And they were held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg following a dogged display from the visiting Italians at the Nou Camp last week.
Ferran Torres netted an equaliser from the penalty spot after a goal from Piotr Zielinski, but the Man City star will feel he could have won it for Barca after missing two sitters.
But the good news for Xavi’s side is that away goals no longer count double, so the teams head to Italy on level terms.

Borussia Dortmund ‘hold crisis talks with Marco Rose immediately after humiliating 4-2 home defeat to Rangers’

BORUSSIA DORTMUND boss Marco Rose reportedly had some explaining to do to the club’s top brass after his side’s crushing Europa League loss to Rangers.Dortmund were on the receiving end of a 4-2 drubbing at the hands of the Scottish titans in the first leg of the Europa League play-offs.

But Dortmund’s chiefs have come out to deny the claims they called Rose in for emergency talksCredit: Getty
Not even a goal from Liverpool and Manchester City transfer target Jude Bellingham was enough to stop Rangers from running riot at Signal Iduna Park – setting up a tantalising second-round tie at the Ibrox that the youngster’s relishing.
And reports claim Dortmund’s hierarchy – consisting of chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke, outgoing sporting director Michael Zorc and his successor next season Sebastian Kehl – were far from amused by the shambolic performance they witnessed on the night.
The trio were said to be so enraged that they summoned Dortmund’s head coach Rose in for a meeting straight after the game to try and make sense of what just happened, according to Sky Germany.
The amount of goals Dortmund are currently conceding is also worrying the trio.
The club’s heavy loss to Rangers was preceded by a 5-2 defeat by Bayern Leverkusen just 11 days prior.
But despite his team’s leaky defence, Sky’s German outlet also stated that Rose’s job is safe – for now.

However, Dortmund have come out to refute the claims that Rose was hauled in for a meeting, Sky also went on to report.
Rose will be present at the club’s press conference before they take on his former side Borussia Monchengladbach – who he left to manage Dortmund last summer – this weekend.
Despite Watzke and Co denying there’s trouble in paradise, the pressure will surely be on Rose to prevent a repeat defensive horror-show when Dortmund face Monchengladbach.
Dortmund are in second place in the Bundesliga at present with 65 points – five clear of closest rivals Bayern Leverkusen.
But if Rose can’t end Dortmund’s poor run of form and they end up without Champions League qualification this season, Sky suggest that the club may initiate a search for his replacement. More

Rangers ace Ryan Kent played like Franck Ribery and Bundesliga and EPL clubs will be chasing him says ex-Bayern star

RANGERS ace Ryan Kent will have Bundesliga and Premier League clubs chasing him following his stunning display against Borussia Dortmund, reckons Owen Hargreaves. The winger terrorised the Germans’ defence as Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men ran out shock 4-2 winners in their Europa League first leg match in the Westfalenstadion.

Two-times Champions League winner Hargreaves compared Kent to Bayern Munich and France legend Franck Ribery for his tricky wing play.
And the former Manchester United midfielder felt it was the sort of performance that would have some of Europe’s top clubs queuing up looking to snap up the Gers forward.
Hargreaves told BT Sport: “I thought Kent was absolutely brilliant.
“In a way it almost looked like he was Franck Ribery tearing through Borussia Dortmund the way he was dribbling in the way that he used to do that for Bayern Munich with his control and quality.
“It was exceptional play to set up John Lundstram for Rangers’ third goal.

That’s all from Signal Iduna Park
Rangers go into the second leg of this fixture with a two goal lead after stunning Borussia Dortmund in a 4-2 thriller.
This evening’s result will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the Light Blues’ greatest European outings.
The next leg will take place on Thursday February 24 at Ibrox.
Dortmund will be hoping that Erling Haaland is fit to return by then.
Thank you for reading, and goodnight!
    Giovanni van Bronckhorst reacts
“It is a very good result for us against a quality team, a big team in Europe so you know we wanted to take a result back to us to Glasgow to get a good game next week.
“I think we achieved that with a two goal difference we take back and I’m really proud of the performance the players have shown today.
“We also know that we are only half way and there’s still one game to be played but to come here and score four away goals in Europe, I think it’s a very good achievement so I’m more than happy with the result and especially the performance.”

Borussia Dortmund have conceded four goals at home in a UEFA competition for the first time since 2016.

    James Tavernier reacts
“I’m really happy with the result. We know it’s only half way there so we can take the positives out of tonight.”
“We were obviously a bit disappointed to concede the two goals because we put ourselves in a really good position but overall I thought we controlled the best we can, limiting them with chances and I thought we were really effective on the break and we got the goals so I’m really happy.”
“I thought all the boys were performing really well, and the boys that came on.”
“We’ve been working hard on them [set pieces].”

Full Time – Borussia Dortmund 2-4 Rangers
Borussia Dortmund did have positive spells throughout the game, particularly in the opening stages.
However, they were completely dominated by their opposition after the first goal.
BVB lacked efficiency in front of the target and certainly missed Haaland, but the young star could return for the reverse fixture at Ibrox next week.

Why isn’t Erling Haaland playing for Dortmund?
Erling Haaland misses Borussia Dortmund’s game against Rangers with a muscle injury.
Dortmund boss Marco Rose confirmed in his pre-match press conference that the Norwegian would play no part.
He commented: “He’s not an option.
“Not much has changed, Gio Reyna will probably be back, Emre is still suspended from the last UCL game.”
Ahead of the match, Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst said he was prepared for every eventuality.
He commented: “Haaland is of course one of the top strikers in the world.
“We have prepared for the game with or without him. Everyone recognises his talent, but we have to be prepared for their whole team.
“We are playing against one of the top sides in Europe, you know at this stage in Europe you play against very good opposition.
“We can’t wait for the challenge and will go out and try to get to the next round.”

And that means they have to play an extra round against Dortmund, who came third in their Champions League group behind Ajax and Sporting.
In a humbling experience for the Gers boss, Van Bronckhorst’s team will face Giovanni Reyna – a player who is named after him!
Reyna is the son of Claudio, a former USA midfielder who spent two years at Ibrox, becoming the closest of pals with Van Bronckhorst during their time together.
In the aftermath of the draw, Van Bronckhorst said: “Gio [Reyna] sent a text straight to my eldest son.
“They’re almost the same age. It’s good to be drawn against him.
“It’s a special moment for both of us, knowing each other.
“I’ve known Gio his whole life and he is named after me, so they won’t come better than this.
“We visited him 18 months ago to watch one of his Dortmund games.
“And I’ve already been in contact with his dad Claudio. We’re good friends and hopefully he can come to the games.
“All in all, it’s a very special moment for both of us.
“But being the professionals we are, we want to be the best for our clubs. That’s normal.”

Why aren’t West Ham playing in the Europa League knockout stage?
West Ham are not playing in this week’s Europa League knockout stage because they won their group.
A change in competition rules means the group winners are fast-tracked to the Round of 16 and avoid the Round of 32.
Only the group runners-up now participate in the Round of 32, where they face one of the third placed teams from the Champions League group stage.
