They were pipped to the Champions League places by bitter rivals Tottenham back in May after losing two of their final three games.
Prior to the 2021/22 campaign, the Gunners had spent four successive campaigns in the Europa League.
They reached the semi-finals on two occasions – in 2018 and 2021 – losing to Atletico Madrid and Villarreal.
But the closest they came was in 2019 when they made it all the way to the final, before being thumped 4-1 by Chelsea.
They also lost in the UEFA Cup final in 2000 when Galatasaray beat them on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes.
Arsenal have made a superb start to their Premier League campaign, winning all three of their matches so far against Crystal Palace, Leicester and Bournemouth.
Mikel Arteta has significantly bolstered his squad in the summer transfer window, signing five new players.
They are Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Marquinhos.

Mikel Arteta and Erik ten Hag’s teams missed out on being in yesterday’s Champions League draw after failing to get into the top 4 last season.
But they will be hoping to make progress in this season’s Europa League which will feature big European names such as PSV, Lazio, Monaco, Roma and Olympiakos.
32 clubs will be divided into eight groups, with the top two in each group going through to the knock-out stages.
Arsenal and United are both in pot 1, meaning they will avoid facing the toughest sides.

But a draw simulation conducted by SunSport showed just how tricky the competition could still be, with Arteta’s side paired with Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.
The Eridivisie club are among the biggest in the competition and could give the Gunners issues if they were to face off over two games.
Elsewhere in the group, the simulation also drew Arsenal against Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia, currently being led by ex-Celtic boss Neil Lennon.
And they were also simulated to face FK Bodø/Glimt from Norway.

Manchester United could also find themselves facing some difficult European trips if the simulation is close to the truth.
The hypothetical draw sees them face Fenerbahce with the Turkish side known to be tricky European customers.
United would also play Austrian side Sturm Graz and Qarabag FK, who have previously played Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal in Europe.
The Europa League group stage kicks off on Thursday September 8 with Arsenal and United looking to go all the way.
Arsenal came close in 2019 before losing in the final to rivals Chelsea, while United lifted the trophy in 2017 under Jose Mourinho.
The pair have had contrasting starts to the season with impressive Arsenal top of the table with three wins from three.
The Red Devils had an appalling start before stunning Liverpool at Old Trafford and getting their first win of the season.

    Long distance for United…
Manchester United will have to travel far and wide for their Europa League group stage games this season.
The Red Devils will make a 4,200 mile-round trip to Cyprus to challenge Omonia and will travel 3,600 miles to Moldova and back to take on Sheriff in Group E.
These long journeys could really take a hit on the United players, as they also face a tough test against Real Sociedad in the groups.
All this among the Premier League games that they will be playing, makes it a much tougher draw than it looks on paper for United.
    West Ham’s new boy…
West Ham will be looking to be victorious in this year’s rendition of the UEFA Europa Conference League, and they have agreed a deal for a big player who could help them do so…
Lucas Paqueta has been the latest starlet to come out of Ligue 1 with Lyon, and has commanded a £51 million price tag.
He is a midfielder of immense talent, scoring 21 goals and provided 14 assists in 80 appearances for Lyon as well as being capped 33 times by Brazil, and netting seven times.

    Games to watch out for
Now that the draw is over for both European competitions, we can round up some of the most exciting games that have been drawn.
These are the ones we think you should be most excited for…
    Europa League:

    Arsenal vs PSV
    AS Roma vs Real Betis
    Manchester United vs Real Sociedad

    Europa Conference League:

    Fiorentina vs Istanbul Basaksehir
    West Ham vs Anderlecht
    OGC Nice vs Koln
    Hearts vs Fiorentina

    West Ham’s group…
This is how West Ham’s Europa Conference League group stage draw will look this season.
They landed a somewhat tricky group, including FC FCSB, Anderlecht and Silkeborg, although it was far from the worst possible outcome.
Many fans won’t recognise FC FCSB, as they changed their name from Steaua Bucuresti in 2017, but Chelsea fans may remember when they beat the Romanian outfit 1-0 in the 2013 Champions League.
Anderlecht could too be a tricky opponent, as they have produced some of the finest Belgian talents we have seen, such as Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans.
Overall, however, you would expect West Ham to win all their games in this group with relative ease, and move on to the knockout rounds of the competition.

Man Utd’s toughest Europa League group revealed ahead of draw with Ten Hag facing tricky trip to France

MANCHESTER UNITED could face a tricky Europa League group – including a tough trip to France for Erik ten Hag’s struggling stars. The Red Devils will be desperate to find their best form before long – and some European wins could bring much-needed confidence.

But the draw on Friday will reveal who United must get past – with some dangerous teams in the competition.
Manchester United – runners-up to Villarreal in 2021 – will be in Pot 1 as one of the heavyweights.
They will be joined by fellow Premier League side Arsenal, Lazio, Braga, Red Star Belgrade, Dynamo Kyiv and Olympiacos as well as Europa Conference League winners Roma, managed by their old boss Jose Mourinho.
The worst-case scenario for United would see them draw PSV – one of the sides to drop down from Champions League qualifying.

PSV are joined by Rennes as well as Monaco, Real Sociedad and Feyenoord in Pot 2.
Monaco finished third last season in Ligue 1 and were knocked out of Champions League qualifying by PSV Eindhoven.
They are one of the strongest sides in Pot 2 – even though they have lost superstar midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni in an £85million transfer to Champions League winners Real Madrid this summer.
This week’s play-offs have confirmed the remaining teams who will compete in the 32-club group stages.

United may be drawn in the same group as Sturm Graz, the minnows who finished second in the Austrian Bundesliga last season.
Graz is the country’s second-largest city and is the birthplace of bodybuilder-turn-actor-turn-politician Schwarzenegger.
But it is United who could benefit from his power and strength if they want to outmuscle their way to Europa League glory.
Belgian runners-up Union Saint-Gilloise are in Pot 4 due to their tiny Uefa coefficient.
The sister-club of Brighton are making their debut in a Uefa competition after being pipped by Club Brugge in the Jupiler Pro League play-offs.
However, the teams from Pot 3 and Pot 4 Ten Hag will be hoping to avoid include Real Betis and Union Berlin.
