best campaign with the Red Devils.
So good that his fellow professionals at United voted him their player of the season.
Shaw credits manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for his revival and his own inner determination.
Off the field he has the support of his parents who travel everywhere to watch him and his partner Anouska Santos, with whom he has an 18-month old son Reign London.
Shaw said: “I’ve always had lots of support around me. What I’ve been through, the stuff I’ve gone through, if I didn’t have the support I did, I would have struggled even more.

“I think my family, my mum and dad, especially, and Anouska have supported me so well with what I’ve been through.
“They’ve obviously seen my struggles and known about them, they’ve been so supportive.
“It’s funny, because even sometimes when I come home, I think she’ll tell me if she doesn’t think I was my normal self in a game.
“She knows me so well now, she knows what needs to be said at different times.
“I had a conversation with my girlfriend before the start of the season on what my aims were going to be and stuff like that and she’s been really good with me, she’s pushed me.
“She’s kept me on a straight path, always reminding me of what I said at the start of the season and what I wanted to achieve.
“Obviously, the benefits of that are showing now. Her and the little one have helped me on the outside of football and it’s nice to know
“You grow up much more when you’ve had a kid. You have to, it’s part of life.”
Hopefully winning the Europa League will start a new success for UnitedLuke Shaw
Shaw has grown into one of the world’s best full-backs right now and at 25 is entering the best years of his career as part of a United team he believes are going places.
It has a balance of youth and experience and with some summer additions he is convinced they can be challenging for the title next season after coming second this campaign.
Shaw said: “The squad we’ve got, it’s so talented. We’ve got a brilliant mix of experienced ones and younger ones. But even the younger ones have played so many times now they’ve got that experience.
“The manager was speaking the other day about how he would like one or two more signings.
“I think we would all welcome that with open arms, anything that would make our squad better, increase our chances of getting to that next level, will be good for the team.
“We’re going in the right direction. You can see the improvement. But if I’m honest, we’ve still got a lot to learn.
Shaw watched the Europa League success over Ajax in 2017 with crutchesCredit: Getty – Contributor

“Especially this season, we look at the points we lost and where we went wrong and we all know how that happened and why that happened.
“Hopefully winning the Europa League will start a new success for United.”
And this time Shaw will be very much involved.

Harry Maguire issues rallying cry as Man Utd confirm injured defender WILL travel for Europa League final

HARRY MAGUIRE has urged his Manchester United team-mates to ‘improve again’ after an impressive Premier League campaign. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also confirmed the injured defender will still travel with the team to their Europa League final against Villareal in Gdansk on Wednesday.
Harry Maguire has issued a rallying cry to his Man Utd team-matesCredit: Reuters
Maguire is almost certain to miss the Europa showdown having injured his ankle ligaments against Aston Villa earlier this month.
But the Red Devils captain will still join his team-mates so he can provide support from the sidelines.
And despite his absence from the upcoming season finale and United’s last four Premier League games, Maguire is still trying to keep standards high.
After United won 2-1 at Wolves on Sunday to comfortably finished second – five points above Liverpool in third – Maguire took to Instagram to urge his team-mates to get better next season.
The 28-year-old uploaded a picture of himself in a United shirt and wrote: “Great way to finish the @premierleague campaign.
“Well done lads. Another step forward this year but we don’t settle for this, next year we must improve again.
    “Looking forward to Wednesday #MUFC.”
And before the Wolves game, Solskjaer confirmed his captain will be joining the squad in Poland this week.

The Norwegian said: “Still walking very gingerly. He’s travelling of course.
“I’ll give him until Wednesday afternoon to decide on that one but I don’t hold my hopes too high.”
Maguire recently gave fans hope he could play when he ditched his crutches and attended the premiere of Sir Alex Ferguson’s film ‘Never Give In’ on Thursday evening.
But Solskjaer said: “He’s walking but it’s a long way from walking to running so, to be honest, I don’t think we’ll see him in Gdansk, no.
“But, as I’ve said so many times, I’m going to give him until Tuesday night, the last training session, and see if he can try to be out there.
“He’s a very important person in the dressing room and a leader. Before the fans came in, I think you all heard him from the stands.
“He does still want the team to do well, of course, he’s organising even from the stands, which has been easy because it’s been so quiet.
“So, he’ll come, he’ll be in the dressing room, he’ll make sure everyone’s ready for the final.”
